After a brief hiatus, it was a real pleasure to get back to this exciting recent series. The central character is mortuary technician Cassie Raven who favours goth fashion and lives on a houseboat with her cat Macavity. She is still having to deal with being reunited with her father Callum who was falsely imprisoned for 17 years for murdering Cassie’s mother. The occasional meals at her Polish grandmother’s house can, at times, become a bit uncomfortable.
Early one morning Cassie finds the dead body of a man floating near her boat and is determined to discover his identity. This discovery, once again, brings her into contact with Detective Sergeant Phyllida Flyte, with whom she has a somewhat strained relationship. Phyllida too has her problems, both personal (her failed marriage and stillborn daughter Poppy) and professional, and, once the body is identified, the professional problems take a sinister turn. In the end, Cassie and Phyllida have to put their differences aside to bring the case to a proper resolution.
The descriptions of the various cityscapes of the Camden/Hampstead area of London are very evocative and in Cassie and Phyllida we have a couple of well-described and unique protagonists. If anything, this, the third book in the series, with its well constructed storyline, brilliant social observations and thrilling finale is the best so far

Slower than usual, this book aims at the understanding of Cassie’s life and angst and not so much on the crime itself, actually the crime help us understand Flyte and her reservations towards Cassie. Well written and researched, it is a wonderful story full of awesome plots and equally riveting sub-plots.
This is a pure character driven story, if you are looking for constant thriller action (although it has some) try other books. The series that is rich in Camden’s life and Polish culture is different in a very wonderful way with a heroine like no other.
I am a fan of this series and I’m equally looking forward for the next installment.

Cassie Raven heeft in haar dagelijkse werk in het mortuarium vele stoffelijk overschotten gezien, maar wanneer een verdronken man tegen de romp van haar woonboot botst, komt dat haar een beetje te dichtbij.
Brigadier Phyllida Flyte denkt de naamloze man te herkennen en zet haar beste beentje voor om zijn identiteit te achterhalen. Omdat ze haar collega’s niet kan vertrouwen, wendt een wanhopige Flyte zich tot Cassie voor hulp.
Samen zullen Cassie en Flyte fatale geheimen opdiepen – geheimen die Flyte niet kan laten rusten. In het beste geval zet ze haar carrière op het spel; in het slechtste geval moet ze het zelf met de dood bekopen.
'Hoofdzaak' is het derde deel van de serie met Cassie Raven in de hoofdrol en ook deze keer begint het verhaal meteen goed. Cassie ontdekt namelijk dag er een dood lichaam tegen de romp van haar woonboot botst en het betreft een onbekende man.
Vervolgens lees je dan steeds hoofdstukken vanuit Cassie en brigadier Flyte. Zo lees je over de persoonlijke dingen die Cassie heeft meegemaakt en haar gebeurtenissen op het werk. En nu is er dan opeens deze onbekende man. Cassie hoopt erachter te komen wie hij is en wat hem is overkomen.
Ik raad je aan om de voorgaande delen te lezen, mede omdat je dan meer over de achtergrond van Cassie komt te weten en natuurlijk is het ook altijd handig als je ook wat meer over de andere terugkerende peronages weet.
Dit deel leest ook weer prettig, ondanks dat het niet heel erg spannend wordt. Hier en daar voelde het soms wat traag aan, maat toch vind ik de delen van deze auteur steeds beter worden.
Er spelen zich een heleboel mysterieuze dingen af en lange tijd weet je dan ook niet wie deze man is en hoe hij aan zijn eind is gekomen.
De schrijfstijl is vlot en het verhaal las prettig omdat ik Cassie een heel erg interessant personage vind. Ook was de samenwerking tussen Cassie en Flyte interessant om te volgen.
Ik kijk zeker enorm uit naar het vierde deel en ik wil @amboanthos dan ook heel erg bedanken voor het recensie-exemplaar!

