Rate this book
A grumpy tiger thinks he can be a lonely drifter? Not on Ollie Jerrick self-proclaimed Happiness Champion’s watch.

Ollie Jerrick has a hero complex. As a wolf shifter, he’s been surrounded by real-life heroes since his dads rescued him from an evil witch when he was six. He’s the son of a doctor wolf shifter, his boss is a billionaire griffin, and his big brother…well, he’s a super-powered mage mated to the mythical Chosen One. Not convinced yet? The hellhounds, guardians of the human realm…they’re Ollie’s adopted uncles. So when a mysterious tiger arrives, Ollie decides to save him from his miserable, lonely life. It’s not like it’ll be hard…right?

Bayu prefers the solitude being a tiger provides, but tragedy leads him to Nick Smith and the menagerie of kids he rescued. He accepts the role as a pack guard on one condition: the lion shifter will use his powerful connections to help Bayu find the answers he seeks. He has zero intentions of staying on a permanent basis. Some pack members seem to have other ideas, though. Especially Ollie, a young, gorgeous wolf who seems to enjoy nothing more than talking Bayu’s ears off while coaxing him into leaving his isolated existence behind.

Bayu and Ollie find themselves brought together in ways neither of them could have anticipated. When tragedy strikes again, this time it’s Bayu who has to decide if he’s hero enough to save Ollie from himself, especially when the cost will be nothing less than Bayu’s heart.

Audio: 3.5-4 stars Michael Dean was pretty good.
Book: 2 stars. DNF @80% aka page 272

The beginning was promising, but then it was too focused on the other characters rather than Ollie and Bayu. Idk I didn’t feel the romantic connection between Ollie and Bayu.

Overall I am bummed since I stopped caring about 50% but I wanted to see if there was any redeeming qualities. Even with the big thing that happened.. I didn’t feel anything. I think it’s cause I didn’t reread any of the series sooo the amount of connection I felt for any of the characters was low haha 😂

Only read it if you read previous books in the series + Hellhound Champions + Chosen Champions at least. It's all about family and packs. If you don't have an emotional connection to the characters - you would be bored and lost with all the name dropping.
I still love Ollie, and Bayu is a great mate for him, but the story was non-existent. It's all about overcoming the grief, and there definitely had to be a trigger warning for that.
Rounding up just because I still enjoy the characters and their dynamics. Though I don't always remember what book they are from 😂

Ollie's happy ever after is tinged with a bittersweet edge

I was expecting the bittersweet part of this book after seeing others referring to crying loads but I didn't find myself as affected.

I won't spoil anything, only to say that the particular happening felt genuine to the narrative, not just thrown in to cause a drama.

One thing this book does well is show off how interconnected all the different packs in the Chosen Universe are because of the Jerricks.

As for Ollie's romance with Bayu, it's a beautiful one filled with quiet support and gentle moments that demonstrate how perfect they are for each other.

I'm intrigued as to where Macy will be taking the journey next as there's a few potential angles to come out of this story.

Goodness! I adore Ollie so much since he was adopted by the Jerricks and this heartbreaking and heartwarming story was so fitting for him. Such a lovable character. 🥲😍

I received an advance copy via patreon

I was SO excited for this book - Ollie is the best! So imagine my surprise that last quarter involved which has honestly just left me grumpy and upset and conflicted. I also had my own expectations and hopes regarding Bayu’s missing son and friend, so that things on that front weren’t resolved-resolved also makes me grumpy. Like, I enjoyed the majority of this book and I loved Ollie finally getting his mate and the last chapter was super sweet and cute, but also I feel betrayed (maybe not quite the right word) that .

I’m still planning to continue this universe and I still like Macy’s stories, but this one is on thin ice, which really just compounds my feelings of disappointment because I’ve been looking forward to Ollie’s book basically since I got into this series.

Ben’s book better be better!

I ugly cried when reading this one...

Yall, I have loved this series from the beginning, and yes, I have read them multiple times, but this one broke my heart. I'm not lying about crying, I could not stop the tears.

