What really makes this book rich is the author lets us into her own life experiences of suffering, not in a self-centering way, but in a way that gives weight to her claims of God’s care for her, and everyone, in their suffering. In her experience, she knows the deep pain of deep suffering, and she’s still found God in it all, dark, lonely places included. It was saturated is scripture, not pedantic lecturing scripture or fluff, but rich, encouraging, and grounding scripture. It doesn’t feel like rote Christianese answers but authentic gentle encouragement: “You are not alone. Suffering is a fact of life. Sooner or later, each of us will experience it in one way or another... Yet, no matter the suffering, it matters—to you, to me, and most importantly, to God.”

Karis Meier has done a beautiful job in her book, “Suffering Redeemed”, of telling her personal story of physical suffering mixed with her thoughts and studies of the character of God, giving readers a sense of purpose and hope for the future. She covers many topics including our identity in Christ; the pursuit of intimacy with God; the tension between now and heaven; the fight for joy; the battle for the mind and imagination; perseverance; and the importance of worship and thanksgiving, all within the context of suffering and pain.
I love how she includes scripture liberally throughout her writing, always drawing the reader back to the living Word. Some of my favorite passages from Karis’ book include the following: “So God keeps us, and we must also keep ourselves in his love. We have a part in the keeping. We do not merit or work for his love or salvation, but it doesn’t mean we live on cruise control, coasting until heaven”. (35) “But God patiently waits for us to turn to him in our need. When we open ourselves to God in our pain, we allow him to provide comfort in the deepest places of our souls.” (95)
Whether you are thinking of reading this book because you too are suffering from chronic pain, struggling with relationships, suffering from loss, or know someone who is suffering, there is plenty of encouragement in this book. This is not a book for those who want a quick fix, or just a way out of their pain and suffering. It is a guide for how to live (and not just survive) through the pain and suffering, learning to surrender to God and his purposes despite circumstances that are not ideal.

Suffering has the ability to draw us toward God or turn us away from God. It comes down to surrender and trusting God and believing that He has a plan and this is part of His will and opening ourselves up to Him.
Karis writes that she did not believe God’s love because He was allowing bad things to continue happening and not healing her. How many of us have felt that way in difficult circumstances? Why doesn’t God just fix my life and my problems? Does He even care? If He is able and powerful enough to do something about it, why doesn’t he?
Karis beautifully weaves the Gospel in and through her tale of suffering. She shows us how to fight our fears and doubts with God’s Truth and how to seek out His love even in the midst of suffering.
It takes time with God to truly experience His love, not just know the facts in our head.
Like Joni Eareckson Tada, Karis also finds deep comfort in singing the hymns to teach her soul to worship God and to know His love for her. Music is so powerful to break through to our heart when mere words cannot. “my focus shifts from my overwhelming pain to his all-sufficient love.”
She talks about Paul going through hardships and trials…”And yet, instead of becoming self-absorbed, he became Christ-focused.”
Karis combines beautifully storytelling what God has shown her through her difficulties of this life with Biblical truth in a way that makes it relevant and compelling. We can learn much from reading her story.
Most importantly, this book for me has motivated me to draw closer to God in my health, while things are good. To seek His face, to be grateful for the things He's blessed me with. Reading Karis' personal account of struggling through difficulty, but getting closer to God through it all made me jealous for that kind of relationship with God myself again. Let's all run after God with our whole heart no matter what season we are in.
Some quotes:
“that I was not being abandoned by God but to God.”
“The Lord began to reveal how much I depended on this life to bring satisfaction instead of setting my hope on eternity.”
This is probably my favorite paragraph of the whole book: ““Never think that God’s delays are God’s denials” (George-Louis LeClerc). We may need to pray for many years before we see the answer. There’s a reason God urges us to be persistent in prayer. Sometimes, the answer is no, but sometimes, he wants us to wait. He often works more in the waiting than in the answering.”
“Most of the Bible stories we love are made out of people with problems. Miracles are born out of problems. We rejoice at the glorious outcome, but we often forget to read between the lines and recognize that there were days, months, and even years of struggle endured in these stories. There was a lot of middle before the end.”
“No one likes to be in over their head, but if it’s God’s doing, I can’t wait until I’m there. A place where my heart feels at rest and sees the beauty of God’s sovereign plan above my safety and comfort.”
“…through dependance comes intimacy.”
“To get our minds off ourselves while suffering is a miracle. To live in joy, peace, and love is only possible by the Holy Spirit.”

