Would you like a life that is happier? Quieter? Richer? Kinder? More successful? Makes a greater impact? Has more joy?
Do you want a life that is somehow better?
In Always Strive to Be a Better You: How ordinary people can live extraordinary lives, best-selling author Pete Hall shares 13 proven ideas and strategies for living a life that is based on the idea of continuous improvement - in life, in relationships, in work, and in any aspect of our existence.
Proven by whom? Rather than share tips from larger-than-life celebrities and famous personalities, Pete extracts these 13 Key Learnings from seven ordinary people: Andre, Brooke, Chelsea, Derek, Jennifer, Matt, and Tammy - people who have carefully built and curated lives that are, by many means, extraordinary. They're our neighbors, they're regular people, and their lessons are relatable and replicable...for all of us. Are they perfect? Heavens, no. Do their lessons resonate with each of us? Most likely, yes.
The Key Learnings follow four big themes that build upon each other and also stand alone as opportunities to grow, to learn, and to excel:
Tenet 1: Know thyself. We begin our exploration by looking inward, examining the very spirit and essence of ourselves. In order to begin to identify what sort of future we want for ourselves and our fellow travelers, we must truly and deeply understand our strengths, our weaknesses, our core values, our fears, and our reality.
Key Learning #1: Clean your mirror Key Learning #2: Strengthen your core Key Learning #3: It's bigger than you Key Learning #4: Seek out your antelopes Tenet 2: Work for love. With some clarity about ourselves in hand, we'll shift our focus to our ideal future-our ideal life. Defining success in great detail allows us to identify our passions and calling, formulate a goal, create a game plan, and begin to live a life with greater intentionality and purpose.
Key Learning #5: Clarity precedes competence Key Learning #6: Behold the cardinal Key Learning #7: Stay out of the cornfield Tenet 3: Let your light shine. Once on the path, we know we'll encounter highs and lows. Using the power of positivity, we'll reframe challenges, embrace adversity, and earnestly seek out the silver linings in every cloud. We can tackle any challenge when we bring our own energy into the arena.
Key Learning #8: Let it be this time Key Learning #9: Embrace disequilibrium . . . and then reframe it Key Learning #10: Bring your own energy Tenet 4: Rule the day. Pursuing our clear goals with a nimble mind gets us started. And at any given point in the journey, the reality of the moment is that's where we are-wherever we are, doing whatever we're doing. Success over the long run dictates that we immerse ourselves in the moment-and give it our all-in each and every moment.
Key Learning #11: Be there Key Learning #12: Rise up Key Learning #13: Put your feet on the floor-it's the only way to soar The lessons for living a life that is (in ancient Greek philosopher Plato's words) happy, virtuous, and good aren't secrets. In Always Strive to Be a Better You: How ordinary people can live extraordinary lives, Pete simply distills them and shares them in a straightforward, entertaining, and accessible manner.
Today's the day. Start living the life you want.
*Bonus: The book contains reflective questions and activities to help you maximize your efforts, as well as exclusive online content for additional benefit.
There are thirteen key learnings compiled from interviews, discussions, travels, and interactions with people, broken down into four parts: knowing oneself, working for love, letting one’s light shine, and ruling the day. Throughout the book, readers have the time to pause, reflect, and understand who they are as a person and develop goals to improve themselves in a personal and professional capacity.
The book provides anecdotes from seven people whose journeys are deliberately unrelatable to the readers in order to demonstrate the different ways to become better individuals. This is extremely refreshing because it means readers can see how unique everyone is; if the book only included celebrities, readers would focus on the popularity and success aspects of their lives instead of an ordinary person’s idea of being a better person. For example, one anecdote features a woman whose persistence and joyous perspective on life stem from her love for Tigger’s catchphrase and this helped land her a successful professional life.
In addition, there are activities for readers to reflect on and act upon. These activities include thought-provoking questions, such as considering what the reader would like to offer the world, and practical activities to apply to their lives, such as reframing negative sentences into positive phrases. Such examples include refraining from using the term ‘Don’t’ and instead considering saying ‘Be careful with’ and ‘Remember to’. Ultimately, there are small changes readers can make to their lives that can make them a better person.
The book delves heavily into the seven subjects and is extremely long for a guide. Therefore, it might be difficult to refer back to certain parts of the book such as the discussion with the seven subjects on how to improve their routine, such as making bad habits uncomfortable. Nonetheless, this is a comprehensive guide to becoming a better person, but the content is lengthy. This is a great read and the book requires digging deep to become personally and professionally successful. This can be generating a different routine, justifying their quirky behaviour, fitting in, or merely being a better person than they are today.
