Rate this book

I read this book for my college class as a multicultural book. This book is a friendly eye-opening book that is meant for all ages, including adults. I will definitely be reading this to my class!

The book, What is Love? stresses the importance of knowing what love is in all that you do. It can be used in the classroom as early as kindergarten through third grade due to the deep lessons taught throughout the story. It presents a multicultural point of view on the themes of goodwill and tolerance. The author has children relate love to a rainbow and its many colors. The book states that a rainbow’s many colors blending in and out of each other are like the different feelings each person has inside that are all held together by one big feeling-love. It reminds children to love others who are different from them and to share the feeling of love with everyone. It is practical in the sense that it tells readers that sometimes it will be easier to love those similar to you but to love all and share things with others, even if they are different is the most important lesson of all. This book gives many examples of love that children and adults can consider.

I would use this book in the classroom to promote awareness of other cultures and the importance of loving all people. This may set the tone for the classroom environment early in the school year. Also, it could support a classroom rule to treat others the way you want to be treated just as in the book it says to share with other what you would want to be shared with you. I would have the students create a rainbow and have them write feelings they have towards their classmates that show their love for all. Also, I would have each student be a color and act out that feeling for the class to show all the shades of love. To further discuss the differences in cultures, I would have a discussion about the differences between ethnicities to give the students a more well-rounded view. I would compare and contrast the similarities and differences between all the different cultures in my classroom. Additionally, I would devote an entire lesson on the importance and theme of sharing as it would be beneficial to students to promote acceptance and cultural awareness. I would then do an activity where each student pairs with another student they do not know as well and who may be of a different culture. I would have the students interact using an ice breaker activity where they have to learn one thing about the culture of the student and come up with one thing that is similar about both students and one thing that is different. We would then share our findings with the class.

Overall, this would be a great book to use to promote awareness and tolerance about the many cultures in the classroom. The book expresses the idea that we should all have a mutual respect and kindness towards one another. Also, it can point out the many ways students are loved and remind students to be thankful for what they have. Comparing love to a rainbow and its many colors is a visual example that students can understand.

What Is Love? presents a multicultural point of view on the themes of goodwill and tolerance. Etan Boritzer's clear text and Robbie Marantz's spunky visuals challenge the child's natural curiosity to reflect on these contemporary issues. Setting a friendly tone and offering an even-handed approach, What Is Love? shapes cohesive and easy examples for any child (or grownup) to consider.
