By Friday, one will kill and one will die in the Evermore Publishing offices. But this is just the start of a horrifying chain of murders because the killer has much bigger plans.

From the USA Today bestseller comes a shocking thriller that will keep you guessing up until the very last page.

When a new girl, Becky Rusett, joins the Evermore Publishing team, she’ll start to realize no office setting is as safe as it appears. The secrets, lies, and underhanded dealings of the publishing house are unsettling enough–but now some sinister events are putting the entire office in real danger.

Decades before Evermore Publishing existed, a group of five meanspirited children terrorized a young child in a small town. The Fab 5, as they were called, set off the chain of events that would lead to the horrific events at Evermore. But what’s their connection to the New York City bookworms…and can anyone solve the mystery before there’s a brutal murder?

You never really know if there’s a killer in the cubicle beside you. This tense mystery is only the first of five books tracing the footsteps of a killer.

What if John Wick had a cat…….

Book Information

Five Will Die is written by L.A. Detwiler. Thank you to the author and Xpresso Book Tours for providing me with an advance reader copy for review. The book is due to be published on April 18th, 2023, and is the 1st in an expected 5 book series. Detwiler is a USA TODAY bestselling author and high school English teacher from Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.

Summary

Evermore Publishing is not a top-tier publishing house. The new girl, Becky, knew that when she took the job but she had no idea about the secrets, lies, and underhanded dealings that were part of the fabric of the firm. She also had no way of knowing that within a week, one of the team members will kill, and another will die.

The team at Evermore Publishing was blissfully unaware that a chain of events, decades old and long forgotten by most, was about to result in horrific consequences.

No one is safe.

My Thoughts

I did something I try not to do—read other reviews before I read the book. Between a negative opinion and an initial dislike of Detwiler’s brash style in the initial chapter, I was not optimistic. I am very glad that I kept reading. The style grew on me quickly and, honestly, was fitting for the story being told. The story was fun and kept me guessing.

The book has a handful of prime characters, and each chapter is written:

1) from one of their perspectives,
2) as a flashback to the past of an unidentified character, or,
3) from the perspective of the unnamed killer him/herself.

This is not a new literary device, but one that I thought Detwiler used well. There are enough characters, all with serious flaws, such that it isn’t clear who the killer is but not so many that the reader has trouble keeping them and their background straight. There also is no shortage of drama or mini cliffhangers throughout the book. When I say that the office and/or the teammates are flawed or dysfunctional—that’s an understatement.

Recommendation

This is a fun book. One that will likely keep you guessing for a while as the book unfolds. If you enjoy mystery novels with the potential to become longer series, this book certainly warrants a read.

This is a quick and fast paced read. It centers on the employees of a small publishing company, all who are doing things they shouldn’t be doing, in various degrees of badness. We know there is a killer and we get chapters told from that person’s childhood, which we can use to guess which of the current employees might be that person.

None of these characters is likable but I didn’t mind that. More villains means more guesses as to who the killer could be. Though the author didn’t get really deep into each character’s background, I got enough to figure out what made them all tick. When the villain was unveiled, I can’t say I was totally surprised but also didn’t guess in advance because it was laid out in a way that it could’ve been multiple people. The twist at the end was fun and even though I don’t love reading series, I’ll probably see where the author goes with the next book in this one.

Overall, this was a fast paced thriller with lots of action and was a fun read overall. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Five Will Die by L.A. Detwiler is a thriller series following a killer who is targeting his childhood bullies.

First, let me thank the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.  (Sorry for the delay in reading/reviewing Lindsay....it slipped through the cracks of my TBR pile).

Series Information:
A killer, who had a rough childhood, and was bullied as a child, grows up and decides on revenge against the five teenagers who had made their life miserable so many years ago.

My Synopsis:    (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Evermore Publishing is the child of CEO Chuck Morris, who is not your typical publisher.  His red hair, his tattooed sleeve of Japanese letters and colorful Koi fish, and the enormous western belt buckle do not scream CEO.   But it is really Chuck's side-business that is bringing in the money...and many problems.

Most of his employees are only using  Evermore as a stepping stone for better things (or are running from something), and although they don't really care where the money is coming from, they are starting to wonder if their lives are worth this job.

