Stacy Lynn Miller is a retired Air Force officer who found her passion for writing after leaving the service. With twenty years of experience wearing a badge, working with computers, and investigating cases, she has created multiple award-winning thriller and suspense series packed with strong sapphic women, gripping stories, and a perfect blend of intrigue and romance.
Stacy is a visually impaired, proud stroke survivor, mother of two, tech nerd, and chocolate lover. She's also a terrible golfer who managed to get a hole-in-one! When she's not busy writing, you can find her playing golf or enjoying a glass of wine (sometimes both) with her friends and family in Northern California.
4.00 Stars. Good action and entertainment. With the end of 2022 winding down, I had realized I didn’t get the chance to read many action books, in fact hardly any at all this year. I love my YA books, and of course my fantasy and paranormal hopefully with a romantic twist, but sometimes I just want something action packed, with a fast pace, that has me highly entertained. This is where Fuze came in and was a safe pick for me because while I didn’t know Brian Shea, Stacy Lynn Miller, is known for writing some gripping action scenes, but can also add real emotions and even some romance into her action books. I was excited to try their collaboration and I’m glad I did because this was an entertaining read.
I really liked that the main character Lexi (nice name) was an ATF explosives expert. Her job was to disable mines, bombs and any other explosive ordnance. While we see that type of character in movies on occasion, I don’t remember too many books with this as a main character job, so I found it very gripping to read. I also liked that while Lexi was an explosive expert, it didn’t mean she was automatically a superhero in fighting skills and a perfect shot. She was an expert in her field but adequate in other areas because she didn’t need to be more, so it made the book seem very believable when she got into tight spots that she wasn’t a Mary-Sue character suddenly.
Part of what motivates the character of Lexi is revenge. Her work partner was killed in the same explosion that also took part of Lexi’s leg and her foot. We go through some rehab with Lexi and getting used to a prosthetic (which includes wound care and daily use). I thought this book is one of the most thorough books I have ever read on someone who wears a prosthetic. It’s not just mentioned once and forgotten about, instead it’s consistent, informative and felt very real. While my opinion is coming from someone who doesn’t know what it is like, so take it for what it is, but I was impressed.
While this is an action book, this does have some of Lexi’s home life. Lexi has a potential for a sapphic relationship, but you will have to read the book to find out. I would say this is about 75% about solving the mystery of who is behind the crime and all the action scenes, and 25% is about Lexi and her home life, family and friends. I thought it was a good mix. It was just enough to start to get to know Lexi a bit deeper, but plenty of mystery and action to keep the book fast paced.
Lastly, I find myself torn but I feel like I must give a TW. It is an odd TW because it is a TW that the authors never intended to have but because of events that happened after they had written the book, it turned into one. I am going to put it behind a spoiler and in the spoiler, I will just put in general what happened but not any story outcomes. While this is a TW that could affect anyone, it has the chance to affect people from the USA and possible some Canadians a bit more.
This book was a fun action ride and besides a couple writing bumps, this was a nicely matched writing duo. I just found out that this series is on Kindle Unlimited and that the next installment will be out soon. I’m excited and it is not often that you find action books about queer women ATF explosives experts, and I want to read more.
I received an ARC copy of Brian Shea & Stacy Lynn Miller’s “FUZE’’ (A Lexi Mills thriller #1) from Severn River Publishing (via NetGalley) in exchange for an honest review. So, here it is !!!
