I'm a self-published, award-winning fantasy fiction author of the epic fantasy fiction novel series ‘Spellcaster.’ It took me seven years to finish writing ‘Spellcaster: Guardian Undertaking.’ I am a mother of two and a wife. I care for my special needs family and use my spare time to write and self-publish my books. My favorite book genres are fantasy and romance, and I also love anime and manga.
I want to thank the author Amanda Cauchi and the publisher as I had received this through the Goodreads Giveaway. It's not what I expected and I like it!! The only reason it's not a full 5 is a few grammatical issues and there were a few moments where our main man touched that Gary Stu line but I'm so glad he never crossed it but that is just me.
The main thing...the world building is just *chief 's kiss*. So good! In addition with the communication between the character 's, delicious!!!! I'm itching to find out what happens next.
I was intrigued right away with the concept of this book. I love fantasy storylines and this book did not disappoint. I fell in love with the main character Alexandrus and was rooting for him the whole way. I loved that the romance was minimal because honestly it wasn't needed to make the story good. I can't wait to read the next in the series and would definitely recommend this book.
Spellcaster: Guardian Undertaking was a surprisingly fun read. The dynamic between the main trio was entertaining (it was honestly my favorite part of this book), the plot was engaging, and the world building was honestly spectacular, with multiple unique locations that felt vibrant and real, and distinctive magic abilities that I don’t often come across. Alexandrus was a fun main character to follow, and I enjoyed that as the story went on, other character’s povs were mixed in—done in an omniscient view, where we jump from head to head depending on the paragraph. It did take a second to get used to since I don’t often run across books written like this, but once you do it’s easy to follow. It honestly has the feel of a classic fantasy novel for the large majority of it, which was unexpected but very enjoyable for me.
My only real critics are that the book was a bit slow at points with some heavy exposition and descriptions, and that at times the dialogue were a bit stiff and formal—but neither of these ruined my enjoyment at all.
Overall I’d definitely say give this book a try, especially if you’re a fan of world building and traditional fantasy.
While the story is interesting, the flow needs work. The side quests that the main character take are long and seem unneeded. The conversations that take place are choppy and stiff. The writing in generally seems to not flow well and I couldn't finish reading after the 3rd chapter. The story does have good bones, but the flow needs help.
