After reuniting under the most unexpected circumstances, Thalia, Hazel, and Arael strike up a deal that results in all three returning to Eos. Hazel wants to remain in Fantasy and use their newfound abilities to help, but Arael has already promised to return them home safely. Thalia, defending Hazel's right to stay and desperate to cling to her chance to end the Nightmare Crisis for good, stands her ground and begins to train Hazel despite Arael's protest. However, the dispute digs up old wounds, and things end up more strained than ever before. All the while, Hazel is discovering long-buried secrets surrounding their mysterious pendant... and who it belonged to long before it was theirs.
I'm giving it four stars instead of just three (like the last one) because I was actually surprised by how much I liked it. This was much better than the first book. I found myself a lot more interested in how the plot would progress and wanting to read one more chapter, which wasn't really the case with the first one - I had to drag myself to continue reading it each time.
The reason I was probably disappointed with the first book was that I expected a fantasy adventure with a romance side plot, but this series is ALL romance and little fantasy adventure. Even in part two, it often felt like they were not making enough progress with the mystery on their hands because they were too busy yearning and arguing. For the most part, the romance drama was interesting to follow along though. The slowburn was really nice and the fact that the kiss happened exactly on page 500 felt really satisfying. Speaking of satisfying, Jay getting punched in the face and basically exiled from Eos? Hell fucking yes. Also enjoyed reading about Arael getting beat up, as cruel as it sounds. Not like I don't like him, I love him! But it's nice seeing your favourite characters get hurt sometimes. Especially when they wake up to a pretty lady taking care of them after she finally realised what they mean to her.
That was just one of the scenes where I couldn't put the book down. The visit to the willow that one night, where the two of them talked about their struggles and pressure and how much they love each other, that was really sweet. Or any scene with Hyacinth or The Pull. Or the one in the beginning, when Hazel found out about Jay and Harmony's affair. Speaking of her, I really expected her to be an even bigger villain than you'd expect at first, but her redemption arc is nice too I guess. It feels a little rushed, how sorry she is now all of a sudden after going along with this for so long, but on the other hand I really want Thalia to have her as a real friend again. Thalia deserves all the friends. And during the scene when Arael found out about their secret I literally ran to instagram to find that one post where he is seen eavesdropping on a conversation and having some sort of realisation, because for SO LONG I have been wondering what he found out and I was so excited to have finally arrived at this scene.
Now, something I didn't like so much. Something that even really bothered me sometimes. So many times, when Arael and Thalia were fighting, or even had love confessions, for some reason, Thalia's whole family was watching. Those moments could have been so dramatic and emotional but whenever I remembered all her aunts and cousins and everybody heard every word they said, I just cringed. Most of the time it didn't even have a significant impact on the scene either! It was just second-hand embarrassment. But I am glad they had moments for themselves, like after Arael woke up or when they finally kissed (even though Hazel interrupted them, but oh well. I'm honestly glad it was just them, I half-expected Thalia's parents to show up in that moment). Also, on the topic of romance, it felt kinda over the top how seemingly (almost) every character had to end up with a love interest, and they also happened really fast (too fast) sometimes. Like, okay, Arael and Thalia? 10/10, we've all been waiting for it, great delivery and overall very intriguing. Hazel and Esme, yeah that was sweet, they fell for each other pretty fast but they did still take some time until they made things official. Clover and Nanami, though, I couldn't really see. She literally fell in love the second she saw him - which, okay, I guess it's fair because he's got those attractive Fae genes - and a few days later (at least I think he stayed for a couple of days) they were already kissing. Or maybe I'm simply too arospec to relate to this. I probably wouldn't mind these things so much if there wasn't the constant teasing by family members, it's like with the scenes with the whole family watching, the characters get embarrassed so often that I get embarrassed for them too.
Moving on again to things I liked about this book! In my review of the first one I mentioned how I didn't like that Thalia and Arael's story was told right off the bat in the very first chapter (or prologue or whatever). I said it would have been better to sprinkle bits of their backstory throughout the book, and this is exactly what this book did! More about their teen days was revealed in little pieces, and I enjoyed that a lot more than a block of information. That's how I would have liked it in the first book too! Also, I'm glad it went deeper into the reason for their breakup, because I remember reading it and thinking the whole situation was incredibly stupid. But Arael talked about how his worst fear back then was being wrong because of his destructive perfectionalism, and we saw that he gave up so quickly on their relationship because he thought it was for the better, since they couldn't be together in the long run anyway. It made me sooo happy that this was explored a bit more.
And then. The end. Oh man. I'm really excited to see where this will go, I think I am FINALLY getting the fantasy adventure I waited for, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it will all play out in the third book! I have high hopes!

From page 100 onwards I knew the only rating I could give TPOH was 5/5. The characters are full of life and love, and when they feel, I feel with them. It's incredible and fascinating the way Quinn works her words to pull such a strong response out of her readers. The plots and sub-plots were well thought out and expressed, leaving no moment dull or unfocused, and the tension just rose and rose in the most perfect way. Needless to say I'm deaparate for book 3.