My rating : 5 ⭐️
FUZE is the first instalment of the new series, one promising to be intense & powerful. It focuses on multi-faceted & badass ATF agent Lexi Mills. On the same dire day during a failed mission, Lexi lost her partner, Darby, and half her leg. She handles her guilt the only way she knows: by vowing to take down the man responsible for the blast. When Lexi is sent to a border town to investigate a tragic explosion she is teamed up with Noah Black, a local detective assigned to the case. They soon agree that something seems off. Whereas she thought the worst was behind her, the deeper they dig, the more they uncover a conspiracy reminiscent of the same bomb blast that changed Lexi’s life. Now, the fuze is lit, and she is ready to explode … She’s torn between following orders and chasing revenge…
Brian Shea is a new-to-me author, but I’m very familiar with Stacy Lynn Miller’s work (I’ve read and loved all her solo books). I’m really glad about this unexpected dynamic partnership because, IMO, they make a powerful duo with their military and law enforcement backgrounds which bring authenticity to the plot. Brian Shea clearly has the expertise writing fast-paced, high-powered storylines. Where Stacy Lynn Miller is concerned, I feel that she is the one who, in this author duet, brings the experience of injecting emotion into scenes and writing characters with rich backgrounds. And knowing her work well, I bet she works her magic to make us (readers) want to root for the characters Brian Shea comes up with. I’m definitely all for that because the resulting series is very promising. They weren’t kidding, FUZE really is a propulsive action thriller with a fearless heroine.
Among the things I loved in this book, you' it’s the outstanding characters who felt real. The tension is intense in this fast paced novel & even if the events happening are horrendous (I won’t list them not to spoil anything); they’re described with a very much appreciated modesty … In addition, there are interesting and, sometimes, funny metaphors (e.g. : the one about the "fur chinchilla" … LOL … but to know what I mean, you’ll have to read the novel). The book is poignant, and you’ll experience a large range of other emotions while following Lexi and her temporary sidekick, both characters embracing their “otherness”. I LOVED FUZE from its great cover to the last word of the epilogue … I was totally hooked & I highly recommend it.
I'm looking forward to read Book #2 (and Book #3 and even, hopefully, Book #4) to know what'll come next in Lexi's adventures (I’m also curious to know if I guessed right when it comes to at least 2 of the bad guys). And, of course, I surely hope Lexi and Nita will have their HEA ...
So far Stacy Lynn Miller has not written a series that I didn’t like. Often so much happens and they are generally a little bit out of the norm, which makes it refreshing, so I was very curious how I would like this collab with Brian Shea. I was not disappointed, if you like a lot of action, this is the book to read.
The storyline is well-build starting with the introduction of Lexi Mills (an AFT Bomb expert), how she lost part of her leg, how she coped physically and mentally with that traumatic event and how it led to one of the best things in her life, her girlfriend Nita. But it also left her with unfinished business and a thirst for revenge. The romance in this book is only a minor storyline, but I liked it very much and it adds a lot to the character development of Lexi. Both ladies have baggage and their story is far from finished, I really want to know what lies ahead of them in the next book(s).
The main storyline is about an investigation headed by Lexi and she gets help from detective Black from the Nogales PD. The investigation starts small and becomes bigger as the story progresses and it is full of action scenes. It’s not so much of a mystery as you get to see the POV of the villains as well, although some things are kept in the dark for a while. The story wraps up nicely, but will be continued in a next book.
If I were to rate this on the storyline alone I would easily rate this higher, but the writing could have been smoother, especially at the beginning of the book the dialogues were a bit clunky and there was some repetition of certain facts. Maybe it’s the process of co-authoring and finding the right writing groove as it was less obvious near the ending of the book.
I can’t wait to see how the story continues and I noticed that it’s expected to published in February 2023, so the wait is not long. Recommended!
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I love that a person of colour, a woman who happens to be a lesbian is the main character to what looks to be a very promising series, because Lexi Mills is a total badass! The moment that Anita came into the scene, where she wakes Lexi was the moment I knew that something was going to go down - or at least one of them will. HAH!
The case Lexi is on was really tough for me to read though. The racism was painfully triggering because as a person of colour (who's too Filipino tanned 😜 to be Aussie) who did not fit in at the very White school I attended when I was younger, and growing older and better understanding what racism actually was whatwith having people say the most derogatory things to me just because my skin isn't white...
I hated it. I stil hate it. I hate racism. I loath bigotry in all forms - sexism, homophobia etc. I think that's why it took me so long to read this book. I got lost in my head but I think that's why Miller and Shea are such great writers. They wrote the words that can get inside you so you have to stop and take a moment. Let it settle and continue again.
