Fires that curse, fires that heal, And all the while, so turns the wheel...
With the Queen of Merawuld confined to her bed and the city of Tyllcarric in the iron grasp of the High Mage, war is closing in on all horizons for Ash and Senan. Hellbent on eliminating any threats to the fae throne, Kiarda of Veshlir has raised an army to claim her prize — and she will not be stopped.
Meanwhile, across the border, change is afoot in Estilleon.
Thalion’s men are ready for rebellion, but when the first rush of power ends, he finds himself forced to toe the line between strength and brutality. By his side, Laeli is a stranger in the human world — caught between love and loyalty in a land that stifles her voice.
As conflict escalates across the land of Aileryan, those with power clash amidst a sea of ideals, dreams and greed, forcing the most battle-scarred to overcome their demons and prove they are a force to be reckoned with.
For that which has been dormant for so long is about to burst forth, and when the winter solstice arrives, all will be at the mercy of the Gods...
Kate Schumacher writes epic fantasy with romance subplots, complex politics and vast, sprawling worlds filled with myth and magic and faeries. These are worlds you can get lost in, worlds where you will find fierce female characters who don't need saving, and men who support them. You will find flawed, reluctant heroes, Celtic myth, power-hungry villains, complicated alliances and a cast of relatable characters.
Kate's writing is influenced by history, sociology, philosophy and mythology, and by politics. She writes multiple point of view stories with individual plot lines that interweave at different points throughout the narrative. Kate never intends this either - her characters are just bossy and rude and all have things to say.

Oh, this sequel! I was so happy to be back to this amazing, magical world again, but also a bit sad as the saga ends with this book. I admire the writer's talent to weave a great story with many fantastic characters I will remember & love forever. This duology is definitely belongs to my re-read book shelve!
"Heart of Flame" picks where the first book ends. There are so many things happening, and I find in hard to choose whose storyline was my favourite. I cared so much about Ash, Thalion & Laeli, Jarlah and Fox. I write my words about them and see their faces like I knew these people or at least met them once. I think this series could make a great motion picture with all that action, twists and passion between the characters.
I was happy with the book ending. However, I think Ash could have more adventures on her path with all that power she finally commenced at her possession. I would certainly read more stories about her.
Overall, it is a solid five stars from me as a high fantasy sucker. If you seek a series that will take you for a journey into a magical world full of amazing creatures and North vibes, look no further!
Buckle up! The world building is epic and large! I actually really enjoyed the multiple PoV! So many kicka$$ female characters and I loved them all!! It felt like I was watching LotR epic adventure and battles! The battles are so well written!! There's romance, magic, political intrigue, danger, action, friendships - basically everything you want in epic fantasy! So fantastic!!
Heart of Flame is the conclusion to The Fires of Aileryan duology which started with Shadow of Fire. This book was perfect in every way. I was torn between racing through it and not wanting it to end because I didn’t want to leave this world that Kate has built.
Heart of Flame picks up right where Shadow of Fire left off. I don’t want to give too much away as it will spoil Shadow of Fire. Laeli, the Fae Princess and Thalion were my absolute favourites and I loved the way Kate developed their relationship in book 2. They did threaten to take over and dominate this book (which I would not have minded) and you can tell by the writing that Kate loved to write these characters, full of snippy comments, witty banter and love. Laeli and Thalion must struggle to find a way forward for each of their people that does not result in the destruction of both. Ash, Jarlath, Fox and Senan must also battle their own demons or die trying.
Kate has written an in depth world, full of well developed and rich characters. The writing is an absolute delight to read. The multiple POVs work well and I liked that we spent time with each of them, whether they were together or apart.
I am very sad to leave this world but looking forward to picking up the next book from Kate.
A thrilling, satisfying conclusion. What I loved about this book was how we spent a good deal of time with the MCs, getting to know them and their motivations on a deeper level. This was something I felt Shadow of Fire missed out on a bit, but it was certainly made up for here!
Thalion and Laeli took centre stage in book 2, and I am NOT complaining. They both had amazing arcs, individually and together, and we could see so clearly how they influenced the characters around them.
With magic and meddling gods, battles and political scheming, there's something here for everyone. I recommend you give this duology a shot!!
I'd honestly all but forgotten about this series but a book sale offer on Kindle by the author gave me the impetus to read the second half of this duology...
