Scale is the second book in The Blaze legacy, an NA/Adult Dark Portal Romantasy that is full of magic, mythical creatures, delicious tension, and spice that builds through the series. It contains some explicit content best suited for readers over the age of 18.
Author L.R. Friedman loves curling up with a cup of coffee while diving into her fantasy and paranormal romance worlds. She currently lives in Virginia with her husband and three children.
When she's not writing, you'll find her enjoying tacos, dark chocolate, and the occasional glass of whiskey.
The girl that grew up trying to find a magical realm hidden in her closet, L.R. Friedman hopes to transport readers to beautiful, sexy, dark and magical places through her stories.
4.5 stars! Super excited for this series! I’m a sucker for enemies to lovers, morally grey, and grumpy lovers… if that’s up your alley, then please pick this up! Perfect for fans of dark academia and fantasy all in one.
I absolutely love Ox’s humor, it had me laughing out loud. And finally finally we get the views of Dru in this one, which I was looking forward to! The author gave us character development and romance, which are my two downfalls, I’m obsessed with those two elements. Ugh can we take a moment to talk about King Redmond? Do I love him, do I hate him? I can’t make up my mind. I loved Neve’s character.. it was great to see the different POVs of the characters.
I don’t think I’ve ever read about dragon shifters, I’ll have to dig into my memory but with all that Kyleigh and Aislin had to learn regarding their new found power it was great to see their developments. This pace kept me going, for sure it was a bit more steady than descend.. the world building is one I really enjoyed. I cannot wait to see more by the author.
Huge thanks to LR. Friedman for gifting me a copy! All opinions are my own ☺️
Let's start with the fact that I loved Descend, but I think I love Scale even a bit more. It was so nice to have an inside look in the minds of more characters of the book, something i liked very much because you can bond more with all the characters. They all have their own things to go trough troughout the book and it was amazing going on that adventure with them. I have been laughing out loud soo many times about Ox and his humor. The action and romance scenes have been written so well and diving more into the world of Arafax was amazing. And OMG that ending!? I cried while reading the last chapter. This book series is definitely already one of my favorites for this year and i can't wait for the next book coming out later this year.
Thank you so much for sending me an ARC to read L. R. Friedman! This review is given voluntarily for reading the ARC.
This was a phenomenal follow up to an already amazing start!
The Blaze Legacy is a portal fantasy with a multitude of characters and it's impossible to pick a favorite. That is a testament to Friedman's ability to capture her characters so well and make the reader hand on to every word.
I cannot wait to see what else Friedman has in store for us!
Scale is such an amazing follow-up to Descend! The magic system in the Blaze Legacy series is just incredibly astounding and I find myself adoring it even more as the series continues! All of the main characters are just so loveable to me that I just adore all of their scenes together. (I'm speaking of Aislin, Kyleigh, Ox, Dru, Sloan, and Neve when I refer to the main characters here.) The couples presented in this book offer not only healthy relationships, but also feature LGBTQ+ representation as well. The plot was extremely well executed and the ending had me SCREAMING because I had to see what happened to my favorite character as soon as possible! Fortunately, my ARC for Ascend was just around the corner waiting for me to find out! L.R. Friedman just does not miss! Easily another 5-star read for me!
Scale proved to be a difficult book for me, some with what it was giving, and far more with what it was lacking, with both of those paying off some of my concerns and critiques of Descend.
On the giving front, my fears about Redmond's redemption arc are bearing fruit, without making much real progress at the same time. His is a very present-minded POV, and I have no sense of his characterization before he led a massive, kingdom-sweeping genocide. Mere days prior to the events in this story, he casually guts two people in his own dining hall, but now, with the introduction of Neve (a pairing rife with dramatic potential that mostly went unrealized), he's entered a Sad Boi era, with the forgiveness of others the first thing on his mind. Dramatic shifts in character aside (especially with most of it happening off-page), most of the cast treating his actions with kid gloves just isn't working for me. Sure, he's the gang's best chance to take down the Enchantress, but as of now his crimes are better fleshed out than hers are, and I can't buy his attempts at redemption as they stand. Helping burn a few bodies is a drop of water compared to the ocean of mass murder.
