Agent Dash Cooke likes simple assignments: annihilate the dangerous monsters and move on. He likes a simple life too: a furnished apartment that he switches out for a new one every few years and no messy personal connections.
Then his boss gives him an assignment that’s not simple at all.
Reports claim that a beautiful old house in Sacramento is haunted by a poltergeist, but Dash soon discovers a very different type of spirit. Henry will be destroyed if Dash evicts him. And suddenly Dash’s life has become very complicated indeed.
Kim Fielding lives in Oregon and travels as often as she can manage. A professor by day, at night she rushes into a phone booth to change into her author costume (which involves comfy clothes instead of Spandex and is, sadly, lacking a cape). Her superpowers include the ability to write nearly anywhere, often while simultaneously doling out assistance to her family. Her favorite word to describe herself is "eclectic" and she finally got that seventh tattoo.
There I was yesterday saying to Kati here that I don’t do fantasy and then proceeding to read and love this book that is exactly THAT , fantasy!!! Omg, this was beautiful 🥹 I only read one other book in this series and I enjoyed that one but I loved this. I LOVED Henry, a house spirit with long hair and pointed ears, (how cool is that??) so freaking much. I love the tenderness, I love the writing , I just loved everything about it. It’s short and the plot is rather thin, the only reason I won’t give it 5 stars .
Thank god!!! there is a new book in this series because it suddenly reminded me how much I use to enjoy Kim Fielding's writing, especially this series. I read it years ago and have completely forgotten the details but I still could remember the plotline so I feel this could be read as a standalone novella. Now, as predicted I am gonna reread the first few books of this series and then will try to catch up the missed ones.
I'm so happy to return to the Bureau world again! This series is like a favorite city that I get to visit now and then.
This particular story is novella length and takes place in 2022, mostly in Sacramento and Los Angeles. Here's a fun fact. The neighborhood where it's set in Sacramento is close to where my oldest kid lives. There are some really nice older houses there. The particular older house in this story is home to an unusual spirit named Henry.
If you're new to the Bureau series, you can jump right into this one if you like. But if you've been following the series, be prepared for... some surprises. (Mwah-hah-hah!)
This one may be my favorite of the series so far. Dash and Henry’s interactions, character growth and relationship were poignant, heartwarming and touching. The plot developments with Townsend were completely unexpected to me and I’m really, really looking forward to seeing where Fielding takes us next.
I highly recommend this series. It’s unique, taking the reader on so many intriguing, captivating and thought provoking journeys. Though I have read most of the books twice at this point, I am positive I’ll read them all again eventually, partly because I’m super forgetful and want to read them all together, one after the other so I can more fully appreciate the ways they’re linked and partly because it’s just a fabulous series.
Sadly, I found this addition to one of my favorite series, The Bureau, the weakest of the current 10 books. I believe this is the first one I’ve rated less than four stars.
Holy crap on a cracker! I'm zinging along, eating this up last night. Our story of a wizened, lonely agent and Henry, the house spirit. We all need a house spirit, I know I do. I absolutely adore Henry. So good. So, so good. I get the why and the where, close to the end, ready to move on to the final two in the series. Wondering if there will be more. KABOOM!!! Whaaaattt? I had to go back and read it again. And again. It's as if the author decided it was time to mess with our heads, shake things up. Questions. So many questions and not enough answers. I'm confounded. Just where the author wanted us to be. Complacency is boring in paranormal romance. Let's shake things up a bit. Brilliant. Utterly brilliant. Read on Dear Reader. *****+
I was SHOCKED when I read this novella and read that
Anyway, I thought this was another solid entry. It's one of the "most current" story (I mean, the story took place in 2022). I loved the idea of a house spirit as a creature here, instead of ghosts or any apparition. It is unique and rarely used in paranormal romance. Henry was sweet and I loved that he finally got his happiness and new home with Dash.
