Hope Island #4

Auld Lang Mine

Rate this book
You never forget your first love. Especially when your first love is a wounded warrior. Will the new year give them both a second chance at love?

Veterinarian Andrea Morgan has been forced to move home after losing everything including her fiancé to the dark waters of the Pacific. The pages on her ruined happily ever after have been flipped to the end and she’s living out her epilogue alone.

Sgt. Max Lyons is too young to be a “retired serviceman”. And he’s not a big fan of the title “amputee” either. There are three things he’s loved in his life; his family, the Army, and Andi Morgan. He lost Andi when he enlisted. He lost the Army when he lost his leg.

In the course of one fateful trip to the grocery store, both Andi and Max are strong-armed into attending the same support group meeting and find themselves back in each other’s space with the magic and madness of Hope Island as a backdrop; haze of decorative trash can fires, dominatrix joggers, runaway weight benches, and a demonic cat named Mr. Giggles,

Will the sparks flying between them turn into the boom of fireworks signaling a new year and a new beginning?

Auld Lang Mine is a small town second chance holiday romantic comedy with new adults aged MCs that will have you laughing out loud, tearing up, and always wanting more from this hilarious island community. Join the wacky residents of Hope Island today and dive into this fourth book in the Hope Island Holiday Romances!

Author's Note:

This extended length, third person novel contains profanity and is not a clean romance. It is a plot-focused, emotional slowburn HEA with realistic characters and no instalove. The MMC is a green flag / cinnamon roll hero. While part of the Hope Island Holiday Romance series, it can be read as a stand alone, and has no cliffhanger.

Content Notes: As Max, our MMC, is a disabled combat veteran, Auld Lang Mine includes depictions and discussion of war, combat injuries, PTSD, depression, and anxiety. As Andi, our FMC, is a veterinarian, Auld Lang Mine includes discussion and depiction of animal injury, treatment, pregnancy, and birth. It also includes discussion of death of a family member, grief, pregnancy, and neurodivergence.

Slow Burn/Second Chance FTW!!

New to me author Teagan Hart drew me in with Auld Lang Mine, and made me fall in love with Andi and Max within the first paragraph.

Andi is a small-town veterinarian trying to recover from losing her fiance in the last year, all while busting her butt to make sure every last animal in the makeshift shelter she's running is adopted before New Years or the Head Vet is going to ship them off their small island to other shelters on the mainland.

Andi is amazing, I was surprised at the strength she shows to keep getting out of bed every morning bringing 110% to her job, keeping up an ongoing, horribly depressing text string with her fiances sister, and doing anything and everything her parents ask of her. But it's obvious she's dragging, trying so hard to please everyone, and doing absolutely nothing to take care of herself.

Max is back home after an IED explosion while he was overseas resulted in the partial amputation of his leg. He's so sweet, working hard to repair his mother's house, but otherwise he's pretty much staying housebound. He doesn't want the pitying looks of the people he's known all his life.

When his mother orders him out to the grocery store one night he comes face to face with the person he's been trying his damndest to avoid - Andi. He may have joined the Army, but she's the one who broke up with him, and broke his heart.

Reading Auld Lang Mine as Andi and Max dance around one another, remembering their high school days - so much of it was so very funny, I adored their pranks and intelligence! But each time they get a little closer Andi's survivors guilt, or Max's anger that she wasn't willing to wait on him pulls them back apart.

I was amazed by how much gossip spins around this little island that no one had taken the time to let Max know what had happened to Andi. Sometimes the miscommunication is funny, but other times I was ready to rip their hair out!

The side characters of this little island have a similar feel to Lucy Score's Blue Moon, everyone has a place and a place for each and every one! I adore how the community came together to save the shelter animals, and how each shelter animal matches their person - even Mr. Giggles!!

Five stars for Teagan Hart's Auld Lang Mine, I'm going to start going through her back list now!! I'm so glad she has more books, and more books coming soon!

Sweet

I just tried to finish this yesterday, but I couldn't. So first book of 2023.

Second chance romance, with a lot of angst. They were high school sweethearts and he went to join the army and she didn't want to keep going.

I liked Max, he had a new normal that he had to work on. Andi... she was too flip floppy. I know, tragic loss. But girl, why do you have to be tossing the boy around?

First book by this author, and I wouldn't be adverse to checking out more.

Auld Lang Mine has touched my heart like no other book. I’m just in awe of Teagan Hart and her ability to write books that touch us and inspire us to be better humans. I’ve said from reading her first book that she’s a once in a lifetime author that you can’t miss out on and I still stand by that 💯. I feel like I’m reading books by authors who have been writing for decades and have a lot more experience than Teagan. This is only her 4th romance book. She is that good. Auld is about two people who were in love but went their own ways after graduation from high school. Now they’re both back and they both have a lot to work out. But they instantly become fast friends again. Andi’s fiancé passed away and Max lost a leg in the military. But Andi doesn’t see Max as damaged because of it. That alone made me adore Andi. She is my favorite character out of all of Teagan’s books. She and Max are awesome characters. They are so relatable. They just live on this crazy island that Teagan brought to life. This island is full of hilarious people and hilarious things that they do, like ice turkey bowl, but Miss Mandie has to be the best. These books are stand-alones but do yourself a favor and read them all. Start with Deck The Headline, read about the zanny town and prepare to fall in love with not only Hope Island but Teagan Hart!

