Lauren St John grew up on a farm and game reserve in Africa, the inspiration for her acclaimed memoir, Rainbow's End, and her award-winning White Giraffe series for children. Dead Man's Cove, the first in her Laura Marlin mystery series, won the Blue Peter Book of the Year Award in 2011. Her bestselling One Dollar Horse trilogy for teenagers was followed by The Glory, a breathtaking YA adventure and romance about a long distance horse race across the American West. Formerly a sports and music journalist, Lauren is the author of Seve and Hardcore Troubador: the Life & Near Death of Steve Earle, a superb, gripping biography of an Americana legend. The Obituary Writer, her first adult novel, was published in 2014 and she is currently at work on her second. Both The White Giraffe and The Glory have been optioned for film.
Twelve-year-old Kat Wolfe and her beloved mum were headed to the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, to the small village of Bluebell Bay where Dr Wolfe would begin her dream job in the veterinary clinic. The small cottage beside the clinic was part of the deal, along with Tiny, the not-so-small Savannah that Kat was determined to tame. When Kat started a pet sitting agency with the thought of buying herself a laptop, she had no idea her adventures were just starting.
With Charming Outlaw, the ex-racehorse as one of Kat’s clients, she was soon firm friends with the owner, Harper Lamb. Between the two of them they uncovered a perplexing mystery, a military army base, and were helped by Bailey, an Amazon parrot. And of course, Tiny – plus Toby, Edith’s retriever that Kat walked daily. Bluebell Bay was supposed to be a pleasant, tranquil place, but there were deadly secrets everywhere. What would be the outcome for both Kat and Harper?
What a delightful, fun adventure mystery for youngsters Kat Wolfe Investigates turned out to be. First in the Wolfe and Lamb Mysteries by Lauren St John, I thoroughly enjoyed it and am already looking forward to book 2. Set for children/teens from twelve and up, and of course people much older (as I am), I have no problem recommending Kat Wolfe Investigates highly.
With thanks to Pan Macmillan AU for my copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
When you Wolfe down a Lauren St John novel, it basically makes you want to immediately read another Lauren St John novel. Great mystery adventure in the vein of the author's (and my own) beloved childhood classics but with a modern twist. Fall in love with the pet-whispering and hot-headed Kat, coding Harper, an o ld but still on the ball librarian and a nice inclusive wing characters alongside twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end!
What a great book! I have a new favourite investigator in Kat Wolfe and will definitely be adding this to our library. It has something for everyone - animals, humour, sinister bad guys, a fast-paced plot - and Kat and her mum are such warm characters. I really like the pacing, too - it starts out as a fairly simple story, but sucks you in and before you know it you've got multiple mysteries on your hands. There's a great cast of supporting characters and animals, all of whom are well-realised, not just cardboard props. The vocab level is challenging without being overwhelming, and overall I think this would grab everyone from confident Y3s right up to Y6.
This is the first in a new series by an author I've known about for a long time but have somehow never got around to reading. I'm thrilled to have finally read one of her books, and am ashamed I never picked them up before as they are totally and utterly my thing. Child-me would have adored them. Animals, beautiful seaside places, adventure, libraries, friendship, spies and danger? Yes, please!
Kat Wolfe Investigates begins in London, where Kat lives with her mother, on the night their home gets broken into by a teenaged burglar. Kat's mother takes this as a sign that enough's enough and moves them down to Bluebell Bay, a fictional town on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset. There, while Kats mother gets herself settled into the town's veternary clinic, Kat starts a pet-sitting agency, makes new friends, has to earn the love of the half-wild savannah cat that comes with their new house. When one of her clients (the owner of a very vocal parrot with a love of action films) mysteriously disappears, it's up to Kat and her new friend Harper to investigate.
This was a delightful read right from the start, full of character and excitement. Kat is brilliant. She's passionate and brave, curious and imaginative, with a quirky humour to her voice. Her love of her new home was wonderful to read, as in so many stories that feature a character moving house, the characters have to learn to love their new home. Kat's enthusiasm to explore and make friends and get involved within the community right from the start was so refreshing and made her even more endearing to me. Harper, Kat's accident-prone hacker best friend was also so much fun to read. I loved her sharp, direct humour in contrast with Kat's. The dialogue in this story is pacy and fun, at times so reminiscent of the kids I know and parent-child conversations. What stopped this being a five-star book for me was that tthe villains were less convicincing and often seemed too cartoonish for me to take seriously, especially whenever they were speaking. It was easy enough to take it as part of the fun, but was nonetheless jarring when contrasted with the quality of the other characters' dialogue.
