Are you stuck? Going through a rough time? Struggle with self doubt? Need some inspiration – or just some smiles? Then you’ll love the “life lessons from the road” in this book!
Dr. Terrie Wurzbacher is a life-long walker. And she loves a challenge. In 2020 she entered the Walk across Tennessee, a 314-mile ultrawalking race to “the Rock.” The challenge – the race must be completed in 10 days. In addition, everything she would need – food, water, toiletries, sleeping mat, insect spray - had to be carried on her back.
The difficulty – at over 70 years old and less than 5 feet tall – was that she had a steady but SLOW pace. She could count on just a few hours of rest per day. She had a disappointing finish. But she came home with a new determination to complete the race.
She changed her routine, her diet and her training schedule. Most importantly she changed her mindset!
She entered the race again in 2021 and she did it! She made it to “the Rock” on time. How? She called upon the life lessons she learned in her experience as a 29 year veteran and Navy physician, as well as an avid runner and student of psychology.
Now YOU can be the beneficiary of those lessons – and the entertaining stories that go with them – all from the comfort of your reading chair. No miles required!
Each chapter, with its insights and inspiration stands on its own. You’ll read and learn as the miles are woven together in an entertaining narrative. You can apply them individually or together in the quest to reach your “Rock”, whatever it may be.
This made me so nostalgic for the road. VolState is such a special event and it was nice to read all of the lessons that the author learned from the event and in life. I miss sitting on guardrails and putting my feet up in the air outside of a Dollar General at 6am.
Dr. Terrie Wurzbacher really captures the feelings of being on the road. If you're curious about journey runs or LAVS, I highly recommend you get this on your TBR list.
Pitfalls of self publishing, good story but rambles on & on
This book was a book club choice. The book started out exciting out the author's incredible journey walking across Tennessee. The fact the author is a 73-year old retired Navy doctor is an entire story itself. However, the pitfalls of self publishing soon became evident. The story derails with a lot of awkward syntax and repetition. Starting sentences with a numeral is NOT done outside of social media! This just ruined the whole thing for me.
Please, if anyone is planning on self publishing, hire a copy editor to polish the story.
What is actually a great story is hidden under tangles of useless and repeated ramblings. The story about this incredible race ends about 1/3 of the way into the book. The rest of the book is a rehash of what the writer had been through with some "life lessons" thrown in.
You don't have to be an athlete to like this inspirational story of how to get through a race - this is a book of Wurzbacher's lifetime of wisdom, and she gives it to you no holds barred. I love how she organizes the chapters. I love her clear voice. It's a quick read, and I didn't want it to end.
