We all desire to obtain the marvelous blessings promised by a loving God to His faithful children. In that quest, it is essential to understand what has been taught in the scriptures and by Church leaders about God's patterns and promises regarding the blessings of heaven. What of those who feel the promised blessings are out of reach; that God has somehow let them down? Or those who feel that life is not unfolding in the way they had hoped or thought they had been promised; that God's plan for them is not working? What are they to understand about what God has yet in store for them? In Divine Patterns , best-selling author Roger Connors seeks to reinforce, restore, and revitalize our faith in God's promises by helping us better understand the gospel principles underpinning our efforts to seek His blessings. As we increase our understanding of God's divine patterns, we will better know what we can do to enjoy every blessing our Father in Heaven has waiting for us. We will also be strengthened with patience and hope as we look forward to the day that seemingly withheld blessings are eventually granted, trusting that the Lord can and will fulfill all of His promises.
There are divine patterns if you know where to look for them. The author has a way of drawing you into the book, by sharing personal stories, to apply the principles taught. This is a book I will be reading again.
This book had some beautiful stories and insights. For example, I really like what Roger Connors says about repentance. He tells a story of having joints in his shoulders replaced after cancer ate away at the joints. The process with one of his shoulders had been painful and he was dreading having the other shoulder surgery. While in the temple, the voice of the Lord came to him and this is the thought he had, "This is not a problem, this is a solution." These words were profound to him and caused him to think differently about what was happening. He knew the road ahead would be painful and take a lot of work, but the ultimate result would be blessings. And that is what happened. He now has full mobility and is very active. He took that story and went on to explain that this insight is a great way to think about the principle of repentance. Repentance is not a problem, it's a solution. Our understanding and belief in the importance of personal repentance needs to be rooted in the idea that this is a positive, powerful step towards solutions, not rooted in problems, but rooted in the hope for a better future. Repentance is how we obtain forgiveness, and how we come unto Christ.
I really liked this book. It was interesting and needed and in-depth and overwhelming. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because there's so much information in the book you almost walk away not being able to hold on to some specific information. But I feel bad doing that, cuz it's a great book and incredibly researched and I think it speaks volumes of truth. So really I would give it five stars for information and truth, but four stars because there's so much it's a little overwhelming and hard to really focus in and walk away with some things to work on. It's not hard to read, it's not heavy-handed, there's just so many different patterns of blessing and obedience that can be observed. I definitely think this is kind of a must read for people who are struggling with why me or why are they being blessed, I also think it's great for people who are trying to understand our heavenly Father a little bit more and how he does things. It's just a really good book
This book is very similar to Gerald Lund's book Divine Signatures, but the author adds his own personal experiences and vulnerability about seeking the blessings of heaven that is very compelling.
I listened to the audio book and loved it. I enjoyed it so much, I now want to buy the physical copy to own it as a reference book to underline favorite passages and quotes. It is so uplifting and hopeful. I strongly recommend it.
The author of this insightful book, Roger Connors, is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-selling author who consults with organizations around the world to improve performance and leadership. You might say this book is about leadership of one's self--focusing on the patterns and practices that are most successful to bring one peace, direction, and joy in your individual life.
Two of the best messages, at least for me, in this book are: 1) by and large, the blessings we receive in life are not random, but are granted through God's mercy because we are actively seeking Him; and 2) even when it seems like God is absent and not granting the blessings we seek, He is always aware of us and will always answer us, in His own time and way.
I love the quote from Jeffrey R. Holland that Connors includes in the book's opening chapter:
"There will be times in our lives when even our best spiritual effort and earnest, pleading prayers do not yield the victories for which we have yearned . . . So, while we work and wait together for the answers to some of our prayers, I offer you my apostolic promise that they are heard and they are answered, though perhaps not at the time or in the way we wanted. But they are always answered at the time and in the way an omniscient and eternally compassionate parent should answer them. My beloved brothers and sisters, please understand that He who never sleeps nor slumbers cares for the happiness and ultimate exaltation of His children above all else that a divine being has to do. He is pure love, gloriously personified, and Merciful Father is His name."
