The Patient's List

Rate this book
The new patient whispered a list of names. One by one they're each dying.

Rina Kent was the new hot shot psychiatrist at Holy Saints ward. She also recently married the love of her life, who's also a doctor at the same hospital. Rina felt on top of the world, until one of her patients committed suicide.

Rina knows it was her fault.

A year later, her marriage has already gone down in flames. All she has left is her patients, but she's lost her confidence to help them.

When a suicidal teenaged girl comes to her ward, Rina sees a second chance to help the patient she couldn't save. The new girl won't say a word to anyone though and Rina's colleagues already feel she's a lost cause.

She begins to wonder if her peers are right, when one night the girl shyly walks up to Rina and whispers a list of names.

What Rina can't understand is why the last name she says is her ex-husband's.

James Caine, the author of The In-Laws, and The Girl Outside, offers another psychological thriller novel with many twists and turns that you will not know what to believe or who to trust.

I can’t stand mental health workers who behave unprofessionally again and again. If that happens, I can’t enjoy the story.

I’m not sure if this is marketed as a thriller, but it didn’t chill my spine.
I’m not a critic I’m just relaying my thoughts personally to how I felt about this book.

It wasn’t executed very well, a bit messy which led me to keep rereading just in case I missed something.

From the blurb of the book I got excited to think, oh this sounds right up my alley. And it is, it would have been, I’m no expert at writing a book just reading and enjoying one. It must be very very hard to write a book.

My personal thoughts though is that it needs some expert eyes upon it.

Firstly I would like to thank netgalley, and victory editing netgalley co-op,and the author James Caine for a copy of this book to read.

I was looking forward to reading this book, as by the description, but I dont like giving negative reviews, this is my honest review this book. I didnt enjoy the characters, or the storyline, Rina a psychologist her marriage fell apart after a suicide of her patient. She is given a list of names by another autistic patient including her ex husband, as on the list they end up dead...does she find the answers shes looking for.found to be to slow for me.

A list of names inside a mute patient’s journal collides with a mystery involving murder. Dr. Rina Kent finds danger and death lurking behind every corner. This strong female protagonist is the driving force in this fast paced thriller that I couldn’t put down. This is a quick read that kept me intrigued from start to finish. As usual James Caine delivers a page-turner that doesn’t disappoint. Thank you to the author for my copy.

A psychiatric doctor detective

Rina Kent is a psychiatric doctor who had a traumatic event in her practice and needs help herself, but she continues working in a psychiatric ward taking midnight shifts.
One day in the ward, Amy is admitted after an attempted suicide. She is an autistic patient who doesn't speak and is only humming a nursery song. Rina tries to establish contact with Amy who one night whispers a list of four people to Rina. One person is already dead. Are others in danger too?

This is not a bad book, but it is a bit messy and Rina is breaking rule after rule not caring about professional ethics or law. As for the end, it generates more questions than answers.

Rina Kent is a Psychiatrist and has a way with some of the more troubled patients that allow them to open up to her. When one of her patients commits suicide, Rina loses all confidence in herself, her marriage has broken apart and she feels lost. When Amy, a new, mute patient is admitted Rina decides to try and see how she may help. She is shocked when Amy whispers a list of names to her and her husband’s name is one of them. How does this patient know her husband? Rina is on a quest. I thought this was a good, fast mystery. I received an advance copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Not my favorite this year. I thought it was going to be a thriller but it did not thrill me at all. The story was below average, kind of all over the place. The main character was annoying and weak.

Ugh! That silly predictable ending was flat. A huge eye roll moment for me.

Not for me.

Happy Reading 🍷

Dr. Rina Kent, the rising star psychiatrist at Holy Saints Hospital, is on the top of the world. Newly married to Jonas Kent, the ER doctor at Holy Saints, she is eagerly looking forward to her upcoming two-week honeymoon in Aruba. Then, tragedy strikes, and Rina’s patient, Jenny, commits suicide. Rina blames herself, and her downward spiral causes her to lose everything: her promotion, her reputation, and finally, her marriage. She relegates herself to the midnight shift, having lost all confidence in her ability to help her patients. Amy Deaver, the niece of Phyllis Deaver, the hospital’s chief of pediatrics, is admitted to the ward after a suicide attempt. Her mother, Marie, is in a self-imposed exile, missing but, according to Phyllis, does not wish to be found. Neurodivergent and non-verbal, Amy keeps a journal tightly clutched on her person at all times. Although she is the patient of another colleague, Rina sees the chance to help Amy after the other doctors have given up, deeming her unreachable. She might be Rina’s second chance at saving someone after losing Jenny. One night while working out in the hospital gym, the power goes out, and Amy wanders in to find Rina. She whispers a list of four names to Rina, and the last name on the list is Jonas Kent, Rina’s ex-husband. The first two people on the list are murdered. Determined to find out why, Rina breaks protocol and sneaks a peek at Amy’s journals. Besides a note from her mother, Rina finds the same four names written over and over on the pages. Can she figure out why Jonas is on the list in time to save him—and herself?

