Healer of Kingdoms #1

A Prince So Cruel

Rate this book
He needs my help, but he’ll be my downfall.

A prince by morning.
A cad by noon.
A beast by nightfall.

There is a curse on his blood, an ailment that, if revealed, could destroy his kingdom.

The only one who can help him is me, a human with average healing abilities. It’s what the Envoy told him, and her word is law.

I’m his only hope.

He sends his blue-blooded friends to kidnap me so I can join their quest to Mount Ruin, the only place where I can heal him.

The path is dangerous, and I don’t know the entire truth. The prince is hiding something from me. To make matters worse, he isn’t always proper. A Fae prince isn’t supposed to lust for a human, especially when she’s his prisoner. And a human girl isn’t supposed to burn for someone so out of her league.

The quest might kill me, but it’s my heart I’m worried about.

----

This is a fantasy romance featuring a troubled prince, a strong heroine, and an amazing supporting cast. Enemies-to-lovers series suitable for 18+ which grows darker with every book. It's the first of a trilogy and ends on a cliffhanger. For fans of Sarah J. Maas and Jennifer L. Armentrout.

i understand being inspired by a book but at what point does inspiration become plagiarism to an author? because this was genuinely i rip off of both acotar and the cruel prince. the fae world is “Elf-hame” and there’s a side character named Cardian lol not to mention the romance was just instalove and bland, there was also waaay too much modern slang in this book for it to feel like a fantasy.

{these are obviously my own opinions and you don't need to feel like you have to like/not like a book because I did. if you're uncertain or have read mixed reviews about the current book, give it a chance anyway, if you can.}

I'm gonna start this review by pointing out a few things.
First, this book had absolutely no right title and font-baiting me so hard. I don't think I need to elaborate on why.
If anything, it could resemble ACOTAR, not TCP.
Yes, I've read the blurb and I definitely wasn't expecting a The Cruel Prince retelling, but...same font? Almost same title? Sounds made on purpose, to me.
And second...a character named Cardian? Really???

Anyway, despite what my TCP-loving, petty ass might think of the title, this book wasn't that bad.
Seymour's writing is alright and the plot, while it could still be improved, is very fast-paced and the books never has a dull moment. It also jumps straight into the story, right from the beginning, and to me, that's always a positive trait.
I recommend you get into this not expecting anything, especially not anything complicated.

I unfortunately had a hard time liking Dani, the main character; she sounded impossibly immature and had the habit of replying with swear words to everything people told her that she didn't like.
To me, the banter some reviewers felt the need to praise, was nothing but this. That's what kids think makes you look and sound like a badass. Again, very immature.

I found the rest of the character very basic and could hardly distinguish them from one another; I like Jeondar a little more than the others, but eve he fell flat in the end.
Speaking of the end...meh. The third act conflict where was unbearable to read. I felt like it was very artificial and put there for the sake of drama.
I also didn't like how the whole secret thing drug out for so long. I would have walked out on all of them and took their food with me. And why not, I would have taken Jeondar with me, as well.

Least but not last...THE PRINCE.
I couldn't for the life of me think of him as a worthy male love interest.
He was as appealing as plain toast at an all-you-can-eat buffet, and his non-existent cruelty is what makes the title of this book even less believable. The ending makes up for it a little, but more than "cruel" I'd use a term that starts with A and ends with -SSHOLE.

One thing I'm really glad about is that at least this isn't an insta-love kind of situation, and there was very little chemistry between Dani and Kalyll. I couldn't understand how they got from enemies to whatever they was, but to call this a soul-consuming enemies-to-lovers would be a big stretch.

I know that this book is a spin-off, so I didn't expect much backstory on Dani or the fae realm, but I wouldn't have minded some, especially considering this could be read as a standalone. I also figured out a little after I started it that this is a Beauty and the Beast retelling, and let me tell you...it's by far the weakest one I've read.