I loved this and in some parts I wanted to hate it because it was TOO real and looking into many broken but beautiful people hurt my heart a little. And speaking as someone in therapy, someone should have told Michelle to start going to therapy waaaaaaay sooner than someone finally spoke up, BUT. We humans are flawed but hopefully good creatures at heart. And my God did I enjoy seeing Max and Andi find their happiness their own way - although the possible big crushing thing that could have happened near the end ALMOST made me think that Teagan might have NOT written this as a HEA for a minute - phew thank God it was a HEA and they did find that happiness. Every time Teagan writes another story I'm like "aw yeah this is the best one can't top this" AND THEN SHE DOES, FOLKS. Ugh. 10/10, 5 stars, gonna go recommend it to everyone in my life now brb

So far this is my favorite of this author’s books. Even though it possess all the qualities and quirkiness of Hope Island. This book goes much deeper in storyline, steam and delving into uncomfortable subjects.

Andi and Max’s individual situations I’m sure are relatable to many people.
It’s also a story of presumption, failing to communicate, heartbreak, physical complications, fate and destiny.
Sometimes we decide what others are thinking and make decisions on our own presumptions.

I don’t do spoilers. It’s not fair to the author or the reader. However, I was happy to see one individual finally go beyond their own issues.
Bring your tissues and your smiles. You’re going to use both!

This story is such a tear jerker as it deals with loss in several ways but is still a beautiful story. Andrea is a veterinarian who has lost her fiance and moves back home to Hope Island, trying to find some kind of peace. She meets her first love Max when both go to a support group and then the town keeps throwing them together which was fun. Max lost Andi when he enlisted in the army and is now dealing with being an amputee and being medically discharged from the military. I cried so much reading this book but it was so worth it.

This book is a heavier read than the two previous ones in this series, but it is well worth the read. This one will tug at your heartstrings and you might need to shed a tear or two. Hope Island is back at it again when Andi, the town’s veterinarian, and Max, a returning veteran, meet up again at a support group. As they both struggle to overcome their personal losses, can they find a way back to each other? This is a truly magical place with its memorable citizens and I can’t wait for the next one!

This author is new to me and I typically don't start a series many books in, but this couple drew me in. This island is full of quirky, unique individuals and I suspect each story has it's own special flair. You couldn't help but fall in love with Andi and Max. How a lack of communication and first love can lead to missed opportunity. But fate had other plans for this couple and what an adventure it was. Looking forward to going back and learning more about the people of Hope Island and Ms. Hart's world of the unique.

Well, this was my first Teagan Hart book, but it will certainly not be the last! I hardly remember the last book that kept me up for so many days until the wee hours and made me so happy despite my lack of sleep!
This book was a revelation, the right combination of humour, seriousness, romance and small town I didn't know I needed at the moment. It healed me from the back to work blues, it accompanied me for less than a week but it felt just like a well loved comforter or a good cup of tea. I loved everything, and will be back in Hope way sooner than later.

Another masterpiece!
Yes, it’s heavier than the other books as it’s dealing with loss in all forms.
A few tears were falling (which is rare for me) but the craziness that is Hope Island made more than up for it.
All in all it was perfect.
I laughed, I cried and I wanted to shake Michelle a time or two…as well as hug her tight.
Loved the growth and the healing process of the characters and of course the Happy Ending!!!

Teagan Hart keeps growing as a writer and surprises me more with each book she gives us! Auld Lang Mine is based on two characters both struggling with tough challenges (see TW), however Ms. Hart writes with both compassion and humor as these high-school sweethearts meet up after 8 years apart. While their challenges are tough to navigate, TH brings the LOL humor of Pippa Grant into the story and the steam we love into this HEA. It's a great read to start off your year!!

Andi and Max truly were made for one another, but sometimes life happens, and with tive they found their way to one another.
I can't say enough that I really love Hope Island. Those characters warm our hearts.
Only in this town all the villagers can help our main characters heal.
Also, can I just say that Miss Mandie should have her own book?? ;)

Best book!

This book was awesome. It was so many stories in one. It was great. I hope to read this author again. It was my first book with her. Characters were so good and story was amazing. I have a family member who lost his leg in combat and the struggles are real and the book was awesome in telling the story. Just a great read I enjoyed it so much.💓

Auld Lang Mine is entertaining

Teagsn Hart's 'Auld Lang Mine' kept my interest to the end. It's a little bit bawdy at times; I mean, with the bakery named Defloured, you know some of that type of wordplay will happen. It's not bad. I would definitely read another of her well-written books.

As someone who was married to a wounded warrior for a few years, I loved seeing one portrayed (so well, might I add) in such a fun and beautiful story. Well done, Teagan!! Can’t wait for Cupid!

Another Hope Island triumph. Andi & Max are perfection... the shenanigans and wit are delicious. A mystery to solve and some lessons in Grief/Recovery/Hope. Loved it.

Such a good read! Military feels, slow burn, HEA, but with a perfect portrayal of that person you just want to shake some sense into! I could have used a little more happily ever after, but I ALWAYS could, it’s just who I am. Read it, you won’t be sorry!
