Read this over 10 years ago and still remember its dark moodiness. I developed a huge crush on Beethoven as a result of this book. I'm also still determined to see Rodin's bust of Beethoven after Kenton described it so powerfully. Some have described it as a 'spiritual thriller' - I hope this doesn't put it in the same class as Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code. I may need to read it again to make sure I haven't outgrown it.
I read this book maybe 6 years ago and loved it instantly. I still remember the book's dark mood. I think Kenton has done a wonderful job creating a dark mood that blends perfectly well with her language and the story. I hope to re-read this book in a few years. I think you have to be able to embrace the dark mood if you wish to appreciate this book for what it is- a wonderfully written masterpiece.
This book was AMAZING. Why is it so unknown?! I'm in a bit of a daze since finishing, I can't stop thinking about it. It's such a fascinating, immersive and intriguing story. I had no idea what to expect going in. The writing is so beautiful. There are many deep, thought-provoking subjects involved and the author is so thorough, vivid and brilliantly concise in her deliverance and explanations. The story unfolds and sucks you in in such a gripping and secretive way. It really makes you feel like you're involved in something special, and slightly ominous. The characters are well developed and you get to know and feel them.
I find with maybe every 20-30 books I read, there is one that stands out. It flows like a film playing in my head, I remember all the characters and events easily, I CANNOT put the book down, but I HAVE to because I don't want to finish it so soon. This is one of them.
Throughout this engrossing, page-turning thriller, there are a lot of historical facts involved, mixed with theories. I was led down many rabbit holes of mystery on Youtube after googling the conspiracies mentioned in this story. In no way am I a strong believer (or disbeliever since reading this, lol) but it did draw me in, in a kind of Da Vinci Code way, and kept me hooked and interested until the last page. And even after. I'm still obsessing.. One weird thing, I googled one of the conspiracies mentioned in this book, and nothing came up. NOTHING! That gave quite a lot of credibility to what some of the characters were saying. Which freaked me out a bit. Lol I just hope more people read this, you don't need to be a Beethoven fan. I think most thriller/adventure/conspiracy/gothic fans will love it. It's just a very well written, enthralling thriller with a historical/gothic touch. I don't reread many books, but this one I definitely will.
It was hard to get into at first and there were some what I call 'Dry Biscuit' moments too..(hard to swallow!) But persevering with the book, things started to get much more interesting and less drawn out but it took reading it about half way. After that, I was captured by the history and the letters and the characters. I am glad I managed to read the whole thing and not drowning it in the bath.
