Spider-Man Brand New Day omnibus vol 1

A back to basics Spidey. Nothing new or world changing, just a super decent Spiderman run. With alot of different writers who rotate, and some fantastic artists attached, this was a cool run. Love Romita JR, Chris Bachalo and Marcos Martin to name a few, and the stories from Dan Slott, Zeb Wells, Bob Gale and Marc Guggenheim are super super solid. Peter is living with Aunt May again, struggling to make ends meet, nobody knows he is Spiderman, and he is hated all over once again, working for the Daily Bugle and often unemployed. A couple issues in the end i don't get, a sort of Betty Brant issue about her love life, a couple Jackpot Heavy stories (pff) the issue where he meets Obama, and that issue again but longer, and one issue of Fear Itself which was very pour, but for the rest, great stuff. And the feel of classic Spiderman.

Really a mixed bag, but honestly kind of a high point for the Amazing Spider-Man title in the last 30 years. Is inherently tied to one of the lowest points and one of the worst creative decisions in any mainstream comic ever: One More Day. Despite that, the main Spider-Man title had really needed some shaking up by the time it came around, they just went about it in the worst way possible. ASM had truly had about 30ish great issues when JMS was writing, but other than that had been really bald or genuinely bad since the clone saga.

The good:

- the renewed focus on the supporting cast. This is easily the best part of this era. Peter supporting cast was an essential part of all of the best Spider-Man eras, and whenever the book strays away from this the quality dips.

- renewed focus on non-powered villains. This is another thing that gets lost, but Spider-Man taking on muggers and maggia guys is always great.

- a lot of the team that they bring on is great. Javier Rodriguez. One of my favorite artists ever. Adds so much dynamism to everything he does. The Guggenheim and Kelley issues are very good, they have a great voice for Peter. The Waid issues are also obviously excellent. The spider tracer killer is a great arc. The paper purchase arc is great.

- some of the updates on the status quo that they implement are very good. FEAST is such a great idea for Aunt May and gives her character something to do.

The bad:

- the new villains are pretty much terrible across the board. Grey Goblin, Overdrive, Freak, paper thin. All terrible, very uninspired and boring. All terrible character designs. Makes you miss the classic rogues gallery more and more as they keep introducing these terrible villains.

- certain character aspects of Peter. Yes, he’s supposed to be kind of a flake. But the way he’s written in this makes even the reader struggle to like him. He flakes on his friends, he constantly makes dumb mistakes, he can’t hold a job, he’s borrowing money from his friends. It’s like they amped up him being a loser to a thousand and forgot to equally amplify the redeeming parts. He owes harry osborn thousands of dollars? In the character bible they talk about how he wouldn’t be able to hold a 9-5? Just sucks and is not fun to read.

- Dan Slott. This goes with the point above. Slott really seems to hate Peter. Peter is never more of an over the top cartoon character loser than when Slott writes him. He’s genuinely pathetic when Slott is behind him. He is so simultaneously self pittying but also making every single excuse for why he is such a loser. Insane that out of all these guys he’s the one that got the job.

- Jackpot. Awful! Stupid lazy idea teasing that it was Mary Jane and then it just… wasn’t? It just happened to be another redhead who looked just like her and called Peter Tiger? Design sucks, powers are dumb, and the ultimate resolution of it just being a nobody who injected herself with MGH is so stupid and unsatisfying it’s a shock they even bothered to publish it.

Let’s forget about One More Day and the whole status quo shift for a moment, okay? Yes, things are completely different after Straczynski’s run, and this serves as a new starting point for anyone looking to begin (or continue) reading Spidey’s adventures. And not only is it a new starting point—it’s a fantastic one!

I honestly haven’t had this much fun with a Spider-Man comic in a long time. And surprisingly, I didn’t even mind the rotating writers and artists, which is usually something that bothers me! The best stories undeniably came from Dan Slott, so it’s no surprise that he later took full control of the Amazing Spider-Man series. But the rest of the Spidey Brain Trust also delivered some excellent stories in this omnibus!

This is exactly the Spider-Man we love—a true hero, driven by the weight of responsibility, constantly plagued by bad luck in every aspect of his life—whether it’s his personal life, career, love life, or superhero duties. And through all of that, he never stops being hilarious—I actually laughed out loud multiple times while reading!

The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the Fear Itself tie-in, but aside from that, I have zero complaints. That’s why this omnibus gets a full score from me!

The Amazing Spider-Man serisi 2000'lerde Straczynski'nin kaleminde güneşli günler geçirirken Civil War ile başlayan süreç ve One More Day hikayesiyle sıfırlanan bir Spider-Man. Artık Mary Jane ile Peter ayrılmıştır ve gizli kimliğini kimse bilmiyordur. Üsünden 15 yıldan fazla zaman geçmiş olsa da çizgi roman camiasında hala Spider-Man için sonun başlangıcı olarak One More Day hikayesi kabul görür.

One More Day sonrasında yayınlanan Brand New Day döneminde yazar koltuğuna Dan Slott oturmuş gibi gözükse de aslında birçok yazarın dönem dönem farklı yazarlar da bu dönemde yer alıyor. Kısacası Brand New Day pek isminin karşılığını veren bir dönem değil.

Oh man…where do I start? Brand New Day? More like, Brand New Trash. Dan Slott did not impress me, this felt like a true Sloth of a read, is more like it. In all seriousness, this was a bore to get through…dreadful. Anytime I picked this omnibus up, I couldn’t wait to put it down. There was no point to any of this, the new villains were an absolute waste of pages. Peter seemed like the biggest unreliable herb. He was unlikable on every single page and the thought he was Spider-Man??? Nah. Spider tracers? Menace? Jackpot? Get me the hell out of this era and run on Spidey. This has no true story, nothing gripping or captivating for me to want to turn the page. And then there’s going to be a volume 2 to this atrocity? Oh man, I’m only going to buy it to complete my Spidey Omni collection but I will shit on it any chance I get, I haven’t even read vol 2, as it hasn’t released yet but I know it’ll be absolute trash, just like this introduction volume.

Not to mention the annual with Obama titled Inauguration Day. What a bunch of commie horseshit. Obama was written as this savior that can kick ass and take names, meanwhile…he’d crumble at the thought of a villain and would need all of the avengers to save his fruitcake self.

The art was cool at times. Shame on Slott, Gail and anyone else that’s irrelevant to mention for wasting ink on this disease.
