Caleb and Flora Johnson are in the hills north of Bear Creek looking for herbs for Flora’s garden. They encounter a group of settlers who have wandered onto sacred Shoshone land. While they try to figure out how to keep the green horns out of danger, Caleb is wrestling with a promise he made to Bear Creek’s sheriff, Ned Walker, to find and arrest a man wanted for murder in another town who is thought to have fled to the area to which they’re traveling.
He hasn’t told Flora of the promise and he finds himself in a bit of a dilemma when it turns out the wanted man, Jeremiah Hawkins, is indeed in the area.