His employees include: his Accountant Chelsea (who wears pink, and is the bubbly one), his HR Manager Gretchen (who is in love with him), his Editor Scarlet (who feels she can get any man she wants), his Marketing Manager Lucius (who has been really helping the business since his hire), and his childhood friend (and Scarlet's assistant)  Alexander.

When Becky joins the team on Monday morning, she quickly realizes that this place may not be as safe and friendly as it appears.  There are some strange things happening in this office.

By Friday, the killer will strike.

My Opinions:
The book is about secrets and lies,  anger and resentment,  competitiveness and bullying.  Mainly it is about revenge.

The story is alternately told in different time frames (current and past), and by different people, one of them the killer.  The unknown narrator worked well, but at one point I wasn't sure if the "Killer" chapters and the "Past" chapters were even written by the same person.  I didn't particularly like that implementation.

However, the story moves along at a fast pace, and although my initial suspicion as to the identity of the killer was correct, there were more than enough suspects (maybe too many) to keep me wondering.   Everyone was hiding something.

Apparently there will be five books in this series, each tracing the footsteps of the killer as he targets his next victim.  I am definitely looking forward to the next book (which I already have).

I’m not a huge series reader, so for me the shorter the better – three is probably my sweet spot before I get bored.

Becky is new to Evermore Publishing, and immediately she realizes that things are not what they seem. There are secrets, lies, and underhanded dealings and then sinister things start happening putting all the employees in danger. As events from the past come bubbling to the surface, Becky is unsure if any of them will survive.

Wholly characters batman! This one had so many characters I’m not sure I ever did get them all straight. I had the killer figured out early on this one, it was just easy to guess – which I did not appreciate. I love when thrillers keep me guessing until the end and this one did not deliver. I was also annoyed with the name of this one, Five Will Die – I figured there would be five murders – but no, it’s just a set up for the series, each with its own murder. This book was also overly description and not descriptive enough at the same time, that’s a hard thing to manage, but this one pulled that off. This one just had way to many things going on and I wish I would have enjoyed it more.

If you’re a fan of thrillers you know who committed the murder, and you enjoy many characters than this one is for you – out February 7th! Thank you to Xpresso Book Tours, the author, and @netgalley for a copy of this e-ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Five Will Die is a new mystery novel from best selling author L.A. Detwiler. It's the first book in a new five book series coming out February 7/2023.

Synopsis: When a new girl, Becky Rusett, joins the Evermore Publishing team, she'll start to realize no office setting is as safe as it appears. The secrets, lies, and underhanded dealings of the publishing house are unsettling enough-but now some sinister events are putting the entire office in real danger.

The Fab 5, as they were called, set off the chain of events that would lead to the horrific events at Evermore. But what's their connection to the New York City bookworms...and can anyone solve the mystery before there's a brutal murder?

This story is a little different than others I've read as I knew up front who the killer was. The story is full of many characters, each one having their own secrets and or lies.

I've read many of L.A. Detwiler's books and have enjoyed them all, this particular one isn't my favorite only because of the back and forth writing style I found hard to follow at times. I do look forward to the next books in the series though to find out what happens next!

Thank you L.A.Detwiler for asking me to review an E-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I received a copy of this book for free in return for an honest review.

Interesting story, poor execution. That’s the best way to describe this book.

Five Will Die follows main character Becky as she begins her new job at Evermore Publishing. Evermore Publishing has some skeletons rattling around in its closet, and everyone who works there is in grave danger. After all by Friday, one will kill and one will die. And in case you forget, the author reminds you every few pages.

Unfortunately I was not able to finish this book. There were spelling errors, which I could have gotten past, but the tone used by the author made it seem as if she thinks the readers are stupid.

I did read the first few chapters, and when I couldn’t take it anymore I skipped to the end.

Yes the killer is exactly who you thought it was.

I don’t recommend this book, there are far better psychological thrillers than this one. Go pick up one of those and leave this one alone.

Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy of this book.
This is the first in a series of five books. There were a lot of characters in this book. It made it hard to follow at times. I did enjoy the plot and it took me a while to figure out who the killer was. The ending i felt was left unfinished which makes me want to read the next book in the series.

Really good characters, and a well written book. It really does keep you guessing until the end then, when you finally learn who the killer is, the author throws in another unexpected twist, that promises to make the next book even more exciting.
Compellingly readable.

Worst. First. Day. Ever.