A thoroughly enjoyable conclusion to the series, as the disparate gathering of heroes battle to save their world from the grasp of corrupt, power hungry tyrants... Glad to see Ash and Jarlath finally get together, and the relationship between Thalion and Laeli is one of the better human/elf pairings I've encountered since the writing of Tolkien (enough to overcome my usual aversion to such things). The death scenes of the villains were so deliciously satisfying (not enjoyed reading about people dying helplessly at a feast since the Red Wedding)... Another gripping indie fantasy read from Kate Schumacher...
If I wanted to keep this review short, I would need two words only - infinity stars! But, when it comes to Heart of Flame, book 2 in The Fires of Aileryan series by Kate Schumacher, I cannot write a short review, it simply wouldn't do justice to this masterpiece.
The second book of the duology is just as good as the first one, if not better. As I've said previously, I've never encountered multiple POVs fantasy executed as masterfully as Kate has done. This type of multiple POVs, especially in high fantasy, gives us readers so much more depth and a better understanding of the characters and their motives.
The story is so good, so intense and so beautifully done that I didn't know what to do with myself - at the same time I wanted to savor and devour each and every line of every page. I love how Kate managed to weave a tapestry of political intrigue, thirst for revenge, anger, manipulation, desire to do and be better, to destroy oppression, to still hope, and of course, love and devotion. Romance is a subplot in the series, but it is so so good. I actually love there is no true spice, just scenes shown with the right amount of steam.
Thaleon and Laeli are the focus of the second book, and their story of love, devotion, and need for change and growth is one of the best love stories ever written. We follow them in their quest to make this right and fight for justice in a world full of injustice, together with others who share those same goals. Ash, the fire caster, is one of my favorite female characters - the way she tries and manages at last to accept herself and who she is, and how she finds her inner courage to do what needs to be done is truly commendable. And I love the way Jarlath grows in this book, too. He is set on a difficult path (won't spoil it) but in the end, he emerges stronger and surer of himself and his wants and needs. Senan, oh Senan, how I love him! A quiet yet strong character who always sees the good in others and tries to do what he feels is right. I hope, no, I know he's found his peace and is living his life the way he's supposed to, tranquil and happy, surrounded by love. Should I say with whom or you can guess? :) Mahelivar, another of those I was rooting for also finds his confidence and the path he was supposed to take, and I was so happy for him!
I think it is obvious how much I connected with the characters and immersed myself in the story. It's impossible not to! It is a high fantasy of a world shared by humans and fae, full of political intrigue, desire for revenge, need to conquer and rule, the world of magic and old gods (who do like to interfere, I must say), but it is so much more than that. The Fires of Ailerayan is a story of self-acceptance, self-growth, immeasurable need to do and be better for yourself and for those you love, a story of a dream of a better world packed in a beautifully written duology you have to read.
Be still my beating heart! For a number of reasons. Firstly one word, needs no other explanation if you have read Shadow of Fire, if you haven't this is one of the best reasons you should: Thalion Then Thalion and Leali, a love story for the ages, a love story fit for this epic fantasy. Then the stress of it all! Right from the very first page, I was on the edge of my seat with worry for my favorite characters. Such confrontations, such danger, so many risky moments that could end in disaster!!!! I am not going to give anything away, but if you have a heart condition, this may be something you should consider before beginning this book. Suffice to say, I endured and once I found myself reading the last sentence, I sat in silence and immediately wanted to begin again. To be able to take in every word and savor every moment with these characters I have come to love.
More time spent in the land of Estilleon with Thalion and Laeli was pure delight. Theirs is THE story for the time. The ultimate enemies to lovers of Titanic proportions. An Academy award in the making for the movie version of this duology. (Though I think it should be a series, there is just too much that happens for it to be squeezed into 2 hours. )
Even so, this is a love story that is totally believable and not overly dramatic or ridiculously soppy. Both these characters are strong, fearless, fierce and downright scary at times, but in their love for each other, the softer, gentler side shines forth, giving them that extra depth you can admire and adore.
Despite time spent on the events in Estilleon, just as you are wondering how everyone else is faring, Kate brings our other players back into our lives. Each one of the characters developed so much more in this book. They grew in themselves, their abilities and strengths as well as important participants in this story. I love that it was up to a character who at the beginning thought they were a nobody, nothing special with a fairly mundane future ahead of them, who became the one everyone looked to to save them. That they found some power within and became something remarkable. Though everyone worked together and fought to make the world a better place. This story has such a strong cast of characters, each as important as the next, without who, the story could not be told. This is one of the great strengths of this book.