Funny how a book that makes you think a certain way, won't mean the same to the person next to you 'cause of the different experiences you've had.
ANYWAY!
This book is really, really, REALLY good. GET ON IT!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Reading this book was a strange experience. On one hand I wanted to know what would happen, but on the other I was soooo bored. This is a new series Co-authored by one author who’s work I do enjoy (Miller). I’m just not sure if this series would work for me and if I will read the next book in the series. Which is out already as well.
I found this book too boring and predictable. Repetitive as well. At some point I do understand that both Noah and Lexi look “different” and that Lexi is an amputee that needs to care for her residual limb. I GET IT! Don’t need to repeat it every other page (slight exaggeration, but I need to make a point)
This is a story about ATF bomb expert Lexi Mills. Lexi has suffered a near catastrophic injury and as had her left foot and leg amputated at the knee. She is fitted with a prosthetic leg and foot. She begins an intense program to regain her strength and get used to the prosthetic leg. Her physical trainer is Nita and they fall in love during her rehab.
Lexi is looking for the person responsible for causing her near death accident and the leader of the Gatekeepers. The Gatekeepeers is a para military right wing group who seek to take over the US government. They are on a mission to stop illegal immigrants from entering the US.
Lexi starts her mission on the US border at Nogales AZ where she meets and teams up with detective Noah Black. Lexi and Noah form a partnership to investigate the collapse of a tunnel under the US/ Mexican border where several people are killed.
This book was high on action and the mystery of who is behind this organization trying to take down the US government. The romance is in the background but it is recognized and several nice and sappy moments occur between Lexi and Nita. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to action fans who like a bit of queer romance to spice up the story.
ARC received from Net Galley for an honest and voluntary review.
I enjoyed this fast-paced thriller featuring ATF bomb specialist Lexi Mills seeking revenge while tracking some rogue ex military types set on destruction. She teams up with Detective Noah Black to follow the evidence found in a tunnel explosion on the southern border.
I have only read one of Stacy Lyn Miller's books before Fuze and felt it lacked the punch I have come to expect in my thriller reads. Pairing with Brian Shea has raised the level of tension, action and unexpected events while still giving us some sapphic moments to enjoy. I'm all in for the rest of this series as there are bad guys to hunt and trouble in store for Lexi and I hope, Noah.
This book is the first of what I hope would be a long series, because I really, really enjoyed it. I've read Stacy Lynn Miller before and liked her writing, but still very happy that this collaboration with Brian Shea is top-notch. I really like the main character, ATF agent Lexi Mills, who lost her leg and her partner while trying to enter a compound with a doomsday-like group. Lexi, a biracial, gay woman, has to deal with the trials and challenges of living and working as an amputee plus dealing with survivor guilt. I enjoy the relationship Lexi has with her girlfriend, but just to be clear, this is not a romance-focused book. This is a mystery thriller that follows Lexi investigating a series of crimes that leads to a conspiracy among fundamentalist nationalist groups to eventually sow anarchy and overthrow the US government. The plot moves forward at a good, fast-pace, perfect for those of us who enjoy this genre of books.
** Thank you to Severn River Publishing for providing an ARC via NetGalley for an honest review!**
Fuze is a story about “otherness”, not the same as, different, imperfect individuals who don’t fit a “perfect” mold. Thoughtful portrayals of how it feels not to live up to what others think you should be, how you look, who you love, what you believe. It’s also a high octane thriller with a brave heroine in ATF Special Agent Lexi Mills. Following the death of her partner, Darby, and the loss of a leg on a failed mission, Lexi is thrown into a harrowing operation to stop home grown terrorists. She logs lots of miles traveling from Kansas City to her new base with the Dallas Feds then to Nogales. An extremist group at the border crossing has blown up a tunnel. Lexi is teamed up with an indispensable colleague in Detective Noah Black. Together they will face bombings, explosions, a church burning, gunfire attacks, nearly being blown up, and cheat death repeatedly. Lexi has a very personal score to settle with the radical group’s leader. Multiple hate factions are plotting with joined efforts to destroy the government. Lexi and Noah epitomize a very tactical, concise exercise in apprehending and preventing threats. It’s intense, fast paced, nonstop action. I have read several of Brian Shea’s books, but Stacy Lynn Miller was new to me. Both brought authenticity to the plot. The characters distinctive personalities were thought provoking and memorable. As the first in a new series it has an epic ending, sets up perfectly for additional missions but it didn’t leave me hanging, just waiting for more. I would like to thank NetGalley for the opportunity to read a digital advance reader copy of “Fuze A Lexi Mills Book” by Brian Shea and Stacy Lynn Miller and Severn River Publishing. These are all my own honest personal thoughts and opinions given voluntarily without compensation.