Hoping the author will address the fact that this is going far beyond 'inspired by the cruel prince'.

This is straight up copying another franchise and tricking readers into thinking this is a sequel or spinoff.

Between the cover title (come on.... are you serious?), to the title font and illustration (you're just taking the piss now) to the place being called Elf-hame and it being about a fae prince (seriously?) to there being a character called Cardian (wow) .... this just screams lazy and trying to capitalize off another authors success.

I'm going to publish a book called "Courts of Thorns with Roses" and say its set in Pry-thian and the cover will be red and black with a girl on the front. I'll also name a character Rhysiand just for good measure.

Love to see more authors making their way into publishing, I especially love to see fantasy romance being taken on. But this is not okay.

3 Mount Doom Ruin Stars ⭐️

You know how every year around Christmas, Hallmark puts out 20 different Christmas Romance Movies that are all the same? These movies all have the same plot, same characters, and same story but you watch them anyway because you are a sucker for them. This book is like that for me. I was a sucker for the premise as it has all my guilty pleasure tropes (mostly the enemies to lovers with a twist on beauty and the beast)...However it's been a day since I read it, and I have to wrack my brain to remember what happened because the story is almost forgettable, blending into the 19 other stories just like it.

The story is told from Dani's perspective, who is very early on kidnapped by some Fae in Elf-Hame. It turns out she is needed to help lift a blood curse on the Seelie Prince, so is forced to join his troupe of "friends" (from various season courts -_-) while they trek to Mount Doom Ruin.

The only part of the world-building I liked was the mentions of how the Human Realm and Fae realm have combined healing techniques. This was definitely something unique I have not seen before. Other than that the world building consists mostly of just describing places. I read this as a standalone and it's my first Ingrid Seymour book, so I am giving it the benefit of the doubt that the lack of world-building is due to the fact that this book takes place in her already-defined universe, that she might have described in the other books

The only decent character is Dani as she does show "fight and teeth" based on the situation she has been placed in and is actually astoundingly caring and compassionate. BUT she also astoundingly stupid for falling for the prince. The Prince is VERY one dimensional (even with his two dimensional mood swings). I do not actually understand what Dani sees in him and why she has this sense of being drawn to him. He treats her like an ASSHOLE, even when he is not "in the asshole phase" and she just accepts it almost to jump his bones.

The side characters are AWFUL! Whilst some have a few distinctions, they almost all have the same personality. I couldn't distinguish between Silver and Kryn for the longest time! Jeondar is sweet and would have been a much better love interest for Dani imo but the whole SPLIT PERSONALITY they all collectively had as well just made NO SENSE. They went from disinterest to an "understanding" to just treating Dani like shit, when she had LITERALLY no choice in being there and it's not her fault the prince wants her...

There are also so many things about the plot I just don't understand, and there isn't a real sense of villain either. Mostly this story is just a "journey" narrative so if you like that type of story you might actually enjoy this. Everyone is on the move with reaching a specific destination being the goal.

The main questions I have are:

Overall this was a pretty weak retelling with a few unique elements that did keep me captivated in the writing. If like me, Beauty and the Beast Retellings is your catnip, you might enjoy this...just go in knowing this is no Blockbuster Disney version but the made for TV one.

I read this thinking it would be a hilariously bad rip-off of The Cruel Prince, but it wasn’t.

I mean, it was hilariously bad, just not a rip off of The Cruel Prince.

Yes, there are similarities. The name of Elfhame was taken and oh so cleverly reworked into Elf-hame. There was mention of a prince named Cardian? Which honestly just made me bust out laughing. And yeah, fae prince, but every other book coming out recently is about a fae prince so whatever.

The book is meant for adults yet the writing quality reads like it was intended for 7th graders. Perhaps this is meant to reflect how the main character has the emotional maturity of a 7th grader. I dunno. What I do know it that I’m very strong and brave for powering through it.