You can instantly tell Lauren St. John is a confident and well-experienced writer, though, with strong narrative voice and a love of animals and mysteries and adventure that sparks across every page. I loved learning that certain elements of the plot were based on a real spy story, and how she weaved in so many references to real events and culture throughout the book. I also enjoyed learning about the animals, and how real their behaviours felt throughout. The story's well-paced and suspenseful, the characters vibrant and diverse. It's a satisfying beginning to an adventurous new series, and it's made me excited to hunt down all her other books!

This book is a gem! I loved the complicated mystery, and the animals in the story were for sure memorable. If you like mysteries, this is the book for you!
Such a blast reading this fast paced and super cool adventure, loved the characters and the animals. And this is a book that can make a young person interested in reading!
Tiere?
I really enjoyed this book. I loved how it was mainly based on animals, and I also liked the Jurassic Coast Setting. It was a little bit confusing at some points, but other than that, I loved it. I thought that Kat was amazing with animals, and I loved all of the animals she trained and looked after. I couldn’t believe, however, that one of the many pet owners (Edith) who had hired Kat, owned her very own… built in library! I want one of those! I would recommend this book for anyone who is over the age of 8 and loves animals!
Intrigue and tension abound in this fast-paced, high-octane mystery that delivers plenty of twists and turns. Kat’s a wonderful heroine, one you instantly like and connect with. Lots of animal antics and great humour - a thoroughly joyous read.
No i może jeszcze pułkownik Cunningham- szorstki wielbiciel dalii, mający złe doświadczenia z grillem.
This book is a brilliant mix of fun, mystery and animal antics. Right from the start, Kat’s the kind of heroine you can really like. She loves animals, is smart but can be a bit clumsy, and is best friends with her mum. She’s also brave – not in a kick-butt, powerful adventurer way, no, she’s just a normal girl trying to face down her fears and do what’s best for all involved. The burglar scene was a perfect illustration and I knew from the first chapter that Kat was a girl I’d love to be friends with.
Whether it's a movie-quoting parrot, a half-wild cat, a podgy retriever or a frisky horse, there are also animals galore in this book, and I loved how Kat tackled each problem differently. I also liked the new friends she makes – bored, broken-legged hacker Harper and lovely but lonely ex-librarian Edith, not to mention various other interesting characters around the town.
Including the man who goes missing. The mystery is great, slowly gathering menace and clues as the story progresses. Sometimes it seems obvious who did it and why, but then new evidence pops up to keep you guessing right to the end. Things are far from what they seem, and Kat and her friends have their work cut out not only to solve the crime but to get others to believe they’re telling the truth.
In all, this was a great first adventure for Kat and co. It’s fun and full of animals, but it also has a smart mystery to keep things interesting. So if you love – or know of any young readers who do – animals, mysteries and entertaining tales, then this may just be the book for you. I can’t wait to see what Wolfe and Lamb get up to next.
Rightttt, so… around page 70 I had almost returned the book to the library but was bored so decided to keep reading for a bit longer after a couple of days. It got more interesting then. As much since then the story got interesting and very intriguing, especially for a children’s book, and it was a pleasure to fly through, some aspects left me questioning them.
1. (In my opinion) This book was way too scary for 9 year olds (the age rating is 9+). I would not give a book that talks quite a lot for this genre about murder, abduction or weapons, to a kid this age. I think it should be rated at least 12+.
2. The relationship between Kat, the main character, and her mum. Even though for some it might sound like such a perfect mother-daughter best friend relationship, if you pay attention it seemed a bit toxic (specifically at the beginning as then with the plot going on, the mum basically moved to a tertiary character). A girl aged 12, should not have to stop herself from sharing something about her day, or a reflection she’d had about moving homes, or whatever of this kind, because that could interfere with her mum’s peace, after she’d finally felt so happy. Like, it’s not the girls responsibility to keep her mum happy in this sense. It seemed like Kat had a bit of a saviour complex (a psychological construct) which is a toxic thing and should not be promoted, especially talking about a 12 year old to their mother.
All in all, I did enjoy the book, as the story was captivating, full of intrigue and well-paced action, and I like some of the characters. Nonetheless, it has some aspects that made me leave such rating.
This one's a 3.5 for me. The first in a series featuring smart girls interested in taking action and making a difference in the world, this book combines a mysterious in a small village with espionage and double-crossing from an unexpected source. When Kat Wolfe and her veterinarian mother, Ellen, move to Bluebell Bay, it offers a fresh start for their family. Dr. Wolfe quickly gets caught up in her work while Kat decides to start her own pet-sitting business in order to earn money for the laptop she craves. But when she arrives to take care of a parrot for a client, the man is nowhere to be seen, and something seems off about his disappearance. Kat's new business also introduces her to Harper Lamb, an American girl who is just as interested in solving that mystery as Kat is. The girls combine forces and start their own detective agency with Kat providing the boots on the ground and Harper using her coding skills online to do some sleuthing. Theirs is clearly a friendship that was meant to be. Fans of books featuring strong girls as well as very cool animals, some twists and turns, and a dash or two of humor will enjoy this one. The plot might be a bit far-fetched and the appearance of Kat's grandfather a bit coincidental, but I still enjoyed how well all the parts fit together here.
