*I received a free ARC of this book, with thanks to the author and Anne Cater of Random Things Blog Tours. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*
This collection of crime stories features some short stories, some very short stories and some slightly longer short stories, all on the theme of murderers and/or the people who (try to) catch them.
Every story is very well-written and thoroughly readable. The very short ones, like A Grave Mistake or The Man Cave reminded me of the ‘twist-in-the tale’ style stories that you often find in magazines and which I have an infinite appetite for!
My favourite here had to be Nowhere to Run though, which is a longer story offering a sample of detective Kay Hunter’s investigative work. The slightly longer form allowed for more immersion and even some character development among Kay and her colleagues which definitely whet my appetite for more. Which is lucky as there is a whole series (twelve so far) of these police-procedural thrillers!
In fact, this whole collection forms an excellent introduction to the short-form, noir crime tale in general and to Rachel Amphlett’s writing in particular, which will entertain new and established fans equally. Expect murder and violence, but nothing too graphic, in these dark and atmospheric slices of (fictional) criminal activity.

I always love a collection of short stories, especially ones that involve crime, so I jumped at the chance to read Case Files.
What a brilliant collection this is! Although they are all crime themed, there's still a variety of stories from short sharp shockers like A Dirty Business or Special Delivery to longer and more twisty tales like Nowhere to Run or The Reckoning.
Each story is wonderfully written, with realistic characters, evocative descriptions and bags of atmosphere that really pulled me into each story.
I had a few favourites:
The Beachcomber, which is one of the longer stories about Julie, who goes to the beach every day searching, but there's also a secret she's hiding that made for an explosive ending.
A Grave Mistake which kept me guessing and had a little dark humour too.
The Last Days of Tony MacBride was another story that I thought I knew how it was going to pan out but ended up being surprised by.
Also, there's a podcast of these stories so you can read along as you listen, which is something I did myself with a couple of the stories.
I'm very much looking forward to more short stories from Rachel Amphlett and I'm crossing my fingers for volume two of Case Files soon!

I really enjoyed this collection of Crime stories - they varied in length but all had a good twist or journey.
My favourites were:
"The Reckoning" - set in a care home for the elderly, it's surprising to hear their stories of the past, and what about the new arrival? A brilliant way to open the collection showing that you don't always know a person.
"A Dirty Business" - a story about a really bad day a recycling waste centre worker is about to have. Great twist, and one I wasn't quite expecting to pan out as it did.
"A Pain in the Neck" - a different look into the life of a chiropractor. A great short that made me smile, everyone has a job to do after all.
The collection ended with a Detective Kay Hunter short story - I know that Rachel has quite a few full length books in that series, but I haven't read any (yet). The story piqued my interest to investigate more about the characters and see if this is a prequel to them all.
Overall, a good introduction to a new author, her style of writing, and a taster of the Kay Hunter crime series.

If there are two things guaranteed to grab my attention, it’s thrillers and short stories so Case Files Vol. 1 felt like it was written especially for me!
This collection brings together twelve bite-sized crime stories, each packed with mystery, suspense and clever twists. I loved how every story offered something different, from quick shock endings to longer, more immersive tales that left me wanting more.
One of the things I enjoyed most was how easy it was to pick up a story whenever I had a spare moment. Whether I was reading one story or convincing myself “just one more”, Rachel Amphlett has a real talent for creating atmosphere and intrigue in just a few pages.
There were definitely a few standout favourites, but honestly the whole collection was such a fun read. If you’re a thriller fan who loves a fast-paced story and that satisfying twist-in-the-tail feeling, this is well worth adding to your TBR.

Fabulous and Enigmatic................
It is very rare to find a book which narrates itself wonderfully in few words. Case Files: Collected Crime Stories Volume 1 by Rachel Amphlett is one of those books which in few words are going to take you on a fast ride through the dark roads of crime. Each story has a different vibe and ends before you can guess what happened. In some places it is going to sweep you out of your feet with its climax. You can expect a fast paced mystery, well written plot and stories where criminal becomes victim.
Definitely, a 5 star rated book. Thanks to Random Things Tours for providing me an opportunity to be a part of the blog tour.

A nice collection of short stories from Rachel Amphlett some of which I'd actually read before. Particularly liked the introduction to Detective Kay Hunter in 'Nowhere To Run' having read the other books in the Kay Hunter series.