Becky’s first day at Evermore Publishing in New York City is not what she expected. She is looking to start her life over, leaving something bad behind her. She expected to be a bit intimidated by her more sophisticated co-workers (she is), and to need a little help as she reads submissions for possible publication (that’s not going to happen….and worse still, she is expected to review romance novels, which she hates)…but the delivery of a severed hand? She definitely didn’t see that coming. Add in highly charged office politics, an iffy boss, and sexual liaisons galore, and Becky has quite a bit of navigating to do. What she doesn’t know? There is a killer lurking around the office who intends to kill five people who wronged them years earlier, and will kill one by the end of the week. Who is the killer? Who is the first intended victim, and who amongst the co-workers is part of the remaining targeted victims?

As the reader gets to meet Becky and the six other characters who are her new office mates, it soon becomes clear that the killer could be anyone…including Becky. Given the past histories of each, they all have sins to hide and grievances to settle. Even as the killer describes who is first victim will be, it is far from clear just who it is. I was kept guessing right up until the end, and had some of my assumptions turned on their head in the final pages. Fast paced, with characters whom you don’t quite like but can’t quite hate, and the mystery of just which of these people is the killer to keep you reading till the end.. I found it an excellent read, and recommend it to lovers of a good whodunnit (in this case, a whowilldoit). Thanks to NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for the advanced reader’s copy!

Thank you Netgalley and L.A. Detwiler for allowing me the opportunity to read the advanced readers copy of “Five will die”. The book is to be published April 18th 2023 and is the first in the expected soon to be five book series. Detwiler is a best selling author also know for “The diary of a serial killer’s daughter,” and a high school English teacher in Pennsylvania.
Evermore publishing isn’t a well known publisher company ran by a very shady man named chuck morris. The story revolves around the new girl Becky running from her past and soon landed at Evermore. She didn’t have a clue about the secrets and lies that made up Evermore publishing. She also didn’t know by the end of her first week at work one of her colleagues will kill and one will die.
This was the first book I’ve read from the author but I will definitely be looking into reading more from this author, and I’m looking forward to more in this series so I can find out how it all plays out. Overall this was a fantastic read . It was so well written and all the characters were described perfectly it felt like I actually knew them personally. It definitely had be guessing till the very end I had no idea who the killer was till the last few pages and I love that in a book.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery and a book full of twists that has them guessing all the way through.
I received an advanced readers copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Becky joins the staff of a publishing company , running away from a broken love affair. There are strange happenings at the business. In the first hour of her first day, a severed hand is delivered to HR....... and Chuck Morris, the owner, forbids anyone to speak about it. It isn't the first gruesome delivery made.
Every one of the staff have a dark secret to hide, and have to hide the fact that the company is a front for the real business Chuck is in.

This is the story of the effects of childhood bullying.

Sooner or later, revenge will be taken. A bully may not remember the victim, but the victim never forgets the bully.

I thought that this book held promise, and I relished the fact that there would be four books to follow.
The plot looked good, I just felt that the putting together of the plot lacked proper construction, and I correctly predicted who the killer was quite early on.
The chapters where the killer describes his childhood were good. But the chapters pertaining to the present day seemed to be written by someone else, they lacked 'intensity'.

I doubt I will bother reading the future books, this book was a disappointment.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

DNF
This book had way too much going on. I made it to almost 50% but I could not keep reading. The writing has no depth. The plot is confusing. I honestly have no idea what's going on. There are so many POVs: Chuck, Scarlet, Becky, Lucius, Alex, Gretchen, The Past & The Killer, that it is so hard to keep track of everything that's going on. It feels unnecessary to have a POV for all of the Five that the title mentions--not everyone seems important to the plot.
The only significant thing that happened in this book before I DNF'd was a severed hand was sent to Chuck's publication office. And I was almost at 50%. Something else besides everyone freaking out about it should have happened to further develop this story. I felt like the author was spending too much time trying to tell all the characters' backstories... And this book is only 200-ish pages. That's not a lot of time to get to the point if you're spending too much time on backstories that don't even matter.
I will not be picking this book back up once it's published. I have no desire to know what else happens due to it simply being too confusing to keep up with.

This is the first book I have read by L.A. Detwiler so it always takes a little time to get the swing of a new author. That being said this author has way to many characters to the point readers will be lost on who is who. The author uses chapters to introduce characters and their point of views as well as the killers point of view. For this reader this made it difficult to remember the characters purpose and secret. It also became a distraction as well as several spelling errors I came across.

