Most people think my life as a certified necromancer is filled with raising the dead to resolve estate disputes and make the rich richer. And they’re not wrong. But I’ve added illegal raisings and consulting with the police to my resumé.
Normally, I ask the recently departed “whodunit” for the cops, but in a recent string of gruesome killings, the dead aren’t talking. And while the souls are silent, the vampires won’t shut up. They think I’m the key to solving their problems. To complicate matters, I also keep getting sucked into the veil—the magical realm where spirits rest and a mysterious castle keeps appearing.
All I want in life is to do my job, help my mom pay her medical bills and not murder a certain arrogant detective. But if I don’t figure out how the murders, the veil and the vampires are connected, all while keeping my less-than-legal activities from the cops, I might go from making sacrifices to becoming one.
A deliciously dark Urban Fantasy tale with a flawed necromancer trying to survive a harsh world by International Bestselling Author, J. C. McKenzie.
J. C. McKenzie is a book loving, gumboot-wearing, unapologetic science geek. She predominantly writes urban fantasy and fantasy romance. When she’s not spinning tales, she’s in the classroom sharing her passion for science and mathematics while secretly warping the young impressionable minds of our future to carry out her evil plans for world domination. She lives in the Pacific Northwest.
This was pretty good and definitely had me intrigued. There was a large cast of characters that I found interesting and I'm looking forward to seeing more of them. I will say, there was a lot going on in this book and at times that was fun and kept me captivated, but at others it felt like too much. The storylines were competing with each other at times and it had me wishing one would end so I could get back to one of the other ones.
Overall, I'm excited to see what Lark will do next and I'm super curious about Kang so I can't wait to get more from them. I'm also really interested in finding out just who Lark's love interest will be. I have my suspicions but where it left us it could still end up being someone else.
This was a very good, Urban Fantasy read! It's rare I find a good new one, and when I do, it reminds me of why it's my absolute favourite genre.
Likeable, but flawed female MC, decent crime plot, good side characters and a splash of slow burn romance all makes for an enjoyable read.
It was quite short, just under 200 pages of actual book, which wasn't a massive deal, but I feel that with the extra 70 pages of an average length novel that the world and some of the relationships could have been a bit more fleshed out, but this is a minor niggle. I'm very glad there are two more books I can read immediately!
The first full story in a new series and you can already see there are going to be comparisons made to the Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton but to compare the two would be unfair. Yes, they are both necromancer s, yes, they but work with the police and at a firm that animates corpses for a fee (mainly disputed wills) but that's the extent of the similarities. Lark Morgan is vastly different from Anita, Lark has her mother still alive also she is a twin (he's Logan and a professional assassin) Lark is a modern woman, strong, sexy, independent and able to take care of herself. In this book we see Lark called in to.consult (raise a murder victim) after a woman is found dead in her own home, the murder was particularly violent with multiple stab wounds. Some time later the husband is found after having committed suicide leaving behind a confession to the murder. Due to the condition of the corpse Detectives Kang and Jacobs are suspicious that this case is not over, they are proved right when another woman is found dead a few days later. Lark is also busy in her personal.life, the head vampire in Vancouver offers to cure Larks mother of her fatal illness if she agrees to work for him, loving her mother Lark sees no choice but to accept his proposal not realising it's going to put her in danger. Larks mother gave her five important rules which she must never break while using her necromancy .................. But good luck.with following the rules when you have no idea what you're doing and spend a lot of time just using your magic to wing it................ I enjoyed this book, i.like Larks relationship with her brother and his partner and her hit and cold relationship.with Det Kang.
First, the magic system in this book is amazing. While reading, I knew this book had mystery and romance, but unlike most books, I could not pinpoint the cause for either one. There were multiple suspects I had running through my mind and I was amazed at the actual result. The men all seemed so ready for a romantic moment with Lark and it was tough, until almost the end, to figure which one I wanted to root for. I hope to read more from this series soon.
I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Wow, wow, and wow some more. I sailed through this book and was really disappointed when it ended.
What I liked… What’s not to like? It has… Cool magic Bargains with dangerous men Mr. Broody vs Mr. Rich More cool magic Family secrets
What I didn’t like… Either it was too short, or I read it too quickly.
A badass necromancer with a mysterious family history, fascinating and rich worldbuilding, sweet slow burn, sticky situations, and a satisfying resolution for the first book in what should prove to be an addictive series.
Oh i love this new series!!! So our world but something happened to make paranormal creatures, witches, shifters and vampires known. Now they live like anyboby and works but there are still some rules each " glamy" as they are called must follow. Vampires can't make vampires as they want for example and magic users are registered and must follow some specific laws as not to loose their licence.
Lark Morgan is a necromancer and a porwerful one even if she is not exactly liking that.....the sacrifice of animals needed to make it work some some trivial matter does bother her. She is respectful of the deceased but she does need to work as she is saving to pay for her mother medical treatment. She is strong willed, determined but has a kind heart and i really appreciate it as it balanced the darker side. Living with her brother and his boyfriend, her love life is a mess but with her strange hours it's not surprising...working very late all the time sometimes helping the police or more precisely officer Kang who keep bickering with her , he is so funny.
