In a world where fairies are caught and sold to the highest bidder, humans aren’t exactly on friendly terms with the fae folk. But friendship is exactly what Anne Halford seeks with Challe, her new fairy bodyguard, though he’s not so keen on the idea. As his master, Anne tasks him with escorting her through a particularly dangerous area, but with a reluctant fairy bodyguard eager to escape a life of servitude, she’ll have to deal with a lot more than she bargained for…
Not going to lie, I had to really push myself to keep reading the first half of this. 😅😅😅
The story world is interesting, but I really struggled with Anne. We're introduced in a way where we see how she cares for fairies in that they should be as respected as humans are, but then we see her buy a warrior fairy as a slave a few pages later. Granted, I GET that it's because she ONLY needs protection on her trip, butttt…
The going back-and-forth between "fairies are our friends" to "I just need him for this one trip" was really bothersome for me. I can't say I wouldn't be the same way if I was in her shoes, but it didn't make me like Anne any better. 🙈
I honestly felt the MOST engaged once we met a new character who is actually near the end and is the catalyst for some upcoming action (at least I think based on that ending)! It's where I wanted to keep reading and know more about these characters on a deeper level, which has me wondering if this would be a good "try three" before continuing it or not. I feel much of this volume was getting to know the situation, seeing Anne's struggles, and getting a feel for the overall world, but it didn't hook me as I expected it to.
So all-in-all, I just don't know. I didn't super dislike it (despite the push of having to force myself to keep reading in the beginning) but I didn't super like it either (despite that the ending had me wanting to see what happens next). The art is definitely pretty and might ask some friends who have read the serialized chapters if Anne grows as a heroine because I think that is my biggest "obstacle" in wanting to *eagerly* read more of this series.
I don’t think I’ll continue on with this series. I really enjoyed Challe’s character but everything else was just ok. The world that this first volume was setting up didn’t really interest me that much except for the fairy bits, Challe’s backstory, and what happened to Liz. That seemed more interesting to me. I may check out the anime instead!
The art just really doesn't work here, making this the weakest version of the story. It's stiff and awkward, and while I do like the changes to the fairy wings, it really drags the whole thing down.
I watched the anime a while ago and personally I think the anime was better but the manga is still pretty good! I am personally not a big fan of Anne. Her character is the type to be naive and too kind for her own good which I tend to dislike. I think the plot idea the author came up with it pretty good since I don’t often read books or watch shows with fairies often. A nice casual read :)
After the recent death of her mother, Anne Halford is on a quest to become a candy maker—like her mom.
To accomplish this goal, Anne must travel. Part of the journey requires she cross a dangerous stretch of land. Yo endure safe passage, Anne determines she must hire a fairy bodyguard.
In this world, fairies are caught and sold as servants to humans. Despite many people treating them like slaves, Anne was taught by her mother to treasure fairies similarly to how you’d treat humans. Anne is able to hire a lone, fairy bodyguard named Challe.
Tall, dark, and handsome, Challe is quite striking. His combat skill is also quite high. Anne hopes the two will have a strong partnership on their journey—but, Challe is not so keen to that idea.
Will this reluctant pair manage to complete their journey successfully or with they fall apart before they can make it?
This is a surprisingly good find!
Going into this story, I wasn’t expecting much more than a quaint, fairy tale—but, this story didn’t go in the direction I expected at all. Despite the discussion of fairy slavery benefiting from some more nuance, I found the introduction of this complex social dynamic to be a refreshing change to the typical fairy tail backdrop. This story touches upon some surprisingly thoughtful subject matter—loss, enslavement, female agency, etc.
I’m pleasantly surprised and I’m looking forward to reading more. I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for a good fairy story and—right now—this is fitting the bill. I’d definitely recommend for fans of high fantasy series~
compelling story of a girl who is trying to become a master candy crafter. the cute title and pretty artwork in this manga belies the rather dark world it's set in; fairies are essentially kept as slaves and forced into submission through torture of one wing that's plucked from their backs. I was not quite prepared for this going into it, but I did end up enjoying this first volume. anne is very naive, idealistic, and earnest...her fairy bodyguard challe is cold, but quickly seems to be warming up to her, at least slightly. the other human jonas needs to quit with his incessant marriage proposals...I'm curious to see where the story with his fairy goes. and the little fairy mithril following them is so cute!
note: anne is very young (15) and I hope her relationship with challe (an adult) doesn't turn into a real romantic one...he even thinks of her as childish.

literally just forced one of my best friends to pick out a random manga that he thought i’d like, and this was it. 🤣
i saw there was teeny smoosh fairy on the cover, so naturally i was down.
the art is not the best, but i’m hoping it with get better in future volumes. overall, i really enjoyed the story and i am interested in seeing how Anne and Calle’s relationship develops. (beaming sunshine accompanied by icy princely grump, classic duo 😂)
i also am eager to explore more of Anne’s background because i did key into the fact that this is a girl hurling herself into a strenuous mission 3 DAYS AFTER burying her mother. girl literally hasn’t given herself a moment to grieve, so i’d like to delve how far she goes before the cracks start appearing in her armor.
oh! and most importantly - teeny fairy smoosh is teeny fairy smoosh, and I LOVE HIM! 😍
2.5 stars. This had good elements and really annoying/problematic elements.
