Detective Dan Riley #6

The Lie in Our Marriage

Rate this book
On a warm spring evening, guests gather in a perfectly manicured garden to celebrate Maggie and Len’s twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Maggie leans against the apple tree in the sprawling grounds of her beautiful home. She watches her fun-loving husband and darling children and her heart swells with pride. As the joyful party atmosphere disappears into the night, close by, the lifeless body of a young woman is pulled from a river.

Slipping upstairs to find the special gift she’s made for her adoring husband, Maggie stumbles across something else hidden amongst the dusty boxes of once-loved toys and family keepsakes…

A silky pink scarf printed with tiny black skeletons that doesn’t belong to her. She holds it up to her face, breaths in the sweet sickly perfume, its scent familiar, and tendrils of fear snake through her body. The scarf is stained with splashes of blood.

But as Maggie hurries to rejoin the party and pour herself a glass of champagne to toast the man she’s enjoyed decades of happy marriage with, she catches a news flash of the local girl’s murder. She stares at the girl with the beautiful face, long ice-blonde hair and, draped loosely around her neck, Maggie recognises it instantly. She’s wearing the scarf.

Detective Dan Riley #6

Well, I started off enjoying the book, but my interest waned. This was my first in the series of six. The chapters are told in Maggie's and Detective Dan's POV.

I liked Maggie's character, but her husband Len really annoyed me. His pet name for her was "my little chickadee" and I cringed every single time he said it, which was often! He even calls his daughter "sweetie chops" (please stop).

Maggie finds something in her attic and it opens Pandora's Box so to speak and she goes down the omg, what does this mean rabbit hole.

The book was heavy on sex themes (in my opinion) and the case involved an influencer, pornography, webcams, and lots of second guessing by Maggie.

The pace felt pretty slow and seemed to stall several times. Other than Maggie, I didn't care for the cast. This is a popular series so check out other reviews. This one was not the best match for me.

4 rounded up to 4.5.

During the party to celebrate her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, Maggie Wendover climbs the ladder to her loft to retrieve the special surprise she has planned for her beloved husband Len. While there, she finds something so shocking that it has her questioning Len’s love for her – and their, up-until-now, picture perfect marriage.

I think I’ll leave it there, as I went into this one blind, and don’t regret it. The Lie in Our Marriage is the sixth book in the Detective Dan Riley domestic thriller/police procedural series, and can be read as a standalone, although there were small spoilers pertaining to Dan’s background and home-life. Having read, and enjoyed, two previous books in the series, The Couple on Cedar Close (#2) and The Stranger’s Wife (#3), which were both as twisty as a corkscrew, I gleefully prepared myself for what was to come. So, I was quite disappointed when I thought I had it all worked out fairly early on. However, I should have had more faith in Anna-Lou Weatherley’s ability to surprise me, as the part I had guessed correctly wasn’t the biggest shock. Also, that last line gave me chills.

The amount of emotion I felt during this book also really surprised me, as I don’t normally feel sorry for character’s in marriage noir due to their unreliable, untrustworthy nature, but I really grew attached to Maggie. This one was an easy-to-follow, quick read, perfect for when you’re busy, or on the move. I own book one, and will definitely be adding instalments #4 and #5 to my tbr. This is a reliable series, and Anna-Lou Weatherley always manages to drop bombshell after bombshell. Check out her books!

I’d like to thank Netgalley UK, Bookouture, and Anna-Lou Weatherley for the e-ARC.

A twist filled gripping book which worked perfectly as a stand-alone for me! The twists kept me on my toes and fully engaged. This book left me wondering how/why I have not read this series before? I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will find time to read the previous books in the series.

What began as a beautiful evening as Maggie and Len celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, ended in tragedy for others. Maggie was so happy. She was surrounded by friends and family and married to a man she loved. But across town, the body of a young woman has been spotted by a dog walker and pulled from a river.

Looking for the gift she made for her husband, Maggie discovers a pink scarf that was not there the day before. The scarf is scented with perfume - one she recognizes but can't quite place. But it's not the perfume that is the most shocking - it is the splashes of blood on the scarf.

Maggie catches a news flash on the television about the murder of a beautiful local girl who just happened to be wearing a scarf that looks just like the scarf Maggie found in her home!

This was a gripping, twist filled read in which a woman has doubts. What happens when you jump to conclusions, when doubt and suspicion consume you? I enjoyed how this played out in the book. I also enjoyed the hunt for the killer. I thought this book had the perfect amount of investigation and domestic drama. The mystery of who killed the young woman was intriguing and just when I thought I had things figured out, I had the rug pulled out from under me.

Shocking, gripping, twist filled and well written.

The lie in our marriage has it all. A killer plot made for keeping you up at night and tensing your shoulders.