This is both a plot and character driven book. The story line is epic, full of battles, schemes, deception, magic, tragedy and violence. But it is the characters that lift the plot to another level. It is the characters that you worry and hope for and the need to see them succeed that keeps you reading. Each one is so different from the others. Each one compliments the others and together theirs is a story full of strength, support, belief and love amidst the terrible events unfolding.
The seasons and the environment are almost characters in themselves. They are a huge influence on the main characters and the changing seasons fully illustrate the mood of the story. The diverse landscapes of this world Kate has created add to the beauty of the story and become integral to its telling.
If you love epic fantasy, magic, political intrigue, deception, revenge, enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, friendship, fighting injustice and prejudice, good versus greedy than you must read this duology. A story you will want to read in one sitting and one that you will not want to end. A story whose characters will become your friends and enemies and remain long after you have closed the pages of the book. It is the strength and resilience of the characters in those times when all appears lost that make them truly remarkable and memorable.
I am eternally grateful that, thanks to the generosity of Kate Schumacher, I was given an e-ARC of Heart of Flame! This NA fantasy brings us to the end of an adventure that started in Shadow of Fire, & it was everything I could ever want.
In Heart of Flame, the Queen of Merawuld is still held hostage by Gedeon, the power hungry High Mage. Ash & Senan are in hiding while they plan their next step, & Kiarda is gaining control over the fae lands, despite Mahelivar’s attempts to break free. Power is running rampant as the wheel continues to turn…
There were so many threads to this story’s tapestry, & every single one of them was a vibrant colour. Kate builds so much tension into Heart of Flame I would’ve held my breath forever, if my body hadn’t worked on autopilot! As the noose tightened, inch by inch, I was a captive audience to everything that unfolded. This is epic writing at its magical best.
Kate had a lot of characters & POVs to juggle in this story, but it was so elegantly done. I also love that certain events dictated we saw more of what was inside these characters, right down to their fiery, gritty core. It’s not enough to see what someone is like when they have hope. It’s when they’re broken that you truly see what someone is made of; to endure is a victory.
If you love a world of magic, uneasy alliances & brave heroines? You need to read my full review & pre-order yourself a copy! You can head to my blog via this link: https://www.immersedinbooks.com/heart...
Kate does NOT disappointed with this action packed conclusion to her debut duology. If she had given us political intrigue and mystical mythology before, she delivers a double dose with Heart of Flame. I don’t like giving away plot in reviews, but suffice to say, she took everything that was good about the first book and made it better in this one.
There’s something so real about her characters that by the end I felt like I actually knew them. Their pain was my pain! Their victories were my victories. I learned through Kate’s writing that sometimes a bad guy can be terrible in every way, and still, somehow your favorite character. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted the baddies to get what they deserve, but I enjoyed every moment with them.
If you are on the fence about reading an epic fantasy romance, this is a good start. I’m not a huge romance reader, but this…this is just pure high fantasy gold, with everything good about a love story, framed by devious plotters and bloody battles.
Yessss! It all came together so well. I finished the first book last night and immediately started this one. Tons of character growth, a fantastic political plot, beautiful imagery. I really enjoyed it and loved the way it all wrapped up. Fantastic!
Such a great set and so full of lore. This was an excellent series and I’m sad to see it end. I will definitely be looking at more of this writer’s work.
What a stellar conclusion to an amazing duology by Aussie indie author Kate Schumacher! Heart of Flame picks up where Shadow of Fire left off, with several kingdoms on the verge of war and destruction, all because of a greedy, vengeful few. We once again have a whole host of perspectives, however this is easy to follow by now as we have learned who all of these characters are. We have Ash the firecaster, trying to figure out how best to use her powers and help those she cares for. There's Jarlath, her best friend who thinks leaving will give Ash the best chance to flourish. Laili is the princess of the fae, in denial about her feelings for the very human and very hunky Thalion, trying to escape his father's yoke. Mehelivar is poised to become king of the fae, but for the schemes of one ice queen, determined to exact revenge on the family who banished her. We have Fox (one of my faves), an assassin trying to free herself, and Senan the anomaly, who wants to help the humans escape the machinations of Gedeon, the power crazed high mage who will stop at nothing to rule the human realm. Phew that is quite the cast! And that's not even mentioning the scheming gods!
The prose in this story is simply beautiful, full of rich description, painting vivid pictures and pulling you right into the story. The world was detailed and each of the different settings stood out for it's own reason, giving further depth to the story. The characters are all really well developed, each with their own personalities, flaws and motivations. I particularly love that we get to see the characters in a variety of combinations throughout the book, interacting with each other and moving the story forward rather that staying stagnant in their own little cliques.