Through the author's journey and testimony of her experiences with illness, she opens the readers' hearts and minds to the importance of having steadfast faith and trust in the acceptance and divine deliverance of a desired healing. She shares her struggles, doubts, and fears, which turn into acceptance, belief, and connection to a divine force that guides, heals, protects, and is a constant companion along the crossroads in her life. Her experiences and lessons teach us what grace, gratitude, and divine awareness look like. I love how the author incorporates scriptures that resonate and support her points and help the reader grow their understanding and connection to divine truths. This is a story of resilience and deep understanding that God is with her throughout her struggles and guiding her through it all. If you are personally dealing with or know someone who is dealing with pain and challenges, reading this book helps you to understand that you are not alone. It's a beautiful story of a faith-filled life, and it's a great resource that teaches the reader how to move through the trials of life with faith, hope, and peace that surpasses all understanding.

I read most of this book in one sitting. It drew me in and kept me seeking more as Karis told the story of her own life, but more importantly as she paints a picture of God through our suffering. As a member of the human race, we all suffer. How we face this suffering, whether we "tough it out", walk away from God, decide to take on a "victim mentality", get angry with God, grow depressed, or submit daily to Christ and God's sovereignty is something that is discussed in depth.
I feel like this book is an excellent companion for someone going through suffering, especially of the kind that doesn't seem to let up despite our prayers and pleas.
It would be a great gift for someone going through a medical problem or loss. But it is also for those who have not had such a great suffering, as we all will face suffering in some form in our lives, and it would build in us the ability to put our strength and confidence in the Lord as we endure whatever pain comes. I know it has encouraged me this day.
Praying God will use the book in many lives,

This was truly an encouraging read.
I loved Karis’ attention to scripture and her inviting and compassionate approach. Her personal story of suffering is woven throughout, but subtly. What gleams off the page is the gospel applied to the very diverse, yet universal experience of suffering. It feels conversational, with her observations and reflections interspersed with thoughtful questions.
In the book, she talks about wishing she had a clear resolution or miracle to share, but I think her persistent faith is far more encouraging to those who share with her in the reality of living with suffering that may or may not end before eternity. I am reminded of 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 (ESV):
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.”
I wanted to end this review with one of my favorite quotes from the book. “Whatever small or great suffering we go through, the outcome could produce a sweeter and stronger bond with Jesus, but we must position ourselves near him. We must trust that he is walking with us, however dark or deep the valley may be.” (p 41)

Karis's book is one I was blessed to read, had a hard time putting down, and look forward to perusing again.
I underlined so many key passages, verses, quotes, Etc. that I struggled to choose a few favorites to share!
The book is easy to read, although the content is such that I wanted to savor and not miss anything.
I so appreciate her candor and the way she has clung to God through her struggles and encourages us, through this book, to do the same. She doesn't just glibly tell you it's easy!
I appreciate Karis's backing up what she says with Scripture, and I found the book causing me to go digging further myself. I also appreciated her quotes from John Piper and Johnny Erickson Tada on suffering - very applicable!
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is struggling through the hard, or even a caregiver or relative of someone suffering; it will give you a better perspective of how to help or minister to them through their trials.

Beyond inspiring!
The depth of Karis Meier's message in Suffering Redeemed is almost beyond description. She very successfully weaves a lifetime of raw, indescribable pain into a tapestry of amazing truths glorifying our amazing, awesome God. Her deeply inspiring words are so clearly born out of great suffering, but consistently lead one to hope and understanding of the immeasurable love of God that daily restores His beloved children in the midst of any and all suffering. She supports her personal victories and losses with perfectly chosen scriptures. I am as inspired by her continuing story as by Corrie Ten Boom's The Hiding Place. This book will stay with me for years to come. An amazing read for ANYONE suffering in any way and for those caring for a loved one in pain. Thank you, Karis, for you courage and candor!

