It’s closing in on me when he finds me.
He’s the light at the endβ€”
even if the glow comes from horns and not a halo.
I’d climb into his rib cage and stay there,
stoking the fire he claims doesn’t exist,
because I know what it’s like to be trapped
in a cottage made of bones.
I’m not worried.
He wouldn’t do anything to hurt me.
He belongs to me just as much.

I pray to nothing and no one.
I’ve always been sin incarnate.
Wrapped up in thorns, always chasing blood;
the only thing that makes me see Heaven.
Until she falls back into our world
and I’m enrapturedβ€”it’s sickening.
She’s the only one who soothes the chaos.
I need her.
And I’ll burn down the whole damn valley for her,
in every lifetime.
We’re the same. She’ll see.

this was such a labor of love for me as my debut and i love these two so much.

Soren & Talia are messy, complex people, who fuck and love hard. but this book is about so much more than them. it’s also about the dynamics of friendship; loyalty; most of all, the complexity of trauma and PTSD; battling demons, and the way β€œthe body remembers.”

Twisted Trees, Flawed Fruit is the first book in The Tempted Valley Series by Ara Zapanta.

ARC Review

"Every bit of skin has its own purpose. Its own story and prayer."

i'm left speechless by the sheer talent this author has. and the fact this this is their debut makes it 100 times more impressive.
i've read so many books, yet none has had such an effect on me like this one.
soren & talia's story is raw, every emotion had been ripped from beneath me while i read this. somehow i feel so very strongly connected to this book and the way it didn't force any emotions out of me, man. it's so amazing.

Soren. i think the complexity of his character makes it so much more easier for me to connect with.
Talia. i feel like i was looking at another, more mature version of my own self.
it was soothing, while it broke my heart one by one into tiny pieces, each one of which told a new story.

this book just keeps you wanting more. and more. and more. like you never want to get out of the world so beautifully created by Ara. i got curious with every page i turned.

the smut was so hot, it had me sweating.
the connection the MCs shared was also extremely strong.

this book is a masterpiece.

i'm looking forward to more answers and more exciting ones from the author!

i'm so very proud of you, Ara. this is absolutely beautiful and heart wrenching and consuming. i loved every word, every emotion that came with it. your immense talent is something that shouldn't be trapped, and i'm grateful this one is finally out for the world to read.

I must preface this review by saying this it is totally biased. Not only is this story written by my bestfriend of over 10 years, but it is a universe that we have spent the last year, eating, sleeping, and breathing in, together. Much more than just being an Alpha, a Beta, and an ARC reader, I saw this story grow from the very beginning. Every character, every idea, every scene. I couldn’t tell you how many nights we spent brainstorming, writing, table reading, editing, and conceptualizing this book. There is no way that I could see it as anything less than perfect.

I’ve always known Ara to be a writer, and when I first decided to try my hand at it 4 years ago, she was the only person that I could think to share it with. But today, I have the pleasure of knowing Ara to be an author. And after you all read this masterpiece, you will too.

As for my thoughts on the book itself, it is near and dear to my heart for a multitude of reasons. First being the obvious. Second being that I know the places in this book. I spend every summer in Kelowna, I live in Canada among the stereotypes portrayed in these pages. I KNOW these people. Third being the fact that I love me a good morally grey man, and I love even more when an author isn’t afraid to push those boundaries. As a woman who was raised by men, I find that women often soften the male voice - perhaps in fear of backlash, but I find it is usually due to lack of experience. Ara did NOT hold back with Soren, and as an avid reader of Bukowski, I would expect nothing less from her. I love that Soren, through his male crudeness, feels 100% REAL. There are layers to him, and not all of those layers are appealing. That is what a morally grey man REALLY is. And last, but most definitely not least, is how this book is written. Ara has a way with words that manages to weave the most gruesome of things together in the most melodic of ways. I feel every single line in my bones. Feelings that I never would’ve known how to put into words, Ara does seamlessly. Which I think makes this already compelling story, that much more intoxicating.

I received this book as an ARC, in exchange for my honest review!

Just wow, what a journey. This book made me feel SO MUCH, from happiness to frustration to pain and everything in between. Let me just begin by saying that this book has many trigger warnings and you should 100% read all of them before deciding to start this book, don't say I didn't warn you. But if you are good with all of that this book is completely and utterly worth the read. (Very minor spoilers ahead)

The story is real, and above all these characters are complex and REAL. They are not perfect, their relationships are not perfect and they don't always act the way that they should. Life is messy. This made me fall for the main characters, and made me feel so deeply for them when they went through their stuff. There is some really really good trauma representation in there, raw and completely unfiltered.

Talia and her friends have such a natural dynamic and I love the name Leftovers. Soren is the kind of character you know you shouldn't fall for and then do so anyways. He feels more than he lets on, and I live for the moments where he lets Talia in. They are so different and yet they work so well. Also think Denver is underrated!!! The cliffhanger at the end way sneaky and I want to know what happens next like right noww. But yeah I really loved this book so much, and the fact that this is her debut just makes it even more special.