For her debut duology, I can't imagine Kate could have done any better. This duology is simply beautiful and a must read for fans of epic fantasy, lovers of tropes like multiple POV, only one bed, enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, meddling gods, elemental magic, and strong female characters! Give it a go, you won't be disappointed!
I thoroughly enjoyed the high stakes and that the gears were ever turning, as the situation throughout the world of Aileryan became more dire for each player on the field. The world itself has hard magic rules which I tend to favour so may be a tad biased. There were no cheap tricks to get out of the dire climactic situation, unlike most fantasy. Just honest problem solving and using each character's uniquely developed strengths. The writing itself was immersive and easy to lose yourself in, to the point where my fiancée would try to talk to me while I read and I'd jump when she spoke 😅
Characters were fully fledged and we got good insight into each individual to not only understand each one but also watch them grow throughout the coming war. Thalion is a character I greatly admired for his inner turmoil and resilience, while Laeli is opinionated yet willing to listen to reason which spoke to me. Jarlath keeps proving to himself that he is more than the simple farm boy he always dismissed himself as. And poor Ash absolutely has my heart as the girl who keeps getting knocked down and stands up time and time again.
Schumacher's tale of good versus evil, selflessness versus greed has a bit of everything in it. Adventure, magic, sweeping landscapes, swashbuckling, battles, mythical creatures, and flawed but realistic characters.
This book was perfectly penned from beginning to end. The villains were multifaceted. Their motives and backstories showed just how easy it would be for any of us to fall. The heroes weren't perfect. They all had darkness within them that they had to overcome.
Even when things looked bleak, there was hope woven throughout.
I would like to thank R&R Book Tours and Kate Schumacher for giving me a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
A great conclusion to the Fires of Aileryan Duology. Schumacher delivers with political intrigue, love, war and all the grey areas in between. I think most people will be pleased with this ending. The author knows that I would have liked my heart to break a little more, but the importance of the characters to the entire world meant more than pulling on a heart string or three. Laeli was my favourite in the end. I really enjoy reading women who take no prisoners for noble causes like freedom, love, union. I will wait until Thalion gets eaten by a bear so she can take her rightful place next to me. For High fantasy lovers from an author who knows how to write properly. Go get some.
Do you feel like reading a complete duology, filled with magic, romance, fae, political aliances and betrayals? Well now you can 😄
This duology has a vast cast of characters- the rulers of 3 kingdoms, 6 (couples of) characters doing all the heroics AND 3 old gods playing with all their fates! They all get their point of view, and I especially loved when we saw behind the scenes in the gods' plans for all mortals, human and fae alike. The romances are swoon-worthy and I couldn't put the book down until I found out the resolution to all their fates.
“ Then be the animal. Let him out. Be fierce and be steered by your instinct. Be enraged. Fight. You’ve been gutted, your insides thrown to the wind, but if you let your pain devour you, you can’t let it fuel you.” Thalion p. 151
“Surely,we, people I mean, are more than violent beings succumbing to our own selfish desires? We should aspire to more than power over others, or, if we do have power, we need to use it in different ways. It doesn’t always need to be a toll of oppression.” Thalion p.34
How did a books over 500 pages go so quickly? Why couldn’t it last longer, I wish I was still in Aileryan. This BOOK, this Series. Gah. I had to pre write my review because my brain is mildly broken. This is the first book I’ve actively taken notes while reading since I was in high school! I’ve been following these character for four days now, I’ve been on the edge of my seat waiting to see how it would end. I was not let down. Fantasy novels are so ripe with imagery of otherworldly lands, I think what makes this book so compelling is that unlike some fantasy novels where you get bogged down with specific characters or locations, Schumacher has this ability to move the plot at a pace that keeps you not only interested but desperate to keep going. The sheer magnitude of characters could have been hard to follow but everyone has their time and their purpose, I love Yasper, I didn’t think I’d see much of him after Shadow of Fire and then here he is and it felt right. Kiarda, I wanted to hate her but she had dimensions, as they say every villain is the hero of their own story and I think that’s so true of her character. Wrong things for what she felt where the right reasons. I could go on about all of them; Ash finding herself, embracing her power, being comfortable in her skin, accepting her differences. Senan the gentle badass. Sweet, loyal Jarlath. Thalion and Laeli, the sweet snarky relationship at the center of it all. Enemies to lovers become the badass couple you best not mess with. “ As to why I love her, how can I not? Sometimes, I feel that everything I’ve ever done in my life led me to that night in the forest.” Thalion p34 I adored them, I’ll miss them. Once again I say thank you Kate Schumacher. I bid the world of Alieryan adieu, for now. I’ll come back I’m sure. Often.