Edit: Just want to amend that Elfhame isn’t even an original concept by Holly Black. It dates back to 19th century Scottish folklore, generally used in reference to the Queen of Elfhame. Also spelled Elphame and Elf-hame. Ya learn something new every day!

I started this not knowing that this book is the one booktok's hating on, because the audiobook has a different cover.

Let me tell you something: It's NOTHING like The Cruel Prince by Holly Black.

I honestly find it unfair for people to label this book as a rip-off and belittle the author due to similarities in font, title, and the fact that the fae realm is called Elf-hame. As many people pointed out, Holly Black isn't the one who came up with the "Elfhame" name.

If you're looking for an adult version of The Cruel Prince, this isn't it.

This wasn't my cup of tea 😔
DNF at 40%

I had hopes this would be a quick fun read but I just wasn't able to go through it .

1- the vocabulary and general writing was..off?

I read A LOT and all in english , and  is the first time I read in a book the term " flip the bird " .

I know is a usa slang but for me at least is like..too much slang 😅 for a book . And it was repeated at least 4 times In the first 40% of the book .

Is like if I write a book and put " que mirá bobo" . 🤨There are expressions that are just too "local" and is best to leave them out if you want to reach a broader audience. ( unless you are writing about locals who speak like that )

Being this an urban high fantasy book IDK it felt off.

2. The found family trope .
I'm quite wary when it comes to this trope. And this is a case where a LOT of characters were presented very early in the book and I couldn't follow who was who.

When I thought I could at least remember 2 of them 1 one more character appeared out of nothing to complicate things.

It was just too much.

Maybe this book can appeal to people with a taste for urban fantasy ( the likes of crecent city ) it uses similar vocabulary and setting .

Manages to make the interesting and bizarre concept of a magical realm with a Fae prince suffering from a weird werewolf blood curse immensely boring.

It’s actually kind of impressive when you think about it.

Also anyone accusing this book of plagiarism against ACOTAR or The Cruel Prince didn’t read the book. SJM and Holly Black didn’t invent Fae nor did either of them invent Elfhame. We can acknowledge a book being un-enjoyable without making stuff up about it. Very strange, very weird stuff going on from a certain crowd claiming critical and honest engagement with the work.

I absolutely loved this book! The romance was perfectly paced, with incredible sexual tension and chemistry that had me hooked. On top of that, the plot kept things exciting and added so much depth to the story. I’m diving straight into book two—I can’t wait to see what happens next!

i picked this up because i was enticed by all the good reviews but i was severely misled. i usually don't dnf so quickly but i just could not stomach the way this is written.

the mc's personality and decision making have absolutely no consistency and its wildly confusing to read. one moment she's being nice and then a few lines later she's insulting people or suddenly enraged for seemingly no reason. the same goes for the prince and the other characters.

if the writing is already this rough i cannot anticipate this getting much better.

First Toni Sunder found love and adventure in the Mate Tracker series. Then little sister Lucia Sunder did the same in the Demon Hunter trilogy. Now it's their bigger sister Daniella "Dani" Sunder's turn in Healer of the Kingdoms.

Looks like Ingrid Seymour is jumping from Urban fantasy to just fantasy in Healer of the Kingdom. Dani Sunder is about to have an adventure in the faerie realm that she is never gonna forget. I know I sure won't because this story was great.

Dani Sunder is the calm, collected, responsible type. She's a big sister to two sisters who are a magnet for trouble and a healer. Her magic and knowledge make her very skilled at what she does and I love that she has confidence in that. However, she's also a Sunder, and make her mad enough she'll go off. I like Dani, I also liked that she was strong, caring, and confident with strong empathy. My only issue with her is that she takes responsibility for certain people's actions, trying to be understanding but that wasn't something I felt like she should have done. Blame needs to be placed on the responsible parties.

