The students of South Pines High search desperately for clues, trying to unravel the mystery of what happened on Homecoming night.
Stuck at the First Contact Project facility, Amy and Qiana begin to pull at the threads of a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top of the FCP.
Meanwhile, deep in space, Oliver must come to terms with his new feelings for Amy, and what that may mean for the two of them, and the entirety of the project he’s devoted his life to.
And somewhere, out in the void, The Wanderer watches them all, waiting….
Mystery, romance, and more in the latest volume of Stephen McCranie’s Space Boy!
Stephen McCranie has been drawing comics since before he could read or write. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Fine Arts and currently lives and works out of a small apartment in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
I've read seven books in this series in the last couple weeks, and I have to admit I'm growing increasingly frustrated by the pace of this story. Seven books, and yet I feel like nothing has happened. All the events seem crammed into a handful of days, maybe a week? Except there aren't really events. It's just characters noodling about doing things that have yet to pay off. ~Yawn~
I have the next book on hold at the library already, but I'm thinking right now that may be my jumping off point.
The Foot Code: Tamara seems to be on pointe all the time, Amy whenever she dresses up, and all the girls in skirts when school resumes. So we're back to it being an expression of pure femininity, which is the dullest result. I was pulling for the gravity or alien theories.
Another tasty snack of Space Boy, though the whole "let's investigate the FCP" deal feels like it's going to play out forever. Amy and Qiana found a book in the last volume and now they're investigating a single name inscribed in the book. () Maybe in the next volume they'll actually talk to that person!
Meanwhile, Tammie, Cassie, Schafer, and now Meisha are investigating the homecoming dance after determining that the gardening shed was mysteriously cleaned up after that wild night. Similar to the other plotline, investigation efforts dragggggg.
Finally, Oliver talks to the inventor guy about his feelings for Amy. It's very sweet, I guess, if so, so YA. Ah well, it's all pleasant fluff.
Stephen McCranie's Space Boy Volume 16 by Stephen McCranie continues the story of Amy, Oliver (Space Boy) and their friends. Amy is still a 'prisoner' of the First Contact People, although she is labeled as a special agent in training. She rooms with Qiana who is slowly warming to her. Her watcher, Agent Becker is beginning to warm to Amy as well. (she is the kind of person who gradually wins people over)
Oliver has forgiven Dr. Kim who is trying to help Oliver sort out his feelings for Amy and is also working on a new body for Oliver to move into. Meanwhile, Amy's friends back at the South Pines Academy are continuing to search for clues as to what really happened to Amy. Her friends don't believe that she was killed when their prom was attacked by the masked gunmen. They must try to sort through the fog of misinformation that the FCP has spread.
As always, it's a well crafted story. It moves along quickly from setting to setting and characters to characters. The characters have become 3-dimensional and you develop true feelings for all of them. McCranie has presented an excellent story for both young adults (a friend's 10 year old daughter has become hooked on the series) and adults too. It's that kind of entertaining Sci Fi story. (4.0 stars)
I'm still confused by some of the gendered language in these comics ("Be a man." "Men don't cry." etc.) because I really hope a thousand years in the future we aren't still celebrating toxic attitudes like that, but other than that, I continue to love this series.
A mature, wholesome look at "being the strong one." Amy is deeply empathetic but learns that she needs to take in consideration of her own mental health as well.
I realized I somehow managed to miss several volumes in my reading journey, so I went back to catch the ones I missed. The story definitely makes more sense now, lol.
As expected, fantastic art combines with good story telling for a wonderful read. A few more clues in the saga revealed. Also some additional lessons of wisdom that reflect our world’s current struggles of humanity.
(Full disclosure: I received a free e-ARC for review through Edelweiss.)
As in many of the previous volumes, the story lines in SPACE BOY, VOLUME 16 unfold at a leisurely snail's pace. On the surface, nothing much happens, and yet McCranie manages to elicit ALL THE FEELINGS.
In South Pines High, the students are left reeling by the altercation at prom - particularly Amy's disappearance/presumed death. The newly "rescued" Tamara has become a bit of celebrity, as has Cassie - who believes Tammie when she insists that Amy isn't dead. Along with a reluctant Schaffer and Meisha, the group continues to investigate Amy's disappearance, while another group of students lean into the conspiracy theories and form Truth Seekers Anonymous.
Meanwhile, Amy and Qiana take a deeper dive into the murder of Aleksander Lesnik. A cryptic dedication in his homemade book leads them to Sophi Brix. THE Sophi Brix, wife of and heir to the founder of Net Gear. (This results in one of my favorite exchanges in the book, i.e., Qiana and Amy arguing about whether Lesnik was a gold digger.)
And, struggling with his feelings for Amy, Oliver goes to Dr. Kim for advice - who helps him solve his love life with calculus. (Another favorite panel.)
The only thing I didn't much care for? The return of the Animal Agriculture Club. You're telling me we have 3D printers to make clothing on a whim, but not lab-grown or plant-based meat? Maybe even spit out by said printer? C'mon now.