Lexi Mills is devastated by the loss of her partner and her leg in an unprecedented bomb explosion, while on a mission. Although, the temptation to give up is great, her quest for justice is greater! She undergoes intense training so her handicap does not become an impediment. Lexi is on a new mission against a sinister organization. Will she be able to thwart their deadly schemes? An edge of the seat thriller which had my heart in my mouth.
Fuze, by Brian Shea and Stacy Lynn Miller (wish I knew how they divvied up the writing duties on this one, because it's a blast!), is about Lexi Mills, our regular tough gal ATF explosives expert who, after a bad Chapter 1, loses part of her leg, all of her partner, and a lot of her purpose. She regains all of it, sans dead partner, by chapter 5, gaining a prosthetic leg and a new girlfriend in the process.
And a burning desire for payback.
Back in the field in Nogales, Arizona, Lexi is assigned to investigate a fatal explosion at a migrant tunnel...which leads her and hew new buddy, Noah Black, into a race against time to stop a white-supremacist terror cell from doing Very Bad Things.
The story is summertime popcorn fun. Nothing too deep and with a few narrative choices that left me rolling my eyes in a good-natured manner. I can't be disappointed when the story takes the audience pleasing way out of a predicament because the writing is so dang enthusiastic. Cliched in spots? Yeah, but I don't care because stuff is happening and the action moves at a brisk pace.
I was a little put off by the speedy introduction of Lexi's girlfriend, Nita, into the narrative and felt it was forced, but thanks to deft and chilling plot turns, she became an indispensable part of the narrative and I would have it no other way. The use of Lexi's parents was similarly melodramatic but it fit the tone and narrative as well and I won't complain.
The climax is absolutely thrilling and despite relying on outside forces to help save the day, our heroine has to puzzle forth a solution that saves lives and stops bad dudes.
Very easy read and enjoyable to digest. It's nothing mind blowing or wickedly new. It's just good, charming thrills, with a plot that races ahead. I, for one, am gonna hunt down the rest in this series!
This is a good start to a new series by Stacy Lynn Miller co-authored with Brian Shea who came up with the plot and detailed outline and Ms. Miller brought the story to life. Fuze is book one of the Lexi Mills Series which will be followed by Proximity (book 2) and Impact (book 3). This series features ATF Special Agent Lexi Mills, a bomb disposal expert who lost half her leg and her partner’s life after a wrong move during an operation. Now she is obsessed with hunting down the man who killed her partner.
Fuze is an action thriller with a lesbian protagonist but the focus is mainly on the action not much on her personal life. The book is action-packed and filled with detailed descriptions of bomb-defusing and special operations, and some of them will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Lexi is in a relationship that is very important in her life and presents its own challenges. Most of the beginning of their relationship and Lexi’s struggles after she lost her leg happens off-page, which is a pity because it’s very much connected to the rest, to Lexi’s feelings, and her behaviour. Even though the action parts reach a conclusion, the book finishes with an open ending about what will happen next in Lexi’s professional and personal life so you’ll need to read the rest of the series to find a satisfying conclusion.
Overall, a good action thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. 4 stars.