Spoilers ahead

So here we finally have Ollie's story. It was Ollie who began this tale (if you reread them in order) and has been around forever. He was 6 when we first met him but 21 in his story. His mate is Bayu, a tiger who has been searching for his friend and child. I'm not really sure how old he is, if it was mentioned, I missed it.

Anyways, these two have known each other for years, but it wasn't until Ollie was older and Bayu was ready for love, that the mating bond kicked in. I was happy to read that.

As we learned from a previous story, Ollie was also a virgin. These two did not have as many sex scenes as is usual in the series, but to be honest, that was fine. Ollie does have a scent kink, so that was cool.

This was much more a getting to know who Ollie is now and introducing Bayu's reason for being around. I really hope we do get an answer for him. He deserves that.

Izzy and Calli finally get back together. Not gonna lie, I thought that was dragged out a little too long.

Anyways, Nick's pack help Ollie and Bayu build a waterfall and pond surrounded by rocks and plants. Its beautiful and every one loves it.

But lets get to the crying and the reason for it.

Without going into details, it involved grandpa William and a set of twins.

William has also been in the story since the beginning. I was not expecting that to happen and I hated it. I know it had to happen eventually but this is a world of magic and shapeshifting, miracles could happen.

And the babies. Oh those poor babies and momma. I hated the lack of details of the mom, I felt like she didn't matter much.

I really loved this one and can't wait til the audio.

One word….disappointing. Ugh! I hate to say it but it was not what I wanted for Ollie. It was very depressing and sad. And seriously…did we need another death? Another loss? I knew going into this what was going to happen but damn! It still hit hard and I didn’t even like how it was done. So many pages of sadness and grief. I balled! I don’t know…I just hoped for more with this book. I did like the last few chapters and I’m excited to see how things go. I’m still looking forward to Ben’s book but I hope it’s more happier and sweet.

Macy Blake has done it again. Any writer that can fill me with joy one moment, reduce me to tears (both sad and happy) in the next is one helluva an author. It will be hard to review without spoiling anything, but I will try. We *finally* get Ollie’s book and it’s a doozy. It starts out as one of the sweetest books in the series (and who doesn’t want a sweet story for Ollie?) Bayu a loner tiger shifter has been hanging around as a camp guard for years, but always remains detached from Nick’s pack. Let’s just say that Bayu has some grief-filled baggage. Ollie’s goal is to get Bayu to join the pack, but what happens instead is that Ollie finds the love of his life without even knowing it at first. Even Ollie needs a little nudge now and then. By 3/4 of the way through the book, Ollie and Bayu seem to have everything either of them has ever wanted, when sudden news devastates everyone, and I mean EVERYONE. [Be sure you have a box Kleenex® handy, that’s all I’m gonna say.] But with pain comes growth and miracle for the couple. At least my final (extremely manly) tears were ones of absolute joy.

Ollie-babble, engaged!

WITH KID GLOVES is part of the large CHOSEN ONE UNIVERSE, and the books absolutely should in order for the maximum enjoyment. Trust me, the journey is WELL worth it.

Ollie is probably my favorite Jerrick, so to get a whole book with him was great for me.

The real winner for me here is the found family-aspect. Not only do Ollie's parents find him and his siblings as children and choose to keep them, but the way they are integrated into Nick's world, which is one, giant found family, made my heart really happy.

The (first) twist of this book hit me hard. Oh, to feel Ollie's despair was heartbreaking. He is not meant to feel anything other than joy. But it brought everyone closer together, which I appreciated.

Then the second twist glued my heart back together. Even if I thought Maverick would pick Ollie and Bayu, this was also an okay solution for me.

While Ollie is the star for me, Bayu really comes out of his shell, which was lovely to see. Bayu grounds Ollie, while Ollie brings joy and energy to Bayu, so they were a perfect match.

While I will probably not reread it as many times as I have Sweet Nothings (which would almost be impossible since I am 6 or 7 times behind), this definitely won't be left behind for me.