Karis Meier’s new book, Suffering Redeemed, is a moving and very personal story of dealing with chronic pain and suffering. As she shares her journey of coping with numerous symptoms, diagnoses and disappointments, Karis also talks about her deep faith in a God who is near and good.
“It is better to know God than to know His answers”, she writes. No matter how she feels, Karis knows that God loves her perfectly, that He knows all that she is going through and that He is moved by her suffering.
Over and over again, Karis invites the reader to draw near to God, to stay close to His promises and soak in His Word. “Live hopefully”, she challenges the reader. Her combination of raw honesty and passionate faith are inspiring, comforting and encouraging. I loved this book and will be recommending it to many.

Suffering Redeemed was a fascinating read that allowed me to examine my own suffering and hardships through a new lens. Although my suffering does not mirror Karis', the sharing of her testimony, her vulnerability, and her honesty, as well as God's redeeming love, is a paramount lesson learned in my own life! No matter your life situation or where you are in your journey (Christian or not!), Suffering Redeemed is a must-read. I truly couldn't put it down! Karis Meier has an easy-to-read writing style with content that speaks directly to your heart. This is a story I will reread, and I have already sent a copy to my family!

There are no easy answers to suffering. The way Karis has struggled through the process of understanding her own suffering in the light of God‘s goodness is very impactful and important for Christians to hear. This is a book full of scripture to lift up as well as the deep and intimate struggles of someone who has suffered for so long. Everyone will go through some level of suffering in their life which makes it so important to develop a firm foundation of trust and reliance on the Lord, understanding of how scripture talks about suffering, and healthy ways to process it. This book will be helpful for anyone.

Suffering Redeemed provides help and hope
Karis Meier suffers throughout the book with an unknown disease that has sapped her health and complicates even the simplest tasks. Throughout the book she freely shares her suffering and lessons learned. She earns the right to then share several chapters on dealing with and living with suffering. She finds triumph in her faith. After years of suffering they diagnosed Lyme disease which has treatment but no cure. Her faith and witness will enable others who battle their own pain. I highly recommend this book as an aid to dealing with your pain.

This book showed me that even when suffering feels pointless, there can still be hope. It helped me see that being strong doesn’t mean pretending to be okay—it means finding a way to keep going, even when life is hard.
By the time I finished I did feel lighter. I still have tough days, but now I see my pain differently. Suffering Redeemed didn’t give me all the answers, but it helped me ask better questions. If you’re struggling and feel like no one understands, this book is worth reading. It won’t take your pain away, but it will help you find hope in the middle of it.

Thought provoking
This is a deeply personal book, and the author doesn't shut away from using her own suffering to help you find the faith and courage to fight your own battles. Her struggle with self image is one I think everyone can probably relate to, if they're being honest. I especially loved this quote from her book: "Suffering reveals the truth that life is not about us or our comfort but about God." As the lines under it emphasized, I want the only one that resonated with.

Blessed By Reading
This book has given me a spiritual perspective on suffering well. Meier weaves an incredible amount of Scripture into a memoir of sorts. It is altogether humbling, sad, courageous, and inspiring to read! I would recommend this book to anyone (and their caregivers) experiencing, recovering from, or surviving health issues. It will be a good resource for me as I navigate my own health journey.

As the author takes her readers through her own personal experience with chronic illness and details the victories, pain, sorrows and plot twists along the way, she provides so much encouragement and solid teaching on how to view suffering from the Christian perspective. I found this book to be a source of hope and encouragement and would highly recommend it, especially to those in the midst of their own storm.

God is so good!
This book really hit home for me. As someone whose life runs a close parallel to this author’s, I could feel all of her emotions. She showed me that God IS with you, even when you’re suffering. If you ever wondered the why behind pain and suffering or whether there is a God, this is a must read.

As I read I felt like I had a big sister holding my hand explaining the wisdom she gained through her journey with God. The voice was steady, comforting, strong, and wise. This story is honest and vulnerable. Meier does not pretend suffering is easy, yet she writes with faith and wisdom. I have been deeply touched by this story. I pray Meier's words bring hope and wisdom to all who read.

Beautiful disaster
OK, so I appreciate what this author was trying to do. And sharing her vulnerable story as well as allowing the reader to find hope in overcoming obstacles, pain, suffering, and enduring the rest of it with a smile.
It’s definitely a lot to take in. But it’s worth it.

Good read for the spiritually and religiously inclined
This book mainly discusses a connection with spirituality and God. I know of numerous cases where that has resulted in peace or acceptance. It could work for most.