You would not believe the little dance and squeal of excitement I gave when this landed in my emails! I fell in love with this series from the very first chapter of Body Language and recommend it to everyone!
This is a series that continuously feels fresh and unique and the 3rd book in the series does not disappoint.
Cassie Raven is a mortuary assistant with a difference, she has this special affinity with the dead and feels she can communicate with them but sadly this special gift seems to have left her recently, resulting in Cassie losing the love of what she does.
Cassie isn't your usual Assistant, if there is a normal. A goth with a love for the macabre, she has lived a troubled life but with the help of a mentor she turned her life around and now feels comfortable with the more impoverished and 'unseen' people of the world.
Cassie is woken by a constant knocking on the hull of her boat/home. Deciding to investigate she finds a body, face down in the water. Once removed and in the mortuary it's a shock to find that the body is more decomposed than what it should be, the factors don't line up and Cassie is left wondering how and why this has happened, until a chance conversation sparks something in her brain that could give her the answer.
Once again we see her working alongside conventional Police Officer Phyllida Flyte, a relationship that is often fraught but also heartwarming at the same time. I really enjoyed the progression of their relationship in this installment and the friendship that has slowly grown over time.
Alongside the investigation, Cassie is also struggling with having her father back in her life after his release from prison for a crime he didn't commit *no spoilers*. Cassie has always been in a bubble with her grandmother, who raised her and now has to try and juggle another person in her group.
Phylidda is also struggling with her own personal issues that at times are all encompassing. Can they both put these issues aside and work together?
I love the authenticity of this series and its evident the amount of research that has gone into it.
**I urge anyone who hasn't yet read the first two books in this series (have you been under a rock?) to stop whatever you are doing and download them now!**

Tempo waarmee ik het boek gelezen heb, komt overeen met de snelheid van het boek. De plot zit goed in elkaar en komt ook op het einde volledig tot zijn recht.
Cassie en Flyte blijven als hoofd personages 2 magneten die elkaar ene moment afstoten en andere moment weer aantrekken. Fijn om telkens iets meer te weten te komen over hun verleden en hoe ze denken.
Heb dit boek heel graag gelezen en kan het zeker aanraden aan zij die een vlot lezende, maar toch geen te complexe, thriller willen lezen. Prima leesvoer op een druilerige regendag 😊
Cassie en Flyte blijven als hoofd personages 2 magneten die elkaar ene moment afstoten en andere moment weer aantrekken. Fijn om telkens iets meer te weten te komen over hun verleden en hoe ze denken.

Loved the scene with the magpie, loved the central mystery, loved both Cassie and the detective and their personal lives and struggles even more. But ugh, what a wall-climber of an ending!

This is a great crime thriller.
Cassie is a mortuary assistant but always seems to get drawn into murder investigations as she wants to do right by the victim and find their killer.
A body literally comes to her, as a dead man is found floating near her canal boat.
Cassie has always had a special connection with the dead and used to get thoughts from them but this seems to have stopped.
She still knows somehow that the man was murdered and helps Detective Flyte with the investigation.
Another man is soon found dead and Flyte is determined to find out who the killer is.
This is a great crime thriller that I really enjoyed.

I was so excited when I found out there was a third book in this quirky series. I absolutely loved the first two and couldn't wait to find out what was in store for this one.
This is the third book in the Cassie Raven series. While it can be read as a standalone, I would highly recommend reading the first two. 1) because they're fantastic books and 2), some storylines carryover from the previous books.
A body floats up against Cassie's canal boat and is initially written off as a drunk who fell into the canal. Try as she might, she can't get the unidentified man out of her head, nor can DS Flyte. As they investigate, they realise there's a ruthless killer on the loose hell bent on protecting their secrets.
Poor Cassie is really going through it. Her whole life seems to have been turned upside down since the last book. She's really struggling and trying to ignore her problems. The biggest change is the disappearance of her gift of being able to hear thoughts from the dead, which sends her into such a tailspin. I thought for most of the book she wouldn't be able to get past it and recover.
Flyte has moved teams from CID to major crimes, which is an enormous struggle for her, especially as she's the only woman on the team. She is still very much struggling with her feelings towards Cassie and her own identity, which causes difficulties between the pair.
The case was a tough one, with plenty of misdirection to make me wonder who the killer actually was and I can tell you I was shocked by the big reveal!
Case Sensitive is a gripping and entertaining book from beginning to end. I very much am looking forward to more stories featuring Cassie and Flyte.

Mijn favoriet Cassie Raven boek tot nu toe. In het vorige boek vielen de hoofdpersonages me een beetje tegen, maar in dit boek hebben ze me weer helemaal kunnen overtuigen en meesleuren in hun verhaal. Ze maken allerlei zaken mee, zowel privé als op het werk, maar blijven trouw aan zichzelf en maken ook een heel mooie groei door. De zaak die in dit boek aan bod komt vond ik wederom heel interessant. De rode draad over de verschillende boeken heen werd ook goed verder uitgewerkt. Door de korte hoofdstukken en alles wat er gebeurde kon ik dit boek ook gewoon niet neerleggen. Zeker het einde was weer heel spannend. Verder had ik sommige onthullingen al op voorhand door, terwijl andere mij helemaal verrast hebben (maar toch heel goed in het grotere plaatje pasten bij nader inzien).
Absoluut een aanrader dus! Voor iedereen die graag thrillers leest, en graag het onderzoek eens vanuit een ander perspectief wil benaderen dan vanuit dat van een politieagent, is dit echt een aanrader. Je begint wel best bij boek 1, Lichaamstaal.

