Oak Mountain University #1

Unveiling the Arcane

Rate this book
New Year. New School. Different World.

Sage Fleur wasn’t expecting to leave Brown at the end of her freshman year. She wasn’t expecting to be starting at the mysterious Oak Mountain University as a sophomore, either. And looking over her schedule, she’s baffled by some of her classes – what exactly is “Species Traits”, anyway? But what her father’s will says, Sage has to do – if she wants her inheritance, that is.

New places and new people are hard for Sage to deal with, especially when emotions run high. And as Sage prepares to juggle her studies with her shifts at Jitter Bean, the new job she just landed, making friends is the last thing on her mind.

But when four guys make a bee-line for her and seem set on making their friendship last, what’s a new girl to do? It’s when Sage finds out that her friends are twin demons and two mythical beings, that her timetable starts to make sense. And it’s not Sage’s fault that her new friends are also super-hot, right?

As her friendship with Aiden, Caden, Dante, and Maddox deepens, Sage wonders if her ability to read emotions is less of a weakness and more of a power. So when black feathers start to appear in her bed, and any bed she shares, Sage knows things are about to change at Oak Mountain, her included.

Sage is focused on her studies, but four hot guys shouldn’t get in the way, should they?

This is a MMMFMM reverse harem novel where the FMC falls in with a group of lifelong friends with another guy joining later.

Very flat, the plot is almost nonexistent.
I like characters driven books but this one didn’t worked because the characters were pretty flat too, it could’ve been very interesting but sadly it wasn’t.
Needs an editor, and there’s a lot of grammar errors, spelling mistakes, is it Caden or Caiden ? I usually don’t mind but it was very noticeable in this book.

🌶🌶.5

I enjoyed this for the most part! I agree that it does need a good ol’ editor scrub and some parts did drag a bit but overall, I’m looking forward the next book.

I liked all the main characters and how quickly they took to Sage, definitely a bit of insta-love happening for some. The spice was pretty good too, especially the epilogue scene. Also, adding Rowan to everything? YES PLZ. The second he was described as bigger than Maddox and covered with tattoos, I was hereeeee for him to join! Fingers crossed everything goes well. 🤞🏻

I don’t trust James. There’s something about him that rubs me the wrong way and has from the second they met. I feel like maybe he’s the real stalker and Mandy was just a distraction. 🤔

While we got to watch the foundation of their relationship build and had a smidgen of drama with the stalker, I think we could have had a few more clues about her parents, maybe testing out her wings after the attack, or even more background info on the guys.

I could genuinely get over the spelling mistakes. Heck, even though I questioned. My sanity at first- I even thought I could get over periods being put where periods shouldn’t go (see what I did there? 😉). I got over bad grammar, sometime poor writing and for what?

I got to just a SMIDGE below 60% and- SPOILER!

I literally just couldn’t anymore after the Twins and Sage had their first romp. Not bc the scene was especially cringe (though it wasn’t really good either) but bc it came off as sooooo rapey. And thankfully, i don’t mean that in the literal sense but because both of the twins made an informed decision to sleep with the FL KNOWING they would probably end up bonded as Mates and understanding if that happened, if she died, they died too. And. They. Didn’t. Tell. Her. Sht. Before they went ahead and knowingly made the decision for her.

Dude. Total wtf. That’s just not cool.

The ironic thing is, I’m a lover of dark (dark, dark, dark, dark, dark- think 98% cacao dark) romances. I adore them. So this kind of thing wouldn’t normally phase me. What makes this different tho, is that it came the DUCK out of nowhere!!!

The entire book up until that point had been practically sunshine and rainbows (the stalker doesn’t count, that tropes been had and done before, if she had had a paranormal serial killer after her it would have been to the exact same effect 😐🥱😐)up to this point and then there’s just this absolutely random assault from a Sex demon who knows D@mned well better. And his Greedy brother who would have been more believable as the catalyst for such a thing but wasn’t- and is also too much of a “looks like a Cinnamon roll, is a Cinnamon roll but could kill you” kind of situation here but he has been SPECIFICALLY described to not want to ROB her of ANY of her things (except for maybe her herself…).

I’m just not buying (or liking) that either of them had this total script flip after making it in 50% of the way and hearing all about how much the FL has changed them for the better. It’s apparently poppycock.