This book offers some practical, and insightful, thoughts on how to draw closer to God, especially when life is difficult, and I recommend it. As Connors says in his conclusion: "For those who have come to believe that God is deaf and distant, that blessings have been delayed, withheld, or even altogether denied, perhaps a word or two in this book has given you renewed hope."
I have to be honest- I started this book and immediately thought “oh great.. this is going to be long and boring.. and filled with too much information.” I know that isn’t great to start out that way but I say it because this quickly changed. If I really focused.. the knowledge I have gained has already opened my eyes to patterns in my day-to-day. There are many personal insights I have received through feeling the spirit testify many of the truths contained in this book on the divine patterns in my own life. When I would put this book down and go to pick it up again I would initially fall back to those feelings of “ah no.. here we go again” of not going to have my attention hooked but I would always feel differently after a few pages. This book spoke to me and I have already found myself quoting parts or explaining concepts to others dealing with incredibly hard challenges. This is well researched and thought out and one that I will be drawing on more for myself and in trying to strengthen others too. That is a sign of a good book-when after you read it (or during too!) you find yourself sharing what you are learning or have learned with others. This book did it for me. 4.5 stars rounded up (not giving it the full 5 just because it is soooo much info that without a physical copy it can be overwhelming and too much at once).
Roger Connors is a personal mentor and friend, so I’m biased, but taking principles he has taught in the business world and adding the fullness of the gospel is powerful. The chapters are quick and packed with personal stories that reinforce the divine patterns in how we bring God’s power and blessings into our life. I loved this book and I’m grateful Roger wrote it.
It's good. It is kind of a classic approach to understanding Divine or gospel logic. It is a shotgun approach to understanding principles of the gospel through straightforward doctrinal and practical use.
This book had very good doctrinal material and some very spiritual examples. Besides the first couple chapters, I couldn’t see how the other chapters related to the theme of divine patterns. I really wish that had been made more clear.
Excellent book. I listened to it and loved the author's tone of voice and how he read it. It gave a lot of food for thought in how revelation works differently in all our lives. Coming unto Christ is truly a life-long process in recognizing how God works in our lives to make us better.
I thought that this was a wonderful book. Very well written, really informative and very readable. The author makes liberal use of personal experiences, church talks and other church information to really create a very good book. Very much worth a second read..
Awesome book. Helps you see the big picture better. Looking for divine patterns in the way the Lord works brings better understanding about things like prayers that seem unanswered or revelation that seems silent. The author is engaging and has good personal stories.
I can't say enough about this book! It was so inspiring! Highly recommend it for both those who are strong in their faith and particularly for those who have questions and struggle to feel God's love in their lives.
This was a great book that highlighted some of the ways we can recognize God’s hand in our lives. He is a great storyteller. He talks about the hard aspects of life and how sometimes looking back you can see the wisdom in the suffering. Great book! 4.5 stars!
I’m so glad to have listened to this on the Deseret Book app. There were many thought provoking comments such as, If you are doing your part to follow the Savior, you will be guided whether you know it or not. 🩷 Beautiful book.
Wow! Initially, I thought maybe this wasn't something I needed to hear but there are so many topics covered in this book and I'll have to go back and review one chapter in particular.
I read this every Sunday during Sacrament, so it took me 6 months to finish. Great read. Thoughtful, well-written and accessible. Connects is a good story teller. Really enjoyed this read
This book is phenomenal! So many positive and helpful stories, examples of pushing through hard trials. Great scriptural references for everyday things.
Connors describes the patterns found in the Scriptures for obtaining blessings from God. I found this to be a very interesting book, a book well worth my time to read.
This is the best book I have read in long time. I plan on sharing it with my friends. It was so inspiring and yet down to earth with his experiences with his family and associates.