This is definitely the best crime anthology I have ever read and it is also one of my favourite books of all times!!! You SERIOUSLY have to grab your copy of this brilliant page turner today!! An addictive collection of 12 short stories filled with crime, humour, twists, secrets, mysteries, suspense, tension and absolutely everything you could ask for in a gripping page turner plus so very much more!!!!. As I always do with books of short stories or poems I will say a bit about them individually and then give an overall rating at the end. With regards to these stories Rachel has kindly included a short description of what each short story is about in her book so as she has worded them better I will quote what she states and add a few words to each story. These are the stories that are included in order, a short description of what they are about:
The Reckoning: The newest arrival at a care home for the elderly carries an air of mystery that even a jaded ex-WW2 Resistance fighter can't resist trying to solve. Then matters take a sinister turn. This was one of my favourites and I absolutely loved the unexpected ending! This short story is set over 7 short chapters. 5/5
A Grave Mistake: A walk in the woods takes a dark turn for Ben... Another brilliant story with an ending I was definitely not expecting!! At just 2 and a half pages this is one of the shortest stories.
The Beachcomber: Staying at a tiny guesthouse in Cornwall after the summer, Julie spends her days combing the beaches, looking for things to collect while hiding from her past. Then a storm breaks, and suddenly she's scared. Because you never know what might wash up on the beach.. Another great story with an unexpected ending which will keep you guessing and trying to work out who is hiding what. This one is set over 7 chapters and keeps you in suspense.

The Last Super: Larry's been the supervisor of the apartment block for as long as the ten-ants can remember. And he knows all their secrets... This story is set over five chapters and takes you into the life of Larry and his tenants. I absolutely adored Larry, definitely a landlord I would recommend!!
Something in the Air: When Amy boards her flight to Cairns, it's not by choice. Because it's not just the turbulence that's giving her cause for concern... This one is set over six chapters, set on a plane and builds up with suspense and you question what Amy is up to. Loved the twist at the end!
Special Delivery: All Jackson Dark wants to do is get home and surprise his wife with the special gift he's bought her... This one was quite humorous as well as having twists!! Must say that Jackson is more reliable than most of the delivery drivers I have dealt with!
A Pain in the Neck: Vanessa loves her job as a chiropractor, except sometimes her work takes an unexpected twist... Rachel sums this one up perfectly so I am not going to add anything hear apart from to say yet again another great short story!
The Last Days of Tony MacBride: Alan O'Reilly has known Tony MacBride since he was a young boy. Now he's helping to bury him... A brilliant story of loyalty, laughter and a brilliant twist at the end!
The Moment Before: After Ray Holden is told by his doctor that his stress levels are dangerously high, he decides to take drastic action...This is definitely one way to relieve stress although probably not recommended although to be fair Joe should have known better! Greed is an awful thing!
Nowhere to Run: When a series of vicious attacks leaves the local running community in shock and fear, newly qualified detective Kay Hunter is thrust into the middle of a fraught investigation.
Determined to make an impression on her first assignment with the murder team, and desperate to stop a cold-blooded murderer before another victim is taken, she may be in danger of risking it all before her career has even started. A killer is out hunting tonight, and Kay could be the next target... This is the longest of the stories and definitely my favourite one. I have read and loved several books in Rachel's Kay Hunter series and I loved meeting Kay again in this brilliant, gripping and suspense packed short story!!
An absolutely amazing collection of crime, twist, suspenseful and tension packed short stories each filled with action and PERFECT for fans of crime!!! A fantastic collection of short stories with an excellent range of situations, characters, locations and narratives. My favourites were definitely The Reckoning, The Last Days of Tony MacBride and Nowhere to Run. However, I actually loved each and every one which NEVER usually happens when it comes to short stories so it truly goes to show how brilliant a writer Rachel is for me to love every story, each completely different to the last!
These stories include crime, karma, humour, revenge, murder, red herrings, twists and so, so much more! There is a great mix of stories so there is definitely something in there for everyone. This book is ideal to be able to pick up and read a story during a break or while making a cuppa!! ! The excellent descriptions throughout ensures you are sucked into each story with each unique character and storyline! !!! The fact that these are short stories also allows you to pick it up and read a story at a time or read it in one sitting which is perfect for those who like to read multiple books at one time. Rachel has absolutely amazing writing skills and an incredible imagination and I cannot wait to read more of her books!!

