Emma Turner has spent eight years running, hiding, dodging…limiting her short stays to big cities where she could easily get lost in the crowd. But when she steps onto Tempest Island, something changes. The tiny island speaks to her in ways no other place ever has, and tempts her into breaking the life rules she established long ago to keep herself safe. Instead of taking a couple days off and then moving on, as originally planned, she applies for a job at the Island Surf Shop, despite the risky fact that she’s horribly attracted to the owner.
Since his wife’s death a year ago, Mark Phillips has done the best he can to put life back together for himself and his five-year-old daughter, Lily. Now he needs to give more attention to his somewhat neglected business so that he doesn’t have to worry about their future. Emma Turner has all the job qualifications he’s looking for, and he can’t help feeling drawn to the auburn-haired beauty.
But Emma is keeping secrets, and they’re about to catch up with her.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon was raised in southwest Louisiana among the bayous and gators. Her hometown is Carlyss, but you probably won't find it on a map. Her family owned a camp located on a bayou just off the Gulf of Mexico that you could only get there by boat. The most important feature was the rope hammock hanging in the shade on a huge deck that stretched out over the water where Jana spent many hours reading books.
Jana and her brother spent thousands of hours combing the bayous in a flat-bottom aluminum boat, studying the natural habitat of many birds, nutria and alligators. She would like you to know that no animals were injured during these "studies," but they kept makers of peroxide in business.
Jana has never stumbled across a mystery or a ghost like her heroines, but she's still hopeful.
She now resides in Dallas, Texas, with the most spoiled Sheltie in the world.
Emma has been on the run for eight years after fleeing for her life and she is taking a vacation before she settles into another anonymous job in another big city. On her way from Tampa to New Orleans, she stops on Tempest Island off the Florida Panhandle and feels as if she has come home. That is just ridiculous. If she stops running her past might catch up with her. But Tempest Island is so beautiful and the people so warm and welcoming and her new boss, widower Mark, so hot. Could she stay?
It got old, really, really old, being reminded in every chapter that for Emma everything in her life was temporary, lest the reader forget. That is really my only problem with this book. It is a Cozy-Romantic-Suspense much like Jana Deleon's early works. And the last 20%, really suspenseful and it was worth the small imperfections to get to the awesome ending. 4 1/2-Stars
Book #3 is "Undertow" due sometime in 2023. Goodreads doesn't have it listed yet so this is a note to me and anyone else who may be interested.
I feel like a traitor to a good friend, but this book just left me indifferent. No real character development other than the older ladies ( a little bit). The romance felt forced and there was no good explanation for Josef’s obsession. I hope the next one is better!
This book is set up differently from Backrush (#1) which started with the history of the crime and the protagonists long trip back home to Tempest Island. Adrift (#2) starts with the beginning of the crime, then it cuts to present day. It was easy to follow the different time changes and made the start of this book much faster flowing.
The protagonist in #2 has been on the run for eight years. She lives like a fugitive. However, she is innocent and organized crime people are tracking her down.
I enjoyed the writing and the narration very much. However, there was one point in the plot that felt very unbelievable to me. I knocked off a point for that glaring mistake. The last 1/4 of the book is high action and great fun to listen to. There are several plot twists that almost gave me whiplash!
All in all, I enjoyed #2 and recommend it to you.
I am also looking forward to Book #3. From the description it sounds like Aunt Bea is going to play a pivotal role. It is supposed to be out in 2023, but I’m not seeing any publishing date yet.
Another great visit to Tempest Island and things there are seriously heating up… It really is a budding wonderful community, well mostly lol there always has to be a few bad apples at least these ones are all from the one toxic family and I’m presuming they will eventually get a good dose of karma. But to Mark and Emma and Lily I’m over the moon with that ending, even the added drama on the boat lol I’m loving the future I can see happening for this amazing little family
Oh my stars!!! If you liked the first book in this series, sit down and prepare yourself who a whole new level of suspense and excitement. She saw her father murder a man in cold blood. Suddenly, the world she thought she knew unraveled as truths became lies and danger grew. She managed to escape that night, but her parents didn't... And she been running ever since.
Tempest Island is beautiful. Tourist season is almost underway! Though for the 8 years that she has been running, Katrina, now known as Emma, has stayed near larger cities where she could blend in. Stopping at Tempest Island had been a last minute thought on her way out of Florida intending to make her next stop New Orleans. The island was serene, tranquil, the people warm and welcoming. Surely she could stay a few days and relax without worrying if she was still being followed, hunted, stalked. What happened in those next few days would change her life and those on the islands lives forever.
This is the 2nd book in the Tempest Island book from Jana DeLeon and it does not disappoint. This book is fabulous!! It has romance, mystery, suspense and murder !!! This book follows Katarina who had to flee her old life and assume a new identity on the run. She has been looking over her shoulder for 8 years and finally stops on Tempest Island to rest for a few days. She spontaneously applies for a job in a surf shop to do accounting. Katarina or Emma as she is now known feels she will be safe for a few weeks on the small island. She hopes her past doesn't catch up with her since going to small towns is such a deferent from what she normally does. Just as she finds herself falling for a guy her past just might change her plans and send her on the run again.
