As a lifelong lover of books, I’ve always had a great appreciation for writers and their craft. Over the course of my 50+ years living in different places around the world, I’ve written a few things, but never took the time to sit and try to write down any of the books I’ve dreamed up. In 2021 that changed. A new opportunity to share stories, one episode at a time, prompted me to try my hand at it.

I never could have imagined the positive response my writing received and now I’m happy to expand those stories to a wider audience to build upon what I’ve already written. Nothing would make me happier than to know that you enjoy my stories. Please find me on social media @HunterCAuthor to send me your feedback.

About me: I grew up in the Midwest and went to a big state school known as much for their football team as anything else. I studied English Literature and History. It was there that I met my wife and we fell in love. We were married when I was in graduate school and during our first few years working after graduation, God showed us the opportunities to be involved in His work around the world.

Since 2000, we’ve lived outside of the United States, having many amazing experiences and meeting people from around the globe. My experiences traveling and my background in counseling are highly influential in my writing.

3.5! Trace and Perin’s story was a great read overall! The shift between the two was difficult though.

This book was the first of a trilogy and what a great start to the series it was! I really enjoyed the characters involved and the magic element to this fantasy was really interesting and felt wholly unique. I loved the introduction to this world and it felt kind of similar to the level of adventure of that in The Hobbit. There were a few times where some of the action sequences felt a little confusing but overall, I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I can’t wait to experience more of the world building, as well as continue on the adventure with Perin and Trace. If you are new to fantasy or want a good magical fantasy adventure trilogy this is a great start that I believe will appeal to a lot of readers!

In this book, I really enjoyed how Perin and Trace explored their intriguing new magical abilities, forming a bond of friendship and trust. I also enjoyed the character of the old magic woman, Marda.

At the beginning of each chapter, there were quotes from the Bible. While these added a fantasy-type flavor, they were used totally out of context, especially when verses about God were used to reference the novel’s storyline/characters. I did, however, appreciate that Perin’s rape scene was handled briefly with no details; all we needed to know was that it happened and that it affected her trust in people (men) afterward. Good choice, there.

There were a lot of spelling and grammatical errors—it's/its, laying/lying, vile/vial, etc. The point of view changed frequently, often many times within a chapter, which tended to chop up the story flow. Overall, despite some repetitive traveling details and the need for more editing, the novel was compelling and kept my interest. The Wilderness of Thorns was a cool concept. The tracker, Brant, made a good, tough adversary for the heroes. The book ended satisfactorily, with plot threads left to continue on to a second book.

The Force of magic is a tragic story of war and the effects of it on peoples lives and the hope of a few who dare to oppose the evil regime. I especially like how the characters make decisions based on their end goals and not the tyranny of the urgent. I have a feeling that the heroes will overcome in the end, but I am curious about their paths.

3.5 rounded to 4: While the story took me one or two tries to get into, it ended up being a wild ride full of magic, great characters, and adept world-building.W he map in the beginning of Cairn was also a great visual. While I think in some respects, the book could’ve benefited from more careful editing to enhance the flow, I still think it was a strong read, and I’d return for the second eagerly.

My thanks to Booksirens for sending me a ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book...was tough to finish, truth be told. The synopsis sounded interesting and the overall foundation of the book is solid. But that potential is let down by two main issues: the characters are one dimensional and not very interesting and the way the book is written is jarring and confusing. The characters as a whole I found boring and easily forgettable. The dialogue felt forced and unreal, and the character interactions were bland and completely linear: meet new people, trust them. The end. But while the bland and boring characters were an issue for me, the way the story is written only exasperated the problem and is my main issue with this book. The author continuously shifts POV every other page. It's jarring and it kept me from really forming any kind of feelings for the MCs. Just when I was staring to like a moment in the book, the author would immediately change to another perspective, all in the same chapter. It was irritating and completely unnecessary.

In conclusion I feel like the overall ideas of the book are good and there is the potential to create a great series, but the author just needs to adjust his writing style. Instead of constantly shifting perspectives every other page, the author should dedicate whole chapters to a single POV. This would allow readers to get to know the MCs and start to actually care for them and their issues. All in all, this was a tough book to finish, but I hope that the author can make changes in the future so that the series can realize its full potential.

I chose The Force of Magic by Hunter Chadwick thinking I would be getting an epic fantasy and it is but I would say, more for a younger audience than myself. With that in mind, I am reviewing with an attempt to imagine what a 12 to 15 year old reader might like in this story. The main characters of Trace and Perrin are thoroughly likeable and you do find yourself routing for them. Each has been traumatized by the wicked Dominion Empire; Trace as a reluctant conscript to their armies and Perrin as an abused slave. Both gain fantastic powers as the results of being the subjects of dark, magical experiments. This makes them valuable property and things get wild when the pair escape. Their flight and what their powers mean to the Dominion and fledgling resistance make up the bulk of this story.