Suddely the master of the vampires offers her a deal she can't refuse while a precedent client is " courting" her and the police is confronted to a series of strange murders. Poor Lark has very little time for herself and the danger keeps growing so she will need to decide what she really wants and who to trust.
I really loved the story , i read it in one sitting. If i was a bit hesitant at first because of the necromancer part i'm really happy to say it's wonderfully written, the sacrifices are not overly described. The fact Lark is repectful and is moved by what she must do make it work perfectly. I also loved the interaction between Lark and Kang ( and his partner), the sparks between them are funny and the mystery about both of their secrets just make us impatient to read more
A great urban fantasy with a dark twist, a touch of romance and full of action to have you addicted to this new series!
I received this as an ARC in return for an honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶🌶/5
Oh my god. Just oh my god.
McKenzie did it again! This book is such a great read and is a fast read without losing key details and plotlines.
Lark is a girl with death powers that gets pulled into the world of police investigations, gruesome murders, and sexy men that know just what buttons to push to drive her senseless.
While navigating her usual office job with unusual hours, Lark is pushed by her sassy colleague, her deadly brother, and his bashful beau to open her heart to the right man for her. Too bad she either cannot follow her needs or she often finds herself drawn to guys that bring trouble her way.
Through all this, she is constantly forging forward with trying to make ends meet while paying for her mom's treatments, often finding herself wrapped into situations that are less than stellar.
And that ending! I had to reread the last chapter twice just to wrap my head around it! So many questions! You can bet, I'm buying at my bit to read the sequel!
This book has it all! From romance and passion to heartbreak and past and present traumas. Let me be absolutely honest when I say you will undoubtedly find something to love about this book.
McKenzie doesn't get as much credit as she deserves with her amazing writing and many series. If you are up for a new book, this one needs to make your tbr asap!
From one Canadian to another, thank you again for such a great book written in the Canadian context! It's a rare find and even rarer to find it done well.
I'd be shouting my recommendations from the Rockies to Green Gables!
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "DEATH MAKER" This story hooks you from the start with so much mystery, suspense, intrigue, danger, secrets, magic, necromancy, paranormal creatures Witches, Vampires, Shifters, Spirits, one steam, dark twist that keeps you turning the pages. Lark Morgan is a powerful necromancer who's strong willed, determined, kind hearted, respectful of the dead but she needs to work to pay for her mother's medical treatments, living with her boyfriend & brother her life isn't all what its cracked up to be, working with the cops one in particular Officer Kang they have their challenges sometimes, he's amusing. Lark gets an offer from the Master Vampire one she can't refuse, the police are confronted with with a series of strange murders, she keeps getting pulled into the veil where a mysterious castle appears, the dead aren't talking to her, the vampires won't shut up, they think she's the key to their problem. I definitely recommend to get this interesting on the edge of your seat adventure if Lark doesn't figure out how the murders, the veil & vampires are connected & keeping her illegal activities from the cops she might go from making sacrifices to bring one its book you don't want to miss getting. AWESOME DARK TWISTED ADVENTURE 🖤🖤🖤

I am attending a book con this summer in Vancouver (BB4E) and this author is attending so I thought I'd give her book a spin and see what I think. I was happily surprised when this book was actually based out of the city I live in! I have had this happen a few times when I pick up a book randomly without knowing the author is local and the book has a bunch of local stuff described but I think this book was one of my favourite times. It's clearly another world with lots of fantasy elements but her there's the name of my quaint city's police force and inner harbour mentioned :) it never failed to make me smile as I was reading. This is certainly not the only reason I am rating this book five stars. It has many things going for it: - the FMC is clearly a magical badass and I can't wait to see what powers she discovers about herself in the coming books. - no insta-love - she is not, I repeat, not, a virgin ... The naive virgin character is so overdone and tiring, I was glad to see this author didn't go down that beaten path. - the world building is decent - so far we have camps and necromancers among witches and other spirit type beings. I also enjoyed that she visits the veil, that's less common too. - the steam is definitely low in this one but I have hope for more steam in the future :) the foreshadowing is there :) - it's a FAST read. So nice to have a fantasy book under 500 pages, I like to break them up a bit, this was a nice change.
I absolutely loved this first book in this new series from J.C. McKenzie. Lark Morgan is a necromancer and a pretty powerful one at that, but there are certain rules her mom has told her she must follow in order to keep her family secrets.
As well as raising the dead to solve will disputes, Lark also works with the local Victoria police department to raise the spirits of recently murdered victims to solve their murder. A fairly simple life for a necromancer I guess, until the corpse of a murderer is found very desiccated and something just doesn't feel right. Together with Detectives Kang and Jacobs, Lark gets more involved in this serial killer case with some surprising results.
