The Wasp is my favorite female comic character. I'm not even joking.
I think that Janet Van Dyne is just a super fun and interesting character, and though she's not in a ton of books, I just really enjoy her presence in almost everything she's in. Even here, Janet is just super fun, has a great bond with those around her, and is just overwhelmingly kind and understanding.
Which sucks to say that the story is a real snooze fest.
Al Ewing would've been up there with some of my favorite Marvel writers less than 5 years ago, but the more that I read of his work, the less I like. Immortal Hulk is still the greatest Hulk run ever in my opinion (with Peter David's being very close to that), but I haven't really thought any of his other books have gone deep enough or far enough for me to think that the plot is interesting.
I will say he knows Marvel characters really well. Any time I read an Ewing book, characters all feel generally themselves and are never out of character. Here is no different. I loved seeing Jarvis and the special relationship him and Janet have. I think its cool that Janet has an additional father figure in her life after losing her biological father so young. And Nadia, while she isn't really a character I read much about, feels about the same. He covers both the characters traumas before they became the Wasp, and it just.... doesn't really work for me?
As well as the fact that the alien that killed Janet's dad is now running a criminal organization, its silly Marvel 60s sci-fi, but its not really crazy enough or serious enough to capture my interest. I don't know, your mileage might vary but that's where I stand.
As far as the art goes, its not bad. Kasia Niemczyk is a decent enough artist, probably better than what most Marvel artists are these days. The shading isn't amazing, and the book just feels really flat, but besides that, the art renders fun and action packed in only a Marvel way.
If you're a huge Wasp fan, I'd say keep lookin. But if you're in for some fun Marvel stories that pay homage to the old days of Lee and Kirby, maybe pick this up.