While Redmond's angsty pining is the best example of it, most characters have internal dialogue that delivers full angst, telling more than showing and without much to distinguish their thoughts beyond the worries they spend their chapters ruminating over. Kyleigh is scared of her powers, sad that her mother won't talk to her, and wants to fuck. Dru is sad about his missing sisters and loves Kyleigh. Aislin is scared of her bond mark, and doesn't trust Sloan while simultaneously wanting to see who can out-dom the other. Neve has complicated feelings about Redmond. Redmond is sad people don't believe he can change, even though he hates the Enchantress now that he doesn't want to use her for his own gains. Travis likes his dick, and also is one. Beyond this, the main voices don't often stand out. Samey POV voices don't make for the most engaging character work, and there were a handful of times I had to actively remind myself whose POV I was reading (not helped by how much of the book was set in the same locations doing the same things). To this end, the epilogue was a massively pleasant susprise, a distinct style and tone that make the slightly twisted viewpoint standout (though alas, I'm not quite sure what the final moment with the crumb detail repeated was meant to imply). Mox-Vision 3-D was also a fun development, and a tasty bit of lore about the piece of magic that most intrigues me, and I hope with Sloan joining the ranks of POV characters that we get more fun quirks with it.
As for what I felt I was missing, the world still feels small. We have two warring kingdoms that are little more than castles seperated by an evil forest where Sexy Baba Yaga lives, one other country far distant that has little crossover with the rest of the world, and a pair of mermaids. Sensory details are still few, with few locations standing out in my mind. And so few new locations! As our only new haunts, the crumbling ruins of The Forum and the eerily silent floating castle, peppered with corpses, absolutely make the most impression. Our returning cookiecutter castles, a magic tree, and the same one inn not delivering much in the way of new sights. Or new characters! A small world can still flourish with the right people to give it life, but this sparsely populated world doesn't feel vibrant or alive, a dozen people standing in a castle corridor with a field of lavender outside, the clearest detail a seemingly eternally purple-grey sky.
For a series with an ensemble cast, I was hoping for more fun in the dynamics between our characters. Unfortunately they barely communicate beyond cheeky one-liners and Hallmark-style flirtation, the latter layers making it easy to pinpoint future couples (hello Ox and Neve) rather than through natural interaction. Followup questions remain rare, characters (especially Kyleigh who by all rights should be the most curious about this new world) rarely asking anyone for any details, to maintain the slow drip of world and character building. Passive, internal characters run rampant, made all the more frustrating that characters finally communicating is what drives so many of the twists. This slow drip leads to no new locations, frequently repeated info, and a frustrating non-climax that will inevitably be undone by the 3/4s mark of Ascend. After the ending of Descend, I was hoping for more shifter/familiar info, Sloan's board games, Dru's tinkering, a promising dark fairy tale world expanded upon, new compelling layers between Kyleigh and Isla, Aislin and Kyleigh, and Redmond and Neve, but this sequel delivered almost none of what had piqued my interest. May Ascend (as the biggest and apparently most eventful of the novels thus far), and Pitch (which I've been told is in many ways the best of the bunch) pay off my persistence

--There's rarely much pop in the prose, so I was glad to see some gorgeously written transformation scenes. The effort that went into making those stand out shows
--Scale is an interesting title. My music theory officially dead, the next most likely source of the title would be the scales of our Revered. However, per the readalong, it's Dru's fairy blood tool that he uses to track people geographically. This tool is shown only once (unless I managed to miss one use late in the novel), and ends up having next to no significance to the plot
--Wing fetish is on *full* display
--In today's Reptile Report, it still doesn't feel quite right listing shapeshifter dragons as reptiles in the way that I track them, but it feels worse not to! May the dragon action continue to become more pronounced now that we have several trained shifters on the scene
--While again writing all of my thoughts out feels blisteringly critical, I need to repeat that I'm still enjoying this series for what it is, hence an okay rating! I just want to enjoy it a lot more than I do.
Holding itself back for me, 5/10
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Aislin and Kyleigh are coming to terms with their new found magic, Dru and Ox are navigating their roles, unexpected alliances are formed and betrayals are had.
I loved seeing Kyleigh grow especially being in a new land with so many secrets/truths being thrust upon her and Aislin trying to step out of the box she was put into but she still struggles asking for help since she has been alone so long.
Sloan is back in the picture and that has Aislin with so many conflicting emotions because she shouldn’t want her enemy 👀
Events unfold that push Kyleigh to her breaking point and Aislin makes a tough decision that will affect everyone.
LOVED this book! Scale, Book 2 in the Blaze Legacy, is really where the story takes off in my opinion. You grow attached to the characters, get to watch their powers develop and their bonds deepen.
