What is the secret of a goose that swallowed a priceless blue gem? How is a woman killed when she is alone in a locked room? Why does a mysterious club only include people with red hair? These puzzles are all solved by the greatest detective the world has ever known in Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes. Adapted from three of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic tales of suspense ( The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, and The Red Headed League) these thrilling mysteries are made accessible to young readers in this fabulous easy to read edition.
Three Sherlock Holmes mysteries are presented in the book: "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", "The Redheaded League" and "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle".
The tales have been simplified from the originals, giving the plot line and highlights of the original tales. I have read the original tales and these present them with enough detail to give the reader the feeling of the time and that fact that it is a mystery, without extraneous descriptions and details.
I read the book in a short time, but can see that it would be a good read for a young reader and easy to enjoy in separate chapters. There are great pen and ink illustrations in the stories to give it a little more life for children graduating from picture books to chapter books. A nice combination in one cover.
This is an awesome second or third grade version of the Sherlock Holmes stories. After reading The 100-Year-Old Secret on an Illinois nominee list this year, they want more Sherlock Holmes in the library! This is perfect - most other versions didn't fit that audience. :-)
My 6 year old nephew started this book and was struggling with some of the language, so I read the book while he was at school one day. I enjoyed the three stories. Some of the concepts were perhaps a wee bit advanced for a 6 year old, so his mom and I are trying to decide whether he should continue the book at this time.
Sherlock Holmes is a book of mysteries and hard decisions Sherlock Holmes had hard decisions and had hard things he had hard mysteries and hard places to find out how he did it but no one knows how his brain was so smart
My son read this book and was hooked on all stories involving Sherlock Holmes. He wanted to discuss the book so I read it. It contained 3 stories/mysteries. A really quick read. I was only able to figure out 1 mystery before the answer was revealed.
This was my favorite book as a kid. It was also the first book I ever bought myself. Simplified stories of Sherlock Holmes brings up so much nostalgia.
Sherlock Holmes was my favorite character. I lved how he used common facts and people he knows to solve his cases. It surprised me that there was 4 completely different cases in the book, and it got a little confusing. I liked all the happy endings in the stories.
This was a fun little collection of Sherlock Holmes shorts. I was hoping for a more robust collection, but this is what the online library collection had available - so, I'm still on the look out for more stories. I may have to purchase something. I digress. I really enjoyed these short stories. They were entertaining and the sketches were beautifully done. I would definitely recommend this if you are looking for something easy to go through before bed. The story begins and ends within 20 pages or so and definitely keeps one engaged. It was fun!
It was mind-boggling how Sherlock Holmes crack all his cases. But then after he explains how it happened, you'll never think that it was easy, or maybe Watson is not just that observant as Sherlock is.
Great adapted text for middle level ELL students. Accessible and high-interest with scaffolding and vocabulary support. Good for studying plot, characterization, and even beginning figurative language.