As there are so many stories, I have picked out the ones that resonated with me the most. That’s not to say the others weren’t brilliant as well.
‘…your sin will find you out.’ Isn’t that what they say? In The Reckoning nonagenarian Evelyn arrives at the nursing for one night respite care, so she isn’t left alone at home. Sadie tends to her needs and hears all about Evelyn’s time during the war when she sang to the troops.
Alan Hendrick is a lovely old man, whom everyone adores. Apart from Roger Sanders that is, who seems to have a problem with him. But is it all as it seems, or is someone keeping secrets? My favourite out of all of them.
In The Man Cave Darren wakes up in a dark, dank cellar. He’s tied to a chair and has no food or water. He remembers being pushed down the stairs. No-one knows where he is, and his wife Tess is away for five days. What if no-one comes to rescue him? Maybe he can find a way to escape.
But who would keep him down there? It can’t be for the money, so who hates him enough? The twist at the end was totally shocking and unexpected.
A Dirty Business, recycling, (though my husband says I am so obsessed, I should work in a recycling centre rescuing the soft toys). Michael Hawkins has been doing it for years and his wife Lisa makes him take his clothes off at the door and have a shower before entering the rest of the house because he stinks. But when she asks him to ‘take out the trash’ it’s a step too far. And results in yet another argument.
Heather doesn’t seem to mind though. Their affair has been carrying on in secret for a while now. But for Lisa, recycling will take on a whole new meaning.
The Last Super – Larry has been the superintendent at the flats for seventeen years, nine months and four days. He has looked after his tenants, particularly elderly Brenda Friedman, the Bancrofts and twenty-something Melissa, but now the building is to be demolished and a new development put up. He’s going to miss his ‘old friends’. Larry can’t leave though. He’s hiding a secret that would tear one family apart. But as always, Larry will have a solution.

I love these short stories. The eagle eyed amongst you will know that I’ve already shared my thoughts on some of the stories, and you can read those review in full on the blog at your leisure. Case Files Volume 1 draws together some of the fine short stories in Rachel Amphlett’s catalogue into on handy book, perfect for the occasional nibble over your lunch break or, for the more voracious reader, devouring in one sitting.
Short sharp and always with an unexpected sting in the tail, these stories pulled me in from the start, the author quick to set up the premise of each tale. By their conclusion they all had me smiling for a variety of very different reasons. Be prepared for some real surprises as little as it appears on the surface.
Whilst we can guess from the fact these are crime shorts, something is going to go slightly awry, if not for the main characters in our micro journeys, then at the very least for someone who crosses their path. Rachel Amphlett is brilliant at establishing characters, and whilst some people can be out off by a short story, feeling as though you get little meat not he bones, Rachel Amphlett quickly dispels that fear. I felt like I had experienced a full story, packed with twists and each truly unique.
My favourites, it I had to choose would probably be The Last Super, a surprisingly heart warming tale, A Pain In The Neck where a spa visit takes a unexpected turn, Something in the Air which hasn’t helped my suspicion of air travel one bit, and Special Delivery, which made me smile for very personal reasons. That said, each story holds it’s own and there wasn’t a single one I didn’t enjoy.
If you like a short story, particularly a wonderfully sneaky crime themed one, then this is definitely a collection I can recommend.

A combination of short, edgy crime stories, and a few that are somewhat longer, (chapter-based), the final one featuring a trainee Detective Kay Hunter (who is featured a long-running book series).
With the author’s knack for writing atmospheric, twisty short stories, many of which contain clever and surprising endings, this reader was reminded of long-ago mystery serials, like Ellery Queen or Alfred Hitchcock mystery magazine (Note to self, must check - are they still in publication?) with the same nostalgic draw that makes one eager to read on, to turn the page, to begin another bite-sized, suspenseful read.
Without giving the plot(s) away (no spoilers here), favorites encountered in this compilation include:
A Grave Mistake- A tense and chilling read as our narrator, lost in the woods, late at night, comes upon a recently-dug grave, and quickly finds his troubles (and perhaps not those you would expect him to have) really begin.
A Dirty Business - Working in a garbage and recycling plant is a tough and dirty business, in more ways than the reader may imagine.
The Beachcomber - This longer short-story, featuring a mysterious scarred woman seeking refuge on the coast of Cornwall, has a gothic sort of feel to it, and a plot that will keep you both reading and guessing.

I’ve read this author a few times and really enjoyed her books and I do occasionally enjoy a short story anthology. This was one I really enjoyed. 12 stories all from the pen of Rachel Amphlett and all very enjoyable. Some are really very short whilst others have real chapters! A fabulous mix of crime drama and it’s hard to pick a favourite as they are all so good but I’ll give you a little taster of just three of them.
The Reckoning is set in an upmarket nursing/old peoples home and is a tale of retribution - I thoroughly enjoyed this one and thought the shocking ending was brilliant.
The Beachcomber is set in Cornwall where Julie is on holiday, spending her days collecting sea glass but something happens that brings back memories she has been suppressing - not what I expected.
The Last Days of Tony McBride is a very short story at the funeral of gangster/crime boss, a man who demanded loyalty above all - a shocking climax!
I’ve only recently found myself enjoying short stories and normally there are a few ‘duff’ ones in the book but not this time. This is a perfect book to take on holiday or when you want a quick read without leaving a story hanging. I’m already looking forward to Book 2. Good selection of different length short stories all with a crime element and all very enjoyable.