ARC provided by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ARC through Severn Publishing and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This story begins with Lexi and her partner Darby at a scene where they are laying a trail which is free from explosives. Darby is leading and Lexi is following in another section. An explosion happens with Lexi injured and Darby dying. The story then continues with Lexi rehabbing and striving to make it back to the ATF STR team. With the help of her therapist and later girlfriend, Neta. After 11 months she was finally assigned a case.
This case related to an explosion in Nogales where a tunnel between the two Nogales towns, 1 in Mexico and 1 in Arizona, resulting in the deaths of several migrants. She was to be a liaison between the PD and ATF. She met up with Noah, a detective for Nogales, and starting in investigation and made a discovery. Later in that same area a church was burned. With a discovery she made the two incidents were connected. A short time later a bank robbery happened in Texas where a suspect was captured. Lexi and Noah then went to interview the individual.
Once they got in Texas, they discovered a clue that was found in the robbers' vehicle. With the lead that they were able to develop from that, they then started getting closer to finding out what all these events had in common.
To learn what clue they uncovered and how it led to another event which happened and then all the pieces of the puzzle began falling in place, then you need to read this book. The conclusion and the events leading up to it are well worth it.
In the first chapter, we see how Lexi loses her partner during a bomb disposal event that goes very wrong, and also causes Lexi to lose part of her leg and foot. She spends the next year of her life working her way back to health so that she can rejoin the ATF’s Special Response Team. Now though, she has a special motivation for her efforts. She wants to find the criminal who murdered her partner and left her with a partial amputation. When she is sent to a border town to investigate a collapsed tunnel, she just might get her chance.
Brian Shea is a new author to me, but I’ve read several novels by Stacy Lynn Miller, and I recognized her brilliance in this story immediately. The characters are strong and well developed. I really liked how the authors worked in Lexi’s home life with her partner and family. These are not perfect people, and adding that in makes the overall tale more realistic. The setting fits perfectly into the narrative. The story is fast-paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
These two authors obviously make a good team, and together they have given us a gripping tale that thankfully doesn’t end here. There are more books coming in Lexi Mills’ story, and I can’t wait to read them.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Seven River Publishing for an honest review.
I knew from the start, I would either really like it or hate it. I'm stoked to say I just found my next series. This book hit so many different areas with their varied characters and not once was there a zinger about how x group is the horrid deplorable group that caused all the problems of the world. I enjoyed the fast pace of the story line and it worked. I was even more impressed to see that the story was impressive while still staying pretty true to police procedures. It wasn't until after reading the book that I saw the Authors' bios and suddenly understood why everything was so spot on. Thank you for a book that was fast, interesting, and didn't have the cops acting like bad guys just because its "just drama." It has a little something for everyone in it. Looking forward to reading "Proximity."
Brian Shea and Stacy Lynn Mills have created the beginning of a blockbuster series with ATF agent Lexi Mills. As you read this book, you cannot help becoming attached to Lexi and Noah – each so different yet in many ways the same. Fuze starts off with a bang and the action just gets more intense as the story progresses. This is one of those stories that is hard to write a review about because there are so many ways to provide unnecessary spoilers for future readers. The best thing I can say is to read the book’s description, grab a copy and settle into a comfortable chair because you won’t be leaving it except to maybe get a drink and I’ll bet your kindle will take that trip with you. I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher and chose to provide my review.
Lexi Mills feels responsible for the death of her partner after an explosion that not only killed him but also took foot. Having stopped in and seen her partner's wife and daughter which hurt her more than the explosion she has been sent to Texas. New people, New partner yet once she gets going into a case everything feels off, for she is thinking it is like the one that took her partners' life. Now does she follow the rules or does she follow her own rules and go after the person who was responsible for the last explosion? This is a good book with an ATF agent a female going after the bad guys and her wanting not only revenge but also justice. A good exciting story with good characters. I received this book from Netgalley.com
I have read several of the book series written by the author and looked forward to this release. Unfortunately as I progressed through the book I started to feel like it was a commentary on the difficulty of being a lesbian in a relationship, the problems faced with having a genetic skin disorder, the issues faced with living with a prosthetic leg, and the family issues faced with choices made. I realize that these are all important issues that need to be addressed but either you are writing an exciting fast paced novel or lengthy social commentary. I probably will not continue with this series. Sorry.