I enjoyed this third book in the series. I didn't read book 2, I only read the 1st one and I noticed a great character's development in Case Sensitive. I admire Cassie and her dedication to her job and the dead people. I liked Flyte and it touched me deeply everytime she thought/spoke of her baby, Poppy😪.

The long-awaited third book in the series featuring Goth mortuary technician Cassie Raven does not disappoint. The shocking toxic white male culture of the Met Police (misogyny/homophobia/racism) is highlighted alongside a murder mystery involving a corpse washing up against the side of Cassie's boat. It's difficult to write a review without revealing the plot which is cleverly constructed with the usual red-herrings, twists & turns and dead bodies. I thought I had the murderer nailed near the start, but...
Also the relationship between Cassie and Flyte develops further when Flyte begins her journey out of the closet. Will Cassie and Flyte finally hit it off in the next book? What about Archie Cuff who has fallen deeply in love with Cassie? Incidentally, Flyte and Raven would be a great name for TV series based on the books. Overall, a well-written and gripping read with many breath-holding moments.
Also the relationship between Cassie and Flyte develops further when Flyte begins her journey out of the closet. Will Cassie and Flyte finally hit it off in the next book? This is an interesting book. I hadn’t read the previous books, but like the look of the cover and blurb. I enjoyed the story and pace of the book. This book is about the relationships of the characters as much as anything. Butbalso touches on getting joy from your job, dealing with the dead respectively, and a police murder investigation. Lots of researching has been undertaken by the author which adds real authenticity. Thank you to Bonnier Books and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.

Hierdoor zet Flyte zelfs haar carrière op het spel, of zal ze het met de dood moeten bekopen?
Mijn ervaring:
Wat een indrukwekkend, sterk en krachtig vervolg van deze thrillerserie. A.K. Turner heeft echt een beeldende, vlotte en erg fijne schrijfstijl. Het boek is opgedeeld in korte hoofdstukken die wisselen van perspectief tussen Cassie en Flyte. Daarbij weet ze de verhaallijn op de juiste momenten te versnellen, te vertragen, in detail te treden of dingen in het ongewisse te houden. Dit zorgt ervoor dat als je aan het boek begint, stoppen met lezen haast onmogelijk is.
De beide hoofdpersonages, Cassie en Flyte, kennen we natuurlijk al van de vorige delen. Het is sterk hoe A.K. Turner ze gedurende de delen meer diepgang geeft en laat evolueren. Daarbij is het ook erg gaaf aan deze serie dat de privé verhaallijnen van beide als een rode draad door de delen heen lopen. De personages in de verhaallijn zijn uniek, realistisch en heerlijk divers neergezet. Hierdoor voelt het verhaal waarheidsgetrouw en kloppend aan.
Het verhaal begint direct op boeiende wijze, namelijk op het moment dat er een lijk tegen de woonboot van Cassie botst. Vanuit daar ontvouwt zich een intrigerende, pakkende en verrassende zaak, waarin diverse twisten en wendingen zitten die je niet aan ziet komen. Naast deze hoofdlijn, weet A.K. Turner ook goede zijlijnen neer te zetten over de vader en oma van Cassie, het liefdesleven van Cassie, maar ook het privé- en liefdesleven van Flyte. Hierdoor is het weer een mooi en compleet verhaal geworden. Met een spannend en actievol plot, lijkt het hele verhaal net wat anders in elkaar te zitten dan gedacht. Tot slot, weer ze het complete verhaal met een grote verrassing af te sluiten. Ik kan nu al niet wachten op het vervolg..

