overall, i enjoyed this book and was excited to see where it lead once i got more into it, it was a great set up for the next book, and was very well thought out and a lot of work has gone into it.
i loved the modern witch vibe and the book was very heavy on politics which i also enjoyed, however it took me a while to get used to the government officials and i still don't completely understand some of their roles.
i do feel the magic system was a little vague and there's a lot more i would have liked to learn about it.
i also feel the plot didn't really pick up until over half way through the book, there was a lot of information being thrown at me that i couldn't wrap my head around. it was clever and well thought out but could have been explained a couple more times in various ways if that makes sense so that the information really stuck.
the same with the main characters best friends, i don't know if i maybe wasn't paying as much attention as i should have but it took me a while to learn what they looked like and who was who, even thought there was only three of them, im not sure what was up with me there.
the way the characters emotions and thoughts were described was amazing, i felt very connected with the characters and understanding of their trauma, family relationships, panic attacks ect. the writing was very indepth but flowed very naturally too.
The premise of this book was really intriguing. The story itself is interesting and I found myself liking most of the main characters. I enjoyed the world and the different magical systems.
I felt like a lot of information about characters was thrown at the reader all at once at the beginning of the book which made it really difficult for me to remember who was who (especially government officials and members of the prominent families). It got easier throughout the book with Bethan's friends as you got to know them more and I did enjoy how distinct all their personalities were.
My main criticism is that I do think this book could have benefited from further editing. There were so many sentences that just didn't make sense, sections where it wasn't clear what character was being talked about, and a lot of repetition of phrases and statements. Despite that, the ending intrigued me enough to want to read the next one whenever it comes out!
