Penn I didn’t go looking for her, but I wanted her from the moment we met. To know her. To have her. Even just for a night—until I found out how old she was. That should have been it. The end. She was too young, and far too good for me. She had everything, and I had nothing to offer. Still, all I wanted was her. Before I realized what was happening, I was in way too deep. One summer was all we could have. A stolen season that would glimmer in my memory like a fragment of starlight stolen and tucked away. A love that would color every song I ever wrote from then on. Love didn’t matter, though. It wasn’t enough. Not for a girl like Raegan. The only way to give her what she deserved was to break her heart. And mine.
Raegan All I wanted was a summer fling. It was the last summer I’d spend on Fire Island before moving across the country for college. I wasn’t looking for anything serious—I wasn’t looking for love. But then I met Penn. He wasn’t like anyone I’d ever known, and he wasn’t the playboy he pretended to be. He was sweet and caring, drop-dead gorgeous, and it didn’t hurt that he was a musician. He made me feel like I was all that mattered to him. He became my entire world in a matter of weeks. I’d been coming to the seaside community on Fire Island from NYC for years in the summers. But this summer, everything felt different. Everything was different. Because of him. And this summer, I didn’t want to leave. I gave him my heart...my body...my soul… I was willing to give him my future too. But it wasn’t enough.
Saltaire is book one of the Fire Island Series. Penn and Raegan’s story will be concluded in book two.
*ARC received from author in exchange for my honest review. *
The reading world better watch out for Hazel Jacks. If this is a debut novel, I can't imagine the kinds of stories she will be creating in a couple of years' time. Everything about this book had me captivated. From the descriptions of Fire Island to the way that Raegan could hardly breathe around Penn and the little details that can make or break a book. It was descriptive without being overly so and when their hearts were breaking mine was too. It wasn't an instant kind of love either, I felt like I was watching Penn and Raegan fall in love as it was happening. Before I knew it, I was in love with them both.
Raegan was only looking to enjoy the summer in the place that she loved most in the world, Fire Island. Spend some time with her best friend maybe have a fling before heading off to college but Raegan could have never anticipated Penn. He was unlike anyone she had ever met and before she knew it, she had given her heart to the man who made her feel like she was his entire world. Except, summer is ending and leaving behind Penn means giving up the one thing she wants to take for herself. Him.
A moment, that was all Penn could give Raegan. In the grand scheme of things that was all this summer could be for them. He was a local and Fire Island was his home, but she was destined for something much greater than this island. Something much greater than him. He would cherish their time together because he knew the moment, he saw her he would take what he could get from her.
Saltaire thrusts you into the story of Raegan and Penn and the summer that they fell in love. There is so much love flowing through these pages and Hazel Jacks did such an incredible job of keeping the youth of these two characters without making them seem desperate or ignorant. Young love is not any less powerful than the love that two people can share when they are older. It is just different.
This is just the first part of Raegan and Penn's story, and I can't wait to see what Hazel in store for the second book in this duet.
This is one of the best debuts I’ve ever read, without a doubt. We follow Raegan, who is a few weeks from turning 18, embarking on a summer of ‘experience’ before she heads to college. She has spent time on Fire Island before, but her path has never crossed with Penn Wells before. Penn Wells is a resident of Fire Island and is a certified playboy, he also happens to be a perfect opportunity for Raegan to have some fun before college begins. (this is an age gap romance Raegan is 17 turning 18 and Penn is 23)
There’s no denying they’re soulmates. Starting off slow but burning fast and bright, their connection feels as if it is written in the stars. However they’re both soon questioning what they want for themselves and for each other, things are tangled and overwhelming and there’s no question that this is no longer an uncomplicated, simple summer romance.
The ending had me literally throwing the book, I HAVE to pick up the next one ASAP. I loved the characters here especially Lily, she was the typical fun, carefree best friend/side character but she was also so so much more. I loved her connection with Rae and the way you can tell they have unconditional love for each other, the way Lily is always there in her own way and how she is always in Raes corner without hesitation.
I also really loved the development you see from the main characters, Rae and Penn, throughout the book. Rae matures so much, you can really tell this summer has changed her for the better- she is more assured, more confident and finally ready to admit to herself (and others) what she actually wants from her life, even if that means casting off lifelong expectations. Penn starts out as the traditional summer getaway playboy, always there for the vacation fling but nothing more- no strings, no attachment. When Penn meets Rae and their connection is undeniable, he begins to question his past ways, realising there’s more he wants, that he no longer wants to be the playboy for the non-natives visiting the island over the summer.
