Unaging: The Four Factors that Impact How You Age

Rate this book
Aging is a subject of concern to everyone, but is widely misunderstood. If we view it as inevitable, we miss the fact that not everyone is able to grow to an old age. Realization of this reality helps us to understand that aging presents a wonderful opportunity - an opportunity to make choices about how we live which can enhance the aging process and offer a chance to live to our potential. This book clearly presents the four, multiple reserve, factors (cognitive, physical, psychological and social) which impact our ability to have healthy responses to the stresses of aging. By giving the biological basis for the advice given, you will learn the steps to take in your activities, diet and mental outlook to grasp the opportunity that aging offers. Everyone must know that what we do makes a difference.

There have been a number of books published in the past few years about how to age better and live not just longer but healthier for longer. This is a good one. I have read a half dozen or so and they tend to give good advice but it is typically the same type of advice. Eat better — more vegetables, whole grains and seafood, less red meat, sugar, processed foods and alcohol. Exercise. Use your brain. Don’t smoke. Watch things that are linked to Alzheimer’s like pollution, smoking, head injuries, inactivity, toxins and being overweight. Find meaning. And so on. It’s a well written book with lots of good advice. It is similar to others on the topic but it’s a good choice.

I read a digital ARC of this book via netgalley.

“We must not presume aging to be inevitable and accept decline without consideration of how the manifestations of aging can be modified through our personal actions. Every moment we are alive is an occasion to experience the world and ourselves. Every moment is an occasion we should not allow to go by without notice”.

A must read for everyone who care about themselves and the state of physical and mental health they arrive to the old age with.

One of the best books I’ve read all year! Dr. Friedland writes for the masses with a scientific bent in digestible prose with a sense of humor. The book offers case studies, tips and explanations galore. I will change a few things in my life after reading this book. Disclaimer: Dr. Friedland is married to my husband’s aunt.
