The Mistake

Rate this book
Vanessa Rossi finally landed her dream job, working for Maxwell Investments.
This has been her only goal ever since a mistake, years ago almost cost her future.
Since then, she remained focused on making a name for herself, while protecting her heart at all costs.

One night of celebrating ends in a steamy one-night stand with a man she couldn’t keep her eyes, or her hands off.
But when she sneaks out of his place in the middle of the night, she thinks she’s wiped her hands clean of him.

Monday morning, when she comes face to face with her one-night stand, as he introduces himself as her new boss, she fears it was just another mistake.

Adam Maxwell has always made decisions for other people, which is how he ended up as CEO of his father's company in Chicago. When an unexpected night opens his eyes, and his heart, will he be able to stay away?

Working together was easy, keeping their hands off each other was another story.

When the job starts hitting a little too close to home, jeopardizing people's careers, will they be able to work together to stop it? Or will Vanessa do what she always has, and run.

One mistake may ruin everything, or it could be what you’ve waited your whole life for.

disappointingly dull

Started off good but became boring and dull very quickly. No angst and storyline was weak. Sorry but I was not impressed.

I just cannot get these two out of my head!! I loved their chemistry and really their authenticity with each other and those around them. The whole story felt so real and raw at times while still having that levity to it as well to balance it all out.

Vanessa seemed like a wallflower at first so she definitely surprised with how her character progressed throughout the book. She really started to grow a backbone as the book went along when dealing with Adams past and her own. The drama with Vanessa’s dad, was a good addition and helped amp up that intensity in the book overall and added another layer to her as a character as well as Adam too as his protective nature really came out. And the culmination of everything into that meeting was a really great idea! I thought Vanessa would give him more of a hard time about keeping things from her. It definitely felt like it all was resolved a little too quick for me and I just wanted so much more and even hoping for some groveling. And can we talk about that club scene with the drama from Holly. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing and cheering Vanessa on. It was perfect

What made the story special and the perfect setup for the next books is the family dynamics we experienced in this book. As a first book in the series, it did a nice job balancing the world building with Vanessa and Adam's story so it wasn't too heavy on one or the other. The dialogue with all the family had me laughing hysterically throughout the whole book. Caleb might be my favorite brother other than Adam. What a goofball?!?! I could almost picture him pouting and throwing that tantrum over the cookies and their banter as brothers was perfect. While Caleb was one of my favorites you could also see so many of the possibilities for what other relationship there might be to come. I could cut that tension with a knife between them and I’m so curious.

I’m so excited to see what is next for this series and what is next for Lexi James! Thank you for sending me an ARC of this book!

Mega congrats to Lexi James on taking the leap and publishing her first book! It was mostly an enjoyable read, but I had trouble relating to the FMC who came in as a cyber-security expert and then did very little apart from play with a firewall once.

It started really good and the characters’s chemistry was lovable but the development of the story felt a little rushed and incomplete.

A fabulous book

If this was Lexi debut book wow, I loved it.

Adam and Vanessa story was a delight to read both characters had there reasons for not wanting to open there hearts you get the story from both and you get to travel with them through there journey together.

what made this book was the relationship Adam had with his Family and Vanessa had the Blaire.

Adam had a surprise kink that took me my surprise but when you really look at him you can see it straight away.

for me it’s 5 ⭐️ read

Really enjoyed this book- it’s hard to believe this is the author’s debut!

Adam and Vanessa meet in a club, spend the night together and she leaves before he wakes up. So imagine their surprise when she starts her dream job a few days later and meets her new boss!

As well as their relationship there is a suspense element to this story too. Romantic suspense isn’t always my favourite as I feel like it sometimes takes away from the romance storyline in a book, but this one was really well balanced and the couple were very much at the forefront of this story.

I’m looking forward to reading more of the Maxwell family’s stories. Lexi can we please have Reece and Amelia’s book?!

I’ll be honest guys, I had zero expectations for this one going in. You know me, I don’t read a lot of contemporary romance, but this one…this one hit the sweet spot.

Vanessa is the FMC who just got a new job, but everything was done over the phone, via email, so she’s never met her new bosses irl. She’s nervous about it, so her best friend Blaire decides to take her out for the night her a little tipsy, maybe meet someone 😏
Vanessa hasn’t had a relationship in a while. She’s been closed off because shes had a one too many reasons not to trust people.

Adam, our MMC, well…he just happens to be out with his brothers that same night, at that very club Vanessa is going to.
When he sees her it’s like an instant connection, but Adam doesn’t do relationships either.

They have an AMAZING night together, Vanessa leaves before that awkward morning after.

She’s feeling great, walking into work Monday morning. And then she meets her new boss.
I think you know where this is going….
Adam Maxwell, CEO of Maxwell Investments.

There’s just something about boss/employee romance, ya know?

So will they learn to work together with this awkward sexual tension or will it be something more? Or was it just a mistake?

“Sometimes, I feel like I’m not enough. I finally get this girl to look my way when she’s been refusing to let her walls down for anyone. How do I know that I’m worth her time? I don’t want her to regret all of this and think I was a mistake.”

This was such a good read for me and coming from an almost all dark romance reader 😅 I feel like that says something.

Their cute banter. The found family. The learned trust. The filthy dirty talk 🥵