Here's a breakdown of the episodes contained in each TPB. Sometimes I borrow the books from the library, other times I receive early electronic review copies online - and to bridge the gaps in between, I read the strips on Webtoons. Forever and always do I tear my hair out trying to figure out which strips I missed in between the collected volumes.
I read every volume of this series without fail, knowing that it will be worth my time. That being said, this was a cotton candy volume. Not much there, but sweet. I’m ready for this slow build to end. I want all the shit to hit every fan. I know several climax moments are on the verge of happening and I’m ready! I hope McCranie wallops me with the plot in the next volume.
girl what is up with the feet at first i thought it was boy/girl, then i thought it was just real pants vs dresses/skirts/leggings, but then amy was barefoot at the gym and she HAD FEET ?! what is going on
oliver, put some clothes on !! we do not need to keep seeing this boy in boxers, man. I get it for the end when amy called him in the middle of the night and that’s what he was sleeping in, whatever. but why’s he only got shorts when he’s working out? put on a shirt, man. i don’t care that you’re alone in space, I can see you, and i’m telling you to put on a dang shirt, child!
why was amy like “dark colors aren’t my thing” a couple issues ago cuz like this navy of the fcp uniform looks really good on her, goes super well with her hair. speaking of hair there’s so so many redheads like shaffer(still don’t know how to spell that) and cassie have the exact same hair color despite zero relation. and then there’s amy and it’s like what are the odds this friend group has this many redheads. i’m here for it tho. also dawg i love her tiny pigtails so much PLEASE they’re so cute. they’re so cute. once again i acknowledge the tragic circumstances that led to them but dawg, they’re adorable
i’m very glad the talk between dr. kim and oliver went the way it did. i was so worried about oliver dumping his feelings on this poor girl, but dr. kim also figured that out and had really solid advice. 10/10. and oliver’s dinner was so sweet. only amy could get that guy to wear a suit and pretend to be a waiter lol
dr. kim dawg just make a lesser version of oliver’s robot. the omega crazy “playing God” robot doesn’t need to be the next one. give this boy a robot he’s sick of FaceTime
yes amy… feel your anger… I was like “be mean, amy!” a couple issues ago but i knew even as i typed it that wasn’t really what i meant. Now i know what i meant. Be angry, Amy! You’ve been kidnapped! I get trying to befriend Qiana, but be angry at the FCP! Your friends and family think you’re dead or, at least, KIDNAPPED (which you are), Babe they tried to KILL YOU MULTIPLE TIMES and KIDNAPPED YOU and are HOLDING YOU CAPTIVE and IMPLANTED A TRACKING DEVICE IN YOUR SKIN, all because you dared….to befriend a classmate. like for real?? be angry. be upset. you always try to make the most of things and help other people but babe you have a lot to be upset about and i want you to be able to express that and deal with it instead of burying it and managing everyone else’s emotions. i’m glad you felt that righteous anger of qiana’s. you feel her emotions too often and have to navigate them, so i’m glad you’re getting a break, but it was good for you to feel that anger. because you should be angry. now, you’re amy, so you might get over a lot of this anger way quicker than us mere mortals, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t feel it at all, which is what you were doing earlier. Even Jesus got angry, Ames. just don’t let it turn into bitterness and hate and join the Sith or anything just . allow yourself to feel your negative emotions. you tend to look on the bright side but don’t let yourself get blinded to the reality here. just . take care of yourself, kiddo.
Oliver did good at that dinner good boy. You get it
you said it cassie! well not exactly. i was not gonna say school was prison. y’all can still leave. unlike amy. but surveillance state for SURE. in the words of cap, “this isn’t freedom, this is fear.” or more accurately like “this isn’t safety, this is surveillance state.” like exCUSE me an app to track my every move while on campus ? babe no i’m not installing that send me to detention if you please but i simply refuse. that’s gotta be against my rights. are you KIDDING ? your paranoia is damaging these kids. i don’t care if murder bots crashed prom you can’t track my every move like that. brah
the truth seekers are annoying. shaddapppppp y’all gonna get kilt and you’re not even right you’ve got two facts in a bag of crazy
nice catch with the cactus, meisha. sorry i got your name wrong. cassie that was rude to immediately use the nickname immediately after she shot it down. why did no fcp people think to wipe off the blood smh. they truly are fail crappy poopy. mm that wasn’t my best work.
um what else
oh Henry was so angry when they took his woodchip away lol he was so cute
general note schaffer looks better. like when he was first introduced he was a big ball like. now he’s a big guy. he looked so dumb before it felt so rude lol
David brah you dumped her two days before hoco you can’t act all buddy buddy immediately like that r u for reals silly boy
braxton ? idk. the scar on his chin looks so dumb i’m sorry but i’m not. it looks dumb
i am intrigued by this julia. her plant area is super pretty and i would want to go there, provided i am not a prisoner like amy and there are no murderers on the premises
entirely unrelated to this issue is this thought i’ve had so like, Amy is technically 46 years old. I need a scene of her at a friend’s house or something, just yappin away with the parents about their shared pop culture experience while the friend watches, confused Or a friend who likes the oldies. Give her a friend like me, who was raised on 80s music, and knows so many songs, but has no idea who they’re by or what they’re called lol How do they indicate on ID cards and stuff “girl was born 46 years ago, but girl is minor” like
As Amy and Qiana calm down after their undercover mission and ponder what their finding could mean, Amy's friends back home return to school and see if there are any clues still there after the clean up. Oliver comes to realize he has feelings for Amy and asks Dr. Kim for advice on whether to tell her or not, and in the process realizes Amy cares for so many others...does anyone ask her how she's doing?