I enjoyed this well paced, well written story very much. The story flowed well, and while there are times when I would have liked to have understood the action taken a little better I found that I didn’t need to be buried in minutia, and I let the story flow as told.
There was a lot going on over the course of four days and in that regard, I thought the story moved, maybe too quickly, but it certainly kept me entertained and kept my attention.
I enjoyed the interaction between Lexi and her girlfriend Nita. And I enjoyed Noah Black, the Nogales cop who became somewhat of a partner to Lexi. I hope to see him in future books in the series.
This collaboration between Brian Shea and Stacy Lynn Miller sets the stage for the Lexi Mills series. This is a fast paced, action packed series debut with characters that are well developed, driven and who embrace who they are. Lexi and Noah’s investigation into homegrown terrorism was well crafted, intriguing and realistic. There was closure to the primary investigation in this book, but the teaser in the epilogue hints at the continued mission to hunt down the terrorists and eliminate the threat they pose. This is a very good start to this new series!
Fuze (Lexi Mills Book 1), my sixth read from author Brian Christopher Shea and the first in the Lexi Mills ATF series. Outstanding fiction, well-written with characters & plot you can buy into with unexpected twists & turns. Those who like Lee Child's Jack Reacher will be drawn to Lexi Mills. I look forward to Proximity (Lexi Mills Book 2), in fact it's my next read! “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Some books you just wish you could give more then 5 stars and this one of them! ATF Lex Mills lost her partner during a raid, but not only that, she also lost her leg. She fights her way back and promises to revenge her partner. Uncovering a terrorist plot has her racing to keep people save, and gives her a chance to finish what she started when her leg was lost. Excellent read! Perfect addition to your thriller mystery TBR pile.
Lexi always had to defy society to be accepted and to be part of a group. She now defuses bombs and joins other law enforcement units throughout the country. She lost her leg and her partner in a mission and is seeking for revenge. Fuze has an interesting plot, is fast-paced, and is well-written. The ending was totally unexpected, so I'm looking forward to learning what will happen next! I thank the authors and their publisher for the ARC and apologize for the late review.
An ATF bomb squad, Lexi Mills, is injured in an explosion and loses one leg. Her partner is killed in the blast. She is fitted with a prosthetic leg and after rehab is back at work. Lexi is determined to find the person responsible. A planned attack on the governor of Texas gets Lexi on the job to help. She gets captured along with the governor. A thrilling conclusion that keeps you reading.
The first in a new series, this story kept me engaged and wanting more. Packed with drama, Lexi's story began with a sad incident and ended with suspense and a twist. While some parts of the case were solved, there's still aspects that are not, and I look forward to seeing how it all unfolds going forward. A solid start to the series!
Second half of the book is a real page turner. Will keep you on the edge of your seat. Or bed. I stayed up an extra 2 hours to finish it Some scary stuff given what is going on in the world. Not scary because of how it’s written, scary because it is completely plausible.
I've read several books by Brian. All very entertaining since my background is law enforcement. This was a huge departure for him. I don't need to read about the main character's lesbian sexual thoughts and activity. That is disgusting. DEI is no longer fashionable Mr. Shea. I put it down after a few chapters. Very disappointed.
If you like intense, powerful stories filled with non-stop action and outstanding characters look no further than this superbly written novel by a man who knows his craft extremely well. Very Highly Recommended.
Brian Shea has demonstrated why he is considered a master of gritty mystery. This complex novel with a multi-faceted main character has many legs for future installments. My advice - get in in the beginning. Great book and new series
Lexi is an ATF Bomb Expert, who unfortunately had a terrible injury. During her rehab, she falls in love. She tries very hard to find out who is responsible. There’s danger , suspense and more to keep everybody wanting more of these stories. Outstanding as always.
