“Don’t Judge a Duke by His Cover” is the first book in Emily E.K. Murdoch’s newest series - Dukes in Danger. This series has definitely started off strong with a plot that kept me entertained and engrossed from the first page. I thought the characters were well rounded with unique personalities. The two MCs are Lawrence, Duke of Penshaw, and Julia Dryden - each had unique ambitions and were brought together during risqué situations - their meeting could have gone wrong in so many ways. A relationship that begins in a dangerous situation and involves mystery, deadlines, and a few punches; two excel at witty banter and this mixture leads to passionate relationship. This is a light, easy to read romance, the characters battle society norms and there is a “who done it” mystery added in.

What Drew Me To This Book:
I was initially drawn to this story by its gorgeous cover and intriguing title then I noticed it was a new series by Emily E.K. Murdoch and I had to grab it!

The Blurb:
Lawrence, Duke of Penshaw, is undercover and getting punched on a daily basis.
Devastated by the murder of his brother by a traitor to the Crown, Lawrence agrees to leave his identity as Duke behind to go undercover at an illegal boxing ring in London. He’s waiting for the killer to return from France, and absolutely must not get distracted. Especially by a beauty from Society who absolutely should not be here.

Julia Dryden knows her mother would be scandalized by her presence at the boxing matches—it flies in the face of their agreement for her to choose a husband by Easter. After all, she isn’t getting any younger. But her eye is caught by a tall, handsome man who gives everything in the ring and seems to have no fear of danger.

From two different worlds—but not the ones she thinks—Julia has no idea the man she’s falling in love with is not a common rogue. And Lawrence has to keep it that way for if he loses focus, just for a moment, he may lose everything. The chance to catch a killer, put a traitor behind bars, revenge his brother…and Julia’s heart.

What I Liked:
A fun romance with a HEA. Intriguing plot. Some unique interactions between the MCs 🥊

What I didn’t Like:
The female MC behaves way out of expected standards for the timeframe. The mystery aspect was not very in-depth and I thought it could have been expanded.

Overall 3.5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ | 2.5 Flames 🔥🔥 - I will be on the lookout for the next book in this series.

The start of a new series & I’m a bit on the fence about it. I liked both Lawrence & Julia & thoroughly enjoyed how their romance grew, I enjoyed their banter & liked the chemistry between them. However Lawrence was undercover to find his brother’s killer & I expected this part of the book to be more developed but it was lacklustre. I also couldn’t believe that a young lady of the ton would wander around London without a chaperone nor would her brother take her to a boxing match. It was well written but my views about it are conflicted.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I was surprisingly enthralled with the characters in this book. I picked it up and read it straight through.

I really enjoyed the rough and tumble undercover gig that Lawrence had. He pulled off the humble boxer living off of very little quite well. The characters just felt "real" to me. Julia went places ladies just didn't go and said whatever she thought. I loved the romantic that was about true feelings for eachother instead of letting rank get in the way. I liked the bonding over boxing that happened.

My favorite part was Julia's boxing lesson. It was very simplistic yet very romantic. I think she made need some future lessons since she isn't afraid of being in dangerous situations.

This series started off super strong! I hope that is just a good sample of what is to come.

Thank you to Dragonblade and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for my honest review.

I enjoyed the free humor between Julia and Lawrence. The romance was sweet and charming. I loved the easy pace of the book. It’s a good page turner that focuses in on Lawrence and his hunt for answers to the questions that weighs on him heavily. It’s happen stance that Julia and Lawrence Cross paths in the most peculiar way that starts the beginning of their romance. My favorite character has to be Julia. She has Lawerence chasing after her mostly to keep her from getting into trouble. Mainly in the ring. I enjoyed that the story took place out of the ton and in the streets of England.

Don’t Judge a Duke by His Cover by Emily E.K. Murdoch
Dukes in Danger 1

Hoydenish young woman of the ton meets Duke masquerading as a boxer while working undercover to catch a treasonous murderer…should be interesting and filled with intrigue but…sadly…not.

