When Bex Band started an online community, Love Her Wild, she positively changed her life and the lives of many others in ways she could never have imagined. That click of the mouse was the best thing she ever did!
Love Her Wild is now one of the biggest outdoor communities in the world, winning multiple awards, receiving international recognition, and taking thousands of women on adventures. Bex Band also made a dream career for herself in the process—running a community built on passion and a drive to make a difference.
Gather is the book Bex wishes she had with her when she clicked that create button. Building an online community is an incredible journey, but a very challenging and lonely one at times. This guide will help you navigate the bumpy road ahead, encouraging you to lay down a launch blueprint, drive new members to your community and keep them engaged, market effectively, and learn how to monetize and build a career for yourself doing what you love.

Full disclosure here - I'm Bex's mum so am unlikely to give her book a bad review. That said, I'm a qualified librarian and review books for several publications so try to be honest in my reviews even when I know the author. I keep in mind the target audience when I'm reading and reviewing a book plus I'm fully aware that some books that people love others hate so all reviews are subjective to a certain extent.
I'm used to reading Bex's blogs and her open, honest and relaxed way of writing comes through in Gather. It's a mix of her personal story - how she set up Love Her Wild and grew it into such a huge and influential online community that now has regular events and activities throughout the country - as well as information and tips for anyone thinking of doing something similar or already running a community that wants to build it into something more. Each chapter covers a specific topic, such as communicating with your community or supporting your volunteers, and there are case studies from others who have set up successful online communities to illustrate these points.
An interesting, inspiring and informative read. Although I don't run an online community, I'm involved with several voluntary groups and found myself thinking about how I could put into practice the strategies and tips covered in this book. If you do run a community then you'll find the book invaluable. I'm also going to checkout some on the featured case studies; I've never heard of the Cloud Appreciation Society - it sounds fascinating!
This book was a wonderful look into building a community. Both a clear and practical book of advice and tips for the reader to action when building their own community, but also an enjoyable read full of personal anecdotes, experience and wisdom that helps you to connect with the author and her experience of community building. She also includes experience and testimonies from other community builders - I particularly enjoyed hearing the success of the cloud appreciation society! Who knew that was a thing, but sounds like their members really value them. I also enjoyed the amount of focus in the book on self care and personal resilience. A really all encompassing and delightful read if you are interested in building community.