And if anyone says “it’s bc they were trying to save her!! They couldn’t let her starve!” Shuddup. Consent is consent and I didn’t see any trigger warnings or labels of dark romance (as I am always on the want to keep a keen eye out for bc they are my children) to give me any sort of warning or heads-up.

Not cool turning the boys into scum so fast for a quick and easy plot armor bedroom scene. 💀

I couldn’t even make it to the part where we meet Rowan I was so ick-ed out!!! 😫💔😫💔😫

This could be amazing. The premise is great and i love all the guys. However, I can’t give it more than three stars for the following reasons:

1. Please for the love of everything find an editor, even on fiverr or something
2. Anal with no prep - why would you do that why why why
3. Would love more development with her wings, getting to know how to use them and such. That shower scene holy moly - more of that pls lmao

I definitely will be reading the second book

Has Potential but Needs a editor

Wish I could give this book more stars but the grammar problems along with a plot that had a tendency to lack a strong focus point made me almost not finish the book. Hopefully those problems get fixed in the sequel

I ended up at a 3 because this was the longest less than 300 pages may have ever read. spoilers ahead.

Honestly I'm not sure where to start with this one. So much happened and so much relationship stuff. I just don't know. I guess we will start with main characters.

Our main girl: Sage seemed to switch back and forth from utterly useless and emotional to snarky and confident and I wasn't sure if I liked the switches. I get all people have different sides to them but the "weak" persona of not being able to handle things bothered me at times. Yes we have alpha men to care for you, but it felt like they were doing too much for her and I wanted to see some fire. We also start the book with a best friend who is like a sister to you and a mom you are close with and we only get one instance of you texting or calling them? Did we just drop that plot point? This was such a big piece of her beginning story yet never again do we hear anything about them.

The main men:
Dante:
Pretty normal run of the mill leader role here. Stubborn has control issues etc. However I feel the ball was dropped on him like it was for sage. We learn in the beginning he went to foster care and was a changed guy afterward. He doesn't like physical touch and has control issues that make even his friends worried, and all that goes *poof* because of sage? There isn't a mention of why he doesn't like touch he never tells her about foster care or really anything. Maybe this happens off page and we are too assume it occurs but without acknowledging these factors about his personality he becomes a little one note.

Maddox:
Similar to the other two characters we have this back story of unwanted family, cruelty, and harshness and we have a character who is self conscious and wasn't even sure he would ever have a mate but he would be by sages side regardless. Then that story line poofs into the air as well. We have no mention of insecurity or issues from that point on. We also get an off handed comment about how he would do sexual things with Dante and Aiden then it just happens with Dante without any thoughts or preamble or even Dante being on the fence about men. Not sure where that is going but it seems out of left field.

Aiden:
I feel bad but both twins started out strong then became side characters. I think it's because so much development with the plot and relationships occured in one book versus allowing the relationships to blossom over 2 or 3 books. The problem with that is instead of getting their own book they are crammed to the start of this one.

Caden:
See Aiden* and ditto as the author stated multiple times throughout this book, because the twins become interchangeable at some point.

Sawyer:
Why do we need Sawyer? Why can't he just be a friend and body guard sent to help. Gun to my head I could not say much about this guy. Older and tattoos. The end. Yet we are supposed to want them to bond. Nope.

Plot:
Overall the plot started well. The unknown origin of sage and her powers. The beginning stages of the group forming and the natural progression. However it dragged on for me so badly after we had established the mates. Why do we need another mate? Why was the stalker who it was? I mean I guess but wouldnt it have been better to pick someone who made sense? Sage didn't even hangout with this person outside of work. Why would they be obsessed.

So I know there are planned to be 4 more books in addition to this one and I'm sure they have political intrigue etc. But do I need to read them? Everyone I care about it together and happy at the end of this one. I don't really care to see her story with Sawyer and I don't really care to watch the MM begin to take larger role because it weirds me out they grew up like brothers and now want to be sexual, and after everyone is already to together and fighting together I don't feel an urge to move forward.

This was a very sweet book!

The beginning was a bit messy and it is noticeable that the author has not written many books yet (correct me if I'm wrong).
But despite that, I liked the book.

Some plot and worldbuilding was missing. but the vibes were good. The men were sweet (except for that scene where they forgot to ask for consent).

