Dead Men #1

When Dead Men Bleed

Rate this book
“Fate has a way of changing yer plans, mate.”

I never asked fate to change me into a Bleeder. Zombiism is all I knew, but now I’ll be hunted until they can find a way to kill me. If I hadn’t had gone down to that hum-fight, if I didn’t jump in the ring to satisfy my need for unprocessed human flesh, I'd still be accepted in society. I wouldn’t have to hide from the werewolves who can smell life on me, from the vampires who, with one drop of blood, know everything about me. Now here I am, with a gaggle of humans and human-sympathizers, trying to hide my new identity, all while trying my hardest to avoid learning about the girl who turned me.

But it’s near impossible when she’s the only one I trust.

Gore and much more
Of late I seem to be picking up books that are supernatural and apocalyptic in nature. This one is one such book. It is a creature feature that ranges from humans to Vampires, Zombies, Elves, Griffins, Minotaur, Gnomes, Fae, and Satyrs. This otherworldly species called Bleeders hover between life and death and more dangerous than Zombie.
This is a narrative about a world that lives with these myriad beings in harmony. Somewhat! I mean it is after all a post-apocalypse tale of horror. Humans are a dying species and hunted for their blood and meat.
Zeke, Etem and Cayla are the main protagonists. Zombies seem to be placed above other kind in this story. Zeke was cheated into an attack by a bleeder turning him into one. Bleeders have the ability to infect Zombies and humans. Since Bleeders are an outcast like humans, he tries to hide this fact from others. But he is an immortal and so it would be difficult to do so. A witch recognizes him and tells him where he can go and gives him a purpose. With his new status, he is left to ponder.
He sets out to find his kind when he is taking hostage. He meets Maverick, Raquel, Tanya, and other humans, bleeders, and vamps etc. there.
In the course of his adventure as a bleeder, Zeke turns into a human eventually. The story ends with a cliffhanger. But I read the author’s note and turns out Zeke’s story will continue.

Interesting

This is an interesting take on a zombie story. I enjoyed the story quite a bit. I loved the idea of zombies being intelligent and “normal”. This book was fun to read and I would like to see a sequel. There are two reasons I’m not giving this book 5 stars. The first is that the editing wasn’t great. The other reason is one particular character that I found too annoying. She was intentionally annoying and obnoxious and that would be fine, except that she’s always there. I felt like I couldn’t get away from her.

A New Twist on Zombies

Loved how the book did not take the traditional route on how zombies are portrayed. The characters and plot were well developed. Overall I really enjoyed reading this book.

Zombies!

Not a fan of zombies but this was great! Fast paced and thrilling storyline. Seems like there’s a part two which would be worth reading.

fantastic surprise

OK, this book was shockingly and ridiculously good. Let me just say that the cover does not do it justice, and I’m so glad I ignored it and read the book anyway because I normally would not have picked it up.

I thought, perhaps I was reading a zombie book, then I thought maybe it was a vampire book. Turns out it’s quite the combination of genres and so well written in the process. I’m really excited to read a lot more from this author.

WHEN DEAD MEN BLEED by K.Weikel is a mystical novel. It is a story of zombies who are too fragile to fight. It has covered all the aspects and details about zombies, which made it interesting and worth reading.

Zeke and Mikey are the two main characters of the story. Zeke, the zombie, the one who has some anger issues and is somewhere where he shouldn't be.

*CURIOUSITY*
Zeke is in a hole-in-the-wall place to see illegal human fighting. Somehow, his prey reaches up and scratches him... Why?? Zombies don't bleed.
So why is he bleeding from his cheek???

Good but could have been better.

This chronicle is about a zombie named Zeke who transforms into something rather unique. Along the way, he meets other supernatural beings and has quite a few experiences. Read this tale to find out more.

Let me start by saying that I love the book cover, and I think it is better than the one she made for the sequel When Dead Men Breathe.

The arena that Zeke and the other supernatural creatures were in was amusing too. I like the description of the vampires and bleeders. I thought it was cool that the vampires had red irises, that they could camouflage themselves, and turn into bats. Well done!

It was a nice surprise to see the skull illustrations in the book; I thought that was genius.

First, this book would have benefited from keener editing as I noticed some errors in the text. Second, this novel would have been better if it was shorter. I noticed that the pace of the book slowed down, but the beginning did have me absorbed by it. Third, K. Weikel should think about hiring a professional beta reader to grade her work before publishing it. That way, she can level up her story. Finally, I felt that this book was all over the place, regarding zombies, bleeders, and humans.

I recommend releasing a second edition of this novel to fix some of these issues.

The metamorphosis that can take place between species didn't make sense to me, even though this is fantasy writing. I can understand a human becoming a vampire or a human becoming a werewolf, but for transformations regarding the main character? That might have been overdoing it. Normally, in other fictional works, zombies already bleed, and I found it strange that in this universe zombies are fragile creatures that can think. The mindless zombies made more sense, but they were also useless.

This may just be me, but I found Mikey to be irritating. Since Zeke despises her, I ended up not liking her, and it was troubling to see her pop up as much as she did. This could have been "fixed" by shortening the book a little bit or by having something happen to her so she could disappear.

K. Weikel is a talented writer, and I look forward to reading her other literary works. But she should invest more money and time into her books.

I was torn between giving this text a 3-star or 4-star rating. For me, it is not a five-star book, but it by no means is a two-star book either. In the end, I ended up giving her a 4-star rating because of the awesome book cover, the skull illustrations to match, a great introduction and rendition of the vampires, and a decent narrative.

Quite unique

This story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humans are the food. Zombies, vampires, fairies, and other supernatural creatures rule. The book is written from the perspective of a male zombie (yes, they are sentient beings, for the most part.) His journey of transformation is the catalyst for changing the entire world. I was enthralled throughout and can’t wait to read the next volume.

Dark, Gritty, and Action-Packed!

When Dead Men Bleed is a thrilling blend of post-apocalyptic horror and supernatural mayhem. The world is brutal, the stakes are high, and the characters are raw and compelling. With vampires, werewolves, and an outlawed group of Bleeders caught in the chaos, this book delivers nonstop action and heart-pounding tension. A must-read for fans of dystopian fantasy with a dark edge! 🩸🔥

Fascinating!!

Wow! What a cool concept where zombies are still sentient and a part of society. The book was clever and creative.

My one wish is that there had been a touch more editing and a bit more “showing” rather than “telling.”

Surprisingly fun

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book but was pleasantly surprised. You’re immediately catapulted into a well thought out fantasy world. It’s a very fast read with short, digestible chapters.