Julia Dryden pushes her brother to take her to a boxing ring in a questionable area of town, distracts one of the boxers to the point he is knocked out, and she feels compelled to check to see if she is okay. She tells her brother to leave her and go home…and he does. I kept reading to see what would happen, see if she would have a chaperone, see if she did anything ladylike at all and…again…suspended belief to keep skimming the story.

The romance between Lawrence the boxing duke undercover and Julia the independent naïve hoyden who ran free through London was SLOW. The mystery and search for the traitor was more a matter of waiting for the man to appear, and the class issues were overcome by some with greater ease than probable.

This is a romance with a happy ending that did not draw me in, make me feel invested, or care about the outcome…and that made me sad.

I think that some will enjoy this story, but it did not work for me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dragonblade for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Kicking against the goads, Miss Julia Dryden is frustrated with the rules of society and the daily dictates of her ambitious mother. She, therefore, persuades her reluctant brother to take her to a boxing match and finds herself entranced by the tall boxer who seems in command of the ring. Until he isn't. When Lawrence comes to after a disastrous match, he finds a society beauty gazing down on him, and so begins his slide into romance and love. As an agent of the Crown, and undercover at that, Lawrence finds it increasingly difficult to resist the persistent Miss Dryden. I expected the novel to have some suspense and a certain amount of sleuthing to discover the whereabouts of the traitor who murdered Lawrence's brother, but the only suspense lay in trying to keep his cover under Julia's constant probing. The novel is witty and entertaining, it is a standalone and does come to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this romance as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Lawrence, the Duke of Penshaw, is working undercover as a boxer in the Almonry Den. He hopes to draw out the murderer of his brother and a traitor to the Crown. Julia Dryden wants adventure and persuades her brother to escort her to the Almonry Den. The man who catches her eye is the boxer, Lawrence Madgwick. Mesmerized by the man she comes to know, she accepts him through the eyes of love. Lawrence can't believe this young woman doesn't care if he is from a different class. A total distraction, is it any wonder he falls for her, too! When his mission is over will she still love the man behind the duke? This is strictly a romance with obstacles of class and secrets. Julia is very sweet, open and independent. Not just any woman can grab the attention of this duke!

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. This in no way impacted on my view.

Losing his brother to a traitor, Lawrence, Duke of Penshaw, agrees to go undercover to discover who the murderer was. Fighting at an illegal boxing ring by night, Lawrence is shocked to discover a society lady at his matches, especially when she returns night after night. Julia Dryden knows she is risking a lot to watch Lawrence, but after her parents decree she must marry by Easter, she is ready for one last hurrah before she is forced to settle down.

When I saw that Emily had a new series coming out, I jumped to download my eARC, and dove straight in. I liked the banter and camaraderie between Julia and Lawrence, especially as Julia believed they were from different classes in society. They had an easy relationship with one another, and it was clear that though the sparks flying were full of lust, there were real feelings growing underneath. The mystery aspect of the story perhaps could've been developed further, but the danger the pair were in was real, and the ending came with a bang. A great start to a new series, though, definitely setting the stage for future books!

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is book one of a new series by Emily E. K. Murdoch. It follows the story of Lawrence, Duke of Penshaw. He was a second son who unexpected gained the title following the death of his brother. He has suspicions on how his brother died and has gone undercover in the seedier side of London, as a fighter in illegal boxing matches, hoping to catch the suspect in his brother's murder.

Julia Dryden is a spirited, privileged young Society miss who seems to enjoy pushing the boundaries, and wants to live life as fully as possible before submitting to her promise to her mother. If she does not endeavour to find a husband by Easter, her mother would pick one for her. However, in the mean time, she sneaks out of the house following her young brother to seek adventure. She ends up where no lady should, at ringside at an illegal boxing match. She and Lawrence catch each others eyes and he is distracted enough to lose the match... and ends up waking up in her arms.

