Face it, Tiger, you just hit the double jackpot! Two of the greatest loves of Peter Parker's life find themselves thrown into one another's paths and straight into Limbo! But as the events of DARK WEB put them through hell, Felicia Hardy has a secret she's in no rush to share about the new (old) man in her life…Peter Parker! And MJ's hiding something, Somehow, she has super-powers?! Our dazzling duo soon finds themselves at the mercy of the diabolical Belasco! And if they don't come clean with one another, they could be stuck in Limbo forever - because Felicia's guilty conscience is playing havoc with her escape plan! The Black Cat's ultimate the mask of Doctor Doom!
7.4/10 Mary Jane and Felicity are in trouble. They are stuck in Limbo. Only way out? To team-up and go on a quest. I would definitely read more M.J. and Black cat adventures. They are a great team. They both have strong personalities and maybe some secrets? That creates an interesting dynamic between the duo.
It's fantastic to see Black Cat and Mary Jane teaming up again! After the delightful one-shot Mary Jane/Black Cat Beyond, which I absolutely loved for its action-packed team-up and Black Cat's... ahem... enthusiastic appreciation for Mary Jane, I was eager for more. (Dump Trunk Ass BABY!)
While their appearance in the much maligned Dark Web event might have raised some eyebrows, thankfully, their story here feels separate from the broader narrative. Instead of getting bogged down in clone drama or city-wide conflicts, we're treated to a wild ride as Mary Jane and Black Cat find themselves unexpectedly in Hell. Their alliance with a demon to find their way back to their loved ones makes for a surprisingly fun and fast-paced read. Jed McKay truly shines in his portrayal of Black Cat, delivering some fantastic dialogue.
This comic isn't aiming for Eisner glory, but sometimes you just need a fun, slightly silly adventure, and this one definitely delivers. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5, rounding up to a 4 for sheer entertainment value.
3.5 stars. So this takes place during the Dark Web event. MJ and Felicia get taken to Limbo. There, Belasco tells them that if they can retrieve his soulsword from this tower, he will send them home. Let the adventure begin. This isn’t anything major or hitting any milestones but it was a fun romp. MacKay does some cool stuff with MJ’s jackpot powers and Black Cat’s bad luck powers. Plus we get an appearance from a limbo favorite. A solid book.
I haven't read the main series where I'm sure it actually explains wtf is going on here so I was very confused lmao. All the references to things that happened before. 😭
Lots of fighting and weird demons in Limbo, MJ has superpowers now, Felicity is with Peter but scared to tell MJ because they are besties.
Wait did you know that MJ has kids?? Dude she has kids. She has to go home to the kids that she has. I heard it the first time she said it but please remind me again of the kids that she has to get home to!!!
I gotta say MJ's random power thing was cool, I loved how it tied into Felicity's power and it was so fun how it could either be godlike powers or she just controls pudding. Everybody's so creative.
I love the Felicity & MJ friendship duo a lot BUT I really wanted them to kiss and tell both the men to fuck off. ✌️
The ~drama~ of Felicity dating their shared ex Peter and being too scared to tell MJ because they are friends was so immature like are we in high school? MJ moved the fuck on apparently?? Why are you stressing girl.
The art could have been worse but whoever was drawing was horny and you could tell. The girls AND the demons looked very sus. 🤨
Although I read the Black Cat Omnibus earlier this year (you can absolutely check my review out if you want to) I had learned that this had released a bit after Mackay had finished doing Cat’s first ongoing. Felicia Hardy quickly grew to be one of my favorite characters, and while I was disappointed to think that this may get collected in a newer, updated version of the Black Cat Omni, I realized that it’s not really necessary.
This is a self contained thing that had to do with the “Dark Web” event. Felicia and Mary Jane Watson travel to Hell and have to help a demon named Belasco to secure a sword from a tower called “the Screaming Tower.” Upon obtaining this blade, you essentially become the ruler of Hell.
MJ has two children and is with a guy named Paul. We’d learn later that a lot of this stuff is different than what we’re led to believe in this book, but because of Paul, she has the ability to play Slots with this wrist band thing. Depending on the combination of symbols, she gets a certain power. It goes back to her line “Face it Tiger, you just hit the Jackpot,” because, well, she’s now the character “Jackpot.”
This is really, really, frustrating to read.
And it’s frustrating because of all the stuff that orbits this. Felicia is dating Peter Parker again, and MJ has all of this stuff going on, and it’s just not really fun to think about these characters and their status quos. I think, because most of my omnibuses go up to 2021, there’s a certain stopping point in the mainline marvel continuity where, after that, I don’t really wanna check it out. I was following ASM briefly during the time of “Dark Web” and I just did not like the way some of these characters were changed. The ever-loving desire to keep MJ around and yet the unwillingness to change her in ways that suit the character makes her not that fun to read, and yet Mackay has written her the best out of other writers in this current era.
Black Cat is great though. And the art is awesome to look at. I really liked the demon designs and the continuation of Black Cat’s abilities. Mackay is also great at dialogue and trying to make bad situations work.
But I just did not like the whole sort of “story” that exists around these characters, which made this (albeit fast) read pretty frustrating when I had to put the book down for something.
I'll be the first (and not the last) to admit that Dark Web was mostly a disaster, so I went into Mary Jane & Black Cat with some trepidation. Surprise! It's great! Honestly, it's just an excuse for Jed MacKay to keep his Black Cat series going. Keep on coming up with those excuses, Marvel!
So, Black Cat and Mary Jane are zapped to Limbo, where they team up with Sym to fetch a doodad for the current demon king of Limbo upon the promise that he'll return them home. The Limbo stuff is sorta related to Dark Web, as is the annoying "New York City invaded by Hell" intro issue, but everything else is pure heist, baby! That's where Black Cat shines. Also oddly shining: Mary Jane, who for some reason has jackpot machine superpowers. Neat!