Thank you Midsummer Night Elf from Goodreads Secret Santa event for this book

Dash and Henry were just too adorable for words ... the author seems to have gotten the formula down pat for these human-monsterish romances. The exit of a longstanding character at the end seems to signal a whole new vista / horizon for future stories in the series; bring them on please!
Wait, whaaaaaaaat?!?! What the heck have I just read??? I mean, how? And why?
4.5 stars rounded up.
Well, it's the most surprising volume (and ending) of the whole Bureau series!
The pairing was, again, sweet, even though Dash seemed all growly, and bossy, and bad-assy. The house spirit, Henry was his perfect match ;)
The time span was a tad too short to my liking. But, as we already know, in this series insta-love is a norm due to the length of the instalments.
The only thing I don't get in this part is Chief Townsend. Does anybody know what's going on?? Tag the spoilers, guys, if you wish to share your thoughts in the comments.
A fabulous, heartrending addition to the Bureau series.
While I wouldn't normally dream of contradicting the author I'd strongly suggest new readers start with any (all) of the other books in the series first.
I quite enjoyed this soft romance, though I found it predictable. Sometimes that is quite nice. Dash is quite the blunt object here, but Henry's a delight.
If you're a fan of Kim fielding's Bureau series you will love the latest entry. You also have heart palpalpitations, screaming anger, and deep despair. And a happy ending.
I can not give a summary other than the blurb due to the huge surprises. Let's just say it is a normal excellent Bureau story and than OMG, Fielding wouldn't, holy shit she did, fix it, and WTF?
The Bureau is an automatic one click for me in Kindle and Audible. On my list for consideration of the best of 2022.
NOTE: This is Book 10 in this series, but it can certainly be read as a standalone. I recommend reading the other books – mostly because they are really well written and also because the characters from those books are mentioned throughout this one.
Dash Cooke is an agent with the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs. In this capacity, he has specialized as a sort of monster hunter. He’s very very good at his job. He’s finally taking a vacation – one he has been pushed into by Chief Townsend, the head of the Bureau. However, he’s only been in Portugal for a very short time when he’s called home. It seems that he has to deal with a problem in Sacramento. The assignment is to deal with an infestation at a house that has the interest of someone who is politically powerful. So it needs to be dealt with in all due haste.
Dash is NOT happy about it. A poltergeist is not a very interesting assignment at all. He really doesn’t know why he has to be the one to do it. He’s even less enthused when he meets the house owners. He really doesn’t like them. He also knows immediately that this is not a poltergeist. Because he can see him. And communicate with him. He’s not like any being that Dash has come across before. He says his name is Henry and he belongs to the house. Dash is confused. The longer he interacts with Henry, the younger and stronger he appears. When Henry tells him he literally cannot leave the house or he will be killed, Dash doesn’t know what to think. But when Henry shows him, well Dash is convinced.
Now comes the dilemma. He doesn’t want Henry to die and if he removes him from the house, it definitely could happen. Dash is able to minimize the threat, but he can’t be with Henry 24/7. Even the agency archivist seems to be at a loss as to what to do to protect Henry and isn’t finding any answers. For some reason, Henry brings out Dash’s protective instincts. He vows to keep Henry with him and safe until the Chief is ready to deal with things. But then things take a really unexpected turn!
This might just be my favorite of the Bureau stories. I don’t know why really, because I’ve really enjoyed this whole series. I just loved Dash and how Henry helps him fix some of his broken pieces. I don’t want to spoil any of this story for the readers, because there are some pretty big surprises here that I think are best discovered without any previous teasers. Suffice to say that there are big changes in the offing. Dash and Henry get to know each other over the course of this assignment. Henry wants to take care of Dash. He learns more about Dash than Dash has shared with anyone in years. In fact, Henry learns more about Dash than probably anybody except the Chief knows. Henry is a lovely gentle soul who is brave beyond words. Dash respects Henry as well as cares for him and wants to protect him. With Dash’s past, he is well aware of what it’s like to not be able to protect oneself. He is grateful for the things that he has been able to do and the job he has, but he would like maybe something a little bit more – if he can only figure out how to get it. He really does want to pay it forward.