Het boek bestaat uit korte hoofdstukken en A.K. Turner weet op de juiste momenten de verhaallijn te versnellen of te vertragen. Cassie en Flyte werken opnieuw aan een intrigerende zaak die anders in elkaar steekt dan gedacht, waardoor er een hoop twisten volgen. Naast de zaak weet A.K. Turner ook weer een goed vervolg te maken in de privé lijnen van zowel Cassie als Flyte. Het verhaal sluit ditmaal op erg verrassende wijze af. Ik kijk uit naar deel vier.
Mijn ervaring:
Wat een indrukwekkend, sterk en krachtig vervolg van deze thrillerserie. A.K. Turner heeft echt een beeldende, vlotte en erg fijne schrijfstijl. Het boek is opgedeeld in korte hoofdstukken die wisselen van perspectief tussen Cassie en Flyte. Daarbij weet ze de verhaallijn op de juiste momenten te versnellen, te vertragen, in detail te treden of dingen in het ongewisse te houden. Dit zorgt ervoor dat als je aan het boek begint, stoppen met lezen haast onmogelijk is.
De beide hoofdpersonages, Cassie en Flyte, kennen we natuurlijk al van de vorige delen. Het is sterk hoe A.K. Turner ze gedurende de delen meer diepgang geeft en laat evolueren. Daarbij is het ook erg gaaf aan deze serie dat de privé verhaallijnen van beide als een rode draad door de delen heen lopen. De personages in de verhaallijn zijn uniek, realistisch en heerlijk divers neergezet. Hierdoor voelt het verhaal waarheidsgetrouw en kloppend aan.
Het verhaal begint direct op boeiende wijze, namelijk op het moment dat er een lijk tegen de woonboot van Cassie botst. Vanuit daar ontvouwt zich een intrigerende, pakkende en verrassende zaak, waarin diverse twisten en wendingen zitten die je niet aan ziet komen. Naast deze hoofdlijn, weet A.K. Turner ook goede zijlijnen neer te zetten over de vader en oma van Cassie, het liefdesleven van Cassie, maar ook het privé- en liefdesleven van Flyte. Hierdoor is het weer een mooi en compleet verhaal geworden. Met een spannend en actievol plot, lijkt het hele verhaal net wat anders in elkaar te zitten dan gedacht. Tot slot, weer ze het complete verhaal met een grote verrassing af te sluiten. Ik kan nu al niet wachten op het vervolg..

Oh, this one was good!
A lot is going on in Cassie's life with his father back in it. As much as she tries, she's still struggling with it and isn't truly comfortable around him. And she stopped hearing the dead, which led her to wonder about her work and if she still wanted to do it now that her gift is gone.
If that isn't enough to keep her uneasy, she finds a dead body banging against her boat *facepalm*
Of course, she won't be able to stay away from the case, particularly when she notices that the elements of the case don't add up: the level of the body's decomposition is higher than it should be and she's intrigued.
DS Flyte, who is now at Major Crimes, is investigating the case. But her transition to Major Crimes isn't without toil; she's the only woman and she's finding it hard to fit in. Her new coworkers don't make it easy for her, either. Old school policemen, of course they don't!
Add to that the fact that she's also struggling not only with her identity but also with her failed marriage and the memories of her dead baby and well... she's having a difficult time, to say the least.
With both of them facing challenges in both, their personal and laboral lives is no surprise they have some rows :P But I like how their relationship is slowly evolving into a true friendship. And I don't loose hope for something more *g*
The mystery is extraordinary: complex and smartly written it kept me on edge until the end.

My favourite so far! I love’d seeing Cassie & Flyte’s characters develop as we see more strength & vulnerable abilities from them both. I think this was the strongest plot so far (& I love the other ones!) & I could fully picture everything that was happening.
I’m just mad at myself for taking so long to read it given I bought the physical book, the audio book & kindle when they were released!

Hoofdzaak is het derde deel in de Cassie Raven serie van A.K. Turner. Voor mij was dit het eerste boek dat ik in deze serie las. Deze serie heeft een doorlopende verhaallijn, maar elk boek is ook als standalone te lezen waardoor ik direct bij dit deel kon instromen in het verhaal. Ik ben al een tijdje erg benieuwd naar deze serie, maar wat zal dit boek gaan brengen?

I fell in love with the fabulous Goth, Senior Mortuary Technician Cassie Raven in Body Language (Cassie Raven #1) and I haven’t looked back since. Goth and body whisperer, she is everything I look for in a compelling character driven narrative. Cassie Raven has a unique voice; she is a young woman with her own individual style who does not easily fit into the standard societal image of a mortician. But she is intelligent, intuitive and most of all she cares about her job and the people who are under her care.
I’d recommend that you read these books from the beginning because there is quite a bit of backstory and with only three books so far, you don’t have a lot of catching up to do!
In Case Sensitive, Cassie is a bit off kilter. She’s so used to getting a sense of what happened from her bodies that when that special feeling disappears, she feels she’s lost the essence of why this job is so important to her. She’s also finding the arrival of her father in her life a bit of a strain. He and her grandmother spend hours talking about her mother and for Cassie it’s all just a bit too much after more than 20 years thinking her father was dead. Cassie is getting depressed and is feeling it may be time to chuck it all in.
Then one night as she settled down in her home, a canal boat in Camden, a dead body startles her by bumping across her bows. That’s the start of an investigation that draws Cassie in. Though to begin with this body of a man has nothing to say to her, she can see that something isn’t quite right. This body is decaying faster than is normal and it’s not until she regains her connection with the dead that she begins to realise why that might be.
Meanwhile D.S. Phyllida Flyte has moved from CID into a new Major Crimes Unit team and isn’t much enjoying being the only female officer on a team of seven male officers who have not gone out of their way to break up the boys’ club atmosphere that prevails in their unit.
When she’s sent to cover for CID on the case of the body that Cassie found, she realises that she’s unaccountably interested in running into Cassie again.
What I enjoy about this series, apart from the fabulous characters and the way that their relationships develop, is the way in which A.K. Turner’s research feeds into a series of fascinating case studies where cause of death is never as simple as it looks and Cassie’s intuition often leads to an interesting if unusual forensic answers, even when the death is not suspicious.
Then there’s Cassie and Phyllida’s relationships – with others and between them. The timing is never quite right between these two to see if there is a spark between them, and in this book, Phyllida also has some deep rooted matters that she needs to deal with before she can move forward.
In Case Sensitive, Phyllida has to deal with some very current issues facing the Met Police and she finds it hard to know just who to trust. Faced with the dilemma of fitting into a new team and simultaneously trying to uphold her own high professional standards, Phyllida will have to decide how she handles the information she receives and just who she can rely on.
Her decisions will have far reaching consequences and she and Cassie will have to work together to right more than one terrible injustice and solve two murders.
Verdict: I love this series and Case Sensitive is another hugely enjoyable addition. Great characters, fantastic research and true to life cases all work together to make this a must read book in an unmissable series.