On a warm spring evening, guests gather in a perfectly manicured garden to celebrate Maggie and Len’s twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Maggie leans against the apple tree, watching her fun-loving husband and darling children as her heart swells with pride. As the joyful party atmosphere disappears into the night, close by, the lifeless body of a young woman is pulled from a river.

Slipping upstairs to find the special gift for her adoring husband, Maggie stumbles across something else hidden amongst the dusty boxes of family keepsakes…

A printed pink silky scarf that doesn’t belong to her. She holds it up to her face, breaths in the sweet sickly perfume, it’s scent familiar, and tendrils of fear snake through her body. The scarf is stained with blood.

Already from the get-go you’re invited into what you know will be a thrilling read. The paranoia is suffocating and it’s impossible to not be tainted by it. You’re engrossed whether you want to or not.

I liked Anna -Lou’s writing style. The detective’s chapter were especially noteworthy. Packed with surprising and pleasing metaphors combined with my type of humor made it an engaging read. Dan would for sure get a confession out of me! I found myself chuckling from his way of thinking and talking, which is a rare occurrence in most thrillers.

If you like books that moves you, this might just be it. Maggie’s pain is described in a way that resonates with you. You can almost taste the desperation and dread after new terrifying discoveries. And then BAM! You’re hit by a car midway in the book, feeling shellshocked. You forgive the somewhat too perfect timing, because it makes you rethink what you suspected. And when all is revealed, you realize there were many hints sprinkled here and there . Even if it’s hard to imagine that something like this can happen in real life, it seems plausible since the motive makes sense.

I thoroughly enjoyed the lie in our marriage and has already bought the first book in the series.

*The Scarf*

A seemingly happy couple Maggie & Len with his annoying nickname for her “chickadee” are celebrating their silver wedding anniversary. They have friends round and all is going well until Maggie pops into the loft to retrieve a gift she has for Len. She stumbles across a scarf that does not belong to her. The perfume scent is not hers and there looks like stains of blood on it.

In her head Len must be having an affair and as her mind is reeling the body of a murdered young woman has been found. In her photo she is wearing the identical scarf that is in the loft.

What does Maggie do, she keeps it to herself but little does she know the identity of the murderer is not who she thought and the whole story is about to be picked apart by DCI Dan Riley and his team.

By the end of the story the scarf will be the thing that haunts her as she has become blinkered and by not confronting what she first thought there will be a rude awakening for her

A tense read that I found myself questioning her actions, but I just love Dan and his infamous gut, the way it may not make sense to others and even to himself but he is seldom wrong…..

4.5 stars!

Another amazing instalment in this series!

Dan Riley is my most favourite police detective ever! It was so great to be back on a new case with him. The crime was unique and relevant and kept me guessing. As with all the books, the suspense and tension was palpable.

Detective Riley’s personal life wasn’t as big of a focus in this book (or the last) but I still really enjoyed the glimpses into his family life and his fathers wisdoms that he hears leading him through his work.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys British police procedurals. I have rated all of the books in the series 4+ stars or higher. Can’t wait to dive into the next novel in the series.

Audio rating: 5 stars! The audio narrator is INCREDIBLE and greatly enhances my connection to this series. He adds the perfect amount of charm to the narrative. I could listen to him talk all day.

Another twisty, hard to put down read from Anna-Lou Weatherly. I have read all the books in this series and have loved them all. Now while this is billed as a series, all of them can easily be read as stand alone books. The recurring character of the detective is the thing that links them.

This time he is hunting down the killer of a beautiful, 22 year old Instagram model/influencer who has been found in a river. Everybody loved Angel, so why would anyone kill her. And what does this have to do with Maggie and Len, who are at the same time, celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary? Well you will have o read it to find out.

We hear the story from both Dan and Maggie, and get an understanding of what the police are looking at and what Maggie is thinking . There are, as always, plenty of secrets, lies and assumptions and it all leads to the thrilling ending.

Thanks again to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy to read. The Lie in Our Marriage is published January 18th.

"The Lie in Our Marriage" is the sixth book in Anna Lou Weatherley's Detective Dan" series.

Even though it is the sixth book in the series, it is a standalone read.

The book's premise was intriguing:
A gorgeous Instagram model is murdered and there is no shortage of suspects.

Unbeknownst to the police, a wife finds the model's scarf hidden in her attic and suspects her husband of infidelity and the model's murder.

Anna Lou Weatherley is one of my go-to authors and I have eagerly and enthusiastically devoured all of her intricately plotted and unputdownable "Detective Dan" books with vigor.

IMHO, the first five "Detective Dan" books were brilliant police procedurals with compelling characterizations.

NO LIES:
"The Lie in Our Marriage" fell flat for me.

