Love surging like a wave!
Book 2 of the most fabulous fantasy romance.

Alto falls into the sea and is saved by Manieri, the warrior priest of the west. In the meantime, Elva is terribly anxious but unable to leave the southern sea, so he waits for the new moon – the only night when monsters don’t appear – and rushes to look for Alto.

When they finally meet again, Elva bursts into tears. Alto, unable to hold back his overwhelming love for him…

“Is it wrong to tell you how I feel?”
“I don’t need… love and romance.”

The more they are apart, the deeper their feelings become. The devoted doggy-like attendant and his unsociable cool master are rapidly getting closer in this second volume.

This series is so interesting. I seriously need more fantasy BLs. I love that is is quite action packed and it somehow raised even more questions than vol 2! I am so curious about what is going to happen. Also god, I need Alto and Elva to smooch properly and to stop being cockblocked please :))

It’s still interesting but it suffers from the fate of all second volumes, where one complication is added on top of another and no real solutions or answers are to be had because that’s coming in volume 3.

Alto’s reunited with Elva and fam, and there’s been a progression in their relationship (yay). But now we have to contend with other things, such as, the monsters in the sea, and what that possessed body is planning to do. On top of these monsters from the sea, we have regular evil people who can’t fucking leave well enough alone because they’re rich and rich people feel like they DESERVE things simply because they’re rich.

And I am keeping my fingers crossed that that disgusting, despicable nobleman “Shiyon” meets a slow and torturous death. I fucking hate what he said to Elva not because Elva but because of what it implied. I wanted to step inside the book and rip his guts out then feed it to him.

This volume is more lonely compared to the first one. It's probably because it sharpened everything introduced in the first book: the loneliness of the Kannagi, the aching romance and tension between duty and love, and the unsettling mystery surrounding everything. Especially, that Shiyan and Valkyrie hinting political danger lurking behind the personal tragedies. Oh, I fucking hate them already.

And aside from Alto and Elva being apart, we get to be introduced to another Kannagi who is someone who writes letters to people who will never read them, and their family whom they were forced to be parted with. I'm just so sad about their fate. Well, at least Elva and Alto's relationship now stands on something certain and solid, hehe. But it is both a salvation and a burden if you think about what Alto's cousin has said, about hurting people with love. Argh, my head is so noisy!

This volume's pacing was a bit disjointed. The transitions didn't feel as smooth as with the first one, but it's still interesting. The cover is so deceiving because it makes you think they're happy throughout when they are really not for most of it ;; I want to know more about what the black-sea-possessed people are planning and Shiyan can, as Elva kindly put it, f*ck off. I truly dislike characters like him. I can already tell there's so much angst to come ;;

Mangaka: Ichika Yuno
Band: 2
Status: laufend
Genre: Fantasy, Drama

Vol. 1 ★★★★★

Vol. 1 is such a joy to read that this one falls short in comparison. For one, Elva and Alto spend most of this volume apart. When they're finally back together, they struggle to get their feelings across. While miscommunication is one of my favorite tropes, the execution here is awkward and frustrating. Hoping the next volume with be better.

I’m really enjoying this series. This volume was a little angstier because of the separation between Alto and Elva. Their feelings were exploding all over each other. But it ended up shaping into something sweet and cute. I’m looking forward to watching as their relationship evolves.

The Kannagi are interesting. Definitely not like anything I’ve read before. We didn’t find out too much extra about them in this one that we didn’t already know from the first. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot more in the next volumes.

I’m also curious to find out more about what this skeevy Lord is up to. Him and a bunch of other people are so gross toward the Kannagi. I hope their perception and judgement changes sooner rather than later.

The plot thickens! This gives me sort of the same vibes as King’s Maker…there are definitely some darker elements to the plot that are coming to light, and there was one scene in particular that was sort of weird and icky but overall I’m invested and will probably read every volume that comes out!

Gosh I adore Elva and Alto so much, and I also ADORE this story. I just keep making lots of theories of what is going on in this island and how many secrets are there.
I need volume 3 asap!!!
(Also I’m lord Shiyan’s #1 hater. We don’t so see so much of this man, but the little we saw of him made me hate him)

3.5 stars? The plot is a bit more straightforward this time, if a little fast-paced. Alto returned to Elva an awful lot faster than I'd expected; I'm not sure how many days people were meant to have been searching for him, but it seemed like he only spent a day with the other kannagi, and then maybe some time on the road? None of that was shown, though, and we transitioned pretty rapidly between scenes.

The romantic development was also a little uneven. The confessions were good, and I think it's reasonable for Alto to have pulled back - he wasn't sure how much Elva actually wanted, or even how much he understood about what Alto wanted, with how sheltered he's been. But it took them a frustratingly long time to talk about it again. I understand why Elva was so confused about what was going on with Alto, because I was too!

At least Alto did finally bring things up at the festival date, clarifying what his hesitation was...only to get interrupted by that strangely invasive nobleman.

I don't know what his deal is, or which characters are trustworthy at this point. I'd thought Alto was wrong to be suspicious of Letty and Konoe, but with the way the volume ended, I'm no longer sure.

And I just find it...devastating if that other kannagi is going to die again, this quickly. I know it's the point of the worldbuilding - something that's been happening for a long time and that Alto is desperate to keep Elva protected from...but I liked that character so much in that short space of time.

The whole kannagi system is heartbreaking, and I hope Alto can find a way to dismantle or improve it all - not just for Elva, but for all of them.

I wasn't entirely sure if I'd like this story as it kept going, but I'm definitely intrigued, and I minded Alto's wide-eyed-enthusiasm less in this volume. Maybe because he started to look a bit less like a puppy and more like a serious man trying to figure out how to save the love of his life.

The precious moments between Alto and Elva are the sweetest thing I've seen in weeks.
After reading the last of A Cruel God Reigns I wanted to read something with less violence.
Yaoke no uta is therapeutic.
It's refreshing to read a story with main characters who don't tolerate nonsense from people trying to keep them apart, who discuss their problems with a situation instead of avoiding each other for days, weeks and months at a time and who genuinely love each other.
Alto finally admitted to his feelings towards Elva and Elva is becoming more expressive with his feelings.
More is revealed about Elva's past and the abilities of the creatures that appear from the cursed sea.
Shiyon(the aristocrat from volume 2) is suspicious.
His creepy behavior towards Elva makes me wonder and worry about what may have happened to Elva and what his life was like when he was working for Shiyon's family.
I can tell he is going to become a problem for Elva and Alto throughout the next volume.