“Amy, always know that your mother loves you. I will do anything to make sure you have a better life than I had. I will do anything to protect you. No matter what happens, always know that everything I do, I do for you. No matter what happens, never say a word.” This is the chilling quote from the Prologue that is written in Amy’s journal by her mother, Marie. It sets the tone of the novel from the point that Amy is introduced, when the plot escalates and becomes a tumultuous story until the shocking climax. It’s very clear that the teen and the struggling doctor need each other in ways that even they themselves don’t understand. I never saw the final twist until it happened, nor the reasoning behind it until I thought back and realized that there were breadcrumb clues scattered throughout the red herrings. “The Patient’s List” is a very well-constructed novel from the Prologue to the smooth and satisfying ending, and I believe that all of those readers who are as enthralled by thrillers and suspense as I am will enjoy this engrossing work.

I’d like to thank BookSirens, James Caine, and James Caine Publishing for the ability to read and review this ARC.

3.5⭐️ this was an easy and fast paced thriller! It was a quick read that will help your reading goal for the year. This is an indie author I never read before and will most likely read more of his books. I love a good thriller that keeps my attention and has me guessing until the end. And an added bonus that it’s available on kindle unlimited! I recommend it if you are in the mood for a thriller based out of a hospital and its doctors who work there.

It must be really hard to write a novel, so it’s not easy for me to give a bad review but I didn’t like this book at all. The idea was brilliant, but the execution was lacking. The characters were all nasty, which would have worked had the heroine been likable or relatable. No one has consistent behaviors at all and go from: “you’re so brilliant” to “I knew you were useless” (I’m paraphrasing here). Rina is unreliable and flaky but we’re supposed to believe she’s a great psychiatrist. The resolution is completely predictable. The chapters are mostly about Rina but, out of nowhere, there are some about a detective who presumably belongs to the Keystone Cops. The dialogues are stilted and full of useless details that are supposed to pass for character development. Lastly, I was appalled at the view of mental illness. Thankfully, I don’t have personal experience with it, but I watch movies and I know how mental health professionals have psychiatrists. Rina “overcoming her guilt at being a psychiatrist who needed therapy” (this is a literal quote) makes it sound like there’s a stigma about it. I don’t mean to be too harsh, I just wanted to explain why I’m giving this novel only one star.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, #NetGalley/#Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op!

4.5 spectacular spooky stars ⭐️

Holy twist and turns! I was hooked immediately. This is a fast paced who done it thriller. Just in time for spooky season.

Rita Kent was an up and coming new psychiatrist at holy saints hospital. She loves her job and is fantastic at finding new innovative ways to connect with her patients. When Jenny one of her patients commit suicide her life spirals out of control and comes crashing down.

A year later a new patient Amy joins the ward. She is autistic and doesn’t speak. Rita finds herself becoming involved although she is appreciative, afraid of screwing up again. That is until Amy whispers a list of names that sets off a chain of events no one saw coming.

This gripping psychological thriller had me on the edge of my seat it was a wild ride!

Special thanks to NetGalley, James Caine and Victory Editing doe my Arc in exchange for my honest review.

I love James Caine! This isn't my favorite of his but it was available on audio, so it was the first book of his I've listened to. The narration was good and the story was solid, it just wasn't the shock I'm used to from him. He's spoiled me! Still very good though and a quick read or listen.

Anyway I would still recommend it, especially if you're into medical and/or business dramas. I would probably describe it more as that than a psychological thriller.

"Ligtning illuminated the room, and the area outside the window. Rina looked up when she saw someone standing outside, staring back at her through the glass."

Another fast-paced, brilliant read from James Caine. I enjoyed the plot, there was a mixture of likeable and unlikeable characters, and the perfect amount of suspense that keeps you guessing throughout.
Please just be aware that there are mentions of suicide, and the book is very centred on mental health so if this is be wary if this is a trigger for you.

Scandalous Spiders! 😳😯🤯😳

This quick thriller-read was so fun and so twisty!
While the writing at times felt a little choppy and not super smooth, it still managed to flow quite well and I was very happy with what Caine did! I absolutely loved the premise and plot of this novel and how the story unfolded with the characters. I honestly couldn't get enough and I was pleasantly shocked by that ending! I was so gripped by the shocks and surprises in this novel! Lord knows how many times I tried to guess along the way and I was wrong every single time! The fact Caine is also a fellow Canadian was a boost of admiration for this author. I'll definitely be checking out his other books as he's got some serious potential and a fluffed up mine which I love!