Why? This one wasn't supposed to hurt. Ollie is the happy one. Sunshine/Grumpy but the grumpy outweighed the sunshine, with Bayu grieving and then Ollie and everyone else grieving. This went from Ollie supporting Bayu to a whole downer, from building a memorial to saying goodbye to a loved one. So much sadness. Unsure about the wolf at the moment, it was sudden and felt like the mother died just so Ollie and Bayu could have kids.

this book shows us that Ollie isn't just the comic relief. yes we know he's there for everyone, he makes sure they don't take life to seriously, but this one, showed the depth of his love and character. it showed what mates means. what it looks like when they aren't in the right place in life. They are perfect for each other, in my opinion, someone like Ollie needs a person willing to see him as well as no hinder what him and I just really liked it.

With Kid Gloves is the fourth and, for now, final book in the Magical Mates series, a spin-off of Blake’s expansive and intricate Chosen One Universe. Chronologically, Ollie kicks the whole thing off when he shows up as a scared and rain-soaked six-year old at Sam’s door. He sets everything in motion and series readers have watched him grow up and mature on the sidelines. His story has been long-awaited and it didn’t disappoint. This book is best read in order with the rest of the series, as well as at least the prequel of the Chosen One series, Sweet Nothings. To be fair, it has the most context when reading most, if not, all the books in the universe, but that’s not strictly necessary.

This book has an overarching theme of grief, but there’s a whole lot of love to balance it out. Many readers will want tissues for this book, as it deals with some hard realities and death. But woven throughout is Ollie’s trademark sunshiny attitude, a bit of his shenanigans, and his unrelenting optimism.

Liked, but not loved. I can honestly say I was not ready for that AT ALL (I’m not part of Blake’s social media). I think Ollie has been a favorite since Sam & Vaughn’s book, across the Hellhound series, and into this one. I wanted him to have the most perfect mate & story, and this kinda delivered, I mean it wasn’t drama filled so there’s that. The whole Grandpa Will part was so freaking sad, was it expected? Sure, but man, still hard.

It’s definitely a bit of a slow burn, I honestly didn’t remember Toby being the way he was portrayed in this book, and I still think Zachary is out of place in the series, wait, is that even his name? Anyways, this is one where you think you know how it’s going to end at like idk, 50-60% but then it doesn’t, and then you read some more and you think ah, yes, now I know, and nope, you’d be wrong. Honestly I was sad to be wrong that last time. Was I stoked to see Nick and Gus and Bird? Hell yeah, Nick will forever be one of my favorite characters as well in the Chosen One universe. I am glad that his relationship with Bayu played out the way it did, I’m glad it ended the way it did in spite of the many tears I shed. This book closed a few little “train tracks” that were still open, could it be we’re getting close to the end?

ETA: the more I keep thinking about the book, the less I like it? No, the more disappointed I become, yeah that’s a little better. I think my biggest hang up is the HUGE plot hole when it comes to Bayu and his friend. It seriously bugs the hell out of me. No phones? Why not go with them in the first place? But really, no phones? Ugh I can’t. Ok, I’ll stop now.

It is amazing that the world in which Macy Blake has created first introduced us to a 6 year old Ollie, and he is now 21 years old building a relationship with his fated mate, the mysterious loner tiger Bayu.

Bayu is the perfect mate for Ollie who is such a vibrant person who jumps from place to place exuding joy from his very pores. Bayu is a strong and silent sentinel, exactly who the effervescent Olie needs to help balance him, and Ollie helps bring Bayu happiness and shows him the true meaning of pack. As Ollie encounters one of the hardest things he’s ever had to face in his young life, Bayu displays why he was chosen by fate for one of my favourite characters in this entire intertwined world.

This was a very emotional read for a few different reasons, but it also ended with such a beautiful and hopeful feel to it. Nick, as usual, displays why he might not be the “typical” type of alpha, but why he is the exact perfect type of alpha for this hodge podge pack of shifters and fae kind and why everyone loves him and turns to him when they are in need.

