After a war of twists and turns and a brief convalescence, Arcus is finally ready to return to Lainur’s capital. There he’ll meet Ceylan’s father, King Crosellode, and be rewarded for his valiant efforts—although he’s not the only one due for an audience with the king. While rumors about Arcus continue to spread, the Empire evaluates its own part in the war. Will the nation remain a sleeping lion, or begin plotting its next move? And what of the cryptic quest to seek out an emerald on Chain’s behalf, which Arcus received in a dream? Without any clues as to what it might mean, he hardly knows where to begin. But one thing’s for sure: he’s going to be busy for a long while yet.
There was so much story in the first four books I had high hopes. Those hopes where dashed upon the rocks of mediocrity. Nothing really happens in this book. There is no story arch, no cheracter development, and he isn't even finished recovering from the battle in the fourth book by the end of this one. None of the many plot threads see any development. Instead there is an award, he half learns one new sword skill, and imports a bunch of desert recipes. The entire last chapter and epilog where only filler. Would it have killed the auther to show some meaningful story? Give us a payoff on the sisters demon, reveal Sue's true identity, have him find some hint to explain Chains request, perhaps find a lead on increasing his aether as a clif hanger in the end of the last chapter, or at least have him fully heald and ready for the next challenge. This book took out all of my motivation to continue the series.
It’s obvious Purce knows the prince is actually Sue, so that’s interesting. The dinner party was actually quite interesting. However, the fight with Charlotte was pretty boring. Also Joshua finally heard about Arcus’s commendation from the king.
The dream from Chain and the quest to find the emerald was great! Also it was mentioned in this book or the last that Ceylon’s mother was descended from phantoms, so the fact that Chain looks like Sue is interesting.

Enjoyable but no magic or action in this story. The diversion from the web novel is interesting and I'm definitely curious to how it changes events from what already exists in the web novel. I just hope that volume 6 comes out sooner than volume 5 did.
This book worked well as a break after the action-packed sequences in the previous two books. I did keep waiting for significant plot development to happen, but I think ultimately I was satisfied. This book consolidates the character arcs developed in the previous two books and reintroduces characters who will likely be important to the series going forward but didn't receive much time since volume 2.