I met Prince Kalyll in the Mate Tracker series and I liked him. He wasn't bad for a fae or a Prince but after reading this book, I'm not so sure. He kidnaps Dani to Elfhame, he's polite and courteous but not sorry for his actions. He could have done things a different way but didn't. Things change between Dani and Kalyll along the way, the attraction is strong but he's still making questionable decisions along the way. I wanna like him more but he does dumb stuff.

As for the other characters in this book they left a lot to be desired. The way his cadre behaved was unacceptable. Their actions, the looks, the remarks, all of it grated on my nerves, especially when they are the ones who took her because they needed something from her. I don't like the group.

The story is described as having hints of Beauty and the Beast, and I can definitely see that but also with hints of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as well. The story was a grand adventure in the wilds of faerie with monstrous giant sand crabs, scary shifters, and possible attacks. The secrets are plenty and I'm still not convinced that Dani knew everything. My favorite part was visiting the Summer Court which was described as a grander, more beautiful version of Venice, and the apothecary that would make a grow witch giggle with glee. A lot of tea was spilled at the end which has me believing an even bigger plot is going on. Never trust a royal and most definitely don't trust a faerie. The game's afoot.

Healer of the Kingdoms was everything I expected from a fae fantasy. Cruel fae, a devious plot, lies, betrayal, murder, gilded palaces, beautiful Season courts, lush balls beautiful gowns, delicious food, and so much more. The ending of HoK has me both heartbroken and on the edge of my seat. I'm really excited to see where Seymour takes Dani's story next.

Like several others, in my own personal opinion I cannot understand the extremely positive reviews for this book.

Right from the start, I was irritated by the style of writing and the MC. When you're essentially seconds away from being kidnapped/attacked, is it particularly realistic or relatable to go on a mile long mental tangent covering world building, your day so far and everything in between? I had a bad feeling and it didn't improve from there on. The MC who I have already forgotten the name of, was very annoying and acted like a child much of the time, with random outbursts of swearing, jumping to conclusions and just in general being unlikeable. Her only redeeming feature was that initially she cared about how her being kidnapped could affect others. That being said, none of the side characters are particularly likeable or had depth to them either, including the LI, prince something beginning with R. Tattooes, smoke and midnight hair, this is such a new concept!

I can't really think of many positives, there are so many better books about the fae than this one, I'm hesitant to leave 1 star as it wasn't quite as bad as some others I have read. I DNF'ed at 45%, so if it did in fact get better from there, I do apologise for my hastiness in writing a slightly bitchy review.

I was so disappointed in this book. It felt like I was reading the very first novel of a new author which in and of itself is not a bad thing. But it just felt very underdeveloped with regards to plot and characters. The main female characters in her dialogue got very repetitive and annoying at times. There was no real connection with any of the characters main or side at any point and the relationship both romantic and friendship-wise have seemed very rapid and forced. Also the dialogue was quite basic and at times a little bit childish I feel. So for these reasons and a few more I will not be reading the other two books in the series and I'm still deciding on whether or not I'll give the author another chance.

A Prince so Cruel is a fun fantasy romance that weaves together elements of Beauty and the Beast in a refreshing and unique way. This delightful tale brings readers a mix of enemies-to-lovers dynamics, a slow burn romance, and a fascinating fantasy world..

The story revolves around Daniella (Dani), a human healer who becomes entangled in the fate of Kalyll, a cursed prince of the Fae realm. Tasked with aiding him on a mission to save his kingdom, Dani finds herself drawn into a journey filled with danger, betrayal, and an unexpected connection that grows between her and the troubled prince.

Ingrid Seymour skillfully crafts the narrative from Dani's perspective, granting us a strong and independent protagonist who defies the stereotype of a passive captive. Dani's spirited nature and refusal to back down make her an incredibly likable character, and her interactions with Kalyll and the supporting cast add a bit of depth and humor to the story.

Kalyll, the male lead, is presented as a complex character. Initially sweet and polite, he harbors a hidden darkness that leaves readers intrigued and eager to uncover his secrets. The chemistry between Kalyll and Dani is both tantalizing and forbidden, with their feelings slowly intensifying throughout the book.