I will always find myself running to read a Macy Blake book and this was no different. I absolutely devoured it and highly recommend it. As usual, due to Macy’s world building, this story is best enjoyed after reading what has come before.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Big Changes, New Beginnings and Mates

Gosh, this book.
If you follow this series, you'll know a lot about the history with these characters, but if not, Blake injects the book with helpful background.
Ollie, wolf shifter, has been working for griffin Victor for a couple of years now, becoming an adult. And he's become closer friends with the ever silent River, Bayu.
Things come to a head when Ollie senses a deep well of pain in Bayu and we learn why.
Ollie is like the sticky glitter glue who holds all the packs together with his Ollie-babble and exuberance.
It's slowly wearing down Bayu's defences too, so when Ollie drags him on a secret mission involving his sister Emily, he has little choice.
Of course, spending so much time together, the chemistry sizzles, bonds are formed and Bayu is dragged kicking and screaming into "people-ing".
Just over half way through Grandpa William gets involved in Ollie's schemes and we now know where he gets it from.
The bowling scenes are great, but the romantic interventions are hilarious.
Without spoilers, there's so much that happens in this book that makes the reader laugh and even cry.
This is a massive character arc for Ollie, and Nick, plus an intriguing story arc in development.
It is heartbreaking, emotional, sexy, funny, sweet and there's added Gus Gus scenes.
This is without doubt the strongest book in this series.
Terrific stuff.

I thought this was okay. The "bittersweet" element was mildly sad and didn't really affect me, but that's mostly due to how quickly everything was glossed over. This book is mainly about ALL the previous families and Nick's packmates - with cameos of characters from different series - rather than being strictly about Bayu and Ollie. If you haven't read at least 5 of Macy Blake's novels, you'll be lost with all the needless exposition and name-dropping. Not much happened, but sometimes that's okay in a multi-series story, yk?

Oh, Ollie, my dear Ollie... what the everloving heck did I just read?

I know, I was expecting TOO much going in. I had said as much in an earlier review... but, why do people not follow MY plans? And by people, I mean authors...

Obviously, Ms. Blake and I did NOT see eye to eye on how Ollie would get his HEA! That being said... I guess her "plan" was OK. Not great... but, OK.

totally marvelous, absolutely emotional satisfying

Rating:5🌈

Magical Mates, part of Macy Blake’s The Chosen One universe, is an adorable little series , and With Kid Gloves it goes out with a magical, magnificent narrative bang!

Absolutely my favorite of the series, it plays beautifully to the strengths of Blake’s themes and characters, reminding us and them of the importance of love in every aspect, the need for support from people who love and support each other whether it be family or pack or both, and the deep emotional connections that we make and share are sometimes broken. And need to be grieved for.

What a story.

The base structure starts with Tiger shifter, Bayu, who’s been a bit of an enigma. He’s a crush for Ollie, a formidable force that lingers in the woods, protecting the compound, and silently guarding those around him. Now as Bayu starts collecting rocks to build something, his past is slowly revealed. This nebulous project becomes, as a perfect narrative tool, a way for Blake to build a strong framework for a secondary theme . As the project grows, reshaping itself into something memorable, something remarkable happens. I won’t spoil it. Just say this thread is such a deeply rooted one in the philosophy of this universe and the overall storyline. I love it so much.

It helps with the relationship between Ollie and Bayu, which builds realistically. And they in turn extend outward to the other players in the compound who have need of them both.

Several major characters we have grown to love through past storylines and novels are at crossroads here. And one will die. And everyone will grieve deeply, including the reader.

I didn’t expect this element in a book about children, rescues, and even babies. But it makes sense. Because this is about cycles of nature too. Natural passages of life. Blake handles this so perfectly, with the love, compassion and sensitivity I have come to expect from the author.

The ending is so powerful and well conceived. It’s hard to believe that this is the last in this series but it also makes sense that it is. That it’s put a closure to so many threads and we get to see so many of the couples who got their families.

