Seventeen-year-old Shawn Turner no longer belongs to the world of the living. Armed without a heartbeat, he starts his afterlife as a reaper. After being given the name of a person destined to die in the next seven days, he must go out and collect their soul.
As Shawn separates himself from the living and moves below ground, he attends Wayward Academy which teaches him the training and traditions all first-year reapers need to know to perform their duty.
The only thing is, Shawn isn't sure he can handle this new responsibility. Dying at seventeen, Shawn never got to make the impact he wanted. So, when an opportunity arises, he has a choice to make. Does Shawn stay in his lane as a reaper, or go out of his way to make a difference?
Growing up I always wanted to be a writer. I lived in my own head creating characters and worlds that I NEEDED to explore. Now I've finally put the pen to paper to let others explore them with me.
Originally from the suburbs of Chicago, I now live just outside of Detroit. When I'm not planning out the next twist in my series, you can usually find me out for a run or playing basketball.
As I set my sights on one crazy adventure after another, I'm thankful to have been raised alongside three amazing sisters by parents who have supported me in every aspect.
Pun Enthusiast. Dog Person. Professional Procrastinator
The next great fantasy series!! The author really builds the background, setting and characters throughout the first half the book with vivid descriptions that really suck you into the world. Then you’re taken on a winding and thrilling ride and adventure with the characters through the last half. I never knew what was going to happen next and it kept me hooked from start to finish. I cannot wait for book 2!!!
I've wanted to read this novel for a while now, and I was finally able to get around to it. Boy, am I glad that I did!
It stinks that now I'll have to wait until the second book is complete. The author filled this story with plenty of surprises, jokes, and end-of-chapter cliffhangers. It was expertly written; and there is a blend of multiple genres in this novel, such as paranormal, horror, humor, and fantasy. After finishing this lengthy book, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment.
This chronicle would have benefited from keener editing.
The graphic design artist did a fantastic job on the book cover.
This novel is a must-read for YA enthusiasts as well as book lovers who enjoy reading a good book. It is not well-suited for children, or bibliophiles who prefer a clean read.
Paranormal fantasy fans take note—author Billy Kramer makes an impressive entrance into the world of YA fantasy with his explosive debut novel, “The First Assignment.”
Shawn Turner gets the surprise of his life when he wakes up in a 5×5 box wondering why in the world anyone would want to kidnap him, let alone a strange man in an 1800s styled tuxedo driving a horse-drawn carriage. But this isn’t an ordinary world—Shawn Turner is dead. Destined to study at Wayward Academy for the next phase of his existence—as a reaper—Shawn now lives among a group of other first-year reapers training to collect the souls of the newly deceased. Shawn and his friends Maple, Q, and Jay learn all the time-honored traditions of Wayward Academy, and while the position of a reaper and all they stand for is highly admirable, there are some questionable practices, leaving Shawn with doubts he’s cut out for the role. He soon discovers his first assignment could make or break his future in the afterlife.
Packed with action and adventure, this chilling, entertaining story brings a hearty dose of intensity to the overall reading experience. The author is proficient in his craft, delivering a well-written narrative with remarkable and diverse characters, and a pulsating, ever-twisting plot. It’s a distinctive and fresh addition to the YA fantasy world.
The characters won me over from the start. Shawn, as the story’s protagonist, exhibits the genuine traits of a young male trying to find his way in a world he can’t quite come to terms with, and shows remarkable growth and belief in himself as the story progresses. I think he even surprises himself at times! No cookie-cutter characters here—Shawn’s group of friends are clearly unique, each possessing distinguishable mannerisms and peculiarities that draw you in as a reader in and makes you want to root for them. They are each battling their own demons, only partially revealed as the story unfolds, and that is perhaps my only wish for more out of the story. I would love to have learned more about the backstories of these teens.
Wayward Academy sounds like a magnificent, if not intimidating, place to spend time in the afterlife. I love how descriptive and inventive the author is with his settings; the ambiance drawing the reader directly into the story. A warning for sensitive readers: there are some intense, graphic scenes that may not be suitable for younger teens. That said, I enjoyed the visual depths Kramer brings to the story with his vivid, illustrative portrayals, particularly of the action scenes and the battle wounds sustained by the young reapers. You’ll hold your breath, all the while wanting more.
Billy Kramer should find himself well at home in the YA fantasy world. It would not surprise me at all to see this up-and-coming author make quite a name for himself, and I look forward to seeing how he continues to develop his talent. And—with the dramatic ending of “The First Assignment,” I can only hope a sequel is forthcoming. This is a must-read for all YA fantasy enthusiasts.
When Shawn awakens from a mysterious death as a reaper, can he accept his new role as required? Or will he die again to save a mortal soul?
**I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the author and Reedsy Discovery. Receiving a copy for free did not in any away affect my review. This is an honest, spoiler-free review, and any opinions expressed within are solely my own.**
Shawn doesn't know how he died, but he knows he can die again. That is, unless he accepts the role of 'Reaper', and takes others' souls himself.
Swept up into an undead academy of twisted secrets, ancient traditions, and conflicting morals, Shawn only wants to survive his second (and final) life. The rules for his contract are simple. Do the job. Don't interact with living humans. Don't be late. Easy, right?
Until a living girl who shouldn't be able to see him suddenly can exactly that--and not just Shawn, she can see ALL the reapers. Facing someone who sees and understands their plight, Shawn must decide whether to follow his duty, or follow his gut.
The First Assignment swept me away from the very beginning. There's something magical about Kramer's writing style that made me feel like I was there, in the story with the characters. Through gory, gut-wrenching moments, to the small joys of living, reading this book puts what makes life worth living into the spotlight in a way that only darkness can allow to shine.
