This here place? Worse than the backside of Hades.” ~ Hank Varney
First let me say, this here trip to Slagton weren’t my idea. This place is chock full of bad company done helped itself to a double dose of bad medicine.
Slagton needs cleanin’, accordin’ to Miss Clem, and I know the crew to do it. I’m one of ’em. Hank Varney’s the name. Miss Clem and me, along with the two Sidewinders from Santa Fe—we’ll get the sharp-toothed vermin cleared out.
Now, some people say I’m lucky, but I don’t know if’n it’ll do me any good, what with the army of trouble me an’ the crew are facin’. If’n we don’t live through it, well, there goes Deadwood. Maybe even the whole of the Black Hills.
We’ll all be down the privy hole then, lookin’ up at the Backside of Hades.

Lots of action throughout. These boys make me laugh. It's really neat to see some of the recurring characters from the Deadwood series taking shape in this series. The humor, action and mystery keep me coming back.
Join the Santa Fe Sidewinders, Rabbit & Boone, along with lucky Hank, & Slayer Clem, on another supernatural adventure to save the West one monster kill at a time!
The Deadwood Undertaker books always deliver laughs, chills, and "the feels", all in an addictive series that you never want to end! Set in the historic western town of Deadwood, South Dakota, these books are part comedy, mystery, & thriller with supernatural & paranormal fights to the death...& just a touch of romance. This series is a romping good time!
Clementines is a Slayer hired to clean up the mining town of Deadwood, South Dakota. She signed up for more than she bargained for but she's found help in her friends. As she trains them to get ready to face the next deadly paranormal foe, she wonders if she is signing their death warrants. These friends and allies won't give her much choice though, since they have committed themselves to be her posse.
The monsters are real & the stakes couldn't be higher. They ban together to protect the innocent (& not so innocent) citizens of Deadwood & other mining camps nearby. All while bonding & learning more about themselves, each other, & this crazy supernatural world they've been thrust into. They bear it all with humor, bravery, caring, & a little bit of crazy! I highly recommend these books by husband & wife team, Ann Charles & Sam Lucky.
The Backside of Hades is the fourth book in the Deadwood Undertaker series and let me tell you it was a WOW for me! So much going on that I couldn't find a stopping point in order to put it down to sleep! There were quite a lot of "OH NO!" and "OH MY GOSH" moments in this book and even a few "Oh, wow's..." that will tug at your heartstrings! I really love this series and each book seems to pull the reader further into the world of the rugged old west and the paranormal world of "Others" as well as the lives of these amazing characters that Ann Charles and Sam Lucky have created. The other thing I love about these books is the wonderfully descriptive writing that sets the scenes and almost allows you to feel the cold of a Deadwood winter, smell the scents of wood fires and pine, (and some of the unpleasant scents that accompanied the times...), and sometimes feel the desperation of the inhabitants of this strange world. If you like adventure, a world of the paranormal, and some amazing characters, these books are for you! I can't wait for the next one!
Another rip snortin' adventure from the prolific and imaginative pens of Ann Charles and Sam Lucky. This one starts off strong and doesn't let up until the end. There is lots of chaos, mayhem, thrills and chills. New friends and old are around to help Miss Clementine as well as plenty of bad, um, things to keep the good guys on their toes. And speaking of bad things, there are not only the old, familiar ones but several new ones; some of which even Miss Clem hasn't seen before. A tip of the Stetson to artist C.S. Kunkel for his imaginative artwork that allows us to see exactly what our friends are facing. We learn a lot about what's happening in the Black Hills but there are still questions left unanswered which means Miss Clementine and her Sidewinder pals have adventures left to face. Yee ha, I can't wait!
The Backside of Hades by both Ann Charles and Sam Lucky is one of those books that grabs my undivided attention and holds it. It has the true wild western vibe along with the paranormal. As with every other book in the series, this one contains a lot of humor, action, and a thrilling adventure. The book gives an unpredictable ride. Meaning anything can happen and predicting what is next is impossible. Then, there is the set of amazing characters. They are well-developed and make me feel as if I've known them forever. I love any book that keeps me entertained. This is definitely for those who love comedy, paranormal, and westerns. This brings the Western way of life, to full life. But with unique twists and turns, The Backside of Hades is phenomenal. I completely recommend it to fans of Angie Fox and Agatha Frost!
I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
I will try my best to not give spoilers; however, this book packed A LOT of action in only 400 pages. Miss Clem, Hank, and the rowdy Sidewinders were in for gut-punching action while they were in Slagton. Every turn they took they encountered a new 'other', a new problem, a new ally, and new information. Each came nose to nose with death multiple times, never being able to catch a full breath. I loved being engulfed in the Undertaker's world, and sitting on the edge of my seat with each flip of the page! A high recommendation like always!