Jump the Shark For Emma/Katrina! 3.35***** Spoiler Alert!
Katrina, after witnessing her father murder a man and learnt that her mother was in cahoots and in bed with the local Russian mob king( her daddy), she disappeared with the help of a the future DA, only to turn up on Tempest Island, got an accounting job, only to be recognized by Ivan, her hunter's cohort ...you get the picture, too many far reaching coincidences for this novel to flow like book one. I gave up trying to find the Chaos Theory behind this novel by the time they stole and sunk a USNaval boat without repercussions. Read at your own risk. The theme revenge is a dish served cold and money is the root of all evil!
Such a great read. I truly enjoyed it. I was enthralled from the first chapter. The little island has a lot of charm on it's own but when you add the characters it becomes epic. I couldn't put this book down until I finished it. I had to know what happened. There were quite a few surprises that made the book even better. If you like action, adventure, love and friendship this is a must read.
Emma was a woman on the run. For eight years she had stayed ahead of Joseph. She was tired of running and she stopped at a island off the coast of Florida. She wasn’t looking for a job but found one anyway. She made a friend on the island and it turned out she loved her job. Would she stop running? Or would Joseph find her? Did she want to trust those she liked. Read this story to see what happens to her. And all the twists that the story takes.
I struggled to finish this. Halfway through I started skimming paragraphs because it was so syrupy sweet and repetitive. One minute the child is talking like a baby the next she sounds like a 30 year old. The last straw is when the villain shoots (and sinks) a military Kodiak with a handgun, in the dark, during a storm!! OMG this was the worst writing! I like the Miss Fortune series but this series is S**t out of luck!
Not as good as the first book in this series. I was rooting for the couple, the main characters from the first book were heavily involved which I like so I could find out how they were doing, and still like the other characters on the island. But the concept was very similar to the first and there was a lot more thinking (and repeating of those thoughts) than action. Also, the end was a bit over the top.
I am unlikely going to read the next in the series
Jana DeLeon isn't known to me because of her Fortune books. However, this book and the one before it in the series have been tremendous...one of those books you can't put down. I encourage everyone to take this journey. You will be glad you did..I know I am!
I have loved all of Jana's books from the very first Miss Fortune books I've read all 23\25 I can't remember. But they are all 5 star books to me. Love this series too. Gertie and AnnaBelle are a hoot. Jana seldom is my favorite writer. Can't wait for the next one.
Jana as always delivers .great book . But her miss fortune books are and will always be my favorite and then her mother in law series are a close second bottom line if jana deleon name is on cover I buy it I do not even read the reviews and I have never been disappointed.
Jana never disappoints! Richly drawn characters you can hope & believe in. The heat & breeze of a Gulf Coast Florida evening. An evil character you want to see get their due. All requisite for another exciting Jana DeLeon novel! Can’t wait for the next one❤️
No matter what happens in our lives we can never outrun our past, it will always catch up and effect our present. I love how Emma learned to finally trust again and find love the first time. Excellant keep you on the edge of your seat book. Definate 5 star
Great story lines and interesting characters are Jana Deleon's specialty and this one doesn't disappoint. She also continues the story from book 1 keeping the great characters she created in the mix of this book. Loved it!
Great suspense leading up to a powerful and exciting climatic ending. I thought the story was going to finish in another book as the suspense kept building right up to the end!
I began reading it at 7 am and finish it at 11:45 pm could not put it down. As always the story was great and it was like I was there and as it was raining here I had sound effects when it was raining in the book
Emma was a very brave women so glad she find Matk and friends. I would recommend this book it keeps you second guessing every turn you take never thought it would turn out how it did but I'm very happy it did.
Jana delivers again. By far one of the best authors out there. Even though I try to not read her stories too fast to let them last longer, I always finish them in just a couple days. Eagerly awaiting the 3rd installment!
I love everything that Jana DeLeon writes and this series is no exception! I love her strong female characters and her plots. Looking forward to another book in this series!
This was a lovely story and expanded on the characters from the first of this series. I like the little hints in the story regarding who the woman was who brought the bad guy to Tempest Island. Melody?
Once again, Jana DeLeon has written a warm, engaging and suspenseful book! I was definitely on the edge of my seat near the end! I can't wait for the next book to come out!
I’m never disappointed when I pick up a Jana DeLeon book. I can’t wait for the 3rd installment in this series . It’s written perfectly with the story unfolding in a way that just pulls you in and you can’t stop r easing! Loved this book!
I really enjoyed the story. I didn't want to put it down, and I didn't want the story to end. There was quite a bit happening at the end of the book that took me by surprise. Can't wait for book 3 of this series.
Jana Deleon is an on the edge, peripheral writer. This has some struggled romance. And a drowning ending! Start with the first in the series. Then read Miss Fortune series for fun. Then Hard core Shaye Archer!
Once started, the story is riveting. Our heroine has been spending the last 8 years hiding and attempting to stay alive. She finally finds her hero and a safe place to land.
I like the series, 75% of the book was great but the end was just too far fetched of a resolution. The last 10 pages or so were action packed but completely took me out of the story into a fairy tale like happy ending.
Another good story from Jana Deleon. The second in the series gives us more details into the lives of the residents of Tempest Island while telling the story of Emma and Mark.