The writing is absolutely beautiful but not in the way you traditionally see this said. Yes, there were some stunners of metaphors or speeches that felt like pure poetry and swept me off my feet, but at the end of the day, TPOH is not Shakespeare. It isn't a 'literary masterpiece' in the way people often demand books to be. It's so much more, and in my opinion, so much better than that. It's funny, it's raw, it's skittish, it's bold. It's alive. Quinn has an unapologetic charm to her writing. It makes me FEEL. It reminds me why I love reading and writing. It makes me believe in love. That's something I see so rarely in books nowadays and it makes me incredibly happy to see a sense of humour on page, and to feel the passion and joy that writing and building this story and these characters gives the author.
The release of book 3 literally can't come fast enough for me!!! I'm on the edge of my seat! 5/5 💚🧡💜
This improvement was beautiful! The writing became so smooth and flowy, compared to the first book, which for me, as a non-native speaker, was a bless to read. The relationships between the characters and how they work was way more enjoyable and it made me root for them so much, that some twists made me scream aloud... From my experience, the parts about the complicated feelings of Thalia and Arael were written very beautifully. Hazel's struggles were really relatable and I understood their reactions as the story went on. Personally, I really recommend this book and I can't wait for the third one this year!
I met the trio via Riley's gorgeous drawings in Instagram, and I can't say I regret getting to know them better.
The improvement in style of writing between the two books is just insane. The characters are much better developed and the dialogues flow so well! The plot kept me hooked every few minutes I could spare to read, I can't wait for the third part!
(Please don't hurt the babies too much, I need to see them happy)
I really enjoyed this book. The first one was okay and I was a little unsure going into this one, but you can tell the major growth the author has as a writer in between the books. The characters and their relationships are definitely a lot stronger, and the perspective change feels very appropriate and doesn’t feel like whiplash. Besides that, the world is filled out a lot better, I think focusing on Eos in this book is really to its advantage.
It was also just very cute. Hazel and Esme are adorable, watching Thalia and Areal tiptoe around each other and their past is fun. And when it’s time for the story to be heart wrenching, it absolutely does it.
Overall, I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would, and a lot more than the prior one, it was worth the read. After the ending, I am incredibly excited for the next installment next year!!!
This book was a fun read. I love the characters in this series as well, Esme and Hazel were a great addition of cuteness. Thalia and Arael, oh what can I say about them? I loved their relationship in this book, and I SCREAMED at every interaction of theirs. The exploration of the magic in this book was much more in dept than the last book, and I enjoyed it thoroughly, but I also felt like too much of it, as well as the action scenes, happened off-page or not at all, in favour of character development. Also I want Harmony's hand in marriage. I'm looking forward to read the final book!
I read this as soon as I could get my hands on it, and I LOVED it. (In my opinion it’s even better than the first one0 it was an amazing read with lots of action, romance, tension, kinship, and rivalry. It was beautifully done and I can’t wait to read the third installment!!
Okay so, as promised, here’s my full review of this book :)
Prefacing this by saying that I rated book one 3 stars (see my review on its page for my reasons for that)— however, I decided to pick book 2 up anyway because I absolutely love the author’s art/characters and really wanted to see her writing improvement…
And holy crap I was not disappointed!! The improvement between this book and book one is phenomenal. This book, esp the scenes with Harmony (my favourite character 👉👈🥰) had me on the edge of my seat.
I didn’t really go into this book shipping Thalia and Arael, but their gradual return to enjoying eachother’s company and being comfortable in eachother’s presence was so well pulled off that I am definitely Team Thalael now :))
I really enjoyed reading about the Pull and Hyacinth; the pull seems like a very compelling “villain” so far and Hyacinth seems to be quite a complex character.
My only gripe with this book is that I never felt connected at all to Hazel, but I think that’s just because I am a different age group than them, and so it’s not a huge issue and obviously won’t effect how I rate this book.
Thalia’s family and their little interactions were so cute as well <3.
I’m hoping to see more of Harmony in book 3, since she’s a major part of why I enjoyed this book so much. It’s nice to see a character who makes bad and hurtful choices not be immediately forgiven, but I really hope we see her get a happy ending (since it’s obvious she’s not a bad person) and I hope she can take steps to further repair her relationship with Thalia.

First I wanna say this is the sequel to The Pendant of Hyacinth: Awakened. So read that first, and the third part is coming winter 2023(just so yk) Then, omg I loved this so much. The writing, the world building and most of all the characters. I loved the characters and I will love them forever. If you plan on reading this please do, also know there’s an instagram (@thependantofhyacinth) where you can find the authors art(yes she’s also an artist) of the characters. I hope y’all enjoy as much as I did<3 _____________________________________________________________REREADDDDDD still loved it as much as before