Julia believes Lawrence is a working class man making his way through fighting, but cannot help but fall in love with him. She knows they are of two different classes. And they are, just not the way she thinks. Lawrence, despite his connection with Julia, cannot give up his quest to bring his brother's murderer to justice, and thus cannot tell her the truth.

This was a fun story with a twist on the class theme, and the entire time I was reading it, I kept hearing the Eye of the Tiger in my head, because I kept connecting Julia and Lawrence to Rocky and Adrienne... and his trainer to Burgess Meredith's character and Julia's brother to Pauly... if only Lawrence had two pet rats called Cuff and Link...

Julia's character was a bit over the top for me in how bold and free to roam around in the seedier parts of London without coming to harm, or being found out by her mother, or being seen. But it was a fun, entertaining little story to read.

I read one book by Emily EK Murdoch back in 2019 and she didn't blow me away so I didn't get anymore. But I've read all my regular authors new releases and now looking for more to read until more of my regular authors have their new releases out. I asked a few FB groups for recommendations of authors to read. One said Dragonblade Publishing, which a few of my favorites authors are with, had a “Flame” division and Emily EK Murdoch had some books in that division so decided to try her again.

Well there was nothing "flame" about this book. Saying it is a steamy regency is a stretch. She isn't bad, just boring. I felt things were missing. Maybe all the missing information was spelled out from another series and then she started this one. I don't know. It was just off. She never says why the brother was murdered (not a spoiler, it's written in her story description). She never explains who the murderer was to his brother. If she did, I totally missed it. Granted I did skim a bit. There was way too much time spent in the "boxing world" on boring stuff and not enough time in the Duke world. The characters seemed to have no astonishment when they find out he's a duke. It was just like, Oh, Okay, cool! Just an overall disappointment. Now I know why, even back in 2019, I didn't want to read her again.

Sorry I'm not usually critical of my authors. I guess that is why I stick to the ones I know and love.

I was happy to see a new series from Emily EK Murdoch, but this book did not quite meet my expectations. The book tells the story of a duke who has gone undercover as a boxer to try and track down the man who killed his brother and the feisty woman who comes from the Ton - though not the Duke's circle in the Ton - and captures his attention and eventually his heart.

Lawrence and Julia's romance is super slow-burn and while there is some insta-lust, would be better described as friends to lovers. I didn't mind any of the characters, but the plot happenings seemed incongruous and impossible for the time period. Julia constantly wanders around London on her own, even while her mother is hoping she will make an aristocratic match. She attends multiple boxing matches without anyone saying a word or bothering her. She almost never goes to ton events, despite having a mother Julia describes as being overbearing. Lawrence remarks in his mind about Julia's lack of chaperone multiple times, yet the issue is never addressed in the narrative.

The plot point around Lawrence's brother's murder wrapped up in a very anti-climactic way. It made the whole undercover expedition seem a little pointless. Overall, I give the book 3 stars. I like Ms. Murdoch's writing and would still read more from her.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dragonblade for an ARC of this book. The opinions herein are my own.

This is the first installment of what looks to be a delightful series! I always love picking up a book by Ms Murdoch, and this one definitely did not disappoint! Lawrence is the Duke of Penshaw. He is working undercover as a boxer to find the murderer who killed his brother and who is also a traitor to the Crown. Julia is looking for some excitement and adventure and convinces her brother to escort her to the boxing ring. She is enthralled by Lawrence and fascinated by him and her attraction is strong. They both easily fall for each other, and disguised as he is as a commoner, he can't believe Julia has fallen so hard for him. He has fallen equally as hard for her. He wants her to love him for the man he is and not his title, so he keeps his true identity a secret. Julia does not care that he does not have a title, or so she is lead to believe. She falls in love with this man who seems to be making a hard, honest living.
The love story between these two was wonderful and I was completely pulled into it. The story was well-written and entertaining and the characters were well-developed and endearing. I enjoyed the story and look forward to continuing the series.