I was dying for more Aislin and Sloane and this book delivered in the best way! We not only get to see more of them but also more of Kyleigh as she struggles with her past and coming into her power. We get to watch her grow from more of a young adult into a badass in this book. She faces herself, goes after what she wants and really becomes a character that you're rooting for.
You get a ton more backstory here as well so the story really depends beautifully. The ending had me squealing, laughing, screaming, and then wanting to throw the book at that cliff hanger but in the best way possible!! It was SOOOOO good!!
I loved having more POVs. I just love getting into everyone’s head. They are all so different and unique and have different motivations (and the secrets).
Travis really knows how to make an entrance (both times). His chapters might have been my favorite.
Kyleigh and Dru- Thank you! I am so excited to continue their story. And all the hiccups- I just wanted to throw my book (but I didn’t).
I was cheering sooo hard for Aislin and Sloan. I loved seeing them grow during this book and everything they can do together.
I want to know more about the Enchantress. And the wisps and Isla’s past (because there has to be more secrets). I still have so many questions and I know that they will all be answered in the next book.
I was lucky enough to receive Scale as an ARC copy and I loved it.. I fell in love with Descend when I first read it, and I feel like Scale just upped the game! L.R.Friedman gives us different pov's, which I love, because it just broadens the characters and our understand of them and their motivations so much more. The characters grow so much during this book and we are all here for it! And can I just say, I LOVE the Revered and the whole concept of them!Who wouldn't? She is amazing at keeping us all guessing and trying to figure out all the clues and secrets! And there are many of them! It seems an Enchantress herself, Friedman keeps us all guessing and toying with us, as we ride a rollercoaster of emotions to come to a major cliff hanger...and now..to wait for book 3!
I am not okay. That ending, I cannot my heart hurts now I have to wait for ascend. this book was just a perfect sequel. Scale picks up right where Descend ended, with the return of the Revered.
An assassin being afraid of being used again. A young girl afraid of becoming a monster. This book takes you on a journey as Aislin and Kyleigh try to figure out their newfound powers in hopes of defeating the Enchantress. Sloane, if you weren't already in love with her in Descend, you will be by the end of Scale. This gorgeous knight 🥵. That's all I'm saying you'll have to read to find out. I can't wait for Ascend.
I thoroughly enjoyed my continued adventures in Celaria as I read the second book in the Blaze Legacy series. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the characters we were introduced to in a deeper level in this second installment. The multiple POVs are amazing, giving us perspectives we would normally miss, while still leaving room for plot twists and internal conflict, where I genuinely didn’t know which path some of the characters would take. I’m also not one to try to predict, so I’m not a great reference when it comes to predictability, though there were some plot lines I saw coming, and there were some situations I hoped a character would behave in a certain way, leading to shock that I was correct, rather than surprised at the character’s choices. From my perspective, that speaks to stellar character development, rather than predictable.
When I got to the last 100 pages, I legitimately could not put the book down. So much had to be resolved, and I definitely contemplated throwing my book across the room, as the author predicted (I didn’t though).
This book left so many questions about the Enchantress, and I debated heading to the novella, Pitch, which I believe discusses the Enchantress’s backstory, but I decided to move to the 3rd book in the series instead — the ending of Scale made me want to continue in this world. I’ll definitely be getting to Pitch soon though, because I need to know more!
Scale is the second book in the Blaze Legacy series. This is not a standalone series, you must read Descend before you read this one. This book follows the events where Descend ended. Kyleigh and Aislin continue their journey trying to find out more about themselves, and their new roles.
I loved this book so much! What I loved the most about the book were the different POVs. Lauren is able to tells us this story from different perspectives straying away from the monologues some 3rd person books struggle with when trying to include all perspectives and tying them into the plot. I loved how the two main FEMALE characters are strong and they dont necessarily need someone to come to their rescue. I like how Dru is not your typical alpha male in need of coming to the heroines rescue. I love both Aislin and Sloan and how badass and strong they are together. And of course the turn the story is taking. I cannot wait to continue this series and finding out what happens next. I am finding out, that the more I read Lauren’s work, the more I fall in love with it. She has the perfect combination of fantasy and romance, which is exactly what I love in books.
After reading Descend with a group of fellow readers as we count down for the third book in this series, I knew that there was no way I’d be able to slowly read this book. In fact, I devoured it in several hours.
The story picks up right where Descend leaves off. Watching Dru, Aislin, Kyleigh, Ox, Redmond, Sloan, and the Queen work through the next set of problems was invigorating and addicting. This book had me on the edge of my seat literally the entire time. All the action, character growth, plot twists, and new revelations had me in their clutches. And the ending?! PHEW! Be prepared for a HUGE freaking cliffhanger.