As I said, it by far, my favorite of the series. An absolute 5 star read and a comfort level storyline!

I’m highly recommending this fabulous book! Read them in the order that they are written. Unfamiliar with the Chosen One universe? The author’s website has a comprehensive reading guide for you there. It’s a must with so many series and books involved.

With Kid Gloves by Macy Blake is the 4th book in her Magical Mates series. I highly suggest that you read the others in this and previous series first as they introduce characters that occur in this one as well as a continuing plot line. This is the story of Ollie and Bayu. Ollie is the youngest of Sam and Vaughn Jerrick’s rescued children, most of whom have grown up since they were found. He works for Victor, a griffin, and finds it satisfying. He is also beloved by all the members of his family and stays in touch with them to the point that he knows what is going on in all of their lives. Bayu is a tiger shifter who has found his way to the Jerrick and Smith packs looking for his missing friend and their son. He is grumpy and doesn’t say much, often staying in his tiger form. He is also one of the guards for the packs. Ollie has known him for two years and has made it his mission to get to know him better, even if it is often hard going. Eventually Ollie breaks down his defenses and helps him to start healing, offering to help him with a project, which brings them to discover, in an interesting way, that they are mates. Then another tragedy strikes where Bayu helps Ollie since he has come to know him so well and in the end they get all that they are longing for. I really enjoyed this story as I have all of the others. Ms. Blake has created a place like no other with lots of love among species and the suspense that comes from happenings when many paranormal worlds collide. Ollie is such a sweetheart and Bayu has much heartbreak to overcome while always being a protector. All of their friends and Ollie’s family play such a big part in this story as they help out all they can. I especially enjoyed how Nick handles his pack, Ollie’s outspoken grandpa, the hellhounds, and the children and their antics throughout the book. There were times that I was laughing out loud from the “Ollie babble” and other times I was crying at the sadness in the pack when the unforeseen happens. I highly recommend this story, especially if you have read the ones before it, and I am looking forward to reading whatever comes next from Ms. Blake’s imagination.

When (spoiler alert) the death of a significant side character actually improves things... (It's me, not you, don't worry.)

I finished the book but in a "skipped a few chapters to get to the good part just to stumble upon slightly more interesting events before getting swept by the Tragedy".

In my defence, it wasn't the tragedy that made me feel better, I was (surprisingly, unreasonably) moved and sad (and crying!) when the character I am not going to name kicked the bucket. Because I didn't really like them. Him, okay, 9 out of 10 characters are male so no surprise hopefully. In fact, he was annoying and provided more of... an exposition (except that one chapter when he was used as the blunt tool to Make Shirt Happen). The best I can tell, it's the return of (some semblance) of balance. Most books, they have their ups and downs, their dramas and lulls, etc. etc. but Blake books tend to have Mushy Stuff followed by Corny Stuff followed by Cute and Adorable characters being... well, being. I am basically supposed to go "awww" and not stop until the end and I am kind of not this kind of reader and that's totally on me but that's why that serious vibe helped bring down all that mush into something manageable and made even a nice point about grieving and everything.

Mostly, I need to stop reading anything from this universe. I came here, I enjoyed some but these days, I can't stand it, accept it, move on.

Ollie is one of my favorite characters from The Chosen Universe (he's on my top 3 along with Scout and Bailey), so I couldn't wait to actually meet Bayu and read their HEA!
It's hilarious how Ollie can be so confident and awkward at the same time, so it isn't a surprise that a certain silent and grumpy guard can't help but fall for the sweet wolf. I really think the story was set perfectly to show how they went from barely talking to each other to finding out they were mates. It took them two years to get there, but with Bayu's past and Ollie being so young, they needed that time to be open to that kind of bond.
It was really nice to see so many characters from The Chosen Universe, especially Grandpa William who is the best grandpa you could ask for, I'm so glad we got to see so much of him, the bond he shares with Ollie is just beautiful!
My heart broke a few times for Bayu throughout the book and later for Ollie, but it was amazing to see how they supported each other, and they can always count on their packs no matter what happens.