As a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, "A Prince so Cruel" incorporates elements of the classic tale while adding its own twists and surprises. The slow burn romance aspect keeps readers yearning for more, and the author's ability to build tension between the characters is commendable.

The settings were well described and the banter among the characters adds a lively touch to their relationships. While the pacing occasionally feels dry, the story overall keeps readers engaged and eager to uncover the truth behind the curse and the ultimate fate of the characters. The ending, with its bittersweet turn and mini cliffhanger, leaves readers both satisfied and craving more, eagerly anticipating the next installment of the series.

In conclusion, "A Prince so Cruel" delivers a captivating fantasy romance that successfully blends the familiar elements of Beauty and the Beast with its own unique flair. With a strong and vibrant protagonist, intriguing character dynamics, and a slow-burn romance that builds with tantalizing tension, this book is a delightful read for fans of the genre. While the pacing may have faltered at times, the overall storytelling and engaging world-building make it well worth the journey. I eagerly look forward to the next book in the series.

Omg this book was such a fun amazing read!

First off, Dani was so strong and even though she was going through so much, she stayed strong-willed and hardly faltered. It wasn't instant love, which happens more often than not in a lot of books. Prince Kalyll was such a likable character, even with everything he is going through. I loved the banter between all the friends/guards and the mfc.

I'm always a sucker for beauty and the beast retelling, and this retelling was so amazing. This story takes off right from the first page. There isnt a couple of chapters to work up to the kidnapping or meeting between characters like usual. It didn't follow the same path of most retellings where it's the girl, the prince, and maybe one broody best friend of the prince, all stuck in an enchanted forrest or an abandoned castle. It takes place on the road traveling, through kingdoms and forrests and surrounded by not only the group but in cities and surrounded by populated areas. The betrayal near the end had me going over every character and how they acted, trying to figure out who amongst them was behind it, i was wrong on who I suspected, lol. This book ended on a cliffhanger. The curse was supposedly lifted, but now more is in play due to circumstances that happened near the end of the book, and im super excited to see what happens next. My heart hurts for Dani, and I'm angry at the prince and his friends for how things ended for Dani before she left to go back home. I feel betrayed for her because everyone knew nothing could ever come of anything that happened between the prince and her, but remained quiet and she was the one hurt at the end even after everything she did for the group and had her life uprooted from being kidnapped. This book has become one of my favorite books this year. It was such an easy read that just sucks you in. I absolutely can not wait for the second book!

I love Beauty & the Beast retellings and this one was just MEH. If you enjoy slow burn, tension, funny banter between characters, this is for you. I found it quite weird to mix modern day humans with historic Fae realms, but this author does that quite well. I just wish the MMC was a little more less infuriating even though I know it’s his beast side that’s giving off that vibe. There just wasn’t enough “sweet” moments between the love interests to keep me that invested that they have really fallen for each other. I didn’t connect with the side characters as much as I do in other books besides for Jeondar. With secrets still to be revealed, I’m really invested to see how this story continues. Can’t wait to read the next book to this series.

“It’s not just me who feels this way, is it?” I shook my head. “It’s not.” He leaned closer, his nose nearly touching mine. “Good, because I mean to make you mine.”

Let me just tell you the choke hold this book had on me. I was pulled in from the moment I opened it. The cover is so beautiful and just draws you in. The characters are so well written and the plot is just chefs kiss. The backstory’s of the different characters and the personalities were so well written. I loved the banter between the character and this book had me feeling so many emotions at once it was amazing it felt as if I was in the story with the characters. I screamed when I got left on a cliffhanger at the end and Kalyll needs to GROVEL and I mean GROVEL next book he did her so wrong after she saved his life and multiple people in that groups lives. Overall I really loved this book and can’t wait for the next one when it comes out!