The idea of this story is super interesting!
I would have liked to learn more about the men's backgrounds! I certainly found Dante and Maddox very interesting!
There were quite a few spicy scenes.

This was really good!

This was so much more then I was expecting..
I really liked the relationship between the fmc, and the guys. Also it's obviously going to turn into more m/m between the guys. I'm not always a fan unless it's done right, and this one is.
Looking forward to the next one..

Sexy, Sexy, Sexy

Mel Lane has written a fun, entertaining sexy story with a enjoyable storyline. I hope that Mel continues with Sage and her guys story. There was a few errors in grammar and verbiage but it didn’t take away from the story. Thank you Mel for writing this story and I look forward to reading more of your stories!

Interesting story, but

The story itself was enough to keep me reading. However, it needs a LOT of editing. There are so many errors, it is distr.

Not a bad start

Everyone was likable and the story was entertaining. The main issue was the endless grammatical errors. It really took a lot away. 3.5 stars for that alone

Completely disjointed

There were multiple, ongoing issues with this book. First, there was no world building. The author allowed a single instance of infodumps, (by 47% when I gave up), and that was that. There was no real character development, just stated characteristics. The author changed the spelling of Caden/Caiden and Aden/Aiden multiple times without a clear reason. There were misused homophones and flat out wrong words used throughout, not to mention some incorrect punctuation. Overall, this was a mess that obviously didn't have an editor. I doubt I'll read anything else by this author.

Got book 1 & 2 free a while ago and just got to reading it now. In the beginning I almost gave up as it seemed like it was going to be a too sweet book for me. I stuck it thru thou. It is sweet but whatever. It has changing POVs which is great. The downer is that the relationship with the guys was like BAM. It just didn’t seem well developed. They all could have still came together but needed more meshing. I get it, it’s like fated mates but a little different but still.

Great story

While not completely original or unexpected, I really enjoyed the plot and Sage’s discovery of the Arcane.

The pace was great and made for an enjoyable read. Sage was a relatable FMC who was strong, patient, endearing and most important, rational. She didn’t jump into anything head first or felt the need to prove anything to anyone in the most annoying way. She made sound decision and was so fiercely protective of the guys I wanted to cheer her on (nobody touches my Maddox).

The guys made for great partners. Each with a distinct personality and vulnerability. I really want to know more of their personal story after the few glimpses we got.

While in an academy setting, we very much focused on Sage, her powers and her relationship with the guys so if that’s not what you are looking for, this might not be the book for you.

Nice banter, good chemistry, interesting plot and an ending that leaves a lot to be expected. I didn’t realize it wasn’t a standalone so I’m a bit disappointed I’ll have to wait for the next book for a while. I would definitely recommend !

Sage's college plans changed when her late father's estate made the condition she attend Oak Mountain University. So, she finds herself in the middle of nowhere in a private room, working at a coffee shop, and taking the oddest elective classes imaginable. Sage is an empath and has never handled people well. However, the four boys on her floor, Aiden, Caden, Dante, and Maddox instantly make her one of their group. It's as if they were destined. When she finds out that her friends are twin demons and two mythical beings it does nothing to change her feelings and somehow makes sense. Then when she starts finding feathers in her bed, it proves there's a reason her father wanted her on this magical campus.

This is a good bare-bones story that needs polishing. It needs thorough worldbuilding and more character development. It's also more telling than experiencing. The angst is minimal because each time an issue arises, it's solved almost immediately. The author needs a lesson in angst. But the characters are likable and the mythical aspects are interesting. There's a lot of room for growth in future books.

Writing is juvenile and the plot is basic at best. I stopped after the major consent issue: This is set in a university but the author has made this university into a high school academy. Also, for someone who loves her mom soooo much, she has talked to her not once in over half the book, not even to check on her illness. Same thing with her "best friends": we have one phone call and that's it; she certainly doesn't act like she cares about any of these people in her life.

Overall I really enjoyed this ... But ... For some reason around the 50% mark I lost my momentum and had to force myself to finish.

What I liked:
- I'm a sucker for a magical academy book
- yes, there was insta love, but it felt organic (imo)
- hidden destiny? Yes please.
- rare magical species

What could have used some improvement:
- we didn't see them ever actually go to class (petpeeve) too much telling, not enough showing
- character development was lacking. We were told what their species were and that they were powerful, but never saw them really do anything unique. Even the bad guy didn't utilize their power.
*I feel like it was a cop out for the author to say that it was taboo to talk about specie types and abilities ... Just a way to not have to add character context. *
- world building was really lacking
- I'm not a huge "siren" fan
- I wanted her to get with the last guy, but I needed to see a little more chemistry.