It took some time to finally be able to read Ollie's book, but it was totally worth it!

An ARC was provided by the author. This is my honest review.

Okay, much as I love Ollie, I'm finding these large cast books have less emphasis on the couple than on the group as a whole. I mean I enjoyed that and I liked that we find out more about Emily and her issues and Callie and ... brainstall, the human, so lots of different stories circling around Ollie and Bayu, who didn't stay grumpy and a loner for long once Ollie made his move.

Yes, I cried on an airplane. Sigh. It was inevitable but still very hard. As an aside, something I'm curious about is humans that marry in. Is Sam going to die at 80 while Vaughn lives to be 200+? It's never really explained that maybe the humans once mated get a longer lifeline, but I'm always wondering if the humans are aging while their supernatural mates are just coasting along looking 25 forever.

So of course I enjoyed this because I enjoy this world and I was glad Ollie found his man and some other issues were wrapped up and that they've found a purpose for Nick as more and more of the children find their families. I would have liked to see something more concrete with Bayu's back story, rather than an assumption of what happened, some proof but maybe in the future it will come up again? I can hope.

DNF @ 9%, 2nd Set, 2025.

What the blurb doesn't mention, is that bayu, has a wife and kid who are missing. That's his tragedy. He says he doesn’t love her and yet, have great heats with her that led to them having his son? Whut? Ok. And then, the story happens where Ollie meets Bayu everyday to pass on pack gossips. BUT, he’s attracted to him and jealous of other tigers he’s met? Whoa whiplash. Don’t you have a wife and kid to worry about??
For a person you don’t love, you thought of spending every waking day with her and travelling the world with her? It's like they want to write a bi character but then don't want them to be bi, so pseudo cheating it will be.

i will admit i didn’t understand anything during the 1st chapter and that’s my fault for going in completely blind. And esp didn’t understand why Ollie’s boss pampers him so much and yet the guy has a mate and kids?? Like, all the black vip cards, has changed Ollie’s fashion, made him wear clothes the boss likes, etc. What’s the history there?

Then comes the alpha nick and a “mistake” he’s made. That being getting a woman pregnant and now he has a daughter whom he hides. Yikes.

Ok. i’m out. i don’t need this in my headspace rn.

Mmmm.... I've always liked Ollie, since he first appeared as a child so I was looking forward to his book...
It was a good book but a bit heavier than the other magical mates series... It had almost zero danger and more of heartbreak...
There were different problems, love problems, family problems...
It was, except for the lighter parts with sunshine Ollie, quite a sad book.
We finally know the reason why Bayu came to the Smith pack and stayed, though we don't get a proper conclusion. I guess that's what happens to many but still it's really sad.
We get to know what happened to Emily in college, that one actually got resolved, and I'm glad for her.
Three knew children join the Smith pack, and those stories are always heartbreaking stories.
And we have a really sad part with a loss of someone dear to Ollie, luckily I had already read a spoiler so I knew it was coming and prepared myself, so even though I cried a lot I didn't throw the book away and kept on reading.
It was quite a sad book overall, though I did like how they went through the process of healing it still hit hard.

This book is so good! I've learned to expect great things from Macy, and this book was no different.

Bayu is a tiger shifter who never intended to become part of Nick's pack, he was looking for a child and was directed to Nick and the children. Now, he couldn't possibly leave without making sure all the kids are safe.

Ollie's a people fixer.... he has always been drawn to the loners and scared kids/shifters who just need a friend. So when a growly tiger is introduced as part of the guards for the kids of Nick's pack, he does what he's always done and pushes to get to know this tiger.

Bayu and Ollie are absolutely 💯 good for each other .... Bayu tempers Ollie's motor-mouth and Ollie brings out the smiles and charm that Bayu had burried so deeply. Together they support each other through a loss that could tear a person in two, and come out the other side so much closer than they were before.
