After solving a decades-old cold case murder, Izzy Brown learns no good deed goes unpunished. Arrested, expelled, and back in the sad Florida trailer park where she’s spent most of her life, Izzy’s world has spiraled out of control. But then, the opportunity of a lifetime…

Izzy accepts an invitation to move to England with her best friend, Elton Jones-Davies, and live with his mother in her flat in Graves upon Bones, London’s poshest neighborhood. At her exclusive new private school, Izzy begins seeing a therapist for her anxiety, and life is good—for a minute.

But then Izzy and Elton open an investigation into the unsolved bombing of a local pub and soon uncover illicit affairs, ties to organized crime, and even terrorist plots. Desperate not to squander her second chance, Izzy promised her mother she’d not go looking for trouble. But trouble has found her, and now Izzy must decide whether to press on in her search for the killer, knowing it could cost her everything.

Set in 2009 during the Great Recession and the first wave of the opioid epidemic, Graves upon Bones is the second book in the Izzy and Elton Mystery Series.

"I'll do my own personal project, but I need your help investigating. We're a team, remember? We solved a twenty-five-year-old cold case."
"Yes, and as I recall, your unceremonious expulsion from Bardo Academy soon followed."

This book is the second book in the Izzy and Elton Mystery Series and while I have not read book one (I was not aware this was part of a series when I began reading it) I feel this book could be read as a standalone. The story was easy to follow and well written.

Izzy and Elton are teens and in GuB we are taken through another of their mystery solving adventures. Elton and Izzy are both relatable in many ways. Izzy has dealt with drug addiction, which I wasn't fond of but I do understand that it is a big problem in our world. Her drug problem stemmed from taking Oxycontin to help her anxiety and headaches.. the trouble came from not having a prescription for it. Elton is autistic and I loved that Gibbs included an autistic character to show a different side than we are normally shown. Elton's urge to keep Izzy out of trouble reminded me of a big brother/little sister relationship.

The story line/genre is not something I would generally pick up but the cover and synopsis had me intrigued. While the prologue grabbed my attention the rest of the book wasn't on the same level as what I normally read. But that is understandable since this is a YA book.

Even though the level of action/thriller aspect wasn't what I normally read, I did enjoy the book. The ending is not what I was thinking, so that was nice! I love when I don't see endings coming. I'll let y'all read it though, to see what happened.

I want to read the first book of this series, as well.

When Chad Alan Gibbs and his publisher were kind enough to share an ARC of this sequel with me, I jumped on the opportunity to immerse myself back in the world of Izzy and Elton. This time around, the story is moved to London where Izzy and Elton attending a prestigious private school. For her school project, Izzy is immediately on the trail of a brand-new mystery. As soon as she hears about the unsolved bombing of The Red Lion in 1989, she is determined to bring the perpetrator to justice, riding high after solving the case in the first novel. Feeling invincible, she starts down a dangerous path, much to Elton's chagrin, which involves mobsters, the IRA, football hooliganism and a huge dose of family scandal...

Gibbs perfectly established the friendship and dynamic between Izzy and Elton in book one, allowing him to build a new world for them in London with a huge array of dastardly characters the reader loves to hate. Whatever tension is introduced for the pair, we are convinced they are platonic soulmates - I loved following their friendship once again. Additionally, the way that Gibbs inserts Graves Upon Bones, Graves United and Lenox Park into the world of London was so convincing that I had a good few minutes of frustrated googling and studying a tube map before I realised most elements, whilst based in truth, are actually fictional!

I commented in my last review that Izzy is the new Pip FItz-Amobi or Stevie Bell. I want to withdraw that comment now as in this second novel, Gibbs is establishing more and more what makes his series unique. Izzy is confident, determined, but flawed which makes her interesting and frustrating to follow in equal measure. The prophetic narration I loved in the first novel is still there, the foreshadowing and hints making me absolutely desperate for novel three - please write quickly :) An easy five stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher who provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoy Chad Alan Gibbs’ books and have read them all. I loved the junior detective element in Bardo by the Sea and was excited to see more from Izzie and Elton.

Izzie is so relatable because she suffers from anxiety. Unfortunately, she also tends to self-destruct, so if you’re looking for character growth, you won’t find that because Izzie is not a girl who learns from her mistakes. Now, she’s landed in the middle of another investigation, one that is supremely dangerous. With Elton busy with other interests, she’s going it alone most of the time. Without a second head to sort things out, she’s accusing many innocent people.

Her friendship with Elton is fairly one-sided. It’s always about what Elton can do for Izzy, which, let’s face it, is a lot, and less about what she can do for Elton. His family has given her a second opportunity of a lifetime in England, and she’s still making everything about her.

I’m not one to compare one book to another, but Bardo by the Sea was fast-paced and exciting, and this one took me over a week to finish, which is a really slow pace for me. The writing found its groove at the halfway mark, and the pace picked up.