The second book in the Fires of Aileryan duology continues seamlessly from the first book. It’s a longer book but didn’t feel long since it’s such a fast page-turning read. It follows the characters introduced in Shadow of Fire and brings together the intricate plotlines set up in that book. Like the first volume of the duology, it’s terribly well written, with some brilliant fight scenes. The relationship between the main characters, the gorgeous Thalion and fiery Laeli, deepens and the promised relationship between Ash and Jarleth is consummated (literally), but not before a lot of doubt and heartache. Evil is defeated, but not without cost, and a new order established. As with any good book, I wanted more, particularly to learn more about certain characters, such as the enigmatic Mahelivar The relationship between Sinan and Fox was also intriguing and I’d like to have seen more of that, but it’s already a big book, so maybe there will be a sequel one day. A highly recommended NA fantasy which will be loved by anyone who enjoyed Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows Duology.
Very strong finish to the series. It ended up going a different way than I anticipated but in a good way. The romance between 2 of the main characters ended up being a pretty compelling part of the story, which I enjoyed a lot.
I think some chapters were perhaps in there just to keep your mind fresh on all the many characters in the story, but some of those chapters could have been edited out to make it a tighter read.
If you are a fan of SJM’s Throne of Glass series this could be a good match for you. A lot of characters, multiple POV, politics, fae, witches/mages, etc. It does have some graphic violence/torture but not any more than I recall in many other fantasy novels and it doesn’t bother me, but it may others.
Definitely going to be checking out more from Schumacher in the future.
These books were so amazing, I picked the first one up at the start of the year and was so excited to find out the author was a local to my town!
The writing is so beautiful, how everything is described and how the characters are portrayed. Even with a huge amount of POV’s each character is completely unique with their own flaws and strengths and each has their own voice.
The storyline’s and arcs blended perfectly and wrapped up in a good place, I just wish there was more! I wasn’t quite ready to let go of some of my favourite characters like Thalion and Leali.
I can’t wait to keep reading your work Kate and love to be supporting a local author. As someone trying to get started in writing your work seriously amazes me 🩷
So, I did not think this was duology. I just plain forgot. But this book was a great conclusion! Everyone’s stories was wrapped up so nicely and I love when that happens. I was left satisfied!
🔥Kate Schumacher's world in this duology was breathtakingly well laid out for readers. With multiple POVs, I got to see every beautiful and deprave thing that went on. Ash, Jarlah & Fox and Thalion & Laeli are characters you won't soon forget about!
🔥I felt like I was reading Game Of Thrones level fantasy but with a female authors air about it!
🔥The characters all developed so well over the duology and each storyline was interesting enough that I didn't want to put the books down. These are definitely fantasy books that you have to be ready for! It takes a bit to get into the world with full understanding of places and characters, but once you get your head around that, it's an amazing ride!
🔥 Forbidden fire magic that comes out at the worst time 🔥Rescue missions 🔥Friends to lovers 🔥Epic love story (book two) 🔥Witches, fae, mages 🔥Politics & war 🔥Romance
There's such a collective of characters here, all having an important role in this last book - but Thalion and Laeli are most definitely this story's core. So many emotions on this road for them.
A brilliant conclusion, and excellenty written. The world building was stunning - you felt that bone chilling cold, that muggy damp humidity, that dry fire. You saw the moments of magic before you. Nothing was left on the table here.
I didn’t dislike this book but I also could’ve skipped it. Honestly, it felt like a bunch of stuff just happened, like suddenly characters would be in a completely different place and headspace, and I think for me that was because there were so many characters to keep track of and follow their individual stories.
You know those books that get you so twisted and full of emotions that your body physically reacts to characters. This is one of them.
You know those books that are written so well, that hook you straight away that you need to keep reading to find out what happens next. This is one of them.
You know those books that you want to get to the end, to feel the climax, to see evil get their just deserves, but you also don't want the journey to end. This is one of them.
Kate writes beautifully descriptive characters that you can't help but love them, feel for them and feel so attached is like this life long companions. She also writes characters with souls so twisted, so evil, so greedy and mean that you feel a bone depth hatred.