WHY:
1) "The Lie In Our Marriage" was much slower-paced than the author's earlier books
2) I am not a fan of books with pornography and sex videos of influencers.

I listened to the audiobook read by James Lailey.

James Lailey has narrated all books in the series and he does an outstanding job with the narration.

2.5 stars, rounded up.

Maggie and Len are having their 25th wedding anniversary party. Maggie goes upstairs and finds a designer scarf that has dried blood splotches but leaves it there. Later on a dead girls nude body is pulled from the river. Detectives Dan Riley and Lucy Davis investigate the case. Assumptions are made and lives destroyed. There were many wild twists and turns. This was an awesome read and kept me flipping the pages. Can’t wait to read more books by this author!

I have previously enjoyed this series but I didn’t like this one much. It’s very slow, repetitive, too long and some dialogue is so bad. And. Does anyone actually say ‘chickadee’ other than in old movies??? Jeez.

Detective Dan Riley Series #6

The truth is, your child never stops being your child. No matter their age, no matter where they are in the journey of life. They always remain your child."

The lifeless body of a young woman is pulled from a river. She was someone's loving daughter, trusted friend, and a popular internet personality.

At the same time, Maggie Wendover, finds a silky pink scarf that doesn’t belong to her in her attic. She holds it up to her face, breaths in the sweet, sickly perfume, and tendrils of fear snake through her body. The scarf is stained with splashes of blood.

Maggie makes her way downstairs and catches a news flash of the local girl’s murder on her television. She stares at the girl with a beautiful face, long ice-blonde hair, and, draped loosely around her neck, Maggie recognises it instantly. She’s wearing the scarf Maggie has just found in her home.

With a myriad of thoughts going through her head, Maggie deduces that her husband of twenty-five years must be the killer. But why? And at what lengths will Maggie go to protect him?

‐‐---------‐------------------------------------------------------------

This is the last installment of the Detective Dan Riley Series. Oh, how I have enjoyed these audiobooks, narrated by James Lailey! I highly recommend this series as each one is very different from the other. The reader also gets to know the main character, Detective Dan Riley, in his personal and professional life throughout the years. They really are a treat! 💞

This story is told from Maggie and Dan's perspectives. This well written story id filled with red herrings. It's intricately woven and filled with secrets and lies. I was gripped from the first chapter. The story is current with all the social media platforms and current tv shows. The pace is slow to begin with. There are parts that are quite predictable. The characters have been well fleshed out. This is a great addition to the Dan Riley series. This book could be read as a standalone.

Maggie and Len are celebrating their twenty fifth wedding anniversary. What starts out as a happy celebration turns into an evening filled with mystery for Maggie. The body of a young woman is pulled from a river nearby. Maggie finds a woman's keepsake in her home that doesn't belong to her or her daughter and she begins to wonder if she does have the happy marriage she is celebrating.

As the story goes along the mystery deepens and secrets are uncovered. The author weaves some clever twists with a suspenseful ending that kept me turning the pages until the last word.

Definitely a new go-to author for me and I look forward to delving into her backlist.

Maggie and Len are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary with their friends and neighbours.

When Maggie goes into the loft to retrieve a surprise for Len she discovers something hidden amongst their dusty boxes of memorabilia. A silky pink scarf, she recognises the sickly perfume, but why has the scarf got dried blood on it!!

This was a great twist filled read that kept me gripped throughout.

The 1st book I've read in this series, but I will definitely be reading the other books.

This was my first book by this author, and I will be looking for more. This story is riveting and full of truths, lies and the unexpected.
Maggie and Len have a house full of people celebrating their 25th anniversary. Maggie has been making a slideshow of their life together, and when she retrieves the laptop, hidden away in the attic she discovers a bloody scarf reeked with perfume.
Later that night a young women is pulled from the river. She is found naked! The news flash on the TV shows images of the women including one where she wears a scarf, which looks exactly like the one she found. No one uses the loft except her and her husband. Her daughter has been away at school and her son lives with his girlfriend.
Maggie’s husband of 25 years is the kindest man and well respected, but she starts to wonder if she really knew him at all. This story shows us that one little lie can escalate and the consequences can be profound, even deadly.

I was really enjoying this book and then it felt like it was dragging about 2/3s in. I don’t know why I’m enjoying this series but disliking this series so much at the same time 😂 I will admit I am glad I’m about to start the final book, because it means hopefully next time it will be a 5* series but at the same time I can’t pinpoint why I feel like this as I have enjoyed the books, I just think when you read the same genre you have a high bar of which you are comparing other books too 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wow, this book was really good!! I enjoyed it from start to finish! Maggie went through a whirlwind of situations and emotions in this. I couldn't imagine being in her shoes. First, with Len, then later with Len and also with her daughter. All of it starts with a mere silky pink scarf. Definitely recommend this!

