A classic western novel from Frank Wheeler with non-stop epic adventure and a blend of western romance
Dwight Crawford saw the kid in the gray uniform. He wanted to help. He was tired of watching men die. Especially boys.
“Kid. If anyone asks, you’re my son, ” Dwight said.
Austin looked at him. “How do I know I can trust you?”
Dwight looked at him. “You don’t. You’ll just have to take my word for it that I’m one of the good guys. Time will tell the rest.”
At ten years old, Austin was in over his head. He only joined the Confederate Army because his brothers told him to, but then they went and got themselves killed. If not for Dwight Crawford, a Union soldier, Austin would have died alongside them.
From that day on, Dwight became Austin’s hero, friend, and father. Years later, they’re still fighting together, but the enemy has changed.
This time, they’re hunting The Cobra. Some say he’s a myth. Others say he’s the greatest criminal in the West, maybe even the country. And he’s just abducted Sherry Parsons, the daughter of Utah’s wealthiest copper baron. Sherry is kind, beautiful, and in serious trouble.
When Dwight and Austin are hired to bring her home, they gladly accept the job. Austin never thought he’d fall in love, or that The Cobra might be his undoing. Can they outsmart The Cobra, or is this one battle they can’t win?
Each novel in the series is a standalone western which can be read out of order.
I’m not sure why others gave this a favorable review. There is nothing in the scene settings that establish this as a western; or period correct. The scene settings were skimpy at best. The plot was generic and somewhat predictable. There were scenes where a gun was fired, but not heard. The sound of a gun shot can travel miles. Nothing was done about the guns gear, and money left laying around so many bodies. The two main characters were good, but the continued details were light. I’m really disappointed that I paid money to read this; especially given the multiple errors when it came names and their actions. This author really needed it proof read before it was published.
Another great western story that start in the Civil War where a Yankee solider saves a rebel drummer boy and takes him to be his own. Many adventures follow them as they become bounty hunter who help people in distress.
This book kept my interest all the way through. A lot of missed connections to keep you interested. Several miss directions to make you wonder who the real crooks were.
Love this book, great story line. Was not ready for it to end, although it was a good ending. I am looking forward to another great story, couldn’t hardly put it down was a bit surprised by the end but also happy with it. Don’t know which one to try next. If as good as this one I’ll be hooked. Fine writing Frank, thank you for the enjoyment you given me… Tweety 🦜🦜