Hoofdzaak kent een vlotte start. Al meteen ontdekt Cassie het lichaam van een man in het water. Ze is dan wel het een en ander gewend door haar werk als obductieassistente, maar schrikt toch wanneer het zo dichtbij komt.
Cassies mentale welzijn heeft een deuk gekregen als gevolg van de gebeurtenissen in de vorige boeken. Ook op relationeel vlak loopt niet alles zoals ze wilt en spelen tegenstrijdige gevoelens haar parten. Haar werk doet ze nog steeds met onnoemelijk veel respect, al is ze iets minder betrokken sinds ze niet echt meer kan communiceren met de doden.
Ook brigadier Phyllida Flyte heeft haar problemen. Ze is in een nieuw team terecht gekomen en is zoekende naar haar plek in deze groep. De onbekende man in het water lijkt daar door een ongelukkige val te zijn beland. Omwille van de trauma's uit haar verleden heeft ze verschillende redenen om de identiteit van deze man te willen achterhalen.
De spanning komt hiermee nog niet echt op gang. Toch wil en kon ik het boek vanaf de eerste pagina niet meer wegleggen. Cassie en Phyllida zijn personages waar ik erg graag over lees. Ze zijn elkaars tegenpolen, maar hun band is intussen geëvolueerd naar een respectvolle omgang. Toch komt die band in dit boek onder druk te staan.
Tijdens het eerste deel legt de auteur de nadruk op de verdere ontwikkeling van haar personages en dat werkt uitstekend. Ik vond het heel boeiend om hen weer beter te leren kennen en om te zien hoe ze met hun zorgen omgaan.
Flyte en Cassie zijn beiden doortastend en brengen daardoor belangrijke aanwijzingen aan het licht. Ze riskeren er hun job voor, maar de aanwijzingen onderbouwen hun theorie dat het toch niet om een ongelukkige val gaat. Hiermee treedt het spanningselement steeds meer naar de voorgrond.
Verschillende details wijzen erop dat er meer aan de hand is. Ik kon niet meteen raden welke richting het verhaal zou uitgaan. Er zijn nog een aantal pistes waardoor ik de afloop niet kon voorspellen. Geleidelijk aan, en op een aangenaam tempo, komen ze dichterbij de waarheid en verdwijnen de losse eindjes een voor een.
Net zoals in de vorige boeken heeft de auteur veel werk gestopt in de uitwerking van haar personages. Ze bieden voldoende diepgang. Cassie en Phyllida worstelen allebei met hun eigen trauma's, hebben net als iedereen hun sterktes en kleine kantjes, maar proberen wel steeds het juiste te doen. Daardoor komen ze erg realistisch over.
Bovendien heeft Turner een heel aangename schrijfstijl. De korte hoofdstukken doen vlot lezen en al de medische details vond ik super interessant. Richting ontknoping volgt de vondst van een tweede lichaam. De spanning was dan helemaal te snijden en dat resulteerde in een onverwacht einde. Wederom een sterk deel in deze geweldige serie.
Ik had het gevoel dat je dit boek perfect kunt lezen zonder de vorige delen gelezen te hebben. Als je nog net wat extra plaats op je TBR-lijst hebt, zou ik toch aanraden om gewoon met het eerste boek te starten. Je zult geen spijt krijgen. 😉