I highly recommend this latest book. If you are a fan of this series, you need to jump on this! There is just no end to this writer’s creativity and this story provides a shocking surprise as well as a satisfying HEA. These two characters really deserve something good and they have found what they need in each other – another surprise. I absolutely loved this. And honestly I am so excited to see what happens next!
I was going to start the review with I didn’t know there was a new Kim Fielding book about the Bureau. And then I was going to say my usual ‘I love Chief Townsend!’ I’m very much hoping that the author has something up their sleeve and that he will be back. Please. The stories wouldn’t be the same without him. He is the best part of the Bureau series. Seeing Grimes and Tenrael in charge was comforting. The Bureau will go on. All that said, I truly enjoyed this book and what I loved about it was Henry! He is a beautiful, lovely, service submissive who needs his house and people. My heart broke at the scene of him standing there in his house with Dash, wearing the threadbare mismatched clothing and looking a haggard mess, with his little pile of possessions. 😭 He was awesome and so very well written. A different type supernatural character and a different type setup as a house spirit, one who is chained to the house. This plot line really worked for me. I liked Dash, too, and the way he took care of and protected Henry. As usual, Chief Townsend knew what he was doing by putting these two together. The book had the usual lovely writing, but I’m sad about the Chief. Bring him back, please.

Solid entry in one of my favorite series as Agent Dash Cooke meets Henry, a house spirit. There are a number of neat twists in this one, especially towards the end with Townsend, our favorite paranormal matchmaker. What exactly is he up to?
Not my favorite in the series (that would be "Conned" and "Convicted") but clever nonetheless. If a bit more time had been spent on the overall story and perhaps some added background on Dash's character, this would have been a 5 star read for me.
I agree with another reviewer: while this book *could* be enjoyed as a standalone, I got so much more out of it - especially re: the shocking twist near the end that I wouldn't dream of spoiling here 😱😈🤫 - because of the context from binging the whole series in order before I got to this one. Henry and Dash were lovely together, and I'm excited (and impatient!) with the implication of more to come in this world!
I enjoyed the mystery of the supernatural being here. The bureau hero was different than usual too. Most interestingly there's some plot progression in the larger arc of the series. I was very invested, though the romance was certainly fast. I hope we get to the future events soon. While these books have all been good or great, I'm really waiting for some kind of bigger conclusion already.
I have loved all of the Bureau Stories so far, but this one was definitely unexpected! It's a love story, as they all are, but with a twist that promises something exciting waiting in the wings. I finished the book in one sitting, because I couldn't bear to set it aside, and those are my very favorite kind of books! Enjoy the journey!
Dash and Henry’s story is a solid addition to The Bureau series. Likable MC’s, an unexpected plot twist, and the addition of favorite characters from previous books. Finally, a foreshadowing of something (probably unpleasant) arriving in the near future. Bring on book eleven!
A new entry in a series that I've really enjoyed. This particular book contains a huge development for we fans of the prior books. Very interested in how it works out. We also get the return of one of the original, beloved couples (you demon you).
For new readers I don't think you'll understand much if you haven't read the prior stories.
Oh. My. Goodness. That ending. I just.. wow. Okay, so this is officially one of my absolute favorites of the series and I'm so excited to see what comes next. Henry was great. I love him so much. Dash took a little longer for me to warm up to. There are still a bunch questions I want answered, though.
What?! I love the way this ends, it’s spooky and kind of oooooh! Townsends death is the end of an era, and an ominous start to a new cycle. I can’t imagine how hard it was for the Chief, since he knew his end was nigh (I love that word).

Another great book in this series. Each novella is short, but they tell a complete story. I love the world building and the way she creates characters that we can't help caring about. Recommend the entire series.