A wonderfully written story full of character development, of learning to accept yourself and allowing yourself that acceptance and knowledge of how far would you go to protect what's right, even if you have to do things that may sit well with you but what needs to be done. Through in some spice and some romance and you've got it all.
And the bad guys, so evil, so ruthless in their pursuit of their own gains without caring who or what they have to hurt to get what they want. Written so well that I had a physical reaction each time they reached a new level of evil. But written so well that you, and their belief in themselves , that you, yourself are almost as convinced as they are that their way is right.
I loved this book from beginning to end. I needed to get to the end, but at the same time I didn't want the story to end.
Political plotting, maneuvers and counter moves, stadium fighting, fae, humans, halflings, assassin's, devotion, power, friendship good vs evil. This book does not disappoint.
The second book of this duology is just as thrilling as the first. All the moving parts of the story finally come together to give a conclusion that wrapped things up nicely.
At first I though Ash was the star of this show but honestly, it’s Laeli. I love her character.
All of the characters have so much depth, even the bad guys
I appreciate how within this fantasy world, death isn’t taken lightly- well by some, yes. But for most, even the soldiers, they’re affected by having to kill (for example Jarlathe). It’s unlike so many other fantasy stories where killing is just the norm.
I have 2.. issues? They’re not really issues, more like desires 1- I wish the ending with Gedeon, the blood stones and Darian was more.. thrilling? Had more bang? These things were a big deal especially towards Ash but in the end, it was all handled a bit too easily imo 2- Darian needed a bit more info. He’s the only Spirit Rake so he needed more of a story/back story. That was a missed opportunity to add more to the story as a whole.
I feel like this should have been at least 3 books tbh, so things could be drawn out a bit more. This world is so impressive and detailed. I just wanted even more. It could have slowed down the pace a tiny bit as well, so we got just a bit more.
None of this affected my rating though! I really enjoyed these books and I will for sure be re-reading them. I found myself not wanting to read, as I got closer to the end.. simply because I didn’t want it to end! I’m sad I’m out of this world.
Also, the land acknowledgement at the end? Much respect for that, as a Canadian living on unceded Indigenous land.
Epic! Oh my goodness Book 2 solidified this series for me as EPIC. I will 100% be re-reading this series again.
Book 2 was MUCH easier for me to follow all the POV’s as I’d established a map in my mind from book 1. Also it helped (me) that we stayed with the couples for longer and a few of the gang had grouped together by this point so It was much easier for me to keep up.
Satisfying conclusion, completed series, epic adventure with action, romance, banter, friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, accidental savior to lovers, trauma, heartbreak, magic,Fierce AF Females, villains that are HATED. Just Epic!
More people need to read this and experience it for themselves.
Also, While there is no on page explicit spice, this book has some heat, the emotional connections between the characters is off the charts and the story is definitely not lacking in steamy moments. I was blushing. Explicit detail was not needed, the tension, devotion, heat, was all there on the page. It was HOT!
This year I decided that I would try to get back into reading books, so I got myself a library membership and spent 20 minutes searching for the perfect book. I hadn’t picked up a book since high school. The covers of Shadow of Fire and Heart of Flame caught my attention and after reading their blurbs I thought… Wow, I have to read these. I was hooked from page one, and fell in love with the characters, the world of Aileryan and the way they were brought to life. When I discovered the author was a Northern NSW local, I loved the series even more. I have just finished Heart of Flame today, and it’s safe to say my imagination has been reawakened. I can’t wait to read your other series and I am so excited that you are continuing to write and create new stories. Your plots are so well thought through, your writing so descriptive, and the characters take on a life of their own. It truly transports you to another world. Thank you so so much for creating. I can’t wait to read more.
This book seems like an early novel. It was perfunctory. Lots of telling rather than showing, especially with the journeys to and fro. There was quite a bit of love making, an area the author clearly feels comfortable in, but the world building and story needed more work.
Characters did things that didn’t make a lot of sense given their places in the world. Plus, the main character seemed to get sidelined for the romance of one of the other couples.
The torture and cruelty exhibited by main ‘good’ characters was a bit weird.
There were places where I felt words were over-used and other descriptive words didn’t feel appropriate. Plus there were some words that weren’t correct English grammar usage.
Overall, I felt that the ideas were good but the execution lacked and an experienced editor would have helped.
Heart of Flame is the perfect ending to this exciting series. From the intensity to the drama, Kate has crafted a fantastic story that is both thrilling and impressive. I loved the characters and their storylines, this is truly a well done fantasy read. I can highly recommend this series as well as Kate’s other works.
