Gavril has had to hide most of his magical gifts for all his life. Even in a world where magic is common, some gifts are best hidden, especially for an orphan. He has also been part of the rebellion against the Emperor Zathrian since his student days. The lies propagated by the empire and the truth the rebels want to perpetuate make his choice easy.
When he gets the appointment of a lifetime as a chronicler of the Empire’s history, he sees it as an opportunity to help his cause. Everything looks as if it's going according to plan until chance brings about a meeting with the Emperor himself.
Zathrian is the immortal tyrant whose regime is covering up every truth Gavril wants to bring to light. When an ancient, arcane magic deems the two soulmates, intertwining their destinies together, Gavril is sent reeling. He may refuse the bonds of predestination, but he is drawn to the emperor all the same.
This was such a fantastic read! I absolutely love soulmate tropes and this was no exception. The world-building was amazing, the prose was exceptional, and the characters were so dynamic and interesting. I loved the m/m romance, it was so well done! Gavril and Zathrian were unique and intriguing characters in their own right and I loved the progression of their relationship!
The ideas and baseline plot in here are quite good, just not well developed. My interest was piqued enough to finish the book, and I found that it was particularly fun if I imagined it as a B-grade TV show with iffy acting, Xena-esq but with only 1 season to world build.
There was no richness in it, though. No depth. The soulmate idea requires a lot of effort to work because otherwise it ends up as an excuse to not develop the characters and their relationship, which happened here. Emotions were very black and white, the sequence of events bland. The writing wasn’t special in any way and was actually often confusing - the passing of time told to us, not felt on its own.
I think this book needs an editor to run through it again and really push on language and story/character development.