While the moves along well enough and the plot is interesting but the switching back and forth between so many characters ends up causing more of a headache and less enjoyment while reading L.A. Detwiller Five will Dive.

Thank you to Netgalley for advance copy of the book.

Five Will Die by L.A. Detwiler is a pulse-pounding thriller that combines workplace tension with a chilling serial killer mystery. Set in the seemingly mundane environment of Evermore Publishing, the story escalates into a web of secrets, lies, and deadly plans that stretch back decades. Detwiler expertly layers suspense, connecting the dark deeds of a group of childhood tormentors to present-day office murders, keeping readers guessing until the very last page. With its tight pacing, intricate plotting, and richly drawn characters, this first installment in the Chameleon Killer Chronicles is a gripping read for fans of psychological thrillers, murder mysteries, and suspenseful crime novels.

Ok....LA Detwiler just keeps getting better and better. Her imagination is black as the inside of a locked safe, but if you can take it, the payoffs increase with each step of her storytelling journey. I'll admit I had to step back about 75% through Five Will Die to read a light cheerful rom-com (with dogs!) to clear my palate. Then back to finish the main course in one big gulp.

There are no really sympathetic or "nice" characters here which made figuring out who the killer was nearly impossible. (Ok, I didn't). I'm not usually a fan of serial novels, but this one wrapped up well, and I can't wait to get my hands on the next volume.

Kudos, Ms Detwiler! Keep up the bloody business!

3 1/2 stars
Written in a style I do not normally care for. Different points of view from the cast of characters, with a header on the chapter that they are featured in. Most of them are really not very sympathetic or appealing, and all have their secrets. Some worse than others. I also do not usually care for "jumping into the past" to fill in story, but in this case it fits as it is an important part of the plot. I was not excited by the book, but I did read and finish it. Nearing the end I was not sure how the author was going to fulfill the promise of the title other than mass murder, but I realized very quickly that it would be the first in a five book series. I did not hate it and will most likely read the next to find out what is going to happen.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest and unbiased opinion of the tale.

One of the best books I have read this year! I wish I could give it more than 5 stars! This was a twisted, fast-paced, interesting read, that I found I did not want to put down! It had well-developed, multi-faceted characters. It was suspenseful, thrilling and addictive! Can't wat for the next in series!

Not sure what I thought about this book. I was leery as I started it as to whether I would finish reading it. As I got into it, I really enjoyed it and was drawn into the story. I was curious as to who the villain was and I did guess about midway through. In the end, the bookw as well written and enjoyable, but it left me hanging. Guess I'll have to wait for next in the series.

Five Will Die is a story about revenge to be executed by a troubled mind. His upbringing was so full of hurt and despair that he was led to make abominable acts and those will delineate his future and his mind. A good plot, told by different points of view, all of them with different levels of badness. No one is safe in this publishing company.
I thank the author for the copy of this book.

The fab five used to torture and rule the school and the “killer” had wanted to so badly to be a part of them. That is, until the fab five does something so heinous, the “killer” is out for revenge. The current setting is at Evermore Publishing, a total mess of a business and employees. Is one of the employees the “killers” target? And if so, will the other four be in danger now too?

Everyone has some darkness within them and secrets. Sometimes the people we should be concerned about the most, are those we work with. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. It's also a good warning to treat people with respect, even as children, it will come back to haunt you.

I really enjoyed this one.

I found it interesting to have insight into the killer's past, without knowing exactly who the killer was. It kinda made me feel like I was inside the killer's mind, or like I was seeing things through their eyes.

The one thing a love about a Lindsay Detwiler books is she grabs you right from the start, not just with the storyline but with each character she writes.

Becky starts her new job at Evermoore Publication house, it's not the biggest high end firm but that's exactly what she wants. Becky has a past that she really needs to be kept secret and this seems like the perfect opportunity to do so.

Her new boss Chuck Morris looks the part with tattoo sleeve and his big buckle belt and Stenson cowboy hat. But he is not everything that he seems.

Everyone working for Evermore press has a job to do and never the twain should meet but when Lucas befriends Becky is it fate that has brought them together or something more sinister?

What lies and deceit is hidden amongst the staff and owner?
Who wants to kill everyone and for what purpose?

A wonderful twisted psychological thriller with a horror element thrown in.