My actual rating of this book is a 4.5 but GR doesn’t have 1/2 stars. I’m beyond ready for the 3rd to come out now.
Oh,my ! If you felt there was some stuff missing from the first excellent debut author book Descend, well this had been solved and addressed in book 2. The fluidity maturity and beauty of scale is really impressive , the character are far deeper ( oooooh Sloan😍) the queerness in the romance is beautiful and well let’s say that it spices up at some point and you d better have a cold glass of water at the ready ( or a bucket). The dragon thing is really well exploited. Atlthough there was one moment where I was….”that s a bit big on the plot” I really enjoyed reading it. it was a page turner and it’s promising more great stuff coming from L.R Friedman. I can’t wait to read the next one!!!!!
I still love this world and these character but it took me 2 months to get through this sequel. I'm giving 3 stars because I feel like this book was a set-up for a much larger story in the books to come, which is totally fine! Just means that I didn't get an overall jump out of my skin reaction while reading this. There were some interesting moments and the spice turned up a notch which was really fun to read. I can't wait to see relationships bloom and there's one in particular I am rooting for! lol I'm really intrigued by the villain, The Enchantress. I find myself wanting to know more about her, her magic, why she is the way she is.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 (The last 5% is 5/5 WTF IS HAPPENINGGGG)
I really like the variety of POVs. I also really like how there’s more than one romance storyline. The portal magic also feels unique and I genuinely don’t know what will happen next.
She LoVeS Dru. Ok babe chill. Maybe actually get to know him first. Maybe find out if he knows how to use his penis.
I enjoyed this book but I didnt love it. I just couldn't quite get sucked into the world like I wanted to and I'm not sure why. I ended up putting this book down for a while and coming back to it. The end did have some good cliffhangers that I will keep reading the series to find out more, but for me it just didn't quite pull me in fully to say i loved it.
I absolutely love the way the author puts in everybody point of view. I especially love the story of Aislynn and Sloane, and Kaylee, and Dru. The back stories are amazing, I am chomping at the bit to read the third book in the series. I can hardly wait to read her other books as well. Thank you for writing these awesome books!!
Omg this second book had me on such an emotional up and down… and sorry not sorry but Sloan & Aislin are my fav couple… don’t get me wrong I love Ky & Dru but I’m here for S&A lol… and with that being said… utterly devastating the cliffhanger… on to the next book!!!
OMG! The plot continues to thicken and secrets are coming out!! Hold on for an amazing second installment of the series!!!
I was hooked from the very first page and struggled to put it down.
The cast of characters is super easy to follow and are created so perfectly!! I feel that I know them personally and am invested to making sure they get what is deserved.
WOW!! I had to take a minute to process what I just read in order to even start writing this review.
This book left me yearning for more! I really enjoyed that we got additional POVs in Scale to really connect even more with the characters, and I loved all the twists.
There was a great balance between humor, suspense and steam to keep me coming back for more.
I’ve always felt that any good book leaves you wanting more - and Scale is no exception! I cannot wait to read Ascend and see how it all wraps up.
OMG!!!!! This series has gotten better and better with every page I turn! Of course I still love all the characters but Dru and Kyleigh are relationship goals! Love them both. Also who doesn’t love dragons!
Everything about this series is just so so good. Too many people are sleeping on it. We have love, battles, mermaids, warring worlds and dragons 😱. I love the characters, the plot just everything. But that ending was heartbreaking 💔
“Love is more like a steady breeze that forces you to collide, lifting you both up.”
4⭐️ Still reading this series as a read along with the author and I’m still loving this world that we’re in. There are a lot of Easter eggs from the first one that show up throughout here and I cannot wait to see how they all connect. I am loving all of the different POVs in this one. And that cliffhanger at the end 😮💨
L.R. Friedman back with another amazing addition to the series! This added to the world building from the first book. It has everything, magic, a little bit of spice and more dragon shifters!
This is such an excellent second installment to a great series. Super excited to dive into book 3. Great characters and the plot is fast paced, I couldn’t put it down!
In Scale, we continue our journey with the main characters from the first book. An unlikely and uneasy alliance is formed between two rival kingdoms as they work together to defeat the Enchantress.
Kyleigh must navigate her broken relationship and unstable powers. We get some amazing blossoming relationships and bonds that continue to form.
Filled with banter, tension, and thrilling magic, Scale is a solid sequel to this portal fantasy romance series!
