Joseph is the third book in Lucy McConnell and Ellie Thornton’s Black Ops Tag – Mission: Harvest Ranch Wedding series. Joseph is a clean military romantic comedy, featuring the fake-relationship and apposites-attract tropes. It is highly recommended that you read the first book, Andy, before reading Joseph so that you are familiar with the characters and their antics. Timewise, the events in Joseph occur at the same time as Andy and Chris.
Bree Gallagher is an analyst for the IRS who finally has her first undercover field assignment. She is a brilliant hacker, martial-arts master, and neurodiverse Converse-wearing ball of enthusiasm that lacks social skills and boundaries. She is paired with uber-handsome smooth-talking Joseph Murphy, an experienced IRS investigator that has the highest case clearance rate. Joseph is assigned to the case because he is a groomsman for the wedding of his Army buddy and an up-and-coming Senator. It appears that the bride’s campaign funds are being used in a money laundering scheme. Bree is told to pose as Joseph’s date for the week-long wedding festivities and serve as a bridesmaid.
Bree is very different from Joseph’s past girlfriends and ex-wife, who all could be fashion models. Bree is fit and has a nice figure, but she hides it under unattractive clothes. The other bridesmaids take in her hand and give her a make-over, so she becomes beautiful. They like her because of who she is on the inside. Bree is on the autism spectrum and is aware that she is “different” from other ladies. However she has found ways to cope with her neurodiversity so that she is a high-functioning individual. When Bree isn’t busy with wedding activities, she is surveilling the suspects and hacking into their computer files. She seems to perform significantly more of the investigative duties than Joseph.
Bree and Joseph are very attracted to one another but they feel like they can’t act on their feelings because the IRS has a strict no-fraternization policy. So they kiss when they have an audience, and try to keep their hands off each other the rest of the time. The mystery of who is responsible for the financial irregularities keeps the story moving along.
All of the men in the 76th Military Police team are in their late 30s/early 40s but they act younger, in my opinion. Bree is 33 years old but she has no romantic experience whatsoever. Joseph is my favorite story in the series because Joseph and Bree are both smart, strong, and realistic characters. I recommend this Black Ops Tag – Mission: Harvest Ranch Wedding series for readers who like clean romance, military romance, or rom-coms.