Thank NetGalley & Dragonblade Publishing for getting Don't Judge a Duke by His Cover

I started this book and got hooked at the beginning. Then everything started to go downhill.
So what hooked me is that Lawrence is undercover as a boxer who fights almost every day to find a man who murders his brother. Then we meet our main female charter, Julia. It's insta love. He lost the match when he saw her for the first time. Then he almost even forgot why he is undercover. He forgot about the person who murder his brother just because of her. I love when our main charter is in love but this was too fast. Too insta love. I didn't like how there we almost zero search for murder and just them being together nonstop. I love when there is a hunt for that person when we know more about them not just how they love each other. Other than that and other than Lawrence was undercover and his job we almost doesn't know anything about them. This is a book about romance without proper character development. Without that mystery and hunt for murder, I wanted to be. But I am not a writer and MB someone will love and enjoy this book but for me, it was missing something.

The setup is ridiculous really. I'm amazed that I didn't DNF.
The Duke, Lawrence goes undercover as a bare-knuckle boxer to find his elder brother's murderer. The villain is also a traitor to the Crown (though the details are very scant).

The heroine is Julia, a gentlewoman who moves in the middle circles of society. She sneaks into the boxing den with her brother and meets Lawrence.

Jules and Lawrence fall for each other, with her believing he is a poor boxer with no prospects. Lawrence is amazed that Jules loves just him, without knowing his title.

The plot-holes in this story are everywhere. Julia just comes and goes as she pleases. Lawrence fights every other night for 6 months but is never recognised (because he grew stubble). He still speaks with almost perfect diction and his manner is that of a gentleman the whole time.

The murderer's capture takes up less than half a page, though it was Lawrence's only reason for going undercover in the first place.

I skipped through so much of this, just to see what happened when Julia found out Lawrence's true identity at the end.

This book contains very mildly descriptive love scenes.

The Lady and the Fighter:
We meet Lawrence (who is really a duke undercover for the crown) boxing his way to find another boxer who is a traitor and murdered his brother.
While being pummel badly in the ring he makes shocking eye contact with a young lady engrossed in watching him and this fun and exciting romance story takes off from there. The strong pull of desire between Lawrence and Julia is all consuming.
Julia an upper-class lady who should not be seen in this apart of town. Society would call scandalous behavior and could ruin her reputation.
I truly enjoyed the story even though Julias behavior seems fairly preposterous.
The characters were delightful and full of spark with lots of flirting and desirous kissing which leads to a very happy ending and a lovely heartfelt confession.
The story points out how difficult living under societies class rules can hinder one's feelings.

I wanted to like this book but there were too many parts that were weak.
Lawrence has gone undercover as a street boxer in order to find the man that killed his brother. Nobody can know that he is a duke.
Julia's mother has demanded she marry by Easter but she would rather be unconventional l. Convincing her brother to take her to a boxing match.
I did like the relationship between Lawrence and Julia. There was instalust but they do spend a lot of time together and become friends.
That was my first problem, Julia never had a chaperone , she just wandered around London when she wanted, skipped invitations etc.
Lawrence lies to her for way too long. I feel like the truth should have come out much sooner so she could help with finding the killer.
The investigation was barely that, there was no real attempt to find the killer. And the way he found him was pathetic and dull.
This should have been a better book.

The start of a new series. The hero is undercover as a boxer, looking for the man who killed his brother, the previous Duke. The heroine is fiesty and wants to go and see a boxing match. She manipulates her younger brother into taking her.. Donald is dismissive of Lawrence and you know that when Lawrence says we aren't the same rank in society, Donald/Jules think they are above Lawrence whilst her realises that they are much below him. Lawrence likes the fact that Julia likes him for being the man he is and is willing to risk all by marrying a boxer. Julia's mother is a bit of a snob and has threatened Julia with finding her a husband if she doesn't find one herself. I thought the under cover but dragged a bit too long and there was a sudden rush at the end, It requires a lot of suspension of belief as Julia should have twigged Lawrence's vocabulary (incongrous?) wasn't the normal speech, neither were his table manners. Overall a good start to the series.