This volume won't upset the Marvel universe, but it's certainly a fun trifle that's a blast to read whether or not you skipped Dark Web.
This offshoot of the "Dark Web" event provides lots of fast paced demon bashing fun as Mary Jane and Black Cat find themselves fighting for their lives in Limbo. The two main characters pair nicely in this book as they navigate their growing friendship and move beyond both having the same ex-boyfriend. Expect more than a few twists, some new tricks from Mary Jane and lots and lots of demons and other super-natural baddies.
Four and a half out of five stars rounded to four.
A fun, amusing read that plays like another episode of Jed Mackay’s Black Cat run, which is absolutely a good thing. Better than the big crossover it attaches to, that’s for sure.
I started this because of the Dark Web story but I kept reading because against all odds I ended up liking it. I don’t care much for Spider-Man and his associated characters, I just think they’re overplayed and overrated and Marvel milks them too hard. But this was fun, and Mary Jane with powers is a nice new addition to Marvel. Her powers are quite interesting but I like them. It keeps things tense on when she should use them. Seeing these two kick ass across Limbo was a lot of fun.
Felicia and Mary Jane head to Limbo as part of Dark Web, and only by working together can they escape! But of course, Belasco, deposed ruler of Limbo, has plans for our femme fatales...
Look, this is Jed Mackay returning to Black Cat yet again, and it's just...can this guy get an ongoing again? Because this is just as good as what came before, and I want to read him writing Felicia forever. Adding MJ to the mix, especially with her new superpowers, is just a recipe for success, and even in a location like Limbo, both ladies get the chance to shine and do what they do best.
On art is Marvel newcomer (I think?) Vincenzo Carratu, who does some great work illustrating the locales of Limbo and Mary Jane's various superpowers. Black Cat's never had huge name artists on it, but it always gets lovely visuals nonetheless.
Is this Dark Web essential? Absolutely not. But if you like what Mackay's done with Felicia before, then this is more of the same, which is always something to crow about.
The Dark Web bleeds over into another miniseries with MJ and Black Cat. Trapped in Limbo, they're forced to steal something for Belasco. Felicia hasn't told MJ about her feelings for Peter, so she's got to juggle the heist and telling her friend that she has feelings for her ex. All that, plus keeping an eye out for the other looters looking for the same item AND avoid the monster protecting the treasure.
Hope they don't get double crossed. That could never happen, right? ===== This is a fun little miniseries that has Jed MacKay back writing a Black Cat story. You can tell he has that character DOWN. I really liked the updated Felicia. She's more three dimensional and fun. ------------ Bonus: So, MJ isn't Jackpot, but they gave her slot machine powers (read ASM for full details) Bonus Bonus: Earth women have a history of ruling Limbo? Totally forgot how far back that went
When these two get together, you know there's going to plenty of laughs and a fair amount of action. Peter Parker is extremely lucky to have these two ladies in his life. This story takes place during the Dark Web storyline. Asked by Pete to protect MJ and her kids, Black Cat soon finds out that MJ can take care of herself with her new Jackpot, slot machine random powers. The two end up in Limbo (with tons of portals opening all over) and end up taking a mission from Belasco, who will help them get home if they can retrieve his Soulsword from The Screaming Tower. Inside they meet S'ym, who they end up teaming up with to overthrow Belasco and make it home. Plenty of hilarity here. Would love to see them team up again anytime. Recommend.
The art is nice and the camaraderie between the two starlets is fun to read, but I'm not into the demon/Limbo/Hell aspect of these comics. Just not my cup of tea. I always like to expand on the lore of a story I'm reading, to get all the details and see the whole picture, but most of this didn't do much for me. It is neat to see Mary Jane with superpowers and team ups of characters that don't usually end up together are usually welcome.
I seem to be a sucker for earth girls roughing up Limbo.
I really enjoyed this story, probably more than it deserves, but it was such fun to see the relationship of these two (and their new acquaintances). I love the humor that the story brings in. And even Felicia's concerns, which tended to be annoying in the beginning, became relevant to the plot. It had exactly the ending I expected, but that didn't hurt my joy. I want to see more of Red and Cat together.
Jed MacKay is still bent on continuing his Black Cat run by any means necessary, here picking up on the Dark Web event to find Felicia an appropriately bonkers heist in Limbo. Along for the ride, MJ, who has randomised superpowers now apparently, and doesn't know that the Cat is back with their mutual ex. Charming character stuff and icky demonic deathtraps ensue, plus some amusing lampshading of the way everything in Limbo always seems to come back to Earth girls.
Fails the Bechdel test hard - spends WAY too much of the storyline being fixated on Felicia-loves-Peter-and-MJ-doesn’t-know.
It’s a weak premise to create some sitcom-level tension between our two protagonists, rather than put them in a situation that covers that base without antagonising each other. MacKay is a better writer than this.
Aside: is this where MJ suddenly mentions she has the powers that eventually earn her the code name (and ongoing series) “Jackpot”?
Probably the best Dark Web-related project, because of Jed MacKay's involvement. I guess we're never going to know what led to MJ getting married, with 2 kids! Or maybe some of you do know already, but I'm slowly following up via these collections from my local public library. Also, MJ has some weird luck-related powers that I'm pretty sure have not come up before.
Apparently this is a big part of a crossover I have not read, I really just got it because I enjoyed MacKay's other black cat books, But this one was just weird and messy with lots of monsters and demons and confusing character stuff. Just felt out of loop the whole time.
The dialogue and relationship between Mary-Jane and Felicia make this Dark Web tie-in far more enjoyable than you'd expect it to be. The main story is some sort of guff about going on a quest in a demon-infested underworld and it's fine.