There is so much angst between these characters as they go back and forth. Wanting each other but having to face the unknown of what that means for the rest of their lives.
I loved this book so much, it is so realistic and a phenomenal debut. I cannot wait to pick up the second book and see what Hazel Jacks has planned for Rae and Penn.
Wow! This is a debut novel!? I need more from Hazel Jacks! I absolutely adored this story and these characters and couldn’t put it down! This is the beginning of Raegan and Penn’s story…to be continued. I loved Raegan and her tendency to do as she pleases and not give into peer pressure. It so refreshing and reminds me of myself when I was that age. She doesn’t drink a lot and she wears her band shirts with pride. And Penn notices that about her instantly and sees a kindred soul in her. Penn is a playboy supposedly but Raegan unleashes something else in him that he doesn’t truly understand until it may be too late. I love when books use music to relay emotions and this book does just that perfectly! This story was so well written and just sucked me in! I really felt like I could smell the lotions, the salty air, I felt like these were my friends! What a wonderful story about young love with a heartbreaking ending! But never fear! There is more to Penn and Raegan’s story in the second book and I’m here for it!
This is the first in a new series and this is Penn and Raegan’s story. Penn is sweet, caring, sexy, and a musician, wo has a playboy reputation. Raegan wants to have a summer of having fun with her best friends, before she leaves to attend college. From the moment that Penn and Raegan meet, there is an instant connection between them. Raegan is ready to give up everything to stay with Penn, until he breaks both their hearts. This is a beautifully written story, which is an emotional roller coaster and pulls at the heartstrings throughout, with intrigue, heartbreak, palpable chemistry, and love, which leads to a compelling page turner. I cannot wait to read the next book. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
I thoroughly enjoyed this debut book by Hazel Jacks. Raegan and Penn’s story is so much more than a summertime fling. Their young love stirs up raw emotions and it was entertaining watching them navigate the age gap challenge. I loved the dynamic cast of characters and look forward to getting to know them better.
What a debut novel by Hazel! Raegan is heading to fire island for the summer before she starts college as a freshman. Her bestfriend Lily and her are determined to have an amazing summer, find a summer fling, then be on their way to college. Well that all changes once Penn comes into the picture the day they get on the ferry to get to the island. Penn try’s to keep his distance because Raegan is not yet 18, but in the end they can’t keep their eyes off each other and things escalate between them.
This is slow burn, but the wait is worth it. The book does end on a bit of a happy ending but also cliff hanger situation, but I knew that going in so I was prepared. I can’t wait for the next book and to see what’s next for Rae and penn!
Wow what a debut novel!! I honestly felt like I was Raegan and could feel all her highs and lows. There were parts of the book that physical broke heart and I could stop crying.
Raegan is a girl who just finished high school and ever summer goes to fire island to spend the summer with her best friend Lily at her uncle Rhett’s house. She is determined to have summer fling and go off to college and go on with her life.
Penn is your typical playboy never had a relationship and always just has flings. His family owns the Ferris on Fire Island. He worked his way up and is now a captain and will one day take over for his father.
Penn meets Raegan when he is the captain of the ferry taking her to Fire Island. They both can’t keep their eyes off each other. They finally get to talking and have a lot in common. Though Penn feels he doesn’t deserve her because they come from different life’s.
There is a lot of build to when they finally get together but the wait was worth it.. though the book does end in a cliffhanger but I did know that going into it. So I was a little more prepared.
I have a feeling this book is going to stick with me for awhile I just can’t get over it like I have other books.
I seriously can’t not wait until the next book comes out. Oh side note I think her best friend Lily is hilarious!!
This book tells the story about a first love, in 2004. Penn, 23 years old, helps his father at Islander Ferry, being a captain of the ferry and helping with the watertaxis. Raegan, 17 years old, 18 next month, always spends her summers on Fire Island at her uncle’s place, together with her bestie, Lily. This year is a bit more special, after this summer they will be attending Berkely College. First, Raegan can’t believe Penn would actually be into her, normally Lily gets the attention from boys. But because she’s not 18 yet, he doesn’t want to go to far. Something that starts as a summerfling, soon turns into something so much more.