Coming a bit late to this series I can see already I'll have fun catching up with books 1 and 2.
Cassie Raven is a mortuary technician with a very special talent - she can hear whispers from the dead. Or she used to be able to, at the start of this book her ability has apparently dried up, leaving her struggling rather with her profession as well as with personal issues (her relationship with her father, and whether or not she should be dating one of the pathologists from the morgue).
Set in Camden Town, where Cassie lives in a boat on the canal, the story is high on atmosphere. This is a slightly rowdy part of London, the centre for a thriving alternative scene but also with pockets of deep poverty, and ongoing gentrification. Turner makes good use of this, peopling the story with intriguing characters and settings for what is basically the eruption of a decade-old murder mystery into the present day.
And it's a solidly based detective mystery - while there is a hint of the supernatural, this isn't allowed to overshadow the story: Cassie spends much of the book doubting that her ability ever was real, and even when it does work, it only gives her hint about what happened - as I said, the detective work here is at the centre of things and the truth will be revealed through rigorous sleuthing. While that is not all by the police, Cassie does have a partner there in unravelling things - DS Phyllida Flyte, also I think a returning character to this series. The chapters are alternately written form Felt's and Cassie's point of view, so allowing us to see what each woman is thinking about the other - useful because while they spar pretty dramatically with one another there is a definite will-they, won't-they element between the contrasting pair.
Flyte is an interesting and well-drawn character, an incomer form leafy Winchester to North London and to the Met and - because of this and because she's a woman - something of an outsider in the cliquey Major Crime team. Many of the undercurrents of this book are about how she deals with that and the threats and problems to be suffered in a far from reconstructed section of the Met Police - something countless recent real events support. Flyte also has her own problems, she's mourning a stillborn child and has a frosty relationship with her mum and with her ex. Like Cassie, she, too, faces romantic dilemmas: there;'s a definite sense that both women are trying to find away forward.
The crime plot at the heart of the book is twisty and well done, with surprises to the very end. There are, of course, Secrets to be revealed but they aren't always what you'd expect. I enjoyed the balance between the two sides - professional and personal - here and, like real life, loses ends are left on both fronts. I look forward to seeing where they will lead Cassie and Phyllida in future books.

Intensiver Rechtsmedizin-Thriller

Vor fast zwei Jahren bin ich mit dem zweiten Band in diese Reihe eingestiegen. Seitdem habe ich fast vergessen, wie intensiv Ermittlungen mit Raven & Flyte sind. Oder war ich diesmal einfach aufnahmefähiger für die Vibes? In Band 3 haben sie mich jedenfalls mit voller Wucht getroffen.

Darum geht’s: Eine Leiche treibt gegen den Rumpf von Cassie Ravens Hausboot. Der Mann kann nicht identifiziert werden. Niemand scheint ihn zu vermissen. DS Flyte kommt der Tote irgendwie bekannt vor. Und Cassie macht am Leichnam eine seltsame Entdeckung…

Ich mag Thriller, die in der Rechtsmedizin spielen. Nicht umsonst bin ich Fan der Werke von Dr. Michael Tsokos. Mit A.K. Turner habe ich eine weitere Autorin gefunden, die meine morbiden Bedürfnisse bedient. Ich bin Cassie Raven nur allzu gerne in den Sektionssaal gefolgt, habe ihren sensiblen Umgang mit den Toten beobachtet und ihr bei Obduktionen über die Schulter geguckt. Dabei konnte ich wieder einiges Wissenswerte in mich aufsaugen. So mag ich es. Aber auch abseits ihres Arbeitsplatzes konnte Cassie Raven mich wieder für sich einnehmen. Eigentlich mehr noch, als beim letzten Mal. Das gilt auch für die zweite Protagonistin Phyllida Flyte. Beiden bin ich diesmal richtig nahe gekommen. Die Damen haben jetzt den Status erreicht, dass ich sie nicht mehr vergessen werde.

Also, wir haben Insiderwissen aus der Pathologie und gleich zwei faszinierende Protagonistinnen. Ach ja, einen Mordfall haben wir auch noch. Ob der eines Thrillers würdig ist, darüber lässt sich mal wieder streiten. Das will ich aber gar nicht, denn A.K. Turner schreibt so oder so einfach toll und hat die Handlung gut entwickelt. Ich bin problemlos Seite um Seite durch das Buch geglitten und fand hier einfach jeden Aspekt interessant. Ob das Privatleben von Raven & Flyte, den Kriminalfall oder die Ermittlungen - alles wird untrennbar miteinander verwoben und von einer subtilen Spannung begleitet. Das war genau meins.