At the same time, the vampires need her help in raising their newly turned vampires and through this Lark gets a great deal - well it looks like a great deal on the surface anyway! And throw in an unexpected new skill as well, one she must keep secret from the vampires, and things seem to be going her way.
However, when a previous client invites her out for a date, she accepts and she actually enjoys his company, but when their third date takes a turn for the worse, Lark inadvertently breaks one of her mom's rules!
I loved Lark - she wasn't your usual physically strong heroine, but she definitely held her own against everyone who tried to hurt her. I loved her honesty and even though her necromancer powers call her to do what she does, she doesn't always relish in it. She has a great respect for the dead and only does what is needed and nothing more.
I am very intrigued by her brother's skill set as well and so want to know more about what he gets up to! Can't wait to read the next book in this series.
I received an ARC copy of this book, but this review is my own honest one.
Loved the characters, the dynamics between them, and as with other books by J.C., the Canadian settings beautifully described.
Once I had a break in my schedule, I started reading and didn't want to stop. Having to break for work and life was very annoying.
Death Maker is reminiscent of early Anita Blake, which made me incredibly happy. I can't wait for the next installment and am now searching for the prequel.
I wanted to take a break from technology and read more this year, and having the opportunity to read something new that captured my interest so quickly has reignited a love for reading I hadn't realized had gone anywhere.
Once again, J.C. has done it again with a captivating story, well thought out characters and enough sass, snark and sarcasm to lighten up the darker plot points. 10/10!
This was such a good read! I absolutely loved it! It gave me Supernatural ( the TV show) vibes and I loved it! I love a good necromancer book and this hit the spot. I can’t wait for the next book to come out! I got so caught up in reading that I thought I still had at least 3 chapters left to go and to my utter disappointment I finished the book. I am going to need the next book ASAP. Run and get yourself a copy of this and the prequel and binge them! And then binge some more of her books because they are all fabulous!
Ok ok ok. So, I have had the great honor of getting a few ARC copies of J.C. McKenzies books and this one is no different, BUT this is the best one I've read yet, and I'm sad I have to wait for the next book.
I read this book in 5 hours, and I could not put it down. Character building and world building were on point. I absolutely love Lark and Connor's banter back and forth.
I am enjoying the necromancy and Lark having so many different jobs that we get to see different types of "raising" spirits, and the incorporation of leviathan is pretty well done for the little bit we get to see of him, I might be simping for him already, but will probably regret that in the next book... or not. We will have to see.
Hopefully, in the next book, we will get to see Lark and Connor's relationship move forward.
All in all, I very much enjoyed this book.

I could not put his book down. Lark is a necromancer and her journey in this first book of the series is filled with action, suspense, magic, spirits, vampires and a touch of romance. Lark is my kind of lead strong, sassy and flawed. The world that JC McKenzie has created for the series in which paranormal creatures live out in the open is fascinating. Her search for the serial killer is not over and I can't wait for book 2
I loved this story about Lark and the people around her. At its heart it is a murder mystery but with a death twist to it that made a great story. The murders were unique, the characters a blast, and Lark is an amazing main character. Plus the bonus of Lark and Kang interactions throughout the story were epic and a blast to read. Just a great beginning to another amazing series to get sucked into and enjoy from one of my favorite authors.
I had the honour of receiving this book as an ARC and I can say I’m thoroughly impressed. The story itself is beautiful and the way it’s told the the supernatural aspects to the world building. I love the banter between characters and how likeable Lark was. I can’t wait for the next one as the twist in this one had me hooked. Overall a really good read for all lovers of paranormal books.
First of all, I love a good necromancer novel. Lark was relatable and likeable. Kang was your typical detective looking to solve the case and get the girl. I loved the take on necromancy, with the rules and the veil and the lord. It’s a different take on the genre and it does justice to the supernatural world. I am definitely looking forward to more of Lark’s story!
I loved this book so much I could not put it down. I’m not usually one for dark books but this one is dark with a lot of humour that lightens the mood. I love the tension between Lark and Connor and I’m anxious to see where it leads. I want to binge the next book immediately. The Canadian locales were described beautifully and spot on accuracy.
Honestly loved every aspect of this book. I can’t wait for book 2. The story line is fantastic, the characters are *chefs kiss*, and I ate it up like a hungover girl at brunch. I don’t know how I’m going to wait until June for book 2!
Hooked from the start.Lark is used by the local police to use her necromancer powers to help solve cases. She also work with agentices that help people settle things after one is dead. This full of action pack and i cant wait to read more of this and more of kang and the guy in vile.
The magic, the romance, the mystery I love everything about this book 🫶
I’m in desperate need of the second book! Absolutely adore Lark and Kang like omggg the way we don’t even get his POV but can just tell he’s obsessed with Lark😤
This was a really good book. I enjoyed reading about Lark and what she gets up to. If I did have a complaint it would be that the book was that easily read and ended too soon. I am off to read the next book!!
What a great story with unexpected moments around every corner. Just when you think you have the story figured out Mckenzie veers her readers off course and takes it a new way. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to the next one in this series.