Slow Moving Plot.
I didn’t find this story very feasible, surely a Duke would have hired someone to go undercover, not left his comfortable life to get punched every night and live in two squalid rooms for months on end? Who was dealing with his ducal/familial responsibilities? I also found the numerous boxing matches rather boring and found myself wanting to skip pages; I didn’t but oh I wanted to. Then there was Julia, how was she able to go about London unchaperoned? I didn’t understand how, when not accompanied by even a maid or a footman, she was never accosted by anyone, either around or within the boxing venue; and to go there on an almost daily basis when she should have been attending balls and dinners and had a marriage minded mama beggars belief. There was no sneaking out of events, her brother seemed to have little concern about what might happen to her and I was unsure why there was no gossip from her and Lawrence’s meeting on Rotten Row. All in all it was not one of the better books I have read this year.

While I was hooked with the premise of this book, (I liked the idea of a lady falling in love outside her class) I was very disappointed with the result. I spent most of the time reading with incredulity! Julia tags along with her brother to a boxing hall near the docks of the Thames, where they meet Lawrence. Yet for months after, when Julia goes by herself to the boxing den about twice per week, she goes unaccompanied and dressed as a member of the ton. She is not accosted by either beggars or robbers or molesters! And no one notices?!?! She doesn’t try to disguise herself as a lady’s maid or stable boy. I was disappointed there wasn’t any sleuthing for the villain. And finding and apprehending of the villain was so anti-climatic, I almost missed it. Most of the story revolved around the slow courting dance between Lawrence and Julia as they get to know each other.
Overall, a disappointing read for me.

If you’re looking for a romance with plenty of intrigue, this is not the book. Though the romance was fun and sweet, with a little spice, the intrigue is not really there. His being undercover for the crown was barely mentioned, and was almost a throwaway few lines. I feel like I learned more about him in the blurb than in the book. The same could be said for his sister, for apparently he has one, but we knew nothing else about her. I did generally like the story and the happy ending, but if you’re going to talk about being a spy or undercover for the crown, I’d like that in more than a line or two in the book, other than to say, “I wish I could tell her, but….” Overall, if you’re interested in historical romance, this is still a fun book, but don’t expect a madcap adventure, just some sweet romance with a little tension.

Lawrence, Duke of Penshaw, is working undercover as a boxer to find and capture the traitor who murdered his brother. It’s not the life he’s used to, but he hasn’t done badly in the ring. Until…Miss Julia Dryden distracts him. Julia is rebelling against the rules of society and her mother’s ultimatum that she wed by Easter. One trip to the boxing matches with her brother and she is hooked, on Lawrence, and boxing of course. The attraction is mutual. The problem is that she distracts him while he is in the ring – ouch. The plotline is serious and dangerous, and interactions between Lawrence and Julia humorous and annoying (on Julia’s part). The first book in a new series has love at first sight, lessons in trust, surprises and a happy ending. I look forward more stories.

the arc of the story is not as important as the relationship

The arc sets up the reason for Lawrence being undercover but doesn’t really drive the story. The story is propelled by Julia’s impatience, whimsy, impulsivity and drive for adventure. It felt like she was slumming looking for a good time in the beginning of the book. It was attraction and lust in the beginning. She wanted freedom from her society rules and the boxer who she lusted for offered her that. For Lawrence he too was offered an opportunity to be free of society rules. He had to hide his true identity and she fell in love with him for him. I found this story boring and lacking in true adventure. I had to force myself to finish reading it. If you like just romantic interactions between two people for the whole story add a star. The very end was cute and the author created consistent characters.