Mir hat das Buch sehr gut gefallen. Hier steckt alles drin, was ich bei Krimis & Thrillern mag. Nochmal der Hinweis: Es ist ein Thriller der spannungs-technisch ruhigeren Gangart, bei dem die Persönlichkeitsentwicklung der Protagonistinnen im Fokus steht. Das Konzept geht auf, weil die Figuren stark genug sind, um die Handlung zu tragen. Für mich ist es eine Reihe, die A.K. Turner auf diesem Level gerne noch um etliche Bände erweitern darf.

Zum Schluss sei noch erwähnt, dass der Verlag der Serie wirklich ein spektakulär schönes Cover-Design gönnt, das sich bei Band 3 konsequent fortsetzt. Ich liebe diese Optik einfach und hoffe, das sie beibehalten wird.

Vor fast zwei Jahren bin ich mit dem zweiten Band in diese Reihe eingestiegen. Seitdem habe ich fast vergessen, wie intensiv Ermittlungen mit Raven & Flyte sind. Oder war ich diesmal einfach aufnahmefähiger für die Vibes? In Band 3 haben sie mich jedenfalls mit voller Wucht getroffen.

Darum geht’s: Eine Leiche treibt gegen den Rumpf von Cassie Ravens Hausboot. Der Mann kann nicht identifiziert werden. Niemand scheint ihn zu vermissen. DS Flyte kommt der Tote irgendwie bekannt vor. Und Cassie macht am Leichnam eine seltsame Entdeckung…

Ich mag Thriller, die in der Rechtsmedizin spielen. Nicht umsonst bin ich Fan der Werke von Dr. Michael Tsokos. Mit A.K. Turner habe ich eine weitere Autorin gefunden, die meine morbiden Bedürfnisse bedient. Ich bin Cassie Raven nur allzu gerne in den Sektionssaal gefolgt, habe ihren sensiblen Umgang mit den Toten beobachtet und ihr bei Obduktionen über die Schulter geguckt. Dabei konnte ich wieder einiges Wissenswerte in mich aufsaugen. So mag ich es. Aber auch abseits ihres Arbeitsplatzes konnte Cassie Raven mich wieder für sich einnehmen. Eigentlich mehr noch, als beim letzten Mal. Das gilt auch für die zweite Protagonistin Phyllida Flyte. Beiden bin ich diesmal richtig nahe gekommen. Die Damen haben jetzt den Status erreicht, dass ich sie nicht mehr vergessen werde.

Also, wir haben Insiderwissen aus der Pathologie und gleich zwei faszinierende Protagonistinnen. Ach ja, einen Mordfall haben wir auch noch. Ob der eines Thrillers würdig ist, darüber lässt sich mal wieder streiten. Das will ich aber gar nicht, denn A.K. Turner schreibt so oder so einfach toll und hat die Handlung gut entwickelt. Ich bin problemlos Seite um Seite durch das Buch geglitten und fand hier einfach jeden Aspekt interessant. Ob das Privatleben von Raven & Flyte, den Kriminalfall oder die Ermittlungen - alles wird untrennbar miteinander verwoben und von einer subtilen Spannung begleitet. Das war genau meins.

Mir hat das Buch sehr gut gefallen. Hier steckt alles drin, was ich bei Krimis & Thrillern mag. Cassie heeft in haar werk dagelijks te maken met lijken, maar dan hoort ze op een ochtend gebonk tegen de romp van haar boot. Ze gaat kijken en er blijkt het levenloze lichaam van een man tegen haar boot aan te botsen. Zo dichtbij hoefden lijken nu ook weer niet te komen.
Brigadier Flyte denkt deze dode man ergens van te herkennen maar kan hem in eerste instantie niet plaatsen. Ze doet er alles aan om zijn identiteit te achterhalen. Ze heeft echter twijfels bij de betrouwbaarheid van haar collega's en wendt zich daarom tot Cassie.
Ze gaan samen op onderzoek en ontdekken geheimen die Flyte niet kan laten rusten. Hiermee zet ze haar carrière op het spel maar als ze niet uitkijkt zelfs haar leven.
Dit is alweer het derde deel in de Cassie Raven-serie en ook dit deel begint meteen spannend. Cassie ontdekt dat er een dode man tegen haar boot botst.
De hoofdstukken worden vervolgens afwisselend vanuit Cassie en Flyte verteld. De hoofdstukken zijn kort en hierdoor was ik iedere keer geneigd om nog snel een extra hoofdstuk te lezen. Waarna ik dan al snel een heel aantal hoofdstukken verder was.
Het verhaal is niet nagelbijtend spannend maar is wel zo geschreven dat ik steeds nieuwsgierig blijf en het boek op een bepaald moment zelfs niet meer weg kan leggen.
In dit deel komen we ook weer meer te weten over de privélevens van Cassie en Flyte. Hierdoor leer je ze in ieder deel net wat beter kennen. Flyte is een groot verlies aan het verwerken en het lijkt dat ze het, door een bepaalde ceremonie, een plekje kan geven. Cassie heeft moeite met relaties en wordt hier bewust van. Dit maakt mij nieuwsgierig naar het vervolg. Hoe ontwikkelen Cassie en Flyte zich verder.
Als er een luisterboek beschikbaar is dan luister ik het boek ook tijdens het lezen en dat heb ik bij dit boek dan ook gedaan. Het luisterboek is ingesproken door Evrim Akyigit. Ik heb al eerder boeken geluisterd die door haar zijn ingesproken en ik vind haar een erg prettige stem hebben om naar te luisteren.
Dit derde deel is niet razend spannend maar hield me wel continue nieuwsgierig. Hierdoor vloog ik weer door het boek.
Dit vlak ontvingen wij van Ambo Anthos. Dit beïnvloedt onze mening niet.