Kat Wolfe Investigates by Lauren St. John is an upper middle grade mystery set in England. I really liked Kat, she's a spunky 12-year old who lives with her veterinarian mom. After a break-in at their home, her mom is gets a job as the vet in Bluebell Bay, a town on the Jurassic Coast. As Kat begins a pet-sitting business, she quickly finds herself in the middle of a mystery. The story includes a missing person, a parrot that quotes movies, a lonely racehorse, Russian spies, and much more.
Young Kat teams up with American girl Harper who is stuck at home with a broken leg. Harper has mad skills on the computer, and like Kat, she's not afraid to dive into a mystery. The girls get some help from neighbor Edith, the local police, and Kat's estranged grandfather.
The mystery has twists, turns, and the classic red herring. It also features strong themes of friendship and family. I loved Kat's relationship with the animals, especially Tiny--who is not so tiny. The mystery has a classic "Nancy Drew" feel and it's definitely more upper mid-grade. I enjoyed it and will definitely be picking up the next Kat Wolfe book.
The Laura Marlin Mysteries are one of my very favourite mystery series, and I have a feeling Kat Wolfe Investigates is going to live up to that. It follows Kat as she and her mum, who is a vet, relocate to idyllic Bluebell Bay, and Kat gets caught up in a missing persons case after starting a pet-sitting service. She soon meets an American girl called Harper, and together they decide to investigate. I thought they made a great detective team as their strengths really complemented each other, and their friendship was fantastic too. I also adored the wide array of animal characters, who you can see beautiful illustrations of on the French flaps at the back of the book (and opening those at the front of the book will give you the treat of seeing the map). Though the mystery plot doesn`t really kick in for a little while, this worked well as we`re given a comprehensive introduction to both the setting and the cast of characters, and once it going I thought the mystery was unique fast paced, with chapters from the point of view of the antagonists adding even more intrigue/tension. 4.5/5
This book is about a girl aka kat starts a pet sitting business. So she started it and the next thing she was caring for a bird named baily, she also started takng care of a horse and a dog. So she was a pet siter but she soon became a detevtive when baily's owner goes missing. One reason I love this book is because kat's mom is a vet and kat gets to help with all the animals and finds out she get's a cat of her own well i'll just say it was a type of cat but it wan't what kat was expecting. Another reason I love this book is because she gets help with the mystrey from a girl the same age as her who is also the owner of the horse kat is pet sitting. My favorite character is of course kat because she is really seriouse when it comes to the mystery. One of my favorite parts in the story is when she is in the middle of a fight sceane about to be killed by one of the bad guys who has a gun but she uses a karate skill she had been working on and she saved her self. You should read this book if you like animals, murder mystries, and pet sitting drama.
I've had 'Kat Wolfe Investigates' on my TBR pile for a while since I was lucky enough to find this new copy in a charity shop haul. It's the first book that I've read from author Lauren St John and it definitely won't be my last!
When Kat and her mum relocate to the idyllic Bluebell Bay with her mum's job as a vet, little did Kat realise that she would soon be swept up in international crime and revenge. What starts as a summer job, pet-sitting local animals for pocket money, leads to unique friendships and a mystery to solve.
Packed with intrigue, clues to follow and daring escapades, this fast-paced story offers adventure on every page and is the kind of tale that 8 - 12 year old 'amateur detectives' will really enjoy! That said, I read it as an adult and loved it!
Lauren packs the mystery with fascinating facts and historical information, the characters are believable, and the plot is cleverly thought out, making it a real pleasure to read.
I can highly recommend this first book in the Kat Wolfe series, and I really look forward to reading the next!
This one had a bit of a slower start but it wasn't long before we were following along on a great mystery filled with a whole host of interesting animals and humans alike. While I may be an adult now, I still enjoyed this start to a new series and absolutely would have adored it when I was a child obsessed with the likes of Animal Planet and Crocodile Hunter dreaming of maybe one day being a vet.
I enjoyed the complex and diverse family dynamics that were witnessed in this novel as well as the fact that they were not presented in a way that children may not grasp immediately.
The mystery was great and will be a joy to students before they graduate to older books such as Truly Devious, A Study in Charlotte, or Sherlock Holmes.
I would not give this to my younger cousins that are about first grade reading level but I would give it to family friends' children between the ages of 8 and 14.