I like the characters and I really liked the 'scientific' approach the sorcerer Karven takes to magic. One can picture him in his laboratory scribbling his notes and observations about one subject after another. His cold-hearted obsession is countered balanced by the empathy of the other characters, especially Perrin and Trace. There is some solid world-building and Chadwick spends some time establishing the boundaries of this world to good effect. If I had a gripe, it would be in those action scenes where the tension is not fraught as it could be considering the danger involved. This is partly due to the author describing things along the lines of step by step- Character A did 1, 2, 3 because Character B did X, Y, Z. This is where, as a reader, I was wanting to be drawn deeper into the story through how the characters were 'feeling' in scenes of heightened risk/tension rather than just what they doing in the moment. That might a personal preference though and the more basic approach might be fine for a much younger reader. However, The Force of Magic is a fine story with a promising continuation for the following books of the series and that's why I gave it the 4-stars.

The Force of Magic is a classic fantasy adventure that follows the fate of two unlikely heroes, Perin and Trace. Imprisoned by the Dominion, both are of special interest to the evil wizard, Karven, who experiments on them. Lucky to survive from drinking the Elixir of Life both gain magic-enhanced abilities. Perin has ghost-like abilities, allowing her to slide through doors and furniture. She can even float, though she has no control over it. When she accidentally saves Trace by freeing him from his cell, the two break away from the Brotherhood and the evil wizard Karven.

With no money and no family left, they are forced out into the harsh world to make it on their own. Deep in the woods, they stumble upon an old witch, Marda, who goads them onto their quest. Perin and Trace are determined to find others who are against the Dominion, but they must be careful not to fall back into the hands of the Brotherhood.

This is a great old school fantasy quest. Think of it as a faster-paced Wheel of Time with the conscience of C.S. Lewis. Chadwick does a great job of putting you inside the head of his characters and letting you feel their emotions as they struggle to survive.

I found it to be captivating and heartwarming. This is a wonderful Coming of Age story filled with the raw desire of youth to build a better world.

Rather sweet YA fantady

The Dominion hold the land of Cairn in its grip.
The overlord is ill and has urged the Guild of Helm to find the secret to eternal life.
Karven, Lord of the Guild doesn't care how many people die in his experiments.
But two escape before death can take them. Trace, who never wanted anything more than to be a farmer, and his new young friend Perin who was recently made a slave.
Trace and Perin are not the only two to escape death after the experiments, and a race to find the others is on.
Will a tiny group of people with super powers be able to take on and bring down the wicked Dominion? We will have to read book 2 to find out because this ends on a cliffhanger.

What a great beginning to an epic story. We have two people Trace and Perin who have been experienced upon and have escaped Karven when Perin inavertently floats into Trace's prison cell. We feel all their emotions as they are always looking over their shoulders as they evade Karven's army and try to find those who oppose the Dominion. I look forward to reading the next book. The Force of Magic is book 1 in The Force of Magic Series by Hunter Chadwick. I think that this book is very interesting and the author took me on a surprising journey. Trace and Perin are great characters and together they and their friends stand against Karven and the Dark Brotherhood. I found the ending had a big surprise that I was not expecting…. perfection. This was a pretty cool story that blended genres. It was like superheroes taking place in medieval times.

Imagine X-Men meets Game of Thrones.

The storytelling is exciting and the pacing is great to keep you turning the pages.

Hunter is a great author who loves & cherishes books as any book lover. His books also reciprocate the same. Apart from The force of magic he has written 2 other novels which I am sure would as good as this.
This fantasy series has a very unique take on magic and its usability. I was connected to the story from the beginning itself. Plot is solid and has a good potential for expanding into subsequent books. The writing is smooth and easily understandable. Hunter has done a fantastic job in detailing the surroundings connecting the plot and overall setting of this story.
Story majorly follows Perin who is a young girl and Trace – a soldier. Perin gets an unforeseen job of protecting infact saving the world from Dominion. This is a group of people who serve the Overlord, an ultimate villain. Dominion is chasing Perin & Trace for their magical abilities but they are on run and in-turn looking for help. Book 1 is focused on escape and little adventure.
My only concern is sometimes there is a lot of detail given which is leading to reading block. I feel character building is slow. Overall, this is good book with 3.5 star rating.

First of all, let me thank the author and the publisher for providing me with this ARC, it was greatly appreciated.

And now, let's get to the review itself...
As to the whole idea of the book (planned out plot, scenes, characters etc) I was caught like a fish on a hook (as is obvious by me requesting the ARC). However, I feel that the issue (for me) lies within the execution. This was one of those books where instead of knowing the qualities and attributes of each character by their actions and thoughts, other characters directly name them ("[character's name] is ___, ___ & ___.). I personally do not enjoy this style of characterisation, but if that's your thing, you might very well enjoy this.

When it comes to the plot and the pacing - my general reaction was 'meh'. To be 100% frank, it felt like the writing of someone really young with a vision but very few skills in the actual execution of their plans. Yes, I'm aware it's a relatively short book, however, that doesn't give the author the green light to go ahead and enumerate all the scenes consecutively as if they were throwing it at us just to have it over with. Personally, I felt like I was being bombarded by one scene after another and had no time to get used to it as the progression from one scene to another was done quite poorly.