Ann Charles and Sam Lucky have done it again with the fourth installment of the Deadwood Undertaker series, crafting a non-stop, thrill-ride of an adventure that keeps the reader turning the pages, breathlessly wanting more. The adventures - or misadventures - of Clementine, Hank, Jack, and Boone take on an almost fever pitch in this book, with the group travelling to Slagton to deal with one problem, only to find that it's the least of the problems facing them. Some of our favourite Deadwood characters follow, helping and hindering as they are wont to do, and definitely ramping up the drama. With so many friends venturing into danger with her, Clementine finds herself grappling with responsibility to both her calling and her feelings for her companions, and guilt over the danger they have been put in. The absolute plethora of beasties that they face in the town can almost make your head spin as much as some of the characters' heads after various battles. Imaginative, informative (thanks to my Kindle translation function, I learned some interesting new words), and suspenseful, The Backside of Hades leaves the reader anxious for more. Well done!
This is a fun series. They really need to be read in order. Clementine, with the help of Boone, Jack and Hank is trying to find of what is going on in Slagtown so they can clean it out. They have to be very careful as there are many evil creatures trying to stop them.
This has to be the coldest, deadliest challenge Clementine and the men have ever confronted. The perils they face in Slagton keep the nerves taut and the desire to go home almost overwhelming. Truly, Slagton is the stuff of nightmares but bravery and humor and love keep them going even when it seems they cannot win.
I am so glad that Uncle Morton has a bigger role in this book. Clementine, Hank and the Side wonders are at it again. I seriously wondered what would happen to them. As death becomes commonplace on this mission, even Prudence pitches in, in her own way. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
My only complaint being the length of time between books. Never mind the writing process can be slow and all the plot twists to keep believable. I have thoroughly enjoyed every book MS Char!as has been involved with writing. She does an ex Solent job of interweaving each series.
This entry in the Deadwood Undertaker series doesn't really advance the story lines of the series a great deal. It also doesn't seem to have as much humor. Still, it holds the fort, and introduces a few new "Others" for out intrepid band to battle. It will be interesting to see if Charles and Lucky are tap dancing to stretch the series, or if they have more of their story to reveal.
Like all of this series, The Backside of Hades is full of supernatural thrills and suspense, tempered with humor and loyal friendships. I was glued to the book from beginning to end. I eagerly await the next book!
Backside of Hades a perfect addition to the Deadwood Undertaker series kept me in suspense. Clem , Hank, Boone and Rabbit make a great team. I also like how this series works well with the Deadwood series. A big fan of Ann Charles and Sam Lucky ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really enjoy this series! The authors have a wonderful way of creating characters with depth. That you root for. And yet you never know how things will turn out. A fun, wild ride in Deadwood!
This is yet another amazing book by Ann Charles. I love this series and this one definitely doesn't disappoint. If you haven't tried this series yet, you should the characters are all very lovable and leaving you ready for another visit!
Anne Charles has a way of hooking you, and I haven't read one book of hers that I didn't enjoy. Dead wood undertaker series is a great read about monsters, and mystery, with action all the way through till the end.
Loved every action packed page! Always enjoy the characters and adventures they share. The history of Deadwood keeps building from the other Deadwood series. Can't wait for the next!
4.5/5⭐: A very good read and one of the better books in this series. I would've given this book 5⭐ but dang it if they didn't over use the f word, I don't mind it on occasion it was seriously overused. That aside definitely worth the read.
I love this series. It’s fun to jump back in time to old Deadwood and get to know the old characters while following the lives of the new Deadwood gang. Keep them coming!
Good story with different types of monsters every where that the slayer must destroy. Unfortunately one of her sidewinders is taken over by one of the stronger of the monsters. Clementine must do something that she never thought she would have to do to make everything back to normal.
The newest installment of the Deadwood Undertaker series does not disappoint. A great read with lots of action, laughs, and paranormal mystery. Another enjoyable read that I could not put down.
I loved learning more about Clementine and the Sidewinders especially in battle. I also liked that Uncle Mort was around. I can't wait for the next book!
The Backside of Hades picks up with Clementine, Boone, Jack and Hank on a quest to deal with an infestation in the Black Hills, but of what turns out to be much more than they could have imagined! The group battles their way through so many “others” trying comprehend what is really going on in Slagton and suffer many blows along the way. This book was full of action, excitement and had me holding my breath a couple of different times! I love this ongoing story and book 4 did not disappoint! Highly recommend!