This book has left me emotionally wrecked. I can get emotional reading a book, but this one made me cry. Not going to spoil why, you just have to read it. The book ends with a cliffhanger, so I can’t wait for book 2 that’s releasing in February 2023. It got me hooked from the beginning, kept reading till late at night. It’s such an easy read, and you can really relate to these characters. Grab your copy today…
This is Book 1 in the Fire Island Series and my first read by this author, and I must say that I quite enjoyed the storyline and characters. It is the start of the age gap romance between Penn and Raegan. These likeable characters and the unique plot make for an interesting read. What starts out as a summer fling promises to turn into something more. It is a sweet story of first love filled with drama, sweetness, frustrating moments, unexpected twists, and passion, plus appealing secondary characters to keep the reader interested. The main characters share an undeniable chemistry and connection. An engaging page turner ending in a cliffhanger.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Grey's Promotions and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
I enjoyed this book so much! The ease between Penn and Reagan was wonderful and I loved how naturally themselves they were around each other. Character growth was great, and the ending, although not technically a cliffhanger, left me desperate for the next book. *I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is a new author to me and to everyone by the looks of it and in my opinion it sure was a good one. It will hook you for sure. This is Raegan and Penn’s story. It’s a first love well first every tres lot for Raegan. Which is so much more emotional at that age. It was a sweet emotional book that I truly loved and would love to read more by this author.
As a romance reader, I approach every romance book with a generalized expectation. Boy falls for girl, girl falls for boy, they have some internal conflict and they squash it out before living happily ever after.
Saltaire was so much more than that.
First off, let's start with Fire FREAKIN' Island. I can practically FEEL the saltwater in my hair! The small hometown island vibes were so perfectly done, I felt like I was riding along with Penn and Raegan on every ferry ride.
Oh, and those two.... Penn and Raegan. Raegan and Penn. Their love felt so pure and real and true. And what I loved the most was how real and true they were with EACH OTHER! Let's face it, when we're teens, we're irrational, emotional, and full of bad decisions. But both Raegan and Penn (yes, Penn. Cause what the hell do we know in our twenties?) were so mature. They didn't express their love and emotions through games or insinuation, they said what they felt and my goodness did that feel good as a reader. And it made their love all the more sweet.
I cannot wait for Return to Saltaire because Raegan and Penn deserve the happily ever after I know they're destined for.
My heart has been shattered, and there’s a piece of it wedged in a beach somewhere on Fire Island.
This is INCREDIBLE. The 2004 vibes with the pop punk playlist, no shitty phones, riding bikes everywhere, spending the day at the beach, taking water taxis, underage drinking, staying out late, finding another family in friends…I genuinely am speechless.
The age gap did not bother me whatsoever and I found that Rae’s character development was second to none. She really and truly blossomed throughout the book. As did Penn. I love the reformed playboy trope. These two are absolutely soulmates and the end of the book fucking crushed me.
The friendship group was everything to me and I will literally die if I don’t get a book with Lily as a protagonist. I want to be friends with Lily and Rae. They are so much fun, so realistic. I love how the issue I thought would come between them didn’t. Lily is such a supportive friend.
I want to live in this universe. Its so comforting to me and I could see everything playing out in my head like a movie. I cannot believe this is a debut. I want to scream I am so overwhelmed.
Title: Saltaire Author: Hazel Jacks Hero/Heroine: Penn & Raegan Tropes: Opposites Attract, Summer Romance, Age Gap,
TW/CW: Death of a parent, mention of cancer, absent parent,
THE GOOD 😀
This is my week for finding new indie authors and you bet your arse Hazel Jacks will be added to my favourites list. Saltaire was so bloody good, I loved reading about Penn and Raegan’s budding summer romance.
When Raegan and her friend Lily travel to Fire Island to spend the summer at Raegan’s uncles house, they make a vow to make this the best summer ever before they head off to college. When Raegan spots Penn, who’s captain of the ferry they’re travelling on, all bets are off, she’s found her summer fling. She doesn’t exactly set the best first impression though (vodka and Cheetos anyone?).
Penn, an islander and well known playboy, is destined to stay on Fire Island and run his fathers ferry company. He’s immediately smitten with Raegan and I loved how his outlook on love and relationships changed the more he got to know her. These pair had some amazing chemistry, and I loved seeing them both try and figure out their feelings and what they meant to each other.
Baring in mind that Penn had a bit of a reputation, he was so respectful of Raegan and aware that they had to keep a few boundaries in place until she turned 18. And Raegan was adorable, if a little lost at times. A people pleaser by nature, she was living her life for other people rather than herself, and I was desperate for her to take the reins back and choose a path for herself.
All in all, I adored this opposites attract, small town summer romance, with its amazing characters and idyllic sounding location. Very much looking forward to diving into the second book.
THE BAD ☹️
Raegan’s Mom. Who books time in to speak to their own daughter??
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this to read. This is my honest review.