(Minor spoiler in the following paragraph - Slightly detailed description of a character)
And now, let me mention one specific thing that always gets my blood boiling when reading, especially in fantasy as this isn't as uncommon as one would want it to be. And that's the damsel in distress trope. Someone tell me why no author has caught on to the fact that the narrative of "big, strong men" protecting "fragile and weak women" is already overdone, mysoginist and frankly, no one wants to read about that. And solely for that reason the relationship between Perin and the other male characters gave me the ick throughout the whole book. The author also didn't waste any time whatsoever in expressly calling these men Perin's "protectors" *insert intense eye rolling*.

As I feel this review is bringing the overall rating slightly down, let me mention a few enjoyable things about this book:
•The realistic portrayal of the state of the characters after long and weary days and nights of exhausting travelling (no unrealistic cleanliness and rested bodies here).
•The ending was a nice little plot twist, something to catch my attention and make me slightly intrigued about a sequel.
•The interesting and intriguing "after-effects" *wink wink* of prisoners being experimented on.

Overall, I'm giving this 2/5 stars, because it would not feel right nor honest to give it any more, nor any less.

The Force of Magic creates two lead characters who have to explore their own growing abilities and friendship against a backdrop of fear and injustice. I was excited to begin the story, which got off to a really promising start. Unfortunately I found the rapid shift between the two protagonists view points to be jarring. The quick changes meant I found it difficult to emotionally engage and I think it stopped that characters from having the depth they might otherwise have developed.

The Force of Magic is worth reading, and feels as though it is aimed at a teen audience.

Thank you, Hunter Chadwick and Rockstar Book Tours for the opportunity to be on your blog tour. So now onto my review! As of today, I give THE FORCE OF MAGIC ⭐⭐⭐⭐!

I must first admit that I'm still reading this book. I received the ARC a week ago and have only been able to read a third of the book. So far, I'm enjoying the story and fully immersed in this world of magic that's ruled by a corrupt government called The Dominion.

I like the main character, a young man named Trace, and the opening line, "Every day was the same for as long as Trace could remember," is compelling and had me invested instantly. The second POV is of a young girl named Perin Ryda, whose family and the village were destroyed by the Dominion and she soon was imprisoned as well. Both have gripping backstories and instantly I was rooting for them both.

I highly recommend this book if you are a big fan of THE WITCHER and epic high fantasies such as SHADOW AND BONE.

A side note, I love the artwork and illustrations. Every illustration has an organic feel to it as if the world is wrapped up in the magic.

The Force of Magic: Book 1 - by Hunter Chadwich - 3/5

The Force of Magic is a book that shows us a world of magic and where war has devastating consequences and everyone on look for a cure all.

Main characters Perrin and Trace are enjoyable to read about and their character traits are likeable. Following them on their journey you do find yourself rooting for them and the best outcome with the path they are on. I do think the story was promising and it is an enjoyable book to read through. There were points in the story that seemed to carry on with no purpose, like it was just a word dump to fill the book up. I think this would be a great story and less criticism for a younger age group, so I will be recommending this to my teenager. As an adult this seems like it doesn't compare to recent fantasy books, I've read recently so it was refreshing to take a step back and read something light.

This book has a few issues that could be resolved with either mentoring from a more experienced writer or sensitive editor. The bare bones are there: the plot is fast moving and fun, the characters are likeable and easy to care about, the world interesting if a little underdeveloped. There are few grammar, spelling or punctuation mistakes, and the writing is straightforward and accessible.

There were just a few places where the book fell short for me. Firstly, the Bible quotes at the beginning of every chapter. Quotes using a variety of sources are great. However, all Bible quotes & nothing else felt like prosyletizing and almost caused me to DNF. I deducted one star for this.

Secondly, the chapters had numerous short, POV scene switches. Often, the same scene was told through Perin (female main character [FMC]) and then Trace's (MMC) POV without adding anything new and felt like filler. As well, the constant scene switching within chapters made me feel like I was reading something on Royal Road or Wattpad rather than a book. This detracted from the reading experience.

The other main problem I found was the writing style. There was a lot of telling, but that didn't really bother me. Heck, James Patterson and Lee Child have loads of telling in their books. What could have been better was if the author used deep point of view, so we were more inside the characters' heads, so that we had distinctive voices for them and felt their emotions more.

In all, a promising start that just needs a guiding hand from a mentor to bump it over the line.

Thanks to the author and Booksirens for the ARC copy I received for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a promising story that had me hooked from the start, although I found it a bit disappointing at times. I found the plot interesting and well laid out. I enjoyed the characters of Perin and Trace, although I couldn't form a bond with them really. As the story unfolded, I found that there wasn't much happening in most of the book and I was left wondering how long until something happened more than once (that is why I couldn't give more than 3 stars). As this is the first book in the series, I'm still curious to know what will happen next, but I'm in no rush to read the next book as it was a bit boring at times.

Thank you to Rockstar Book Tours and the author for an ebook version of The Force of Magic. I will only be posting the description on my tour date due to the rating of this book that it was gave (placeholder) since I DNFed at 80%! It wasn’t holding my attention and actually made me feel super confused with how it changed character pov so much (why not do a 3rd pov that could jump character to character?)! I’m sorry