Great Book

I really liked this book. It kept me interested from the beginning and I didn’t suspect who the stalker was at all… I loved how smart the fmc was with schooling. The guys all seemed to have this instant attraction to her. The men weren’t the classic group of RH that we normally see in books which I loved. This book had me guessing, falling in love with the characters. I only rated it a 4* because I found there was a few sentences here and there that didn’t seem to make sense grammatical. There was a chapter where it wasn’t obvious the the pov had changed and I was so confused. Otherwise I loved the povs, they were perfected in a way that there was always a balance to who you were reading about and how that character played into the chapters scenes. It also made me love the guys even more. Especially Maddox. He was my fav!

Ugh...Freaking brats, man

I would have loved to give this book more stars. It started out great.. Loved the plot, the action, the mystery, the cute/funny moments, but the brat behavior from the FMC just drove me bananas. They're super sweet to her, succumb to her whims BEFORE they even find out what she is and her repayment of their kindness is embarrassment and frustration? For what? Cause she wants a spanking? Gtfoh man. I have never/will never understand brats and the need for adults to act immature/childish for a reaction or to get what they want when all it takes is communication. To all the brats/brat lovers, y'all will probably love this one but for me, the brattiness just plain ruined what coulda been a great read, especially since it's a slow burn and I never read those

Good story but needs a good editor

2.5 star rating.

This was a good storyline for the novel, which looks to be a new series, but needs a good editor. There were too many issues throughout the whole book.

The characters were likeable. The MFC was not a total bada$$, but instead seems to be one that will grow with each book written. The alpha males are also in the same boat. They may be the strongest, most eligible bachelors, but are also young adults and not able to do it all, just yet.

There does need to be some world building as I felt a lot was missing and some of the relationships doesn't make any sense.

Anyhow, I hope to see improvements in this author's future books and look forward to seeing the growth and creativity.

Love them all already!

An amazing first book! Can’t wait to read the rest. I love that it wasn’t all insta love. Their relationships grew from friendship to more. Even if it was at a quicker pace than some books. Definitely not a slow burn, which I prefer! I love all the guys! I can’t wait to read more about their past. I also love the duel POV! I will say reading about Rowman is a bit tricky at first. Overall it’s mostly done in a very smooth way so you can follow along if you’re paying attention.

There is a good about of spelling errors which normally I don’t mind in my books. But if that’s something that really bugs you be warned. It definitely needs a good edit. But I don’t think it really takes away from the overall experience of the book.

Impressed.

Hidden gem. I enjoyed the storyline. if you love yourself a long enjoyable read, Then this book is definitely for you. Unfortunately, I get bored if a story drags on to much. But its not necessarily a bad thing for some readers. this feels like a first time author, and although I would have liked more world building and information about the paranormal community. I'm still impressed with how the author caught my undivided attention. I have to point out that you definitely need a proof reader and editor asap. Lots of mistakes. But it wasn't a very big deal for me in the end.

Magical

This was a longer read for me but it’s really worth it. Sage is a human who attends the University her father chose for her in his will. While there she learns she is not just human but an arcane species. She meets 4 men at the University who take an instant interest in her. Sage starts receiving threatening letters and gifts and her men are concerned and call in the equivalent of the Arcane FBI. Sage is kidnapped, leading Rowan, Dante, Maddox, Aidan and Caden to rescue her. There was no real cliffhanger here so I’m not sure if it’s a standalone or part of a series. It’s packed full of spicy scenes. Definitely a great read!

I really liked the premise of this book but the execution was meh. It started out with a flow problem which seemed to correct itself about 15% of the way in, I almost DNFed. After the guys entered the picture I started liking the characters and the addition of Rowan was a good choice. I started to enjoy this book but then it also seemed to drag a bit. I know there's currently 2 more books out with a 4th in the works, I honestly don't know if I'll keep going though. After Sage slept with the twins it sorta became more about smexy time or being turned on or 2 of the guys being able to smell her desire. Then Sage is all of a sudden blushing all the time 🙄. I don't want to call repetitive and predictable but yeah.....