Will I still buy the next book and the one after that? Absolutely! I know there will be some character growth; there has to be. Elton is too centering a presence in Izzie’s life, and there have been too many disasters for her that some things need to go right. Though not everything, if the way she describes things that *will be happening down the road* is any indication. And that’s okay! Izzie wouldn’t be human if her character did a complete 180.

I enjoy that, in her bumbling way, she eventually gets things done. That is part of her charm. I love Elton as a character and how hard his mother has tried to be there for Izzie. There is much in store for this duo, and I look forward to seeing what case lands in their laps down the road.

When I started this book, I didn't realize it was the second book in a series, and although this can be read as a standalone within the first few pages, I knew I wanted to read the first book.

Izzy and Elton are on their way to London. They are best friends and after the events of the last book, Izzy will be staying with Elton and his mother in Graves Upon Bones for the upcoming school season.
When Izzy passes by a pub with a plaque memorializing someone who died in the Red Lion bombing, a crime that was never solved, she knows that this will try and solve it.

This gets Izzy into a lot of trouble, as she travels all over to question people that knew the dead man trying to figure out who would want him dead. Sometimes her friend Elton is by her side, but he has made a new friend and spends a lot of time with her. Usually, he is the voice of reason when Izzy is doing dangerous things and I think Izzy gets a bit out of control with accusing powerful people of murder.

There are quite a few twists and turns and while I had a singular suspect in mind for most of the book, I was completely surprised by who the killer ended up being and how everything ended up playing out. I can't wait to go back and read the first book, and hopefully, there will be more books in the series and see what kind of trouble Izzy will get into next!

Izzy and Elton are back in book 2 of this great series, and I was so happy to read a pre-publication copy! After solving a decades old mystery and stirring up a whole lot of trouble in Florida in the first book in the series, Izzy accepts an invitation from Elton’s mom to join them in London. Enrolled in a posh private school and living in an upscale neighborhood, Izzy finds yet another unsolved crime to tackle. Who is responsible for the bombing of a London pub that occurred in the 60’s killing a local pub owner and rabid, local football club fan? Izzy is off and running.

With a reluctant Elton at her side, who has hilariously met his match in a girlfriend, Izzy manages to rattle some cages, causing trouble wherever she goes. From mobsters to former IRA members, Izzy dodges danger as she pursues the mystery.
Once more, reader is in for a fun ride. The descriptions of London, tube rides and all, are spot on. I recently returned from a London vacation and found the locations here perfectly described. Plus Izzy and Elton are always entertaining. Half the fun for me is the interaction between these characters, and Gibbs does a masterful job with the dialogue. These two unlikely protagonists are among my favorite characters.
I would highly recommend this book, and now just have to sit back and wait for the next book in the series.

Chad Alan Gibbs has quickly become one of my favourite authors (even though it took me weeks to finish reading this ARC, sorry Gibbs!). I used to compare Gibbs to Jerry Spinelli and although they still have many similarities, Gibbs has definitely established a name and style of his own. His ability to churn out such brilliance is one of a kind.

Though I don't know the particulars of professional football/soccer, based on Gibbs' impeccable attention to detail, I trust his fictional tale is relatively accurate in that regard. That being said, he writes in a way that would make the story easy to follow for someone that hasn't got a clue about professional European Football.

Although some may disagree, I think I'd categorize this series as a murder mystery (my new favourite murder mystery series). It's got more of an escape room vibe rather than a horror vibe, but is thrilling nonetheless. I'm also glad I took the time to savour this read because I was left thinking about the characters and the story and what would happen next and of course who the bomber was.

Looking forward to your next book Gibbs! Thank you for this ARC. Y'all need to go read this, I know I've already recommended it to some of you, but now I'm recommending it to all of you.

Thanks to Netgalley and the author/publisher for the ARC. I really love this author's writing style, and I have become hooked on this duo. Book one of the series was fresh and interesting and kept me guessing. I also could not help but love Elton and even Izzy (who makes you cringe with the decisions she makes). The only downsides to this one were it seemed a bit more unrealistic than book 1, and I was not loving how Elton was kind of taken in a different direction in this book. I wanted to see him here as much as I had seen him in book 1, and he was not as involved until more toward the end. You still get the quirky humor and brash words and moves by Izzy, and Elton is still there being Elton and spouting random facts. The other characters are well-developed and woven in well, and I enjoyed the London background. I am definitely interested in book 3 and where it takes the duo and what mystery they will attack next. FYI profanity and violence and talk of sexual situations (mostly in a humorous way)

Izzy and Elton are back! Izzy accepts an invitation from Elton's mom to move to England and attend an exclusive new private school. Right from the start, the book grabs you and keeps you involved in the story and what is happening with Izzy and Elton, who investigate an unsolved local pub bombing. I like the dynamics between Izzy and Elton; they are great characters.