Good: the setting of candy makers/making is unique and visually beautiful. The worldbuilding with the politics between fairies and people has a lot of interesting relationships to explore. Some of the characters were endearing or intriguing - mostly the supporting characters who don't get much attention.
Bad: Primarily the fact that the MC is a hypocrite which remains a deeply unattractive trait. She wants to be friends with all fairies but then proceeds to buy one as a slave, and remains prejudicial about others along her journey. The story lacks real stakes or tension, and too many things happen at convenient times to force the plot along without feeling natural.
i have so much i want to say abt this manga but i really don't know how to say it?
real rough beginnings that i had to push myself to read. it feels like the heroine is wishy-washy at times with her whole stance on her views on the fairies. the slavery thing as a whole and how it was handled also really turned me off from the manga.
also our protag is 15?? how old is the ml? (tho this might just be on me since we dont have a confirmed age yet in the first vol. but also i wouldnt be surprised if he was a whole ass adult which i have so many problems with in manga.)
besides that the only real positive that i have to say abt the manga is that i love the art. the character designs aren't anything revolutionary but everything still looks great and is overall very well done.
I guess I just can't get over the main character and supposed heroine owning a slave. Sure, she seems to sincerely believe that fairies and humans should be able to live in harmony, but she still owns a fairy slave. I get that she claims that buying a slave to protect her on her journey is the only option, but is it? On the page, she never considers hiring a human bodyguard to protect her, so I don't know if that would be more expensive than buying an entire slave. And I understand that she's promised to free her slave when she gets what she wants from him, but right now, she still owns a slave.
Sweet confections that I didn't understand what they were for or what exactly they were. What was new was that fairies are hurt here and kept as slaves. I find that a bit inappropriate and very atypical for a manga. It also contrasts sharply with the cute drawing style and the sweets. Anne and Challe are okay, but I didn't really warm to either of them. The manga itself has a good message: to find yourself and follow your own path, and to know that other beings or people are just as valuable as you are. The cliffhanger at the end was okay, not extreme, but still okay. What now? To be honest, I'm not really convinced yet, but I did like the drawing style.
damn this art is um, not good - I can't keep reading
I love the anime, which is so incredibly beautiful - JC Staff has done something glorious with so little (which doesn't explain what happened to their adaptation of Requiem of the Rose King, Vol. 1 except $$$ because WHY when the manga is so perfect, it's a very literal crying shame)
Maybe…. I thought it would’ve been better than the novel? While the manga is better than the novel, I’m still bored outta my mind with the plot. For me, the only thing interesting in this book is how the fairies are created; otherwise, I don’t care! Also, the art style is decent.
It’s a pass for me, and I won’t pick up any more in this series.
Edit: I found the rest of this manga online and it’s not any better. Still not worth it.
This was such a charming story! The main character, as kind as you expect a shoujo protagonist to be, can be a little bit off putting at times. This doesn’t spoil the story for me at all however, as I do love how she treats her fairy. The fairy is also a very eye catching character, and I’m excited to see how their relationship grows in the following volumes!
I had heard this manga was cancelled, but it seems to still be publishing.
This was so fun and cute! It was my first manga, and I'm definitely hooked on this series. I can't wait to read the next one! I'm not sure how to rate this kind of book, but it was super cute. There was one minor bad word in the beginning, but it made sense as it came from a bad guy who was being a bully. Other than that, this story was very clean and sweet.
This was such a cute story! The main character is heading out to fulfill a dream after losing her mother. She has to purchase a warrior fairy for her protection, even though doing so is very wrong to her. And then someone determined to marry her has stolen after her! And then she is swindled of all her silver sugar?! Can't wait to see how this merry little group gets along in the next book!
Anne buys a fairy bodyguard to protect her on the way to a sugar candy competition.
2.5 stars - it was really the candy maker part of this that got me to try it and I liked that portion. However, Anne is 15 and buys a slave so my ability to go with the probable romance that is coming is absent. I won't be continuing in this story.
The first volume covers most of the first volume of the light novel. Anne looks different than the novel illustrations and changes dramatically with the facial expressions. I’m not sure if the entire series will be adapted as the manga started long after the books so will take a long time to catch up so the books are better to get along the story for now.
I noticed that most people that read this manga gave it low ratings and that is understandable it was not nearly as good as the light novel. However, it was still super cute, so I still loved it. In my opinion just read the light novel or watch the anime.
The anime stole my heart when I watched it last year, Having seen there's a manga adaptation I will definitely collect it. That being said, it was a wee bit slow to start but I'm just happy having one of my favourite series in my hand in English

This manga is a breath of fresh air. I like how the overall story is pretty original. I mean I never would have thought of pretty looking desserts make fairies live longer. Even the taking of the wings or how they are born. It is a really interesting manga series to me.