This volume bounces back and forth between Amy's friends, Amy, and Oliver much more than any of the recent volumes. Her friends are gathering more clues and Schafer still doesn't know if he believes Tammie about seeing Amy alive, but he does realize he loves her and she reciprocates his sentiment, so there's a lot of love going around in this volume. I really like that all the love relationships are built on solid friendships and they've fallen for each others' character; there's no shallow physicality to any of the relationships. It also demonstrates that disagreements don't mean you can't be friends. It is possible to work through them. I really liked that Oliver took the time to ask Amy how she was doing and the space to process what she was really feeling. She does take care of so many others, it is a good reminder to take care of the carers in your own life. While there's a lot of love going on, there's a subtle building of tension in the background as we move closer to more secrets being uncovered. I put this on the "coming soon" bulletin board today and I've already had several ask me if they can have it. Space Boy definitely has many devoted fans, and I'm glad I get the privilege of reading it even before it hits the shelves. #librarianperks 😁
Notes on content: Language: None Sexual content: None Violence: None Ethnic diversity: The characters in this future world are a blend of ethnicities. LGBTQ+ content: None specified Other: Emotional burdens people are carrying are talked about, PTSD from being kidnapped affects some characters, Oliver is in severe isolation with only contact over the internet, and Amy is sad she can't contact her loved ones and let them know she's ok
"Sometimes when you love someone -- someone who doesn't live in the same reality as you -- sometimes it's okay to step into their reality just for a bit. Just to be with them. You don't have to agree with them to be with them."
This series is so amazingly nuanced when it comes to relationships, loneliness, coming of age. It consistantly respects its characters and their emotional states I don't think I've seen any where before. I can't imagine what my life might have been as a kid to have this sort of role model for both healthy and unhealthy relationships. How to handle hard and troubling issues. How to seek out help, how to help those you care about. Empathy. This whole story is a beautiful model of empathy pieced together with a facintation plot and a mcguffin that has me desperate for more of the story, but at the same time wanting more time with each character because they're all so present. idk what I'm going to do when I catch up to the newest episode.
I'm really digging this series. The volumes keep getting stronger and stronger (IMO). I like how we're getting a nice focus on the relationships in this one, especially Oliver focusing on being "there" for Amy and putting her before his feelings for her. <3
P.s. Seeing Schafer struggle with believing Tammy, but loving her and wanting to be there for her too was a really nice focus of this volume.
P.p.s. I looked up this webcomic online & it's quite (a lot) farther ahead than the published volumes & I'm a little nervous 1. this series may be never-ending, 2. that it will take me a lifetime to read (/remember what's going on) if I only stick with the volumes. 😬
Oliver sees how Amy has always been there for him, helping him through everything while he hasn't been there for her enough. He tries to change that and it's just what Amy needs. Security has been beefed up at school after the homecoming dance incident. Amy's friends are still trying to figure out what really happened that night and where Amy might be now. A group is formed to find answers, the Truth Seekers question what they've been told about the incident because eye witnesses have a different story. But can their leader be trusted? Qaina and Amy follow a clue to Lesnik's killer, a name Sophi that they found.
Reached the end of the published omnibus volumes, not sure if my library will buy the single volumes and too impatient to wait I turned to webtoons. And this might have been the best volume yet! I was worried digital would hurt the story but it’s the opposite, the creator does a little doodle and message at the end of each episode that make it feel special. And since it’s drawn with the long, scrolling format in mind that feels very natural. Anyway the story is still a slow burn (obvs) but I like that. Watching the characters grow is very rewarding.
Transitional Space Boy: not much action outside of emotional action. This is one of those volumes that sets pieces in the places they'll be needed in later in the story.
I'll say it again: Oliver annoys me, but I'm committed to Amy's story and seeing where it leads.
Is there an endgame for Space Boy? Where does this story go, and how long does it take to get there?
I don't know, felt just a little heavy on the "here's the healthy way to process this emotionally difficult thing", happening multiple times-- I generally agreed with what was presented, at least, so I'm not exactly annoyed, but it still just felt noticeably more present in this volume for whatever reason.
Cassie, Tammie, and Schafer continue to investigate Amy's "death"/disappearance. Oliver seeks relationship advice from Dr. Kim and wonders if he should tell Amy about his feelings for her. Amy and Qiana continue their investigation. #Edelweiss+
I’m keeping these reviews brief as I work through these volumes to catch up, but one thing that stood out to me in this particular volume was the inclusion of several solid, real-life lessons that were genuinely helpful. The author does a great job incorporating these!