Mყ 𝐒ყɴ𝐨ρѕιѕ: Rina is a year into her psychiatrist position at Holy Saints Hospital and loving every moment of her job, while also in contention for the Chief position. Being newly married to Jonas, who works as an emergency doctor, she feels complete. But the day she's to leave for her honeymoon, a patient of hers commits suicide on the ward. A year later, separated from Jonas, feeling guilt over her patient Jenny, and barely getting buy with her job in the same position. A new patient is brought to the ward - Amy, who is an autistic young woman and the niece of a fellow colleague, is deemed to be a lost cause as she's mostly mute. That is until she utters names to Rina... names that appear to be on a murder list.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.

A lot was left unclear and confusing because the writing was lacking, abrupt, and jumped around too much. I was so interested in the plot as it was right up my alley but the whole thing fell flat in execution. The characters were all horrible people which made me care very little about what happened to them. The dialogue was stiff and unnatural. The pacing was way off.

This is a thrilling story about a mute (autistic) girl who has strange ties to murders. The protagonist is a psychiatrist who has going a little crazy due to one of her patients committing suicide. Her normal caring attitude is now apathetic as she doesn’t want to become involved in another heartbreak. It caused so much damage to her psyche including a failed marriage. But the autistic girl is pulling at her heartstrings again, and she is determined to find out how to help the girl as well as solve the horrific murders. It’s a good book with some heartbreaking consequences.

4.5⭐️

A great discovery this author. I liked him a lot, he has kept me intrigued and, although you suspect some things, you still get some surprises.
The life of the psychiatrist Rina changes when one of her patients commits suicide, just the day that Rina was going to go on her honeymoon. Rina feels guilty and it ends up affecting her work and her marriage.
A new patient is admitted, the niece of a pediatrician who works in her hospital, the girl is autistic and has been admitted for attempted suicide. Rina doesn't want her as a patient, but in the end Amy is the one who approaches her and gives her a list of names, including her ex-husband.
Rina begins to investigate and try to start more conversations with Amy to get to the bottom of it, especially now that the names on the list are turning up dead.
Highly recommended.

4.75 stars easily. With the amount of thrillers I’ve been reading, I’ve gotten extremely good at guessing plot twists but I would’ve never in a million years saw this coming. I had to reread the last chapter because I was so stunned (about the ending) that I thought I’d read it wrong. This book was amazing and exactly the thrill Id been craving from a book. I have zero clue why this author is not more popular because these books are truly so well written. I highly recommend.

I want to preface this saying that I have autism and I think in patterns and psychological thrillers are my favorite books and movies. So, I have a lot of patterns to pull from. But, I figured out less than 100 pages in, less than half way through the book, who the culprits were. Part of me likes this, a larger part of me doesn’t. I like to be thrown off and not see the twists coming. Admittedly this is hard to do.

Also, due to my neurodivergence, I have no qualms explaining what I didn’t like openly. There’s poor character development. Rina, the main character, is touted by the summary to be a big hot shot psychiatrist. However, we really don’t see this. I was also frustrated that we didn’t really get any depth to her career or even really see any psychiatrist thinking in the narrative. If I were to compare this to other books I’ve read with therapists or psychiatrists, usually you’ll get some insight into how their brain works as a professional. This was utterly lacking. I felt let down because we keep hearing how great she is or was and then see none of it really. She’s more of a detective.

The author seemed more comfortable writing from the detective’s stand point. The writing felt more on par with a detective’s perspective. But, it was the typical obsessed detective with poor manners that is slowly revealed to be an acquired taste. I’ve seen and read a million like him before.

I think the author has potential. But, the ideas weren’t fleshed out fully. This book had the potential to be more. Sometimes less is more, but not this time. I wanted more development. There was little time spent on the marriage of the main character in the early book, so I didn’t care about their dynamic. There was little character development all the way around. So, I just didn’t care about them. I’m still not even sure why Dr. Knowles was included to be honest.

The book did keep me reading. I finished it in a day. I don’t regret reading it. I guess, I just wish the experience had matched with the excitement I got from reading the summary. It did have me on the edge of my seat at moments. But, ultimately I was disappointed that I figured out the culprits so early and the ending was one that I think you’re supposed to sit and think on, but I just didn’t care to. It didn’t make sense.

I hope the author continues to write and doesn’t take reviews too personally. I think he could grow. :)

I found a few typos/errors which I always find distracting from being fully transfixed in a story.
The twist at the end was pretty good but at the same time I expected most of it. I was hoping for a much creepier tale than what it was. I mostly spent the whole book feeling bad or annoyed with characters, not heart racing like I think the author was trying for.
It's an OK quick read but probably won't recommend it or pick it up again.
