What does an almost middle-aged guy like me have in common with a young woman who was never allowed to grow up? Not much… Other than death. Greer accepts responsibility for taking life for granted. But the weight of others’ expectations leaves her existing in the past. She stands on one side of a deep chasm, tied down by regrets that highlight a bleak future. When Greer needs a lift, I recognize our histories are strikingly similar, and I’m struggling as much with being left behind by the people I held dear. But can two lonely hearts bridge the gap together and find a promise for tomorrow?

About the author

Jody Kaye

Before becoming an international bestselling author, Jody Kaye used to cook dinner for her family …Or so her three sons say, since she still maintains they began eating the meal ingredients for snacks around the same time.

It makes her wonder if the phrase “just 5 more minutes” only counted for video games and not toward penning the last paragraph of a romance novel?

A voracious reader, Jody has written over 25 small-town books, including the steamy southern Kingsbrier and angsty Shattered Hearts of Carolina series. Among her emotionally relatable cast of characters are coming of age twenty-year-olds and later-in-life single parents. She even threw in a psychic medium for a dash of suspense!

Jody currently resides in North Carolina with her husband, who continually proves an insta-love romance can last a lifetime—and who’s glad he talked her into being a writer and out of the bougie French stove she wanted.

Her children have either moved out or are currently waiting in line for their take-out order. She’s hungry and hopes they ordered extra fries.

Jody Kaye always gives me all the feels! This was an emotional story that tugged at all my heart strings. I felt for Greer so much and wished the best for her. Byron was her perfect match. Another great book to the Shattered Hearts series.

🐝🐝ONE PHENOMENAL TREAT🐝🐝
Buzzing bees boo! Jody hit the motherload, unleashing one incredibly, tumultuous, earth-quaking, rock-our-world wild ride. Blazing through on the wings of acceptance and sizzling passion, filling all those heart-wretching frills, thrills and tumultuous feels. Pulling those heartstrings, keeping you riveted on a razors edge. Sparks ignite and light a fire so hot the flames reach the heavens with such splendor, your lost to it's warmth. The attraction and chemistry ignites with such intoxicating intensity, exploding with boundless emotions and infinite affection, kicking this jewel into a tailspin with a mind-blowing culmination, uniting them together beautifully. The characters are complex, genuine and original with traits and qualities that balance and blend, with amazing depth and diversity, adding enough spice for an extra punch. Throw in 100% on point realism, painting colorful scenarios so vividly descriptive with graphic detail it makes the storyline explode. Phenomenal job Jody, thanks for sharing this awesome bad boy with us.

This book in just 18 chapters managed to do the thing I’ve been wanting to read in romance books: emotional bonding over lust/physical bonding.

And it was done SO GOOD I ate up every chapter and words. Not just the main character’s growth which was stunning to read but also the side character’s acceptance and development has me on chokehold!

I cannot emphasize how patient and understanding Byron is. And how Greer is closed-off but how she realizes that yes, she deserved her own healing and happiness apart from Ellie, Ellie’s memories, Ellie’s parents.

It was just so exceptional and believable that Byron and Greer really loved one another.

Greer is kind of stuck in time. She served her prison sentence, but has never moved on. A big part of that is keeping Karen and Mac happy. Byron is hooked on Greer from the first time he drives her home. I love how he tries to be there and steps up for her without overstepping. He constantly holds himself in check, even when helping with her creations. Mac is amazing too. He just needed to intervene with Karen sooner for all their sakes, but he does when it REALLY needs to happen. Bryon is just plain awesome and he brings his family with him.

A short, emotionally heavy ride. There's some great character development for such a short novella. My only qualm is the writing style. I wasn't a big fan and it was a little hard to follow, but the flow did get better in the last third of the book. It makes it hard to decide on a star rating. I want to give it a 2 for the writing, but the characters and bones of the story itself deserve 3-4 stars.

Emotional and beautiful

Deep Gap is the sixth book in the Shattered Hearts of Carolina series and is the story of Greer and Byron. This story is emotional and at times can be heartbreaking for both characters as they are dealing with their pasts. But for Greer she is stuck in the feelings and does not know how to move past them. With Byron she has a chance as he tries to help her. I loved both of these characters and will say I used a few tissues while reading their story.

I don't rate DNFs to be fair to the author.
This isn't a bad book, but I got bored about 60% of the way through. I found myself reaching for other books.

After a tragedy when a life is taken the person left can suffer from survivors guilt. Greer is really struggling in life. It’s been a couple years since she was released from prison for killing her best friend in a horrible accident. She berates herself and believes she doesn’t have it in her to love another person. She and Bryon work together in a facility owned by her deceased best friends parents. These two gradually start building a friendship that they both desperately needed. They are both broken souls that were lost, just going day to day, not really living.
What these two have is something special. It’s healing them and they grow to love each other.
Only thing I wish this story had was more of an ending.

Greer has been through a lot, and is dealing with some pretty big issues. She is just existing. Now she is working for the parents of her deceased best friend. That is where she meet Byron and he is in the same just existing state also. They start a friendship and start to heal each other. This is just an amazing story. It hooked me and kept me right there until the end.

I really enjoyed this quick read. Both characters had their lovable parts and major insecurities that were believable. I was rooting for them from the beginning. They healed each other in ways no one else possibly could. Their love story left me feeling warm and fuzzy. That's the way it should be. Great job.

I don't even know where to begin! I was so excited to read Byon and Greer's story. I was not prepared to have Greer's character turn me into an emotional basket case! Something about her just had my insides twisted up... in a good way. She is a perfect example of the resiliency of the human spirit!
I truly loved every minute of this book and I only wish that it hadn't ended!

I've read several books written by Jody Kaye; she is becoming one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read more of her books.

This is the sixth book in the Shattered Hearts of Carolina Series; the story continues from the previous book and is best if read in order.

I enjoyed this new "Shattered Hearts of Carolina" story. This story is about Byron and Greer. These two broken souls who both have tragic pasts. They are both living day to day and empty lives. They meet at work and a friendship begins to develop. I love the characters and the story is very captivating. Very good read with some depth to it.

Greer and Byron meet through work. Their relationship starts as friendship, but turns into so much more. The moral of the story is your past doesn't define you.

Loved this book and can’t wait for the next one to come out! Great workplace romance and overcoming tragedy of losing a loved one. I also loved that she pulled in a bi woman to show how to love yourself (and show the man a thing or two). Great addition to the series!