I don't know how I would react in a situation that Maggie found herself in. Personally, I thought it was a little weird, her reaction, but maybe that would have happened. Family first and all that. That being said, I still did not like Maggie as a character. She jumped to conclusions right away and avoided what really needed to be done. The detective side of this book fell flat for me, they were not engaging as characters.

Of the 7 Dan Riley audible books I’ve listened to this one is my least favorite. The wife/mother really frustrated me throughout the story. The constant thoughts about her pelvic floor. Her constant whining about her husband. I just found the entire story line frustrating.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for a complimentary copy of this book! Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Maggie and Len have been happily married for 25 years. Maggie heads upstairs to grab a special gift for Len, but while doing so, finds a pink designer scarf stained with blood. Not sure whose it is or what to do with it, she leaves it there. But the perfume scent coming from it smells slightly familiar. A neighbor of theirs uses that exact same scent! Soon, news reports come in that a young woman’s body has been found near a river in their area. As news broadcasts continue, pictures of the young woman are shown and in one particular picture she is wearing the exact same pink scarf Maggie had found in their house. Paranoia sets in for Maggie as she finds porn sites in her husband’s laptop, along with a video of the deceased woman and online searches for how to dispose of a dead body!
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I loved the fact that it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time!!!I couldn’t wait to see how the story played out! This book is number six in the Detective Dan Riley series. I will definitely be going back to read the other books in the series!!! One lesson this book shows you is to never make assumptions! You never know whose life or lives may be destroyed in doing so!

The Lie in Our Marriage is the best thriller I've read this year! Wow, what a fantastic book. This is my first book by Anna Lou Weatherley but I look forward to reading lots more by her. The book starts out with Maggie and Len celebrating their 25th anniversary by having a huge party with music, caterers, open bar, and lots of family and friends at their house. Maggie's big gift to Len is a slideshow she's put together on her laptop of the many memories they've shared through the years. She has hidden the laptop in the eaves of the attic. When Maggie goes to get the laptop, she reaches into the eaves, and touches something different. When she pulls it out it's a woman's scarf that has a very strong perfume smell. The scarf is bright pink with little black skulls all over it. Maggie notices there's dark spots on the scarf that look like blood!! What is this scarf doing here and who put it here? Maggie was just up here yesterday and knows that this had to be placed here very recently. Maggie puts it back and pulls out her laptop as she has to get back to the party.

Len makes a heartfelt speech to the crowd about Maggie and their years together. It's a wonderful speech that includes funny stories as well as sentimental ones. Maggie sets up her laptop for her slideshow surprise and it's a big hit. Sometime during the evening, people are talking and gasping inside at the tv. A news show has reported that a body of a young woman has been pulled out of the nearby river. Maggie and Len's son arrives late to the party because of all the police investigation. When Maggie goes inside by the tv, she is shocked at the news. Once the woman's family is notified, they show pictures of her and list her name on tv. Maggie is watching when she sees a photo of the young woman wearing the same scarf she found earlier in the attic!!!! Maggie and Len are the only people that use the attic as her son lives with his pregnant girlfriend and their daughter lives away at college. Could someone else have come up to the attic during the party? Why would that young woman's scarf be in Maggie's attic?

Len is restoring an old Cadillac that he bought and had delivered a few weeks ago. He works in the garage for hours on end working on his latest car restoration. His brother, Bob, helps him when he has time. One of Maggie's neighbors is wearing the same perfume as the scarf and she's always flirting with Len. Could they be having an affair? Could this scarf be hers? Can you really know someone even after living with them for 25 years? Maggie sure thought so. Was she right?

I can't recommend The Lie in Our Marriage enough. If you love a good thriller filled with suspense and twists throughout, don't hesitate to read this book! I did not see the murderer in this one coming! I love books that keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing. This book does both and you'll race to the end of the book to find out the truth. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of The Lie in Our Marriage in exchange for a fair review. #TheLieinOurMarriage

Book 6 in the Detective Dan Riley series and this is another excellent read. Right from the first page I was completely gripped and knew this was going to be a complete page turner. Detective Riley and his team are trying to find the killer of a twenty something beautiful social media influencer. The night her body was discovered Maggie Wendover was having a party at her house with her husband Len, family and friends. What, if anything have this family got to do with this case Detective Riley is trying to solve. This book will have you engrossed right from the start with plenty of twists and turns throughout.

Do love Dan Riley and in this book I loved the way he went out of his way to help someone he didn't have to. This was a plot I never saw coming and the author did a great job of only revealing the who and how when she wanted to. This one will keep you second guessing and like me, you probably won't have a clue either. Very, very clever! Well done Anna-Lou Weatherley. I was well and truly hood-winked with this one.