Graves upon Bones is a solid story, a good mystery, with well-developed characters. It is a well-written book and one I would recommend. I encourage anyone to read the first book in this series to get to know the characters and understand their dynamics.

FYI: Graves upon Bones was set in 2009.

This is a great series by Chad Alan, I love his books and I was looking forward to this second book of the series.
Izzy and Elton really hold a place in my heart, their friendship reminds me of the childhood xrdships I hold close to my heart.both characters are well return and it makes the reader love them both.. After solving a decades old mystery and stirring up a whole lot of trouble in Florida in the first book in the series, Izzy accepts an invitation from Elton’s mom to join them in London. through out the book you are taken through events in a very realistic manner that makes this book more relatable. I love chad's humour and the references about births culture.

When this book popped up on NetGalley I couldn't wait to read it! After loving the first adventure of Izzy and Elton in Bardo By The Sea, I couldn't wait to hear what they had been up to in London and oh my did it not disappoint!

Izzy and Elton as both such interesting characters and are well developed exploring their relationship with each other and others within the story. Izzy's detective work to figure out who did it was a glorious journey of grasping at straws, exaggerating and meddling to get the truth but by god she did it and I was completely in the dark until just before it was revealed.

I honestly cannot wait for the next book in this series and the final lines had me excited for what is to come!

I cannot say enough good things about the recent book from Chad Gibbs entitled "Graves Upon Bones". I have come to realize from reading Chad's earlier books that I do not need to start them unless I have a lot of time to devote to reading, because I can never put the book down when I get started! He has a masterful knack of offering a plot twist at the conclusion of most chapters, where I just have to keep reading. I am already looking forward to the next installment in the Izzy and Elton Mystery Series coming out this Spring! If you love mysteries and page turners, check out this book as well as the entire mystery series.

Received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange of an honest review.

In a follow up to Bardo By the Sea, Izzy and Elton find themselves living abroad in London’s poshest neighborhood Graves upon Bones. Izzy of course finds another murder to solve, embroiling herself and Elton in various forms of danger while seeking the truth.

I adore Izzy and Elton’s friendship and I was so happy to be back in their little world. I didn’t find the killer to be particularly shocking, but I enjoyed the process of getting there regardless. If there’s a third story in this series, I will certainly read it.

Love the Izzy & Elton characters, fun & quick moving plot that reads like a movie script full of classic Chad Gibbs humor and cultural references for a Brit illiterate person like me.

Reminds me of the Rome of Fall, but less sinister.

Looking forward to Ashes in the Pines!

This book serves as a good sequel to Bardo by the Sea and takes us further into the Izzyverse. I like how each book brings with it a new venue for the story to play out. Much like the first book in the series, this book is written in a way that really takes you to the environment. I felt certain throughout the book that I knew how it's going to end but ended up having each of my theories systematically destroyed as it unfolded, which I really rather enjoyed.

The story is really enjoyable and I particularly love how real historic events and societal climates are tied into the story. Chad Alan Gibbs does a great job in this series of showing the modern day repercussions of events and decisions from the past.

The second instalment of the Izzy and Elton mysteries follows on from where the last left off, but this time they are in a fictional neighbourhood of London, rather than a fictional Floridan luxe-community.

It was an enjoyable story of a teen-detective, with an interesting take on gentrification, corruption and political terrorism. The twists all made sense and were well set up.

There are a couple of inaccuracies / inconsistencies / complete mis-conceptions/ clangers in the speech written as accents, the description of London and names of the fictional part of the city that really rubbed me up the wrong way. This is a delayed ARC review, so perhaps they were corrected, but I just feel that closer attention could have been paid because they were annoying enough to jerk me out of the story. And calling the posh private school St. Beckham's... That's a nope from me - sorry and thank you.

This was a quick, YA mystery to read. It follows Izzy and Elton as they move to England and find a new long-unsolved mystery to solve. I thought it flowed a lot better than the first book in the series. There were fewer plot holes or loose threads, the twists made more sense, and the characters were fleshed out better. If you enjoy the teenage detectives, you may enjoy this one.

Thank you to NetGalley and Borne Back Books for the opportunity to review this book ahead of publication. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

Graved upon Bones by Chad Alan Gibbs - 4/5

Myster & Thrillers - Teens & YA
Graves upon Bones is the second YA mystery that features Izzy and Elton. Despite them starting over in a new school and area they cannot abandon the need to keep solving mysteries. I love the characters and how strong they are all throughout the story. I look forward to the third installment to see what other mysteries Izzy and Elton find themselves solving.

Thank you NetGalley for the eARC.

This was a DNF for me at 50% of the way through it. It was about terrorism and I didn’t want to finish it. It was politically-oriented and I did not find that interesting. It was a good book for someone who likes to read about political terrorism. They would likely really enjoy it. There was a young woman who was a super sleuth and she was enjoyable. The setting was in London.