I do love a good short story. This collection offers up a variety of crime stories
The reckoning is a great story to start us off. The characters are war survivors but aren't quite telling it how it really was; for them at least! Evelyn seems out of sorts but her rest offers more than a bit of recuperation. It goes to show there's no time limit on seeking justice/revenge!!
We move on to see that not everyone is as well put together and you can't help but laugh at Ben in the 2nd story. Clearly not as well organised 😆
The Man Cave shows a little more organisation but I think Tess wished her husband wasn't so meticulous with his filing! Not quite a woman scorned but certainly one not to be messed with!!
The last days of Tony McBride offer up another tale of revenge that made me laugh. Crime shouldn't pay but loyalty is important and actions have consequences...
The final story shows the hazards of exercise 😬 safer to avoid running I think 🤣
Definitely enjoyed the little snippets of crime offered up in this. A mix of revenge, jealousy and plain old badness! All very different with characters showing different motivations for their deadly deeds.

Having loved many of this author's books already, I was really intrigued by these short story collections and to see whether they'd have the same impact as the full novels have had.
And...I can confirm that I absolutely loved every single one (so far...)
I absolutely love a good short story and appreciate that they are quite different in composition than writing a full novel sized story, so I loved that even with these shorter pieces, I could still get a sense of the writing that I'm used to - and still feel like I've read a well structured storyline.
Now, you're not drawing me down the path of choosing a favourite because I hate having to make decisions, especially when I really enjoyed them all and they all centered around my go to genre.
I know I read a lot and for lots of my waking hours - but I do struggle to pick up books whilst I'm eating and this is the perfect time for me to slot in some short stories.
I love that I can just settle down for lunch and devour a whole complete story and then put the book down and move on until the next day - without losing momentum.
Although this collection were all along a similar theme, I loved the variety that I still found through the stories.

This first book was so good. I loved the chance to have short, fast paced crime stories to really dig into. I often do not have the time available to dive right into a fully fleshed out crime read, and just want the chance to have that thrill and fear read. When I saw this, I knew it was perfect because I could get my crime read in short bursts, and not have that annoying feeling of waiting until I could return and hoping I remembered the wee details that end up being so important.
Each of these reads is different, but still based round case files stories that give you a good chance to read along and see if you have the wit to figure things out before you get to the final sentence. I really liked the collection and found it was a great book. I am really excited to read book two!

As a whole, this was such an easy read and a fantastic way to experience a variety of short crime stories without too much effort when I want something light but thoroughly engaging.
Although the stories vary in subject matter, their format is part of what made them work so well for me. Their short length forces each one to open with a strong hook and build quickly to a tense, satisfying twisty ending, creating maximum impact. With a very limited word count I was shocked at how Rachel was still able to build character development and have me rooting for particular characters. As a collection of short punchy stories, I have to say I really did enjoy them.

I love a short story and when you have a collection of twelve of the best crime mysteries penned by a brilliant story teller, you just know you’re in for a treat! There’s a mixture of themes in these tales, some quite short and others longer and spanning several chapters, but they all have a dark and chilling theme and were thoroughly engrossing. Perfect for dipping into, I loved Nowhere To Run, featuring very popular series detective Kay Hunter, but my absolute favourites were The Man Cave and The Reckoning. For me, you can’t beat a bit of long overdue revenge and retribution! I am definitely looking forward to the second volume of these gripping and very entertaining short case files.

I have read and enjoyed several of Amphlett's full length novels before now so I already had an appreciation for her writing style.

I loved how each story felt complete even though they were short it didn’t affect the writing or storytelling.

This was a really great collection of short crime fiction stories. Each story felt complete and unique and there wasn't one that I didn't like. Most of them took no longer than 5 minutes to read, making it a perfect book to pick up when I was short on time.
I really enjoyed The Reckoning with its links to Nazism and World War 2. I think that was possibly my favourite. I also enjoyed The last Super, and found the ending really sad.
Overall this was a fab little read. Short stories can so often feel incomplete, but these didn't.

Showed some promise in the beginning.
There’s definitely an art to short-story writing (and flash fiction for that matter) which is not a given for the novelist. Some of the earlier shorts in this collection were “readable” to pass the time but nothing more than that really. This is the second short story collection by a popular author of novels that i have read this month and I can’t help thinking that perhaps those authors should stick to their stock-in-trade.

I really enjoyed these short stories, the authors writing style is really atmospheric and I will definitely be catching up on the Kay Hunter series