There is so much amazing world-building, rules, creative twists on classic undead creatures and creatures of the night (like Gargoyles) that I was swept away, and hints at glorious future battles and turmoil to come.
I will admit that I was very torn about whether to give this a 4-star or 5-star review, because there are some rough editing patches here and there and a couple world-building questions that would have been nice to see played out more. However, because those were small, side-plot questions and infrequent editing misses, the immersive world, gripping characters, and page-turning plot definitely earn it a 5-star in the end.
The First Assignment has definitely set the bar high for this series, and I will be eagerly awaiting what happens in volume two.
Though these characters are written in an academy setting similar to YA pieces, parents should be aware that some subject matter (mentioned at the end of this review in the trigger warnings) may be a bit morbid and graphic for the younger end of YA (12-year-olds). A parental review could help with that, though.
**Trigger Warnings: Death of a loved one, death/murder/attempted murder (including implied death/murder of minor children under age 18), suicide, torture, kidnapping, psychological torture/manipulation, blood/gore**
What happens after death? This is one of the greatest questions. While there are numerous theories and visions of the afterlife, there seems to be no absolute universal certainty of what lies beyond. Billy Kramer joins the ranks of wonderers by offering a cohesive and immersive narrative of the afterlife and life in The First Assignment.
This young adult fantasy novel opens the gates to a gripping tale of self-discovery, becoming, and the interconnectivity between people. The tale, characters, and events evoke a strange familiarity in the reader. Some elements seem like a distant memory lost in the fog of time or a dream that dissipates at first light.
The First Assignment centers on life after death following the experiences of seventeen-year-old Shawn Turner. After waking up under strange circumstances, Shawn finds himself transported to a brave old world. Alone among strangers, his survival instincts kick in while he tries to understand his new reality.
Shawn is just one of many recently deceased who were chosen to join Wayward Academy. An academy of the dead in service of the living. This complex institution is a learning center, work center, and living space for those enrolled. While reapers seem to take the center stage, this is merely one of the groups that animate the space.
Bombarded with new experiences and concepts, pulled down by the weight of the unknown, Shawn soon finds comfort in the familiarity of new friendships. He soon builds a connection with a few other first-year students at the WA. Through shared experiences, whispered secrets, and knowing glances, Shawn begins to gain strength.
After being subjected to a series of intellectually, emotionally, and physically challenging tests, the new students are assigned to their respective jobs. Then, Shawn receives his first assignment. Waiting for someone to die offers Shawn ample space for introspection. Bound by strict regulations and under supervision, he sees a glimmer of hope to break through the chains and make a difference. However, taking this path would mean silencing his survival instinct.
Billy Kramer creates a magical universe caught in a mystical realm somewhere between life and darkness. The First Assignment builds the foundation of a new worldview that invites further expansion. While Book 1 may be finished, Book 2 lingers on the horizon.
The First Assignment by Billy Kramer is a fantastic addition to the young adult fantasy genre. The plot contains a new and exciting take on the paranormal genre and centers around Shawn Turner, who wakes up in a wooden cell without understanding how his whole life has changed. Soon, he learns that through unexpected circumstances, he is part of an underground "Wayward Academy." Through a series of dramatic and sometimes dangerous adventures, Shawn discovers secrets surrounding the school and explores more throughout his training, with surprising findings.
I found the author's writing style exciting, and it captures the essence of what it means to be a young adult facing challenges. The plot is clearly developed and will absorb readers of all ages, and Kramer creates many different storylines between the protagonists while focusing on Shawn's academy experience. It's an exciting story that follows Shawn's escapades, including fast-paced action, betrayal, thrill, and unexpected twists.
The First Assignment by Billy Kramer is a solid 5-star read and a great piece of literature, whether you're a fan of young adult fiction or new to the genre. I promise you will not be disappointed by the adventures of the "Wayward Academy," Shawn, and the other characters in the thrilling universe surrounding them. The author expertly crafted a fantastic world with riveting lore and amazingly eccentric characters that will pull you in for an excellent read. It's a book I highly recommend.
Shawn Turner wakes up in a coffin-like box, without a heartbeat, only to discover he recently died and has been selected to become a reaper. To train, he must attend the Wayward Academy, a school for those who escort souls to their final resting place. Things don’t go as planned, however, when the first soul Shawn is assigned to collect belongs to a girl who can somehow see him and the other reapers. Kramer’s debut novel is a fantastical adventure that is immersive, dark, and sometimes gory, but most importantly, it’s a story about a boy who must decide whether to blindly follow the strict rules of his new existence or follow his heart. With squirm-worthy claustrophobic moments, a highly memorable opening chapter, and a vivid cast of characters, The First Assignment is an engaging and entertaining romp through the afterlife.
Imagine waking up in a horse-drawn carriage with no memory of the last few days, only to find out you're dead.... Yes, you read that correctly.
Enter a whole new world with Billy Kramer's, "The First Assignment". This young adult paranormal fantasy will creep up to be one of your new favorite books. Kramer's descriptive writing and use of humorous one liners throughout his book makes it relatable and easy to visualize yourself along for the ride. Just when you think you've figured out the story line, another twist will surprise. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
I have never read a book like this before, but I can confidently say that my mind is now open to this whole other world of literature. Billy Kramer does a great job of setting the scene and allowing his readers to envision this alternate world of the dead. You quickly become attached to the characters and their stories and you find yourself learning with them throughout the book. This book is perfect for anyone looking for something new and gripping. From fear to bravery, from failure to triumph, from love to loss, and all else in between, this book will not disappoint!
I loved this book from start to finish and cannot wait for book 2. Each character is unique and so thought out, it’s so easy to be invested in them. The writing is very well done!
