It has been quite some time since Smith’s quarry has eluded him so fully. A woman was murdered in his home, he’s removed his family to Jack and Vi’s house, he’s pulled in all his friends to help, and he still can not find the engineer of his friend’s death.
Only, the noose has been tightening. The traps have been laid, and now Smith will have to win against one of the cleverest villains he’s had to track down. All while ensuring he doesn’t lose anyone else. Join Smith on his most fraught journey yet and discover the person who has thwarted him thus far.
I love this series. Smith is a complicated man with a past few people know. He is clever and secretive. The one person he lets into his life and secrets is Bea, his wife. Together they solve some difficult cases. This latest one is extremely brutal. Every time a clue appears it seems to be layered in danger towards Smith and Bea. Can Smith unravel this mystery and keep Bea and their baby safe. Working with their close friends, they finally solve this very difficult puzzle. I love this cast of characters. They are never boring and the glimpse into a past lifestyle is fun to imagine.
This is the last book in the series of tales about the bad man the awesome dangerous Smith couldn’t catch. Beatrice is reaching the end of her pregnancy. She and Vi have been side lined. But the stress of the pregnancy and the danger of the killer on the loose is making everyone crazy. Kate delivered and Rita and Lila go into labor at the same time. Vi takes Rita and the Smiths take Lila, but awful and dangerous incidents keep happening. Finally Bea can’t keep herself from going over the list of people involved in the firm being investigated. I had assumed this was another brush from Smith’s past, but it really was about the current case. Her actions brake things loose and, as all their friends tell Smith, he has taught her enough that she is capable of saving herself and her baby. It is an awesome ride and Beatrice truly proves she is as remarkable as Smith.
Smith and Beatrice and the group finally solve the mystery that has been investigated over 3 books. Very scary, fast paced, and emotional last half with Bea at the center of the action. Full experience of the situation only if the reader has read preceding g Smith investigation and the latest entry in the Violet Victor series. They are all entertained. This is a great story but much darker than the usual from Beth Byers. I hope the next ones return to a more light hearted investigation, although murder always occurs
The author m7sg looove pronouns. Why use a name so the reader know who's speaking when a pronouns can be used instead doing confusion on who is speaking to whom.
The Inspector entered the room and saw him sitting there. He looked around noting they were alone.
Who looked? The sitting man it turns out. Poor writing. This occurred through the book. I'd expect the writer would have acquired some craft by now.
While I love all of Beth Byers work, the Smith Investigates books have become my favorites. Death’s Approach is a solid story and an excellent character development. Bea comes into her own as a strong independent woman and an equal to any of the members of her circle….including Smith! Will not give away any of the plot just state that this book is well worth your time. ENJOY!
As always, Ms. Byers delivers with the Smiths. I enjoy the emotions felt by the characters that are realistic and contribute to this particular thriller. A dash of humor helps too.
However, I cannot give this five stars due to numerous typos and errors in grammar and syntax.
I would recommend this novel as she is one of the best cozy writers I have read.
Story for me is a 5 star but it definitely needs editing. I liked the humor, banter, and sarcasm and sassy attitude.l thought the plot was good clues were kind of sneaky. I am so happy the author did not over dramatize and drag out the actions of the criminals.
Love the interaction of all the characters! How resourceful Bea was. How the characters always love and support each other and you get to read a good mystery. Recommend your books to all who enjoy a great read😍
Beth Byers is such a good storyteller. Her characters are completely developed and relatable. I love all her stories. Beth, thank you for these special stories about Smith and Bea.
Thank you for listening when I said that Beatrice was the more interesting character than Smith! And thank you very much for proving just how truly remarkable a character Beatrice is in ways I can't go in to without spoiling the story. Love these books!
It has been a lovely and exciting time with Bea and Smith. I hope they settle down to a delightfully calmer life. 🎉 Congratulations on solving the toughest case with the strength of family and friends assisting you. Cheers
These seem to be getting shorter. Good story line but the rehashing of previous books in a short “book” seems a bit of a gyp. Really enjoy the The Smith Investigates series.
The mystery continues. Beatrice is kidnapped…… escapes….. has her baby. All the regular players are involved plus Scotland Yard. Even the Earl is using his position to guarantee assistance at the highest level. Very satisfying ….
This particular edition of the series had some intensely thrilling twists & turns, and quite a harrowing evolution that involves the reader not only as a riveted spectator, but also with a good deal of emotional complexities.
Talk about a mama bear, Bea is fierce! Smith is up against a criminal who always seems to be one step ahead. Bea and his impending child's lives are at stake! ALL hands on deck...
Good plotting. Improved edits. Still typos, but Beatrice growing into herself, and still a house mystery lurking. Next, please ma’am. Could I have some more?
I really love this series, far more than the Violet series. Smith and Beatrice are such complex characters, and I wish we got more of them in this series and less of the supporting characters.