OVERALL THOUGHT: Addictive small town romance about the joys and perils of first love STEAM LEVEL: 🔥🔥🔥 STAR RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It was supposed to be a summer of nothing but fun with her best friend, a time to enjoy her last time on Fire Island before moving away to attend college. But then she met Penn, he was so unexpected, so sweet, and so easy to fall for. Which is something she didn't want, love wasn't on the agenda, but it happened, and now she must find a way to let him go when summer's end comes.
The pages of Saltaire hold a beautifully penned slow burn romance that will tug on your heartstrings and leave you aching for more. When Raegan planned her last summer on the island she never anticipated that it would involve love, sure she was open to a fun fling, but nothing that came with feelings. Then she met Penn and completely lost herself in him, he was everything she never knew she needed. But their love had a time limit, one that would end when fall came. But as days dwindled the idea of leaving at the end of summer became almost unbearable, there was no way she could leave him. She was ready to throw away her dreams for him and stay... but it just wasn't going to work.
This story hit me straight in the heart, nothing is more precious or heartfelt than first time love. These two fell fast and hard and the connection they shared was easily felt, it was easy to see that they were meant for one another from my vantage point, but from theirs's it was a different story. I cannot wait to see how this all plays out, what the pages of the next installment will hold and where it will lead them. This story impressed on all fronts, it was well written, deeply emotive, and impossible to put down. Highly recommend you taken a chance on it, it's characters will steal your heart!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
Raegan is ready for the summer of her life on Fire Island. Finally free of high school, she and her best friend Lily are looking forward to a summer of fun and and boys (despite her older brother and uncle always watching her) before she leaves for college. Upon her arrival she meets Penn and he has all the makings of a summer fling - funny, charming and hot.
Penn is well known in the tiny beach side community, both for his family’s business and his reputation as a ladies’ man. However, upon meeting the sweet Raegan, he can’t help but feel that she means much more to him than just a summer fling.
I absolutely adored this book. It was such a sweet story of first love and all the good and bad things that go with it. However, my absolute favorite part was that this book was set in 2004. As an elder millennial, so many parts of this book brought me back to my own adolescence. With no cell phones or social media, it was really sentimental to see the characters literally biking around to talk to one another. Also, as someone who grew up on the east coast, I always love a summer beach romance.
Also, the music made me so sentimental. Konstantine by Something Corporate was featured heavily in this book and it just brought back so many memories. If you love All Too Well (10 minute version) (Taylor’s version), please listen to that song. Same vibes.
I will tell you that this is part 1, so I’m excited for part 2 and how this story continues!!!
The first of a duet in a new series. Reagan and her friend Lily are going over to Fire Island for their last summer before going to college. They are looking for a summer of fun and flings. But when they board the ferry, they meet Penn the Captain of the ferry.
Penn and Reagan both feel the heat between, but Penn is known as a playboy and Reagan only turns 18 on July 4th. It's safe to say they can't resist being together and you get some almost to sugary sweet scenes and it doesn't take a lot of guessing what occurs on her birthday !!
Both Penn and Reagan are acutely aware that this summer will come to an end. But what will they do? Reagan is due to start college, Penn is taking over the running of his adas Ferry business. There are some heart wrenching moments for both Penn and Reagan, whilst they both decided where their futures lie. You will need part 2 to find out.
This book is so good! And I cannot wait for the second one. Penn and Rae are totally swoon worthy. I need more! Penn is extremely protective and Rae accepts it perfectly. I love the fact that they really had to get to know each other before they entered into anything physical. That is what sets this book from most. The emotional connection is established before the physical connection is even an option... with that being said this is not a HEA yet. The end broke me, and I think that they could have worked something out... but this is not the end of Penn and Rae's story. I'm sure we will all be staying tuned for book number two!
I loved the summery Fire Island vibes and enjoyed the friend crew in this one. Also this is set in 2004 and I loved all the subtle references and the focus on pop punk music. I wasn’t a fan of the slow pacing and I feel like the story was majorly lacking in conflict, especially considering that this is an age gap romance. Every conflict got magically resolved within a few paragraphs, and as a reader who loves angsty stories this wasn’t my cup of tea exactly. But if you’re looking for a a cozy, low-conflict and overall more fluffy summer read with great vibes, maybe pick this one up! Beware though that it is a duet and this first part doesn’t end in an HEA.
3.5⭐️ This was a fun summer read set in the early 2000’s that made me feel like I was watching a mixture of one tree hill, the OC and gossip girl. I love the setting of Fire Island, and was really cheering for Penn and Raegan the whole time. There were a couple of questions I need answers to and I’m really hoping to get them in the sequel.