‘Deadly secrets are rising from the depths’ - cover tag line.

This is Book 3 in her series of forensic crime thrillers featuring Goth mortuary assistant, Cassandra (Cassie) Raven.
While background is provided, I would advise that the books are best read in order. Aside from being the best way to experience the development of a number of its key characters, there are a few ongoing storylines.
Due to this I won’t say much about the plot in order to avoid spoilers for the previous books, ‘Body Language’ and ‘Life Sentence’. Just a few details for context.
Cassie has seen many dead bodies during the course of her career, but it’s a new experience when the body of a drowned man knocks against the hull of her canalboat. Cassie finds that the case of the unidentified man is getting under her skin even though the police consider it a simple case of a drunken fall. She reaches out to Detective Inspector Phyllida Flyte, who she had worked with previously. Together they will start to dredge up secrets from the past . . .
Throughout the novel Turner moves between the perspectives of Cassie and Flyte. While I took to Cassie immediately as a character, it has taken longer for me to warm to Flyte; of whom Cassie said when contemplating the possibility of dating her that ‘Phyllida Flyte was clearly so deep in the closet she could see Narnia.’
Overall, I found ‘Case Sensitive’ an engaging read that gave me plenty of ‘edge of the seat’ moments. I have enjoyed all of the books in the series and feel that it is going from strength to strength.
I will note that some of the details are a bit grisly but that’s to be expected in forensic crime fiction, especially one that focuses on autopsies. I always appreciate that Turner conveys Cassie’s deep respect for the dead and her desire to give them a voice.
I have been enthusiastically recommending this series to my friends who enjoy crime fiction and can hardly wait for Book 4. It’s clear from the accolades from various authors that I am not alone in loving the Cassie Raven books.

Met Hoofdzaak zijn we alweer toe aan het derde deel in de serie rond Cassie Raven, de onconventionele obductie-assistente die je niet snel vergeet. Cassie is geen doorsnee hoofdpersoon: met haar gothic look, piercings en korte pikzwarte haar oogt ze misschien ruig, maar onder die stoere buitenkant zit een jonge vrouw die zich met hart en ziel inzet voor haar werk – en voor de doden die ze liefdevol haar ‘gasten’ noemt.
Turner neemt je niet alleen mee in spannende zaken en levensechte obducties, maar ook in het persoonlijke leven van haar personages. Cassie draagt een zwaar verleden met zich mee: ouders die ze verloor bij een ongeluk, een tijd op straat en een vader die plots weer in haar leven verschijnt.
Naast Cassie krijgt ook brigadier Phyllida Flyte in dit boek een stevige rol. Waar Cassie het liefst alle regels aan haar laars lapt, is Flyte juist een vrouw van orde en discipline. Dat zorgt voor botsingen, maar gaandeweg ook voor een groeiend respect – en stiekem zelfs wat chemie. Hun dynamiek maakt me nieuwsgierig naar waar dit duo nog heen kan gaan.
Het verhaal wordt chronologisch verteld, afwisselend tussen Cassie en Flyte. Door de korte hoofdstukken en de prettige schrijfstijl ga je vrij snel door het verhaal heen.
De kracht van Turner zit in haar realistische beschrijving van het mortuarium en het speurwerk, gecombineerd met een plot die slim in elkaar zit. De twists zijn verrassend, de spanning loopt lekker op en de ontknoping voelt goed.
Hoewel Hoofdzaak prima los te lezen is, is het bijna zonde om Cassies ontwikkeling te missen. Start je bij het eerste deel (Lichaamstaal), dan zie je hoe deze bijzondere vrouw en haar complexe relatie met Flyte echt tot bloei komen.