A Great Series Starter!

I’ve been looking forward to a new series from Emily and found this first book in the series a lovely read. I loved the take on the story around boxing with a Duke in disguise and Julia who was quite an independent person.

Attraction flares for both of them when they first see each other but Lawrence doesn’t need any distractions from the mission of finding his brother’s killer. Julia wanted a little freedom from the rules of the ton and being at the boxing ring with her brother was a start.

A fun regency romp of a story which is entertaining but not to be taken too seriously with a HEA! I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

Lawrence is living undercover to catch the traitor who killed his brother. Nobody from the ton would dream a Duke could be living on just the money he makes in the boxing ring.

Our hero is putting his life in danger every time he gets in the ring, especially when there is a distraction.

Julia Dryden is a rebellious young lady bored with the restrictions allowed her. Luckily her brother is easily bullied by her to take her places she shouldn't go to. Who knew how attractive a common man could be?.

This is the first book in a new historical romance series that I will definitely be following. Lots of fun with wonderful characters. A strange conclusion to the reason he is undercover though.

Great fun.

This story would have been awesome if the mystery/espionage plot was involved or shown more. Don't get me wrong, the beginning sucked me in, but as I when I got to 10 mins left in the book, I'm like OMG really this is going to be it?! By the very end I can't help but wonder if these characters would carry over into the next book (according to the title this is #1). Things sorta moved too fast and honestly I felt like I was missing some points.

This was my first read by Emily, however I'm willing to try out other books she has written. I also love this cover.

I loved it this one was a rollercoaster ride! Secrets and undercover lover included!
Lawrence is a Duke and Alan is also on assignment to capture a traitor to the crown who also killed Lawrence brother!
Lawrence is beaten and bruised all in the name of the crown and draw out a traitor before he can harm more people!
Julia Aka Jules loves boxing and bribes her brother to take her to the ring. She is transfixed and somewhat brazen in her pursuit of Lawrence but she does not back down!
She loves the man and his honest way of living! You will have to read to see how brazen she was and how she took him anywhere and everywhere while he was undercover!
Love the intrigue and mystery but the romance was better! Lord of humor! Bravo!

This was okay. I feel like we didn’t spend enough time doing the undercover hunting for his brother’s murderer thing. Julia kinda got on my nerves bc in one breath she’d be kind of making poor jokes at Lawrence and then be like “oh I understand how difficult it would be to not be wealthy like me” and I was like uhhhh okay girl. I also feel like the reveal that he was a duke was a bit lackluster. Also was very annoyed that Lawrence found his brother’s killer off page?? Like we have POV chapters from him why would this key scene not be on of his POV?? Very strange. Julia harped on about the class difference constantly. I got it the first 10 times I didn’t need a million more. I would be willing to try others in the series because they could definitely improve in story arc.

Oh so good

What a way to start a new series.

I love how this duke is a boxer undercover and isn't willing to risk his cover even for the woman he loves. But that's because he wants her to love the man he is not for his title. Once the danger is over he realizes that she loved him for who he was.

She wanted an adventure and she got one with a boxer who took her from the first moment she saw him but she didn't judge him for who was only that she wanted him as her own regardless of their class difference.

Premise of this story

Don't judge someone based on what they have or what they don't have. For their heart is rich.

I look forward to the next story in this series.

A Duke in disguise and a Society Lady meet up at a boxing ring. The Duke is looking for the murderer of his brother. The Lady is escorted by her brother to the boxing site in the seven dials area of London. Most unusual, and not really allowed by Society’s standards.
Mystery, intrigue and temptation are surrounding the main characters, who were well written and wonderfully described by the author. Truth comes out in the end, after dealing with the murderer, and they get their HEA.
This was a great start to a new series, and I’m looking forward to the next instalment of The Dukes of Danger series.