I will say I am so excited for return to saltaire, and really think I’m going to love it more than the first, based on how Saltaire ended!
This book was effing great, the connection Penn and Raegan have, the love they have for each other, the stuff they have in common, I can't even put into words how much I loved reading this book and reading about the process Penn and Raegan made, they are so perfect for each other, I had a feeling this book would break my heart somehow but I didn't think it would be like this, but no matter what happens I will always think that they are meant to be with each other.
A wonderful read that spoke to me on so many levels. I feel like if you graduated high school between 2000 and 2004 this book will totally resonate with you. Nothing like putting a heart song to every moment, good and bad, playlist taking me back to so many times and places. This book was such an emotional roller coaster, absolutely can’t wait for more!!
Even though I wanted to give it one star for RIPPING MY HEART OUT OF MY CHEST…I just couldn’t. Penn and Rae had the most perfect love story and I couldn’t imagined a better summer before college love.
I couldn’t put it down! Great (and steamy!) story. I felt like I really got to know the characters and can’t wait to hear the rest of Raegan and Penn’s story in book 2!
WOW!!! Such a GREAT read!! This is a debut novel and I am in love with everything about this book. Can't wait to get more from this new author. This is writing at it's best.
I cannot recommend this book enough. If I didn’t have to sleep, I’d have finished it in one sitting.
This book was set in 2004 and I was LIVING for it. RAZR cell phones were mentioned, CDs were used in the car, full seasons of TV shows were watched on DVD and mixed CDs were made.
Raegan always spends her summers on Fire Island. However the summer before college, she stumbles right into the man of her dreams. Literally. Penn is driving the ferry to the island and she busts her *** right in front of him while getting off. 😂
This was a story of first love on both ends. Reagan is 17 in the beginning and turns 18 in the book. Penn is 23 and such a respectful guy. He handled every situation so well. I was so anxious to see how he’d treat her the “first time” and well, A+. (Full disclosure there is one sexual thing that happens prior to her 18th birthday, but not the whole shebang)
THIS BOOK ENDS WITHOUT AN HEA AND ON A CLIFFHANGER. BOOK 2 RELEASES IN FEBRUARY.
“You’re a storm, Raegan. A hurricane. I want to rush into the center of it, completely unprepared. You make me want to do all these things I don’t normally do.”
“I’ve never been someone’s hurricane. I’m not sure I’ve ever even been someone’s rain shower, but if I’m his hurricane, then he’s my tidal wave, my storm surge, crashing into me and breaching my defenses.”
This book was one of the best I’ve ever read. The playlist was AMAZING. Penn and Raegan’s story was simply adorable but also deep. I adored how they seemed to complete each other instantly. This made me wish Summer was closer! I loved the side characters and look forward to reading more about them in book two! I had to download Return to Saltaire because I needed to see what happens with Penn and Rae.
This is book is so good! So so so good! Hazel you blew me away! Raegan and Penn had my heart from chapter 1. The side characters are fun engaging and make you want to know more about them. I’d love to go hang at Boys of Summer and ride bikes all day. Love the fact that this is set in 2004 and that one of my favorite bands and songs is mentioned! Thank you for the nostalgia! I shed a few tears, I laughed, I tingled in all the right bits. Return to Saltaire can’t come soon enough! Heart song: Screaming Infidelities by Dashboard Confessional.
I could not put Saltaire down! And it's this author's debut novel... Wow.
Saltaire was fantastic. I fell in love with Raegan and Penn from the beginning. I really enjoyed their chemistry and flirty yet inocent banter. And oh my goodness, the feels! Cute and heart-wrenching at the same time. Somewhere along the way they revealed their insecurities, longings and pain, and it's through those exchanges how they've added depth to their character.
The side characters were also pretty amazing. There's something happening with Lily, Reagan's best friend. She has a love interest of her own, but she's keeping it a secret for now. I have a hunch on who he is, and I hope I'll get to read about it.
This was a sweet story with beautiful writing. And I can't wait for more.
First love romances always make me swoon, and Raegan and Penn are no exception. I mean, what else are you meant to do on the last summer vacation before heading to college 🫢
This is only book one, so it does end on a cliffhanger, but it’s worth waiting for book two (see slide 3 for some fav quotes).
Honestly, there were moments that made me tear up. When we were able to see Reagan’s relationship with her mom, I could feel my heart breaking.
Also, towards the end, the way Penn starts talking about their relationship and what Raegan deserves?! my heart 🥺