OMFG 😭 I am actually so sad to be done this book! That ending though…. Y’all lπŸ‘€

I came across this author and their book by luck, and I am so so happy that I did. I loved every second of this book. While it is a long book, there are so many complex layers to this book, and I found myself so invested in this story.

I can’t wait for book two! Trust me you need to read this! πŸ’• fantastic debut❀️

Just know my review will not do this MASTERPIECE justice in the slightest, alright?

Now that that’s out of the way β€” ARA?!! GIRL, HOW IS THIS YOUR DBEUT?? This book was so beautifully dark, and deep and just all things that I’ll never be able to put exactly into words.

Twisted Trees, Flawed Fruit was just one of those books that felt like home. The writing, the depth of the characters and their traumas and relationships β€” all of it was just πŸ˜—πŸ‘ŒπŸ½ and this was a thicc book, y’all, yet every single scene felt necessary and purposeful. I never found myself bored or skimming. I found myself wanting MORE by the end.

I loved how much depth and time was spent building our characters. I loved that by the end of the book our characters weren’t just perfectly happy in love and free from the trauma, ect.. we are left knowing that our characters are still growing and healing and I loved that.

I guess my only β€œgripe” would be the 3rd act conflict. I wasn’t a big fan and felt it came out of nowhere.

Going into this knowing it deals with very heavy topics such as eating disorders, child SA, mental illness, and sooo much more. If that’s something you can handle then enjoy this wild ride.

This book was so good.
It captures your attention from start to end. I didn’t even notice how obsessed I became with it until I started to slow my reading process so I could have some more time with these characters.

If you’re looking for something unexpected, dark, obsessive but nothing like you’ve ever read before and well written? this is it.

I don’t want to spoil anything, all I can say is this writer definitely knows how to make you feel as if you where inside the story, living each single moment of it as If you where the main character itself.

This book was so beautifully written - it’s honestly unreal to me that this is a debut. The writing is absolutely captivating. Every single emotion that Talia and Soren felt - I felt it too… the good, the bad, and the ugly. To be honest - this one was a slow start for me. It took some time for me to get used to being so deep in Talia and Soren’s heads. But after some time you come to understand them so well - and I truly did appreciate that. They are two incredibly complex people with a lot of trauma - and a lot of this trauma is addressed in the book - so I recommend reading the trigger warnings for this book very carefully.

Reading Soren and Talia’s point of views as their relationship began to evolve was something I really loved about this book. It felt realistic for me - we see all the little moments that start to chip away at their walls… and the second guessing and uncertainty that comes with getting to know someone new. I found so much of it to be relatable.

Soren and Talia have such a powerful chemistry and the spicy scenes really matched that - they are dark, delicious, and intense. There’s so much that they are scared to let show about themselves but they find acceptance in each other. You can tell just how huge that is for these two characters who have really struggled in that way their whole lives, and I really loved that!

This book is THICK (yes, the caps are necessary) but it’s worth it. I’m excited to see what’s coming next from this world!

WOW! This book was a beast, but once you start you get so consumed by what you are reading that you forget everything else for a while.

The story is dark, gritty, raw, emotional, and twisted. It will rip your heart out and leave you a sopping mess, as it is a heavy story. It takes you on an emotional and bumpy rollercoaster ride that you won’t soon forget.

Soren and Talia’s story is a journey like no other. They are not perfect, at times they are toxic and messy, but their connection and bond is stronger from the pain and heartache they go through. These two dug some intense emotions out of me that I wasn’t ready for. The realism of the trauma that they endure brought the story to life. You felt their emotions, their pain, their anger and their desire and passion. It oozed off the pages and sunk deep into your heart and soul while reading it.

Soren and Talia’s chemistry was explosively hot, delicious and insanely intense. You knew these two were meant for each other and that together they could both eventually start healing.

Filled with action, suspense, violence, drama, mental illness, and a toxic messy love that is all consuming.

As a debut novel, this was a masterpiece of poetic and poignant writing. It will draw you in, captivate you and keep you hooked on what transpires right before your eyes. I was riveted to my seat the whole way through, and I never wanted to let these characters go at the end.

Well done. Loved it.

Whew! Where do I even start… In TTFF we explore the dynamic between Soren & Talia, a beautiful, broken and completely toxic couple that you can’t help but root for. We spend so much of this character-driven book in their minds, learning the inner workings of these characters and processing events WITH them and it is a ride. We have Soren, this man who is blunt as hell and surprisingly as close to an open book as can be expected with a character as traumatized as he is and Talia, a woman who is extremely closed off and hard to understand but she’s trying to both figure out and process her trauma so we have to give her grace for that. And then we have all the friends and family who, whether good or bad, have had a huge and fundamental impact on the lives of these two characters. Getting to see the world and explore traumas and kinks through Soren & Talia’s eyes was beautiful, heartbreaking and scary at times but so very real.

TTFF is Ara’s debut novel and they killed it! Their writing style is beautifully poetic and immediately draws you in and keeps you invested in the characters from beginning to end. I can’t wait to get more of Soren & Talia.

CHECKING TRIGGER/CONTENT WARNINGS IS A MUST!!
